An important addition to the Naxos catalogue of music by Toshio Hosokawa, one of Japan’s most distinguished contemporary composers. The recording begins with mezzo-soprano Charlotte Hellekant’s narration of Poe’s poem. Other works by Hosokawa can be heard on 8572479, 8573329, 8573276 and 8573457.

Image In the Tatra Moutains
Three richly melodic works that show Novák, a fellow student of Josef Suk in Dvorák’s composition master-class at the Prague Conservatory, at the height of his powers. In the Tatra Mountains was inspired by the composer's journeys in this magnificent region while the evocative Eternal Longing is based on a poem by Hans Christian Andersen. This is a superb complement to Falletta’s Buffalo recording of Josef Suk’s Fairy Tale [8572323].

Image Violin Concerto; Grand Duo; Double Music
This recording documents Harrison’s pioneering roles as a composer for percussion (in this instance non-pitched) and an integrator of Western and Indonesian idioms (the Grand Duo is a remarkable example of gamelan-infused chamber music). Double Music was co-composed with John Cage.

Image The Confessions of St. Augustine
A story of spiritual awakening, St. Augustine's Confessions is a fascinating look at the life of an eminent Christian thinker. Widely seen as one of the first Western autobiographies ever written, it chronicles the life and religious struggles of Augustine of Hippo, from his days as a self-confessed sinner to his acceptance of Christianity as an older adult. Along the way, he unveils his theological questioning of human existence and the essence and nature of God, while providing influential philosophical arguments on creation and time. Augustine's sincere and inquisitive attitude will inspire any listener, regardless of faith. Translated by R.S. Pine-Coffin

Image The Mimic Men
Former government minister Ralph Singh is the perpetual outsider: displaced, disillusioned and now living in exile, Ralph reflects on his earlier life and the searing effects of colonialism. Ralph's constant estrangement sees him ever attempting to fit into various communities, only to find home in more transient spaces. Born on the tropical island of Isabella, he is one of West India's many 'Mimic Men'. Booker and Nobel Prize-winning author V.S. Naipaul's sixth novel is a brutal and perceptive commentary on the postcolonial condition of the colonial man.
