”Each of my symphonies is like a full individual continent,” says the Danish composer Per Nørgård (b. 1932). His music origins in an inextinguishable desire to explore the marvels of the world and the powers of music, and his eight symphonies stand as musical milestones, composed through six decades. This recording by the Oslo Philharmonic and conductor John Storgårds presents Per Nørgård’s Symphony No. 2, in which the composer euphorically – and almost psychedelically – unfolds his famous infinity principle, and the Symphony No. 6, in which the mature composer appears more curious and playful than ever.

This DVD celebrates Herbert Blomstedt’s profound insight into the symphonic worlds of Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner, unfolding in Denmark’s historic Roskilde Cathedral. Blomstedt’s dream of conducting in this dazzling acoustic came true at a memorable concert in 2007, now made available for fans of the Swedish conductor and his Danish orchestra to enjoy worldwide.

(Dagens Nyheter)

Vagn Holmboe (1909-1996) is acknowledged today as one of the great composers of the 20th century. His international format emerges clearly in his outstanding series of string quartets and chamber concertos. But in other chamber music too, and in solo and vocal works, a great personality comes into its own with a highly distinctive Nordic sound. Vagn Holmboe would have been 100 years old in 2009. Dacapo celebrates with this collection, which offers rare insight into the composer's musical world.

'What will the Young Danish Quartet change their name to when it no longer suits their ages? If they continue to play with such levels of vigour and originality, with a sense that the music is new and exciting to them, a name-change may not be considered necessary at all. There is wisdom and subtlety here aplenty but the over-riding impression is of a quartet young and stylistically free.'

• Carl Nielsen thrust Danish music into the 20th century, and his chamber music has a prominent position in the international repertoire. In spite of this Carl Nielsen only composed a limited number of chamber works for strings. His official oeuvre includes four string quartets with an opus number; however three of them were already composed before 1900.

• While today it is hard to draw any great distinctions among these four Nielsen quartets in terms of popularity, it was a different matter in his own time, when the earliest, the G minor quartet, was by far the least frequently performed, while the next one, in F minor, and the last, in F major, vied for a definitive first place, probably because they both belonged to the regular repertoire of well established ensembles

• This recording features two of his string quartets (in G minor and F major) and the only string quintet (in G major) he ever composed. All three works played a central role in Carl Nielsen's musical career, since they were major successes for the debuting composer and contributed to his initial breakthrough.

'For Denmark’s national composer, Carl Nielsen’s international reputation is still not all that it might be. True, his operas Maskarade and, to a lesser extent, Saul and David, are revived from time to time, and the symphonies are performed. But none have really broken through as staple fare. It’s hard to understand why, especially on this evidence. Thomas Dausgaard and his Danish National Symphony Orchestra, who play like demons, fill this music with energy and passion. So much affinity is evident for the composer here that it is infectious. The overture to Maskerade opens like an invitation to the dance, while works like the soulful prelude to Act III of Willemoes are filled with a quiet, searching quality. Similarly, Cupid and the Poet is marked with the instruction allegretto con brio and there’s plenty of brio in the Danes’ interpretation. For which read an evident happiness at music they feel absolutely at home with, and that is clearly close to their hearts. Our critic David Fanning was left ecstatic by this disc, suggesting it may very possibly end up as his recording of the year. It’s that sort of recording, an absolute triumph.'

"Här finns en rad av Carl Nielsens kortare orkesterstycken samlade inklusive en del för- och mellanspel från operor och skådespel.
Huvudnumren utgörs dock av ”Helios”, ”En fantasirejse til Færøerne”, ”Pan og Syrinx” och sviten ”Snefrid”. Thomas Dausgaard går som vanligt till direkt och kraftfull attack. Orkestern svarar genom att spela med all den energi och lust och humor som Nielsen kräver, och Dacapo står för ett dejeligt ljud."

Niels W. Gade is one of the most prominent representatives of High Romanticism in Danish music. As a young man Gade had a meteoric career in Leipzig, where he succeeded Mendelssohn in 1847 as conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. But in 1848 he settled down in Copenhagen, where he remained active as a composer, conductor, organist and teacher until his death. Although Gade is primarily known for his orchestral and choral works, he also composed a number of excellent chamber music works, including the three quartets on this CD.

In Landscapes, Abrahamsen rediscovers expressiveness by peeling away superfluous complexity, while the lyricism of Walden rests on minutely controlled minimalism. The staging of the Danish composer Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen’s opera The Picture of Dorian Gray (2013) is one of Den Jyske Opera’s (Danish National Opera) bravest ventures in recent years: A choreographed opera with no singers on stage – based on Oscar Wilde’s most controversial novel. Like Wilde’s novel, Agerfeldt Olesen’s opera balances between reality and dream or imagination. Consequently, both sounds from the world of yesterday and outbreaks of the musical genre are present in Agerfeldt Olesen’s score, though primarily expressing the composer’s own distinctive sound. The prizewinning Swedish choreographer Marie Brolin-Tani has conceived the choreography seen on the opera stage as a strong sensual interpretation of the actions and conflicts of the drama.

The Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen's audio-visual work Black Box Music is a surprising, energetic, noisy and yet profoundly entertaining deconstruction of traditional musical drama. The starting point is the classical setting of a conductor in front of an orchestra - but quickly the scenery explodes in musical and choreographic energy ad absurdum, bending the conductor's role through puppet theatre, hand choreography and eventually a musical performance involving tuning forks, finger snaps, rubber bands and the construction of a musical machine within the black box. The DVD also includes Steen-Andersen's signature work Run Time Error, filmed at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, as well as a short documentary and thus offers a fascinating meeting with one of Nordic Music's most visionary voices today.

Peter Bruun (b. 1968) is one of the most distinctive and exciting voices in his generation of Danish composers. He is not afraid to express himself with simple, recognizable material, but he does so in very subtle ways. His sense of timbre and sonority is highly sensual as appears in these three works witnessing the composer's strong fascination with the ocean.

Ole Buck was a pupil of Per Nørgård and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen. The catalogue of his works, which includes frequently-performed, beautiful orchestral and chamber music works, is typified by clarity, refinement and the meticulousness of a watchmaker.

"Det er magisk opslugende musik. Som i flere af cd’ens andre, korte eller længere stykker for større eller mindre besætning, f.eks. ’A tree’ og ’Flower ornament Music’. Der indfinder sig en nærmest zenbudhistisk ro i sjælen, vi er langt fra monoton kedsomhed, kun opslugt af de små skred i gentagelser og instrumentale variationer... Skamløst, men kunstnerisk overbevisende."

The music of Ole Buck (b. 1945) is simple and beauty-seeking, sophisticated and surprising on its own terms. In some works he will make do with as few as five notes, but the composer’s incomparable sense of timing ensures that the listener never feels the need for more. This album presents premiere recordings of four of Buck’s works, of which three are inspired by nature: Fiori di ghiaccio (‘Ice Flowers’), A Tree and Flower Ornament Music – all recorded by Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen and conductor Jesper Nordin.

• The Danish-born organ master Dietrich Buxtehude’s music greatly influenced the younger J.S. Bach with its clarity of line, its nobility and its often daring harmonic invention, all combined in the stylus phantasticus.

C.E.F. WEYSE (1774-1842) began his career as a strong fan and follower of W.A. Mozart, but soon developed an irresistibly personal and truly national attitude to his art. This exclusive Perspectives collection of Weyse's finest vocal and instrumental works fully portrays the composer's genius as well as his status as the first composer of the Danish Golden Age period.

With this attractively packaged double CD (offered at 1 CD's price) in Dacapo's Perspectives series you will encounter Weyse's vocal genius in the shape of the popular Christmas Cantata and a selection of melodious solo songs with orchestral or piano accompaniment; a couple of early Romantic symphonies which were the very first to be written in Denmark as well as beautifully balanced pieces for solo piano.

All of the works on this Perspectives issue are presented in critically acclaimed and award-winning recordings from Dacapo Records' catalogue.

There are still unknown, exciting sides to Denmark's world-famous composer, Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). On this CD you can hear the premiere recordings of two of his cantatas for choir, soloists and orchestra. The cantatas were written in 1908-09, when Carl Nielsen was in one of his most productive phases. They have been performed several times since, but it is only in connection with the new collected edition of Nielsen's works that they have appeared in print. The same is true of his genial Homage to Holberg, written in 1923 to celebrate the great 18th-century dramatist to whom Carl Nielsen also paid homage with his opera Maskarade.

Simon Christensen's string quartet "MANIFEST- But There's No Need To Shout" is an outstanding work in one single movement, exclusively using the open strings of the instruments. The combination of the rich world of harmonics in the open strings and the harshly and richly dissonant chords result in a unique, dark and lustrous sound. The absence of melody and dramatic effect provides rich scope for absorption in this original universe.

Paul Hillier and ArsNova Copenhagen continue their exploration of Danish vocal music. The main work here, Line Tjørnhøj’sVoxReportage, was composed in close cooperation with the artists, and weaves various sources together –including 1981 Nobel laureate Elias Canetti, Chelsea Manning, and Rabi’ahal Adawiyya(8th-century Iraq) –to create a ‘reportage’ on the nature of humanity over the past thousand years. In Carl Nielsen’s Three Motets, Renaissance polyphony and the composer’s more personal style are molded into something fresh and powerful; the Swedish Romantic composer Stenhammarsets Danish texts, while Holmboesets British border ballads. Everything about this album crosses borders of one kind or another!

Folk music is the music of everywhere and everyone. Like rivers, the melodies and dances have flowed slowly from region to region: Whenever an old fiddler stumbled on a melody, he would play it and make it his own before passing it on. You don't own a folk tune, you simply borrow it for a while. On this recording we have borrowed and arranged a selection of our favourite Nordic folk tunes and let the music flow through the wooden instruments of the string quartet. Does it work? We hope so. And we hope you will enjoy this recording!

This collection of works for saxophone and percussion by five Danish composers challenges standard ideas of melody, sonority and harmony. Some of the works are typified by great desperation and pent-up emotions, others by melancholy and reflection. The music snorts, groans, snarls and shouts - or fizzles, whispers and chafes - and is a remarkable display of the almost infinite expressive possibilities of this unusual combination of instruments

• The composer and conductor Emil Reesen was a unique jack-of-all-trades in Danish music. He composed everything from film melodies to operettas and ballets for the Royal Theatre, and it was all typified by his masterly craftsmanship and great melodic talent. On this CD you can hear examples of his infectious, brilliant orchestral music, including the rhapsody Himmerland, the imposing Festival March and the fiery dances from the ballet Gaucho.

• The rhapsody Himmerland is typical of Reesen’s compositional style. Here he pours out his orchestrating skills over a handful of simple folk tunes from North Jutland. There had long been a tradition of setting folk music in orchestral rhapsodies, and folk dance tunes arranged for orchestra regularly formed part of the broadcasts in the early years of Danish radio. Yet no folk music medley is as artistic as Reesen’s Himmerland Rhapsody, which stayed the longest in the Danish repertoire after his death. Another orchestral piece that Emil Reesen is well known for is his Festival March. It was written for the film “25 Years as King of Denmark” on the occasion of King Christian X’s Jubilee and is one of the most famous Danish marches of all time.

• On this new release you can experience a thrilling recording with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and conductor Bo Holten performing some of Emil Reesen’s most unforgettable orchestral pieces, contributing to the fight to keep the memory of one of Danish music’s most exciting and virile composers alive.

"The first sound is set in motion, is caught up by the next, which is caught up by the next, etc., in a powerful crescendo." In 1961, Else Marie Pade (1924–2016) wrote the tape composition Etude, which was met with greater excitement among reviewers than electronic music in general at the time. The length of the piece is 333 seconds, and as a tribute to Else Marie Pade 11 artists have remixed Etude on this CD – all 11 remixes with the same length as the original. The results are greatly diverse, but all show the inspiration from Danish electronic music's greatest pioneer, who insisted that all sounds are equally valid.

Elverskud (The Elf-King’s Daughter) is a dramatic cantata from 1854, based on Danish medieval ballads. It became one of Niels W. Gade’s greatest successes, not only in his native Denmark, but throughout Europe, where Elverskud was performed several hundred times, often conducted by Gade himself. Gade was especially admired in Germany, and on this album Elverskud is not only played on period instruments for the first time, but is also sung for the first time with the German text that brought the work international fame. Perhaps this Danish national work isn’t so Danish after all?

Jacob Gade (1879-1963) - Danish composer and violinist - is world famous as the composer of Jalousie, Tango Tsigane. But besides this celebrated concert piece, Gade left us a large number of melodious orchestral works in the popular music genres of his day, and composed several symphonic suites.

His instrument may have been the violin, but Niels W. Gade (1817–90) was a great admirer of piano virtuosos Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. In fact, the great Danish Romantic composer left behind a collection of piano works that inspired both professionals and amateurs. Breathing new life into a selection of these, Armenian-Danish pianist Marianna Shirinyan performs Gade’s poetic Aquarelles, the almost orchestral Sonata in E minor, four chopinesque Fantasy Pieces and the little Chanson danoise, here in its first recording.

Niels W. Gade (1817-1890) was beyond comparison the best known and most widely recognized Danish composer of the nineteenth century. He was an excellent violinist, and wrote a good deal for the violin. His fondness for the instrument is most evident in the works for violin and piano, among which the three sonatas trace Gade's stylistic development over 40 years: from youthful imagination in the early first sonata, through a firmer hand with the Classical-Romantic ideal of the period in the second, to the experienced, more rigorous Classical lines of the third and last, with none of the heavy scent of the Late Romanticism of the day.

Jacob Gade, who wrote the world-famous Tango Jalousie, was one of Copenhagen's leading conductors. In his waltzes we hear the sound of the 1920s and sense the mood of the days when every proper restaurant had its own orchestra. Gade was also a pioneer of cinema music, and his Kino-Musik gives a complete impression of how motion pictures were accompanied in the Golden Age of the silent film.

String quartet meets electronica - in a fruitful clash of traditions and new possibilities. The concept of ‘sound' is the common denominator for a whole new view of the venerable configuration of four string instruments in a quartet. Five young Danish composers lead the genre into the future, and the five are linked by electronic remixes of their works, so that the CD forms a composition of compositions". The result is effortless, virtuoso, colourful music with a wealth of nuances!"

Louis Glass (1864-1936) was one of the most important composers of the Late Romantic period in Denmark. He was a contemporary of Carl Nielsen, but there is a certain opposition between their musical styles due to the influence on Glass of César Franck and Antopn Bruckner. Louis Glass was an outstanding pianist and teacher, and his effortless command of the instrument is demonstrated in the works on this disc.

The Danish Golden Age in the first half of the 19th century is known as a period with an abundance of artistic expression, famous talents such as Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard and early Romantic composers like C.E.F. Weyse and Niels W. Gade. But according to the British choral director Paul Hillier, we can in fact speak of a continued ' Golden Age' for Danish choral music today - which is why this collection of Hillier's Danish Golden Age jewels with Ars Nova Copenhagen includes Classical and Romantic works as well as music from the subsequent generations right up until our own time.

The four works on this CD by Lars Graugaard (b. 1957) were composed especially for the ensembles of New York University Steinhardt in a joint search for a new rich and varied musical discourse. Endeavouring into the complex relationship between composition, perception and emotion, Graugaard uses the computer as a sophisticated performance vehicle and a compositional tool in scored and interactive music, creating a unique and radical sound experience.

Lars Graugaard (b. 1957) is active in a variety of musical areas. He has a strong academic background with a degree in flute performance from the Royal Danish Academy of Music and a PhD from Oxford Brookes University in interactive music. He has always been very active in music creation with more than 200 score compositions and numerous vinyl, CD and digital releases. Graugaard's production comprises digital experiments into the latest trends of interactive music and cross-modal forms, as well as popular projects and compositions in the modernistic European tradition from opera and large-scale orchestral works to chamber music, vocal and solo works. Upon becoming Visiting Faculty Artist at New York University Steinhardt in 2010, Lars Graugaard set about using the rich and varied competences and sophisticated facilities found there to develop dedicated works that similarly traverse novel grounds. He often enters into sustained collaborations with orchestras and ensembles, in the manner that he became composer-in residence in 2013 at El Grup, Valencia, Spain; a similar position which he also held at Odense Symphony Orchestra, Denmark, 1996-1999. As performer Lars Graugaard has appeared all over the world, and when the flute was his principal instrument he recorded the music of his contemporaries as well as classical composers. In recent years he has turned to the computer as his performance tool, shaping it as a sophisticated performance vehicle in interactive and generative music. There is at times a strong eclecticism in this music that he often performs under the alias Lars from Mars, releasing this music on labels like Pueblo Nuevo, Chordpunch and clang. Lars Graugaard was professor of interactive music at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense (today Danish National Academy of Music) and lectured for five years at Aalborg University's Medialogy Department. He has participated in and directed several research projects, holds a handful of trusted positions in international organizations in the field of music and is on the board of the International Society for Contemporary Music.

The NYU Symphony Orchestra, directed by Professor Joseph Bongiorno, is the premier orchestral ensemble at NYU Steinhardt. The Symphony presents full seasons of concerts led by world- class conductors at NYU's Frederick Loewe Theatre and Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, venturing off-campus in series at the Peter Norton Symphony Space and the Church of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village. The NYU Symphony is recognized not only for its superb orchestral training, and for its annual world premieres, film score presentations and recording sessions. Students have the opportunity to participate in musical theater and opera productions and collaborations involving jazz, world music, rock and pop featured in past apperances with members of the Silk Road Ensemble, Combo Nuvo, the Eagles, and more. As a result of NYU's multifaceted curriculum, alumni of the NYU Symphony have built careers in performance and other areas of the music industry.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (b. 1932) has called himself a minor figure in Danish music - an outsider - but it will be evident that he is in reality one of the major names, an ‘established outsider’; indeed he is one of the few Danish composers to have received the Nordic Council’s Music Prize (in 1980 - for Symphony, Antiphony).

The organist Eva Feldbæk has taken on one of the Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s earlier works and challenged him to write new ones. The result is a record of organ works that span a period of over 25 years: from Mirror III from 1974 to Archaic Procession and Cabinet of Mirrors from this year. They mark a notable process of development in the work of a composer who has always set himself up in opposition to new dominant trends and gospels. In 1999 Eva Feldbæk persuaded him to revive his old interest in composing for the organ. This led to a whole series of compositions where Holmgreen expresses himself in new, surprising ways.

The concept of musical meetings – in Italian “incontri” – are a common denominator in the three orchestral pieces by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (b. 1932) on this CD, recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thomas Dausgaard. The fantastic hallucinogenic landscape of the title work with its inherent baroque contradictions, violation and contrast meets the pulsating irony of the two modern classics Symphony, Antiphony and Mirror II, all reflecting the composer’s lifelong fascination with the absurd.

The music of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen is at its most affecting when it is at its most absurd – like in the sinfonietta works on this recording by the composer’s longtime artistic accomplice Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen. The points of departure for the classically absurd PGH pieces on this album range from a red Skoda door, given to the composer by Athelas as a gift (Traffic), over randomly picked newspaper articles (Three Songs to Texts by Politiken) to general inspiration from Samuel Beckett (Repriser and Rerepriser) and Søren Kierkegaard (Og).

• J.P.E. Hartmann was a central figure in the Danish music of the nineteenth century. He composed in all genres and his music spans three cultural epochs. It was in Danish National Romanticism that J.P.E. Hartman was to achieve his most striking compositional results and the choral work Vølvens Spådom (Prophecy of the Seeress) is one of Hartmann’s undisputed masterpieces.

• The work is based on a medieval poem about Nordic mythology and is typified by that special "Nordic sound” that Hartman made distinctive through the use of elements from folk music and has, until our own day, been part of the great legacy of Danish music. Vølvens Spådom marked the culmination of Hartmann’s ”Nordic style", and in the last thirty years of his long life it was to become his most frequent performed work. In 2006 Vølvens Spådom was chosen as one of the 12 works that represent the Danish Cultural Canon.

• On this new release you can experience an exciting recording with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra / DR and chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard performing J.P.E. Hartmann’s unforgettable masterpiece. A previous Dacapo release of Hartmann’s works performed by the same artists was well received: “Fans of Scandinavian music will find him interesting and appealing…[this] disc is delightfully repeatable.” Classics Today on 8.224207.

J.P.E. Hartmann (1805-1900) composed music throughout eight decades and was greatly admired by Grieg, and a stylistic inspiration for Nordic national romanticism. Hartmann took centre stage in the wake of the old Danish masters Weyse and Kuhlau and became the prime exponent of Danish 'national' music. The finest examples of this can be found in among other works the remarkable piano sonatas, the masterly theatre overtures and the opera Little Kirsten, judged at the time to be the very essence of Danishness.

The Danish composer Gustav Helsted (1857-1924) was perceived by his contemporaries as modern and radical. As an advocate of the new, Late Romantic currents that he had encountered on his travels to Germany, France and Italy, he was described in his native Denmark as “...a questing artist who chooses his resources with extremely discerning taste, and who may therefore seem odd and unapproachable”. Today, however, Helsted’s music sounds both charming and accommodating with its strong Romantic expression, and despite the Continental inspiration it is clearly rooted in the Danish tradition and character. On this premiere recording The Danish Sinfonietta and David Riddell present Helsted’s symphonically conceived Decet feom 1891 and the dramatic string quintet in F minor, composed in c. 1917.

This recording marks the beginning of a new series devoted to previously unrecorded chamber works by the Danish composer Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). The music was written from the 1950s to the 1980s and ranges wide, all the way from the playful to the serious. Holmboe's inexhaustible wealth of ideas and his mixture of lightness and ingenuity run through all the works. For Bo Holten, the roles of composer and conductor are closely related. We meet him in both roles on this CD where the composer Holten is beautifully represented by his works for a cappella choir and also demonstrates his background as one of today's leading choral conductors. Bo Holten's choral songs to texts by William Blake show how excitingly a composer of today can write on the firm ground of tradition. Holten is thoroughly extrovert and never loses himself in complexity. His music has its very own sound and is something as rare as euphonious and balanced - yet still a little offbeat.

Himself a renowned conductor, Holten leads the Flemish Radio Choir on a passionate journey through the many facets of love, using the whole of musical history as a framework and sounding board for his own contemporary idiom.

Bo Holten's (b. 1948) new opera The Visit of the Royal Physician was a great success with both audience and reviewers at the premiere in 2009. It is a tragic love story from one of the most dramatic periods in the history of Denmark, when new ideas almost overturned the social order. It is the 1770s, and the young, idealistic doctor Struensee dreams of creating a new and better world. He is given the chance to put his ideas into practice when, almost by coincidence, he becomes royal physician to the insane King Christian VII. Soon he is also the lover of the young Queen Caroline Mathilde. The result is a disaster for all those involved - while the old order is allowed to endure. The Visit of the Royal Physician is based on the best-selling novel by Per Olov Enquist. The performance was recorded at the Opera in Copenhagen and is conducted by the composer.

The music contained on this recording ranges from the earliest known - regrettably unflattering - mention of Danes in music in the 9th century to Danish songs from the 15th century. It includes 13th century Parisian polyphony found in a remarkable Danish source and Danish versions of songs from the international repertory and thus illustrates both a Danish contribution to European music and the musical contacts that Denmark enjoyed with the rest of Europe in the Middle Ages.

The music of the two composer cousins C.F.E. Horneman and Asger Hamerik was never properly appreciated in their native Denmark during their lifetimes. Hamerik made his career abroad, while Horneman fell foul of everyone in the Copenhagen musical establishment. Now the Arild String Quartet sheds new light on the forgotten string quartets of the two composers with this debut CD for Dacapo Records.

The composer C.F.E. Horneman (1840-1906) was acclaimed by his famous fellow-countryman Carl Nielsen as "the bright flame and lambent fire of Danish music". The sensitive composer himself had to struggle with a fiery temperament, and as a result of a succession of unfortunate circumstances his overall oeuvre was very small. This CD presents a collection of Horneman's magnificent orchestral works, all of which have a background in mythological and historical dramas: the Ouverture Heroïque of his youth, and the three major mature works: Kalanus, Thamyris and the Gurre Suite.

The music on this CD confirms the special position of the composer Jørgen Jersild (1913-2004) in Danish music. It is captivating chamber music written over a half-century during which the composer underwent great musical development, but at the same time persisted in his own personal style - from the early works from the 1930s and 1940s to the later string quartet showing us a courageous, mature composer seeking out new musical areas.

In his most important work to date, the song cycle Moon-pain (2003-8) for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, Klaus Ib Jørgensen (b. 1967) has set the moonlit, dreaming poems of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) to music that is both beautiful and disturbing. The six movements of the work are interwoven here with two other, related compositions: Goblin Dance (2005) for clarinet and piano, and Lisbon Revisited (2008) - a soundscape from the streets of Lisbon, a poem by Pessoa in a variety of languages, and fragments of the Moon-pain music. This is the sound of the maternity ward of this poetry.

• Although the great German poet Rainer Maria von Rilke (1875-1926) was against musical settings of his poetry, he himself permitted Danish-born composer Paul von Klenau to set his grand poem Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Kornetts Christoph Rilke to music. Hearing the world première recording of this work, it is not hard to understand what made Rilke favour the young Paul von Klenau.

• Paul von Klenau was very happy with his own work and wrote to his publisher: “I am now working on the Cornet – it will be my best work. But very modern. Future music.” In spite of Klenau’s own comments, we would say today that his evocative song cycle has a strong Late Romantic taste to it, with its Mahlerian orchestration and the dramatic use of a baritone soloist, chorus and large-scale symphony orchestra.

• As the ideal choice for the demanding solo part in Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Kornetts Christoph Rilke, Dacapo Records is pleased to present world famous Danish baritone Bo Skovhus for the first time in our catalogue.

• “Klenau is a must for devotees of good quality late-Romantic orchestral stuff” ClassicsToday.com

This world première recording of Paul von Klenau's (1883-1946) recently rediscovered string quartets sheds new light on a highly interesting figure in early 20th century music. The Danish-born composer left his native country to study and work in Germany and Austria, where he belonged to Alban Berg's circle of friends.
Klenau's music accordingly maintains a fascinating tension between Late Romanticism and Early Modernism; operating, as has been said of Berg, in "the twilight of tonality".

Anders Koppel (b. 1947) is to a rare degree a composer of his time. With one foot firmly planted in the classical European musical tradition and the other in world music, rock and jazz, Anders Koppel's career as a composer can be seen as one long continuous mission to unite these cultures in a contemporary musical idiom. Born in 1908 Herman D. Koppel represented the oldest generation in contemporary Danish music. Because of his Jewish origins, he was a regugee during World War II, and the war years left deep marks on him. This finds expression in the oratorio Moses, which is considered one of the principal works of the post-war period. Since his debut in 1930 he was also admired as a virtuoso pianist.

Hard-working as a composer, pianist and teacher, and patriarch of a music dynasty that has become a Danish counterpart of the Bach family. His works are influenced by the Neo-Classicism of the inter-war years and models like Bartók and Stravinsky who combine a rigorous intellect with impulsive rhythms and jagged edges. Sometimes there is a touch of jazz, which was a great preoccupation of Koppel's in the 1930s. His compositions include seven symphonies, four piano concertos, one cello concerto, an opera based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, chamber music, piano music and songs.

• Rued Langgaard was an odd, lonely figure in Danish music. His Late Romantic and Symbolist background and his passionate views on art and the role of the artist brought him into conflict with the sober, anti-Romantic view of art that reigned supreme in Denmark in the inter-war years.

• Langgaard did not shrink from the visionary and experimental, the eccentric and extreme, and his music ventured into areas where the outlooks, musical styles and qualitative norms of the twentieth century broke down.

• His sixteen symphonies make up a thought-provoking, original contribution to the history of the symphony. The two symphonies on this CD radiate youthful freshness, courage and an infectious joy of music. The very young Langgaard was not afraid to refer directly to ideals like Beethoven, Wagner and Richard Strauss, but his irrational character does not deny itself either. Symphony No. 2 with soprano solo is represented here in the long original version for the first time. Symphony No. 3 is a regular classical-romantic piano concerto – with one choir feature.

• This new recording is issued in hybrid SACD format, with acclaimed conductor Thomas Dausgaard conducting.

4 AV 5 MÖJLIGA I BETYG I DAGENS NYHETER

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was an odd, lonely figure in Danish music. His 16 symphonies make up a thought-provoking, original contribution to the history of the symphony. The last two symphonies are both brief, but are musically very different. In no. 15 we find modernist features, while no. 16 can be called a personal testament in the spirit of Romanticism. The CD concludes with a couple of early orchestral pieces and three world premiere recordings of late works where Langgaard demonstratively expresses the absurd situation he found himself in, as an artist who had been sidelined and who felt that he stood alone in the struggle for the high ideals of art.

(Dagens Nyheter)

Rued Langgaard completed his first symphony at the age of just 17. No Danish composer had hitherto written such an ambitious, demanding, long symphony, and indeed it was described as unplayable. But in 1913 it was given its first performance with great success by the Berlin Philharmonic under Max Fiedler. Langgaard's models were Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Bruckner, but the work exhibits striking, original features and offers a rich journey from the foot of the mountain where the surf breaks against the rocks until one reaches the magnificent, wide view at the summit.

We continue Dacapo’s tradition of releasing high-quality recordings of the Danish composer Rued Langgaard, who never received the appreciation he deserved in his lifetime. Together, Gunvor Sihm (Nightingale String Quartet) and Berit Johansen Tange make what might be called a Langgaard super duo. Both musicians have released highly praised Langgaard recordings in the past–now they combine their expertise. Sihm & NSQ’s Langgaard albums were praised by Gramophone (Young Artist of the Year 2014, Editor’s Choice, nominated for Gramophone Award), BBC Music Magazine (Editor’s Choice, nominated for BBC Music Magazine Award), San Francisco Chronicle (“Simplybreathtaking”), The Observer (“Surprisinglyrewarding”), Classics Today (“Marvelous”), The Strad and more.

Rued Langgaard, composer

About:
The sound of Rued Langgaard's music is unique and undefinable. His late violin sonatas were written in the mid-twentieth century, and look both forward and back. With their intimacy and sense of longing, the sonatas have a nostalgic character, yet Rued Langgaard was more than just a very late Late Romantic who cultivated musical peculiarities and moods from a bygone age; he was a profoundly original composer whose musical ideas and visionary music remain something unique today.

Rued Langgaard's late violin sonatas come from a period in the composer's life when his role as a loner in Danish musical life had truly become clear. In 1940, at the age of 47, Langgaard went into a kind of exile when he was engaged as organist of the Cathedral in Ribe. In the city he met a violinist who inspired him to experiment with the violin sonata after a 25-year break from the genre. The work was intense and innovative. Langgaard composed four sonatas over a period of a year, and every morning between 3 and 7 a.m. he sat totally immersed in the writing of his music.
Dacapo's new CD with Langgaard's late violin sonatas outstandingly demonstrates Rued Langgaard's radical originality. On the face of it the music can sound like Romantic pastiche, but one should not be fooled: Langgaard constantly bends and stretches the old forms and creates new interrelationships. One of the four sonatas, the Short Violin Sonata, has concentration of the musical material at its centre. Other sonatas show Langgaard's strongly religious, imagery-creating side, with titles like Parce nobis, Jesu! and Écrasez l`infame, which almost literally follows Voltaire's call ‘Crush this infamy!'.

Dacapo Records is proud to present two of the world's leading interpreters of Langgaard in intense interaction on the second and last CD in the series of Rued Langgaard's violin sonatas.

The life of the Danish composer Leif Kayser (1919-2001) was devoted equally to the religious and the musical. However, after establishing himself early as one of the young hopes of Danish musical life, he broke off his musical career to become a Catholic priest. This release features Leif Kaiser’s Second and Third Symphony. Both works are typified by the composer’s remarkable technical mastery and rich sonorous idiom that unites a great Danish tradition with the most exciting elements of the past currents in European music.

This CD presents the world premiere recordings of three works by Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) written for and premiered by the New York Philharmonic under Music Director Alan Gilbert. The opening work, EXPO, was the overture in Gilbert's very first concert as the Philharmonic's new Music Director and Lindberg's first season as their composer-in-residence in 2009. The symphonic piece Al largo and the virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2 - premiered by the Israeli-American pianist Yefim Bronfman - bear further witness to three remarkable years of artistic collaboration between the legendary orchestra, its celebrated music director and one of today's strongest Nordic composers.

Bent Lorentzen (b. 1935) makes no secret of his musical heart. He explores the world of sound in compositions of great vitality and sensuous freshness. His aim is musical interaction between people, e.g. a composer, a performer and a listener. His piano music, composed between 1971 and 2000, is a rich source of experience, an exploration of the vast soundscape of the instrument and its musical potential.
