Image CATALOGUE-CD: Symphonies Nos. 38 & 41
Freiburger Barockorchester / René Jacobs

Conducting the musicians of the Freiburger Barockorchester, René Jacobs offers us a chance to rediscover two symphonies of 'classic' status, originally released in 2007.

"... René Jacobs's credentials as a Mozart interpreter are impeccable, and his recordings of the Prague and Jupiter Symphonies issued last year were widely admired...anyone who wants highly energised, period-instrument accounts of these two great works won't go far wrong with these." Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 25 March 2010

Piers Burton-Page, International Record Review, May 2010

"If you want all preconceptions as to how this music should sound given a thorough spring clean, then René Jacobs is your man."
Julian Haylock, Classic FM Magazine, June 2010

"a recording that is thought-provoking and always compelling."

The English Concert / Andrew Manze

Andrew Manze, leading The English Concert in their second recording together, demonstrates the electrifying, spontaneous style of playing which has made him one of the hottest properties on the classical music scene. This programme brings together for the first time a reconstruction of six violin concertos from the manuscript which Vivaldi presented to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI in 1728. A royal treat indeed!

"With violinist Andrew Manze... holding the reins... you can feel electricity crackle again." - The Times, London

This title was released for the first time in 2004.

'At the moment René Jacobs recording is still the prime recording of this work.' Robert Hugill, musicweb-international 'Cavalli s opera is a strangely distorted retelling of the myth of Jason, made all the more bizarre by intercutting the tragi-heroic story with comic commedia dell arte-like scenes...there are some gorgeous musical moments, and overall the work is curiously compelling. Michael Chance paints a convincing portrait of Jason s ambiguous character, Gloria Banditelli makes an icily imposing Medea, and Catherine Dubosc a suitably anguished Hypsipyle.' Kate Bolton, ****/***** The plot is loosely based on the story of Jason [Giasone] and the Golden Fleece, but the opera contains many comic elements too, as well as an abundance of satire. This was the most performed opera of the whole 17th century, and if you're looking for an Italian opera that's even more exciting and accessible than Monteverdi's 'Coronation of Poppea', you need go no further. Recorded in 1988.

La Simphonie du Marais / Hugo Reyne

"In 1990, Hugo Reyne and his period-instrument ensemble La Simphonie du Marais recorded and Harmonia Mundi published what was not exactly the "complete" Symphonies for the King's Suppers of Michel-Richard Delalande, but, with 5 hours of music filling 4 CDs, the best thing to be had thus far - and still now... it was 5 hours of sheer enjoyment, thanks to his skilful instrumentations (the manuscripts come in the form of two- or three-part scores with hardly any indication of instrumentation, so it falls on each interpreter to provide his own), his free use of percussion instruments in the dance numbers, adding great color and dynamism, and his genuine sense of authentic style and phrasings...". "But the good news now is that one doesn't need to settle for less anymore: Harmonia Mundi has announced, for August, the reissue of the complete set, Delalande Complete Symphonies. For those who'd still be on a diet of music feasting, this CD of selections, in this edition or in its original guise, depending on market price, remains the choice." review

Monteverdi was seventy-one when he published his Eighth Book of madrigals. It is the culmination of a genre, the Italian madrigal, which here achieves a rare state of perfection.

In comparison to his 200 or so cantatas, the masses take up only a minimal portion of Bach's enormous output; they are dominated, of course, by the celebrated (and Catholic) Mass in B minor, which Cantus Cölln recorded in 2003. Contrary to what their Latin titles might seem to imply, the four short masses, composed in Leipzig between 1735 and 1744, belong to the sphere of the Reformed liturgy, and are therefore limited to the Kyrie and Gloria, with just six separate numbers in each mass.

Handel was 63 years old when he composed Solomon, one of his final masterpieces. This monumental oratorio depicts the three highpoints of the biblical king's life: the building of the temple, the famous judgment, and the visit of the Queen of Sheba. With a dramatic instinct keener than ever, the composer did not hesitate to combine political and patriotic reflections with exaltation of carnal love and celebration of earthly riches. This ‘perfect marriage of music and English words', as Winton Dean has called it, caused the composer serious financial difficulties in 1749 on account of the exceptional forces it required – but today, under the baton of Daniel Reuss, it finds performers totally devoted to its noble cause!

Coming from a family of Sino-Swiss artist Louis Schwizgebel became known to a wider audience in 2012 after receiving the
second prize at the International Piano Competition in Leeds (broadcast live on BBC TV and BBC Radio Four 3). Regular on
the appointment, he won at the age of 17 years, the Geneva International Competition and two years later the Young Concert
Artists International Auditions in New York.
Time magazine had long since announced that Louis Schwizgebel earn "its place among the elite of the international scene,"
Die Nordostscheweiz proclaimed "visionary creator" when The New York Times praised the brilliance of his game.
There is no doubt that music lovers will appreciate the finesse of this pianist poet.
And it is the poetry that Louis Schwizgebel decided to dedicate his first album.
In Gaspard de la nuit, Ravel transcribed three poems in the collection of Aloysius Bertrand, considered the founder of prose
poetry book. There reflects the tenderness of romance and sensuality.
The perpetual motion of Auf dem Wasser zu singen, melancholy and lyrical Ständchen, and the sinister swirl of Goethe Erlkönig: three Schubert songs transcribed by Liszt.
With Elis Louis Schwizgebel plunges us into the bruised innocence poems of Georg Trakl music by Holliger, to finish on the lighter theme loves Liszt: The Valley Obermann centerpiece of the first book of the year of pilgrimage.
Poems of Louis Schwizgebel is hard to literary resonances for love, marriage of music and poetry.

Image Amadis
After 'Roland', 'Persée', 'Bellérophon' and, most recently, 'Phaéton', Christophe Rousset continues his revival of Lully's tragédies lyriques, written at the time of Louis XIV, with this performance of 'Amadis', one of the composer s finest scores: a masterpiece of French music, wonderfully balanced, extremely accomplished. It was Louis XIV himself who asked Lully and his librettist Quinault to base an opera on Montalvo s early 16th C 'Amadís de Gaula', thus breaking with the usual mythological subjects and giving them an opportunity to change significantly the general intention of the tragédie lyrique genre. For the first time the prologue is closely linked to the main body of the work. The symphonic pieces, supported by trumpets and kettledrums, are quite remarkable, especially the final chaconne, which is probably the finest in the whole of French opera. The arias are full of feeling, with the famous Bois épais , Tu me trahis, malheureux , Il m appelle moving constantly between heroic courage and the sadness caused by fearful love. 'Amadis', premièred in Paris in 1684, was performed constantly in the capital until 1772 and is here captured in a new recording from 4-6 July 2013 at the Opéra royal du Château de Versailles.

Louis Schwizgebel was selected by BBC Radio 3 as a BBC New Generation Artist. This third album for Aparté is devoted to two early masterpieces by Beethoven, performed with one of Britain s finest orchestras, the London Philharmonic, conducted by Thierry Fischer. After his performances of these two Beethoven concertos at the Verbier Festival, under Charles Dutoit, at the Leeds competition and elsewhere, this recording is an eagerly awaited event in the young pianist s career. Schwizgebel has been described as 'a pianist with a profound gift', The Guardian, and an 'insightful musician&' by the NY Times. Born in 1987, he is already well-known on the international scene with appearances at Carnegie Hall, Vienna Musikverein and this year he made his Proms debut at Royal Albert Hall.

Born in 1823 and dying in 1892, Édouard Lalo encompassed this period of Romanticism that witnessed the evolution of the romance de salon genre into the mélodie française or French art song. Injustice of posterity: only Fauré, Duparc and Debussy have acquired true fame in this genre, and yet, Lalo's compositions boast a profusion of ideas and perfect adaptability to aesthetic evolutions. The two scènes de salon for voice and piano (Le Novice and L'Adieu au désert) thus fall within a practice going back to the First Empire, whereas the seven romances (six of which are settings of texts by the excellent lyricist Béranger) stem from a mode that was at its height under the July Monarchy. As for the 23 mélodies written between 1855 and 1890 - some of them on texts by Victor Hugo - they perhaps owe their vocal inspiration to Lalo's marriage to the contralto Julie Bernier de Maligny. This would explain the particular care and quality brought to this corpus, not yet well enough known.

This disc is the second in the series devoted to French song and coproduced with the Palazzetto Bru Zane.

This album dedicated to Camille Saint-Saëns came about as a result of a sensational performance of the Concerto No. 2, performed in 2014 with the BBCSO. Convinced of the value of this, the label Aparté and BBC radio decided to join forces to produce, under the same conditions, the Concerto No. 5 to complete this transcendent programme.

Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as "a pianist with a profound gift" by the Guardian (August 2013), an "insightful musician" by the New York Times (May 2013) and "already one of the great masters of the piano" by Res Musica (July 2014). At the age of 17 he won the Geneva International Music Competition and, two years later, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. In 2012 he won second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition and he is a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2015/16.

Louis records for Aparté and his first solo disc, 'Poems', [AP067] which features works by Ravel, Liszt, Holliger and Schubert was released in 2013 to exceptional critical claim. Germany's Fono Forum gave the disc four stars and hailed Louis "a genuine virtuoso, a spirited young genius with real depth"

Each appearance of Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset leaves an unforgettable memory with those who have had the good fortune to hear them commune on stage. Long-standing partners, they now join together for the first time on disc for a composer they worship: the mysterious Antoine Forqueray. Born in 1672 in Paris, he was, with Marin Marais, one of the greatest gambists of all time. Famed for his virtuosic improvisations, he published none of his 300-odd pieces and died in 1745 in Mantes where he had moved in 1731, after having suffered serious financial setbacks, especially in the course of Law's bankruptcy. Aside from a few handwritten pieces copied in the collections of other composers, Forqueray's pieces have been lost.

The release of the 'Pièces de viole', to which the present recording is devoted, is thus the sole important testimony to his oeuvre.

Atsushi Sakai studied cello with Christophe Coin and is often to be found as a continuo player in ensembles such as Les Talens Lyriques and Le Concert d'Astrée, with which he has performed in a large number of concerts and recordings. He is co-founder of Sit Fast (consort of viols) and the Quatuor Cambini-Paris.

Image Ariane consolée par Bacchus
Couperin came from a dynasty of musicians very much in the public eye, starting with the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. This dynasty would remain important after the death of Francois Couperin, known as Couperin le Grand ('the Great'). Chosen personally by the Sun King for the Chapelle Royale at Versailles, he was quickly forgotten after his death, being eclipsed by Rameau. However history would consider him the most accomplished expression of French genius in the 18th century.

Here, the cantata 'Ariane consolée par Bacchus' is unveiled and served by a dream cast led by Christophe Rousset. This first release on the Aparté label is the forerunner of a boxed set to celebrate the occasion of Couperin's 250th birthday.

Image La Reine
It was in 2015 that Julien Chauvin decided to bring back to life one of the most famous orchestras of the late 18th century, Le Concert de la Loge Olympique. Founded in 1783 and owing its lasting fame for having commissioned Joseph Haydn's 'Paris' Symphonies, it gave its first concerts under the high patronage of Marie-Antoinette, hence the subtitle of the fourth 'Paris' Symphony: 'La Reine'. Although the name has been slightly changed today, now called Le Concert de la Loge, this ensemble perpetuates the same tradition of excellence as its illustrious namesake. On the programme, of course, recording the cycle of these 'Paris' Symphonies and, to get the series off to a start, this famous 'Reine'.

Julien Chauvin combines not only instrumental works by various composers but also vocal arias). Thus the fabulous Sandrine Piau, a distinguished guest of this first recording, ideally portrays the gentle Sélène in the world premiere recording of an aria from Giuseppe Sarti's 'Didone abbandonata' (1762) and offers dazzling virtuosity in Diane's spectacular aria from Johann Christian Bach's serenade 'Endimione'. The listener will also (re)discover a little gem by Henri-Joseph Rigel, violist in Le Concert de la Loge Olympique: the Symphony Op. 12 no.4 (1774). With this first release, Julien Chauvin has created a stunningly beautiful disc, enhanced by the famous recording quality of the Aparté label and accompanied by a richly informed booklet.

Image À Madame
At the court of Versailles, the daughters of Louis XV (referred to as 'Mesdames'), and in particular Adélaïde, devoted themselves to a regular practice of music and, apparently, demonstrated talent. Numerous composers (Simon, Rameau, Balbastre, Cardonne, Guignon) played for them, worked with them, and dedicated several works to them. 'À Madame, Divertissement pour Adélaïde', is an anthology, subjectively put together, of compositions that resounded in their drawing room. All the works on this programme are world premieres. These lovely, rare nuggets are mixed with a the marvellous carillons of the Marc-Antoine Le Nepveu clock (currently in the Cabinet de la Méridienne, located at the heart of the palace of Versailles, on the first floor).

Image Catharsis
Around the year 1600, a group of Florentine aristocrats, inspired by ancient Greek drama, gave birth to opera. They intended to move and glorify human passions in such a strong way that the spectator's soul would be cleansed of these passions. This was the process that Aristotle called 'catharsis'.

Xavier Sabata grasps this highly intense moment at the heart of the destiny of legendary heroes of Baroque opera. A fascinating album by the author of Bad Guys, accompanied by George Petrou and Armonia Atenea.

Louis XIV and Napoléon were well aware of the great efficiency of music as propaganda weapon. One won't be surprised that the 19th century, which saw a succession of many antagonistic governments, presents such an infinite repertoire of satitical and demagogic works dedicated to elections and sovereignty. The "Vote for me!" recital invites the audience to attend the rhetorical performance, the people's lament or the manoeuvring. Any resemblance with... is purely coincidental.

Until today Fernand de La Tombelle has remained unknown, even to the music lovers of oddities. Yet he was a virtuoso organ player, a much valued teacher (cofounder of the Schola Cantorum with Vincent d'Indy) and a challenging and sophisticated composer. Relevant examples of this are his mélodies that cover a long period of his life as a creator, leading from the Saint-Saëns' romanticism to the Poulenc's post-war years. His musical language favours the vocal style of Massenet but the harmonic richness and the variety of atmospheres prove La Tombelle was not an epigone.

After an audacious label and album debut dedicated to Webern, Beethoven and Yun, the young musicians of the Novus Quartet interpret with passion two essential works from Tchaikovsky's chamber music: the First Quartet and the Sextet 'Souvenir de Florence' aided and abetted by two guests, cellist Ophélie Gaillard and viola player Lise Berthaud.

These two works, milestones in the career of the composer (the first written in 1871; the second in 1887), show Tchaikovsky's inclination for popular melodies. Clarity and technique serving musical expression, the fiery strings of the Novus Quartet spread a warm, homogenous sound that invites melancholy, in the slow movements, and paints the exultation of Tchaikovsky's poetic universe.

Friend of Mahler, fasinated by the art of Wagner, dazzled by the audacity of Schoenberg or Busoni, Sibelius was not yet 30 when he became fixated on the Finnish myths and songs of the Kalevala.

Paul Daniel and his ONBA have recorded Sibelius, in his anniversary year, for Actes Sud after a series of concerts this Spring. Daniel draws inspiration from 'Lemminkäinen Legends', composed between 1893 and 1895. Six years later, Sibelius traveled to Italy at the invitation of Baron Axel Capelin and meditated on a symphonic poem around the character of Don Juan. However his writing philosophy changed and mutated into Symphony No. 2, which was premiered March 8, 1802 in Helsinki.

Surely one of the greatest gifts the Lutheran Church ever made to music was to have charged Bach with the duty of producing a cantata for every week of the year! He left us no fewer than three for the first Sunday in Advent alone, composed between 1714 (at Weimar) and 1724-31 (at Leipzig). They are inspired in very different ways by Luther's original chorale: it is as if all of baroque Germany is contained between the sobriety of BWV 61 and the ambitious frescoes of BWV 36 and 62... 'Forty years after its foundation it s all too easy to take the excellence and consistency of Collegium Vocale Ghent for granted: back in 1970 there wasn t any such ensemble in mainland Europe. Philippe Herreweghe, a psychiatry student, founded CVG to put his ideas into practice...CVG became part of the first complete Bach cantata project for Telefunken, Herreweghe, at hospital in the day, conducting his choir in the evening sessions... Presentation is exemplary: top quality at mid price, and a birthday gift that really will keep on giving.' Andrew McGregor, BBC Music Magazine, June 2010

Image La Clarinette à l'Opéra
19th century Italian opera inspired any number of adaptations, arrangements and other kinds of 'paraphrase' (to use the contemporary term), whose raison d'être was the public's pressing desire to have available at home what it had so enjoyed on stage. At a time when the gramophone was not yet in existence, it was thanks to the piano and/or such instruments as violin, trumpet or clarinet that the ordinary music lover could relive the intensity of the great scenes of Cavalleria Rusticana, Tosca and Rigoletto. So Alessandro Carbonare has made a point of paying the most respectful of tributes to such forgotten craftsmen as Bassi, G. Salieri and Carlo della Giacoma: it is to them that the clarinet owes the finest works in this genre, as this CD of rarities will demonstrate.

This title was released for the first time in 2001.

Image Sonata in B minor / Piano Works
This CD presents the two faces of Franz Liszt: the Sonata in B minor shows us a forty-year-old virtuoso, overflowing with enthusiasm - an exuberance much more evident in the work's form than in its character. Thirty years later, it is an entirely different man who opens his heart in La lugubre gondola, Unstern and Schlaflos: in the meantime, the old man has lost his lovers and friends, and confesses to an inextinguishable 'bitterness of heart'.

Image Overtures - Music for the Hamburg Opera
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin

'Not the least ornament and embellishment of this city': it was in such terms that the Hamburg town council described the status of music in the city's public life in the year 1615. 40 years after the opening of the first public opera house (in Venice), the date of 1678 marked the inauguration of its German equivalent: this was the stamping ground of such

masters as Keiser, Erlebach and Schürmann, but also of a certain (very!) young man named Georg Friedrich Handel. This CD contains a selection of the finest overtures and orchestral suites from the Hamburg Opera's first 40 years.

Image Concerti grossi Op.1
A Baroque Paganini!
Like Vivaldi, Pietro Antonio Locatelli was both an outstanding instrumentalist and an erudite composer. He dazzled the whole of Europe with his virtuoso skills from 1723 onwards. To be sure, his Concerti grossi owe a great deal to the model of Corelli – except that, in many respects, the disciple consistently outstrips the master. High positions, virtuoso arpeggios, triple stopping, complex trills, wide intervallic leaps at rapid tempo: only Nicolò Paganini was to risk passages of comparable difficulty, but a century later!

Image Violin Concerto No 2
Long overshadowed by the reputation of his Bohemian compatriots Smetana, Dvorák and Janácek, Bohuslav Martinu is at last enjoying his fair share of the limelight. Commentators have so often confined themselves to describing his music in terms of multiple influences – Roussel, French music, the 18th-century concerto grosso – that they have tended to forget his own strong personality and his perfect assimilation of Baroque style. The three works presented on this recording display the Czech composer's endless creativity within the framework of a vivid concertante language.

Image Lamentazione per la Settimana Santa
Music-lovers are by now familiar with the Tenebrae Lessons, the settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah sung throughout Catholic Europe on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings of Holy Week. The Renaissance had delighted in them, and France under Louis XIV was to cultivate the genre to excess. In Italy, the fashion for Lamentazioni belongs to the first half of the 17th century, as witness the 23 cycles of manuscript Q43 of the Museo musicale in Bologna, all by composers active in Rome at the time. Maria Cristina Kiehr and Concerto Soave revive the pleasures of sheer contrition to be had from singing words such as afflictio, dolor, and lamentatio . . .

This title was released for the first time in 2007.

Brahms was especially fond of the sound of the natural horn, which he saw as the embodiment of Romantic lyricism. Although the valve horn had begun to replace it in the early 19th century, it was for the older instrument, the Waldhorn, that he wrote his Trio Op.40, today still the summit of the repertoire for its unusual forces. Here three young musicians attempted to reconstruct the trio's original sound as precisely as possible, with conspicuous success!

Composers who dared to set the poetic works of Victor Hugo knew they had a challenge on their hands! Yet they managed to extract from this monument of literature the texts that would most benefit from their music, and between them created a multiple portrait: here is every facet of the poet, from the ethereal or sensual lover to the committed political figure, contemplating the world in verse of biting irony or Romantic lyricism. The young Konstantin Wolff has audibly taken great pleasure in tackling these subtly nuanced evocations.

Image Hungarian Dances
The product of close study of Gypsy folklore, the Hungarian Dances were originally destined for piano four hands; they were subsequently orchestrated, but Brahms himself also made a reduction for piano solo. Cédric Tiberghien has chosen to complete his programme with the eight Piano Pieces op.76, and the 16 Waltzes op.39, which offer a highly personal vision of the genre, in the tradition of Schubert and Schumann.

Harmonie Ensemble New York / Steven Richman

Grammy-nominated Steven Richman and the sensational Harmonie Ensemble New York recreate Henry Mancini's trend-setting jazz score for 'Peter Gunn' and revive the original orchestrations of George Gershwin favourites including 'Rhapsody in Blue' made by the composer and by Ferde Grofé in the 1920s and 1930s. In 'Music for Peter Gunn' alongside ace old-school improvisers Lew Soloff [trumpet] and Lew Tabackin [sax], they place their own stamp on these iconic orchestrations in the first recording since Henry Mancini's own in 1958.
