Image Milestones of a Jazz Legend (10 CD)
Sarah Vaughan (1924-1990) was the next big star among jazz singers after Billie Holiday (1915-59) and Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996). In contrast to her colleagues, she had a sound musical education and was a very good pianist, which enabled her to keep up with the young Bebop musicians from the beginning.
Sarah Vaughan grew up in a very Christian family in Newark, New Jersey, as a single child. She received piano lessons from the age of 7 and took an active part in the musical life of her church, as a chorus-singer and pianist. Early on, she was also interested in the latest music she heard on the radio and on records and discovered her love for jazz. In the local music scene, she and her friends were able to experience excellent musicians, and Vaughan used every occasion for her first performances as a singer and pianist. At the age of 18, she regularly went to New York's great ballrooms, where the world's best jazz orchestras appeared every day. At an amateur competition at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, she impressed the singer Billy Eckstine so much that he invited her to an audition with Earl Hines, the leader of the orchestra he appeared with at the time, who immediately hired her as a second pianist and soon afterwards as the female vocal soloist next to Eckstine. In this group she met Dizzy Gillespie for the first time. The often hard touring life did not bother her, and after Billy Eckstine founded his own orchestra in 1944, she went with him. All future star soloists of the Bebop movement, from Miles Davis via Dizzy Gillespie, Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon to Charlie Parker, were in Eckstine's band. Her solo-career began with recordings for small labels, and she was soon signed by Columbia Records until 1953. Her great success began with her contract with Mercury Records, where she was able to record pure orchestral productions on the one hand and straight jazz albums on the other. Sarah Vaughan’s best recordings from the 50s and early 60s can be found on this CD box.

Image Bridges
Building bridges is what music is all about, from us to them from inside to outside, from the universe of sound back to the world we live in. But that is just one of the reasons for Volker Goetze, the internationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer, born in Germany, at home in New York for the past 15 years, to call his new album “Bridges”. “They just fascinate me”, the 45 year old says. “Global citizens identify with them and in the process obtain an identity. There are many bridges I love including the road bridge in Saint-Louis over the Senegal river as well as beautifully construc-ted ones in Paris, London or the one in my birth town Cologne.” Goetze is renowned for his ongoing collaboration with the Senegalese Kora virtuoso Ablaye Cissoko, with their album “Amanké Dionti” a Top 20 success for the label Motéma from Har-lem, New York, in France five years ago. His main focus is to create an even more concrete, even broader fusion of West African traditions and those of jazz. The references of this unique music are rather diverse: from rhythms that have found their way from Nigeria to Cuba and further on into the world, from the Funk-Jazz of the Brecker Brothers to grooves that have their roots in the Soul music of the Seventies. Above it all rises the spirit of improvisation in the collaborating musicians from three continents – including Herbie Hancock‘s longtime drummer Richie Barshay, clarine-tist Oran Etkin, and the Estonian pianist Kristjan Randalu, known for his work with Dhafer Youssef. “Having a chance to meet one of the finest Fulani flutists of West Africa and practicing the flute melodies on the trumpet, I wanted to compose a song for Ousmane Bah”, Volker Goetze says. “All he owns is a blue shirt, pants and a couple of flutes. Music is all he has. In many ways I often admire his simple life traveling from place to place just making music. The rhythms of the song “Fulani Dance” are rooted in a Gambian dance called Kundum.” Together these musicians expand the playing field of creative improvisation and find musical bridges, often over thousands of miles.

Image Sound of Red
GRAMMY nominated René Marie takes us to that space on
Sound of Red, her first album of all-original material. Set for a May
13, 2016, release on Motema Music/ MustHaveJazz/ Membran,
the album’s 11 songs – some of them autobiographical –
provide glimpses of the many small but profound turning points
that are a part of an individual life. René’s clever songcraft and
sensual vocal delivery make those personal moments not only
meaningful but enlightening to a broad audience.
Sound of Red – the intensely personal and sometimes difficult
internal score that plays out in each of our hearts as we make
our way along our journey – is something worth listening to,
says René. “I wrote these songs to create a safe place for
people to tune in to their emotions and perhaps deal with them
in a way that they might not be able to do otherwise,” she says.
“Maybe it’ll make them call whoever they’re estranged from.
Maybe it’ll make them more determined to do the right thing.
I don’t know, but that’s what I’m hoping for. I just want people
to be touched.”
The album features her „Experiment in Truth“ ensemble with
select horn arrangements by Etienne Charles, and a brilliant
guitar feature from Brazilian legend Romero Lubambo.

Joey Alexander’s 2015 debut album for Motéma Music “My Favorite Things” garnered two Grammy Award nominations for “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” and “Best Improvised Solo” for his performance of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps”, making him the youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy. His performances on the 58th Annual Grammy Awards broadcast received standing ovations from the starstudded audience.

Wynton Marsalis says of Joey, “There has never been anyone that you can think of who could play like that at his age.” Now Joey takes another step in charting his artistic direction with the release of “Countdown”, his sophomore album. The nine songs showcase Joey’s remarkable development as a contemporary jazz bandleader and composer. He develops fresh takes on well-known tunes, combining them with three of his own original compositions. “You know, I love both creating music in the studio and performing for people onstage,” he says, “but I have to admit there’s something special about getting a crowd excited by playing jazz live. In most situations I try to be calm, but I love the intense energy that happens between me and the audience.”

Image Transcendence: Work Songs
Jaimeo Brown Transcendence's Work Songs Resurrects Stories of Workers and Prisoners Worldwide in a Call to Action During Tense Times in America. The Album Fuses Jazz, Hip Hop, and Blues on 12 Sample-Heavy Original Tracks. „Work Songs represents us," Brown explains. "It's our human journey of transcending the difficult." At a time where it feels like history is repeating itself and the world has lost its way, drummer, composer, educator and activist Jaimeo Brown asks, "What is important?" For Brown, the answer is to tell the unheard stories in the name of those who need them. To tell the stories of life and the human experience. To tell the stories of the forgotten: to honor the workers and the music of their lives. February 12, 2016 marks the release of Work Songs, the second installment in the Jaimeo Brown Transcendence series. Jaimeo Brown Transcendence is the product of long-time collaboration between Brown and co-producer/guitarist Chris Sholar (who won a GRAMMY® Award for his work on Kanye West and Jay-Z's Watch the Throne). Both emerging from a generation that appreciates the jazz in hip-hop, the artists with whom this duo has collaborated with speaks for itself. Brown, as drummer, has sat behind the skins for Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Q-Tip, Carl Craig, Kenny Garrett, Geri Allen, and Bobby Hutcherson, among others. Sholar's work as guitarist and producer has spanned the likes of Beyonce, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest, Robert Glasper, D'Angelo, Just Blaze, Common, Dr. Dre and more. The digital tapestry that birthed Work Songs also hosts several contributors: Jaleel Shaw and JD Allen on alto and tenor saxophone, respectively; legendary soul and blues vocalist Lester Chambers; the Gee's Bend Quilters (who were the central focus of Jaimeo Brown Transcendence's debut album), and rising star keyboardists BIG YUKI and James Francies. Work Songs is a call to action, a call to transcend: transcend traditional limits of creativity; transcend oppression; transcend to come together through the essential humanity that unites us.

Charenee Wade is not one to hold back or let fear stand in her
way. The first artist ever to enter two Thelonious Monk Vocal
competitions, she walked away from the second one in 2010 with instant buzz and second place just after her new and soon to be much celebrated friend Cecilé McLorin Salvant. Now is the time for Wade's star to rise. Known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. With her debut, "Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson" (June 26th), she pays tribute to
another inspiration, the socially conscious poet and musician Gil

Image Why?
The first album in eight years from the legendary drummer Ginger Baker, who is best known for his time with the game-changing supergroup Cream (with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce) and for being a true music pioneer. On 'Why?' he leads his powerhouse Jazz Confusion quartet, which includes The J.B.'s saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth and Ghanaian percussionist Abass Dodoo.

On the heels of the 2012 documentary Beware of Mr. Baker, which brought him and his fascinating life to a wider public, Ginger Baker takes the influences that helped shape him and puts them out front on 'Why?'. They perform a potent mix of jazz and afrobeat across eight songs, which includes compositions by Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, a traditional Nigerian song, plus originals by Pee Wee Ellis and Mr. Baker. The 'Why?' show has been delighting sell-out audiences throughout the UK and Europe and has translated brilliantly to this beautifully produced album.

Influenced by a love of African drumming and the great jazz drummers Art Blakey, Max Roach and Elvin Jones, Ginger's unique style of drumming created the foundation for an entirely new sound in rock music. AllMusic has described him as "rock's first superstar drummer and the most influential percussionist of the 1960s" and stated that "virtually every drummer of every heavy metal band that has followed since that time has sought to emulate some aspect of Baker's playing."

Personnel: Ginger Baker (drums), Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone), Alec Dankworth (bass), Abass Dodoo (percussion)

"Den hårdslående vilden från The Cream spelar jazz (Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter och helt egna egna låtar) med JB's-saxofonisten Pee Wee Ellis och massor av slagverk. Veckans överraskning!"

Image Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better
Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better is a bold statement that builds
upon the entire breadth of Harris’ already esteemed reputation,
demonstrating his enormous versatility within the full scope of his
highly creative musical vision. Swinging jazz, rich R&B, sumptuous
balladry, wailing rock, rumbling blues and even a touch of playful
Brazilian are all woven seamlessly into the tapestry of a musical
odyssey that is all Allan Harris. With a deeply resonant baritone/
tenor voice that is soulful, richly expressive and flawless in both
intonation and phrasing, Harris displays a total command and fluency
in every context.
Back from the previous album are the GRAMMY® Award-winning
producer Brian Bacchus and Harris’ longtime keyboard cohort
Pascal Le Boeuf (on acoustic and electric pianos, and Hammond
B3 organ), whose deep understanding and empathy for Harris’ music
creates a marvelous sense of intimacy and shared joy of expression.
Pascal is also the primary instrumental soloist and delivers in an
inspired fashion throughout. Joining Pascal in the exceptional rhythm
section are Russell Hall on acoustic and electric bass, Shirazette
Tinnin on drums and cajón, and Freddie Bryant on both electric
and classical guitar. Together, with Harris also on acoustic, electric
and resonator guitar, they provide impeccably flawless support,
whether driving, embellishing, shaping or enhancing the settings as
ideally suited to the intent of the music.
Nobody’s Gonna Love You Better (Black Bar Jukebox
Redux) will continue to build his legacy as another milestone in the
extraordinary artistic aesthetic of Allan Harris.

Tenor-saxophonist Coleman „The Hawk“ Hawkins (1904-1969) was one of the most important instrumentalists of Jazz. The „father of the saxophone“ conquered this hitherto unpopular instrument for Jazz and influenced generations to come. He had a strong personality, a great presence, and an enormous musical inquisitiveness, so that he remained stylistically up to date until well into the 1960s.

From 1924 on he was a member of the newly formed Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, which also included Louis Armstrong for a year, and soon became the first major jazz ensemble. From 1934 to 1939 Hawkins lived in Europe, where he enjoyed great popularity and recorded with European and American musicians. After returning to New York he had to defend his throne: students like Ben Webster, Chu Berry and Buddy Tate had been able to establish themselves during his absence. But with the phenomenal success of his „Body and Soul“ recording of 1939 and after a few jam sessions, he once again became the king of the tenor saxophone. Early on, he supported the young Bebop musicians and promoted them as players in his bands, especially Thelonious Monk. He often toured with the Jazz At The Philharmonic ensembles and recorded many great albums once the LP-format was established in the mid-fifties.

Yusef Lateef (1920-2013) was respectfully baptized „The Gentle
Giant“ by his musician friends Jimmy Heath and Kenny Barron.
During his long and rewarding lifetime Lateef developed into
one of the most versatile and influential personalities of African
American music. Starting out as a Jazz tenor saxophonist
schooled in Blues and Swing bands in Detroit in the Thirties and
Forties, he was the oldest of many great Modern Jazz musicians
originating from there, such as Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Pepper
Adams, Kenny Barron, Paul Chambers and the Jones Brothers.
With Lucky Millinder, Roy Eldridge, Hot Lips Page he played for
the best bands of that era and finally became part of the Dizzy
Gillespie band in the late forties. There he was inspired by Dizzy´s
experiments with Afro Cuban rhythms to look further into the
music of the Near East. He returned to Detroit in 1950, changed
his given name William Evans to Yusef Lateef, became member of
a non-radical Islamic community and started his studies of flute
and composition at Wayne State University. In the meantime he
played with his own bands around town and developed a unique
sound concept incorporating music from non-western cultures
and the use of instruments not yet used in Jazz bands, such as
all kinds of flutes, the oboe and more. The New York Times wrote
in his obituary: „He played world music before world music had
a name.“ When he took his band and music to New York City
in 1957, he became a favorite of almost every independent jazz
label operating at the time. As a leader he recorded the incredible
amount of 17 albums until 1962 – the only other leader matching
that number during that time was none other than Miles Davis.
This is the period our boxset documents. Accompanied by rather
unknown but top rate musicians, who had learned and developed
Lateef´s music through countless performances, it is hard to single
out any album as the best of the bunch. By 1960 Lateef had moved
to NYC and continued his studies at Manhattan School of Music.
Still he found time to be part of other major bands and recording
sessions, for instance with Randy Weston – a true brother in mind
of Lateef –, Clark Terry, Paul Chambers and Nat Adderley. Listen
and you will discover your own favorites. Besides many academic
degrees, Grammy and other awards, Yusef Lateef was honored
with the lifetime Jazz Master Fellowship Award from the National
Endowment for the Arts in 2010.
That there was respect and comradery between East and West
Coast musicians is best documented by Modern Jazz Quartet
musical mind and pianist John Lewis and his beautiful album
„Great Encounter“ gathering some of the best musicians of both
ends of North America. But here in this collection is so much to
find and enjoy and all justified by no one else but the Duke: „It
don´t mean a thing if it ain´t got that......“.

Pianist Ramsey Lewis is among the elite few jazz musicians to have landed pophits with songs like „The In Crowd“, „Hang On Sloopy“, and „Wade In The Water“. Born in Chicago in 1930, he learned to play the piano at the age of four and
began his professional career as a fifteen-year-old in the band „The Cleffs“. His career is reminiscent of that of his five year older colleague, Ahmad Jamal, who had begun to make a name for himself in Chicago since 1950 and led his own trio early on, instead of playing piano in many different bands. That is why there
are so few recordings featuring them as sidemen. His trio with Issac „Redd“ on drums and Eldee Young on bass, the former core of “The Cleffs”, remained active until 1966. Following their debut „Ramsey Lewis
and his Gentle-men of Swing“, they mastered their success formula, which consisted of a more grounded approach with strong blues and soul elements as opposed to the more intellectual Ahmad Jamal. Occasionally the trio was supported by strings and winds, to make the continuous production of the trio
more varied. But also the few Sideman recordings of Lewis show that he was a great talent at the piano, no matter in which context. With the vibraphonist Lem Winchester there was an interesting sound comparison to the modern
jazz quartet in the same cast. Also the very rare recording in the project of the Ellington bassist Jimmy Woode is a real jewel. That the singer Lorez Alexandria never made the big breakthrough remains an eternal puzzle, because their production with Ramsey Lewis can be heard today with great joy. As a versed hard-bop pianist, Lewis shines in the high-caliber band of drummer giant Max
Roach. Although Lewis later made his music more commercial, he still enjoys a great popularity, also as a radio presenter. Feat. Ramsey Lewis, Max Roach, Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Lorez Alexandria,
Paul Gonsalves, Lem Winchester, Eldee Young, Issac „Redd“ Holt, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Oliver Nelson.

Image What We Bring
Ben Wendel‘s What We Bring, available September 9, 2016 on
Motema Music/Membran, is panegyrical, acknowledging the
great legacy and lexicon that he has played and composed his way into. While composing the music for this album, it occurred to Wendel that the evolution of a musical genre, or artist, is a continuum that looks backwards and forwards at the same time. Wendel elaborated, „What We Bring refers to the experience, inspiration and shared wisdom that musicians collect and absorb throughout their lives, and how that is
expressed through their art. All of the pieces on this album are dedicated to masters from the past, peers from the present and musicians of the future. In my opinion, nothing springs from a vacuum - all that we make is connected, influenced, and most importantly, indebted to what has been created before us and around us in the present day. This album expresses my continued acknowledgement and appreciation to all of those who have helped me along the path, both directly and
indirectly.“ Wendel added, „I get the most joy when I find ways to express my love for the bravery of the people who came before me, for the people who are doing this music now, and
for the people who will do this music in the future“ (from the feature on Wendel by Ted Panken, DownBeat Magazine, June 2016).
On What We Bring, Wendel‘s comaraderie with his fellow musicians, Gerald Clayton (piano), Joe Sanders (bass) and Henry
Cole (drums) greatly informed his artistic choices and inspired him. He has stated (in a recent feature by Bob Weinberg, Jazziz Magazine, Spring 2016) that, „it‘s hard to know where the music starts and the friendship ends“, and that, „all of these layers of understanding and all the coded information that‘s
embedded in how you play together, it‘s so intermingled.“

2012 ECHO Jazz Award: Female Singer of the Year

Membran will release the eighteenth album from genre defying vocalist Cassandra Wilson on June 29. Another Country represents a strong departure from her previous material focusing
largely on guitar-oriented sounds. To foster this new musical direction she again collaborated with jazz guitarist/producer Fabrizio Sotti, with whom she worked with on 2002's Glamoured.
The two started from scratch in Wilson's New Orleans home studio composing arrangements and an entire album's worth of material by combining her lyrics with Sotti's guitar-centric instrumentation.

Sotti says "She is a total and complete musician/artist not just an outstanding voice/instrument." Wilson and Sotti moved the sessions to Florence, Italy where they sought to keep the recordings spare by working with a minimalist band. The group includes Mino Cinelu on percussion, accordion master Julien Labro, Italian bass player Nicola Sorato and African master
percussionist Lekan Babalola which rounded out the album's sound.

Of the album, Wilson says, "One of the greatest gifts we can receive as human beings is the opportunity to walk in someone else's shoes and witness the world through someone else's eyes.
Another Country takes us on a journey filled with experiences that open our hearts and minds to the promise of many worlds with infinite possibilities."

Throughout her decades spanning career, Wilson has received a litany of awards and her music has received high praise for its fusion of jazz, roots, country, pop and world music. Recent accolades include the 2012 Echo Jazz Award for Female Singer of the Year and a BET Soul Train Award in 2011 for Best Traditional Jazz Album for her last album Silver Pony. Among her numerous honors, Wilson has received two Grammy Awards-one for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1996 for New Moon Daughter and another for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her 2009 album Loverly. She dominated the Downbeat "Critics Poll" for 11 consecutive years from 1996 to 2006, and winning again from 2008-2011. Wilson was also awarded the Downbeat "Reader's Poll" ten times, received The Miles Davis Prize at the 1999 Montreal International Jazz Festival and was named "America's Best Singer" in 2001 by TIME. Wilson is also well known for her collaborations including notable performances with The Roots, Wynton Marsalis, Angélique Kidjo, Bill Frisell, Elvis Costello and Terence Blanchard.

The American trumpeter Donald Byrd (1932-2003) was one of the most important representatives of hardbop and, like his colleagues Miles Davis and freddie hubbard, succeeded in redirecting his productions towards funk and soul, thereby fi nding a new audience and conquering the Pop charts, when Rock began pushing Jazz into a niche at the end of the 60s. The 2nd hip hop Generation sampled his albums 'Black Byrd', 'Street Lady" and his productions for the Blackbyrds.

He was also actively involved in projects like Guru's Jazzmatazz. Byrd came from Detroit and was a revered member of the Motor city's Jazz scene, where he learned his craft alongside colleagues such as Kenny Burrell, Tommy flanagan and Pepper Adams, all of whom also moved to New York later on. he also enjoyed a thorough academic education and career, which was always of importance for him as a professor at major us universities. in 1955 he moved to the Big Apple and almost immediately replaced cliff ord Brown, who had recently died under tragic circumstances, in Art Blakey's Jazz Messenger.

In the following years, he played on albums by almost all of the well-known and important colleagues of the time: from Thelonious Monk to John coltrane and sonny Rollins. in addition to leading his own ensembles with Gigi Gryce and old friends from Detroit, he had a quintet with Pepper Adams from 1958-1961 and regularly recorded for Blue Note. Byrd showed his touch for extraordinary talents on piano with collaboration with Duke Pearson and herbie hancock, endorsing the latter in the early stages of his career and also being the one to recommend hancock's collaboration with Miles Davis.

Interestingly, the Byrd composition 'Pentecostal Feelin' from the album 'Free Form', which completes this collection of the most important recordings of Byrd's early work, sounds like a blue print for the fi rst hit for the Blue Note label, Lee Morgan's 'Sidewinder', which was to be released three years later. In the Nineties Byrd returned to the hardbop of his youth and also taught many of the Jazz-stars of today as a professor at various universities.

Cal Tjader was one of the pioneers of Latin Jazz and his principal instrument, the vibraphone, and one of the most important musicians of the West Coast Jazz scene in California. He was born in 1925 to a couple of Swedish dancers in St. Louis, Missouri, when the Vaudeville troupe to which his parents belonged made a stop-over there. The family settled down in San Mateo, California, two years later and Tjader received classical piano and tap dance lessons from his parents. Early live- and movie-appearances brought him the reputation of a tap dancing boy wonder. As a sixteen-year-old, he won a Gene Krupa talent contest as a drummer. After his military service as a paramedic he wanted to become a teacher via the G.I. bill, but he met Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond at San Francisco State College in the late Forties and soon became the drummer in Brubeck‘s Octet. In Brubeck’s trio he switched to drums and vibraphone, being self-taught on the latter. After Brubeck had an accident, Tjader founded his own trio. As the vibraphonist of the popular George Shearing Quintets, he won the Downbeat Critics Poll for the first time in 1953. Tjader and bassist Al McKibbon convinced Shearing to include Cuban percussionists in the band, while Tjader also played bongos. With McKibbon he listened to the most important musicians of the Latin jazz scene: Machito, Chico O‘Farrill and the great percussionists Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo, both members of Tito Puente’s orchestra. He left Shearing not much later and laid the foundation for his world career with the popular Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Quintet. Over the next ten years he recorded 30 albums for Fantasy Records, of which many highlights have been gathered here. He switched to Verve in the 60s, where he landed his biggest hit with „Soul Sauce“. Sadly, he suffered a fatal heart attack on tour in 1982. His music is timeless and was discovered by a young audience through the Acid Jazz DJs at the end of the 80s and was used in a new context by countless samples in important hip-hop productions.

His Royal Highness, William James' 'Count' Basie was one of the most important and influential jazz big band leader. After he left school and started silent films in his native town of Red Bank New Jersey to accompany the piano, William moved in 1924 at the age of 20 in Harlem and quickly got the attention of big band leader of those days. When he eleven years later founded his first jazz orchestra, he already had a wealth of experience and created his unique and often imitated style by letting play split part two tenor saxophones, worked with various arrangers and always stressed the danceable beat of the rhythm section. This 10 CD set presents '' The Best Of The 1950s '' of this amazing leader and his fantastic band - including his most important songs like '' One O Clock Jump '' or '' April in Paris '' - and musicians such as Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Jimmy Rushing and Lester Young

With his warm and balanced sound combined with an incredibly fluent phrasing and intense expression Julian „Cannonball“ Adderley (1928-1975) soon became the most outstanding alto sax player since Charlie Parker. Our collection of the best of his early and middle period show how he sounded before and after he joined Miles Davis´ sextet from late 1957 until 1959. Cannonball and Bill Evans were the major ingredients that turned Davis’ band into the unique ensemble that recorded „Milestones“ and „Kind of Blue“. His new popularity enabled Adderley to reunite with his brother
cornetist Nat and their new quintet signed with the Riverside label where his colleagues Thelonious Monk, Johnny Griffin, Bill Evans and Wes Montgomery had started new successful careers under the patronage of the amazing producer Orrin Keepnews. Cannonballs’s album „In San Francisco“ became an instant hit and was followed by many others, most of which are included in

One of the most important bandleaders in Modern Jazz with fourteen of his most important recordings.

Featuring Wayne Shorter, Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Benny Golson und Cedar Walton.

Art Blakey was one of the true innovators of modern jazz drumming. Having studied with Chick Webb and soon becoming a part of the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, he travelled to Africa to study polyrhythms, which led him to found his various own drum ensembles, with which he recorded later. From 1954 on he became highly successful as a leader, with his Jazz Messengers becoming an institution in hard bop and modern jazz. Art Blakey succeeded in keeping this band, always featuring some of the best musicians of its time, recording and touring until the end of his life. This collection presents some of the best recordings Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers made in the late 1950 and early 1960s, featuring giants like Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Walter Davis, Jr. and Cedar Walton.

Jazz music stimulates the mind and elevates the soul of those who play and hear them and they can immerse themselves fully, said the deceased on June 21, 2014 jazz legend Horace Silver. This quote describes his attitude to music perfectly. His constant search for new ways and the urge to evolve, influenced his work over many years. Raised in Norwalk, Connecticut, he joined the Cape Verdean folk-music of his father and the gospel sounds that he taught his mother, and with the elements of bebop and rhythm n blues created so many of the most important compositions of the hard bop. This 10-CD box set contains many of the greatest albums of the early creative years, his band and as a swinging pianist in the bands of Clark Terry, Art Farmer, Milt Jackson, Paul Chambers and Miles Davis.

Freddie Hubbard left his hometown Indianapolis for New York City at the tender age of twenty in 1958. The Big Apple accepted him right away. None other than Miles Davis, a trumpeter known to be overly critical in judging other musicians, acknowledged

Hubbard´s exceptional talent. After gigs with Philly Joe Jones,
Hubbard (1938-2008) joined Sonny Rollins´s band for a few months, before trombone player Jay Jay Johnson hired him for his popular sextet. After several recording dates as a sideman Blue Note offered him
a recording contract and „Open Sesame“, which starts off our
collection of Hubbard´s early work, was his first album as a leader.
He became the first choice on his instrument for almost every major
bandleader in the early sixties from the more traditional Modern Jazz followers to Avantgarde players like Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and John Coltrane.

From 1961-1966 Freddie Hubbard joined Art Blakey´s Jazz
Messengers before he finally decided to head his own ensembles. In this 10 CD box you will find his first seven albums as a leader plus some of the most important sessions featuring Hubbard as a sideman on straight ahead dates including a few albums, which are as rare as they are beautiful.

Ahmad Jamal has been one of the most popular pianists of modern Jazz since the 1950s – and an early influence on colleagues like Miles Davis. Unlike most pianists, he rarely worked as a sideman, but always led his own trio or performed as a soloist.

Born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as Frederick „Fritz“ Russell Jones, the son of a steelworker started playing piano as a two-year-old. Earl Hines, Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams, and Erroll Garner came from Pittsburgh also and were among his most important jazz influences. As a 14-year-old he began performing professionally and none other than Art Tatum spread the word of Jamal‘s extraordinary talent. John Hammond, talent scout and producer extraordinaire, became aware of Jamal‘s trio „The Three Strings“ in 1951 and recorded them for Okeh. At first in a lineup with piano, guitar and double bass, from the middle of the 50s with drums instead of the guitar. In this format they worked as the house band in the „Pershing Hotel” in Chicago. The live album „But Not For Me“, recorded at the Pershing in 1958, was his artistic breakthrough and a million-seller, and enabled him to open up his own club, the „Alhambra“. To this day Ahmad Jamal is actively recording and touring around the world.

Image 10CD-BOX: Q-Jazz - Legendary Recordings 1956-60
Feat. Gerry Mulligan, Don Byas, Benny Carter, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Benny Bailey, Lucky Thompson, Stephane Grappelli, Kenny Clarke, Art Pepper, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Carl Perkins, Mel Lewis, Billy Taylor, Shelly Manne and many more.

Legendary producer, arranger and all-around musical mastermind Quincy Jones will celebrate his 80th birthday on March 14th 2013. As a special gift to "Q" and his legion of admirers, we have compiled this 10 CD collection of his legendary Jazz-recordings. Spanning ten original albums (a few of which are "as rare as hen's teeth") and four CDs worth of rare European live-recordings with his fabulous big band, they cover the years 1956 until 1960.

In the course of more than 100 tunes, they present the exciting Jazz-origins of the man behind the most Grammy-nominations of all time (79 in all, of which he won a record breaking 27 awards) and masterworks by Michael Jackson or Frank Sinatra. Originally a trumpet-player for Lionel Hampton and a cohort and friend of Ray Charles, Quincy Delight Jones, Jr. found his early success as an arranger - working for Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Count Basie, or even Duke Ellington while still in his teens. He began recording under his own name in the US in 1956, shortly before moving to Paris to study composition with Nadia Boulanger and Oliver Messiaen.

Listening to the exciting and beautiful music in this collection, it is obvious that Quincy Jones was a gift to the world of music already as a very young man. There is only one reason, why the father of seven children chose to leave his beloved Jazz-world in the mid-Sixties. "We had the best jazz band on the planet, and yet we were literally starving", he once said. "That's when I discovered that there was music, and there was the music business. If I were to survive, I would have to learn the difference between the two."

* 10 CD-Box of hits and rarities by one of Jazz‘s most successful artists and one of the originators of so called „world music“
* Including the hit „Coming Home, Baby“
* From solo-recordings via quartet- and big band-settings – the flute never sounded this good

Herbie Mann was the “Pied Piper” of Jazz – his famously fluid flute playing lured legions of music lovers into his wonderfully open world of instrumental music, often fusing Bebop with what would later be called “world music”, from Afro Cuban styles via Brazilian music to music from Africa or the Middle East.
Born Herbert Jay Solomon on April 16, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, he was among the first jazz musicians to specialize in the flute. The nineteen original albums in this 10 CD box-set document the early career of Herbie Mann, by presenting some of his best albums of the period – a treasure trove for collectors and neophytes.

Before André Previn made a name for himself as an internationally
renowned conductor of symphony orchestras, he was considered
one of the most skilled orchestrators, conductors and composers
of American popular music – a „Hollywood-hero“, who played a
big part in the golden age of the “musicals” of the 1950s and
1960s. As one of the best jazz musicians in the United States and
a truly gifted pianist, he was a key figure of the scene in California.
Gathering congenial colleagues around himself, he recorded
many albums, some of which have their fixed place in top ten lists
and were awarded numerous prizes, such as the Oscar for „Porgy

box-set with 13 original albums among highlights from the years
1955-1962, including „Duet“, „West Side Story“, „Double Play“,
„Collaboration“, and „A Touch Of Elegance“. Featured in these

Theodore Walter Rollins, better known as Sonny, the “Jazz
Colossus”, or “Newk”, was born in New York City on September 7,
1930. He grew up on Sugar Hill in Harlem, where he heard a lot of
Jazz in the neighborhood and on the radio, as well as the traditional
music his parents, who were originally from the Virgin Islands,
listened to, and the classical music his older brother practiced
on piano. An uncle gave him his first saxophone when he was
only seven years old and Sonny soon began practicing a lot. In
high school already he formed a band with Jackie McLean, Kenny
Drew, and Art Taylor. He also rehearsed with pianist Thelonious
Monk, whom he still calls his mentor, for several months in 1948,
soon becoming one of the true innovators of Bebop himself, and
going on to record with the leading musicians and groups of the
genre, including Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, Max
Roach, Art Blakey, Monk, and the Modern Jazz Quartet, in the
years to come. One of his regular musical associates during these
early years was Miles Davis, with whom he performed in clubs
from 1949 and recorded from 1951 on, also introducing several
of his now classic compositions – among them „Airegin,“ „Doxy,“
and „Oleo“ – on albums by Miles. Except for a self- imposed
six-year hiatus from 1966 to 1972, Sonny Rollins has remained
active to this day, touring and recording Jazz at the highest level
with his quintet. These 18 albums document his early years as a
leader, when he was already regarded as the most talented and
innovative tenor saxophonist in Jazz.

„The master writer to me (...) was Wayne Shorter. He still is a master. Wayne was one of the few people who brought music to Miles David that didn't get changed." - Herbie Hancock

The legendary Jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, "probably jazz's greatest living small-group composer and a contender for greatest living improviser" (according to Ben Ratliff of the New York Times), celebrates his 80th birthday on August 25, 2013. This 10 CD-box "Original Album Collection" sheds new light on the formative years of "Mr. Gone", as the Newark, New Jersey, native was already known long before his association with Miles Davis' second great quintet (in the 60s) or his genre-bending project Weather Report (70s and 80s).

Including a host of early Shorter-originals like "Down In The Depths", "Seeds Of Sin" or "The Albatross", it also presents the then 26- (respectively 27-) year-old as one of the main improvisers and writers for "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers" - both in studio recordings and rare livesessions, most of which are out-of-print today.

Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1956 "Hot Cargo" finds Miss Anderson with a host of top notch Swedish jazz men. She had been regularly touring in Sweden, steadily building a reputation for herself when she was asked to record her own album. The result is before you and to quote from the original liner notes "In these sides Ernestine Anderson certainly shows definite promise in becoming one of the greats in the girl singer field. Everyone interested in the vocal side of jazz should watch her future with keen interest". Ernestine Anderson is one of those unique talents in music whom you hear for a long time before you actually encounter them in person". Well our next encounter with Miss Anderson is "A Toast of the Nation's Critics", a fine album featuring the composing talents of such great writers as Mel Torme, Pete Rogolo, Kurt Weill & George Gershwin, Wild Bill Davis, Gigi Gryce & Jon Hendricks and Truman Capote & Harold Arlen. Not bad company to encounter! "This, as the title indicates, is "My Kinda Swing", Ernestine Anderson's kinda swing. It's the point of view of a mature singer, approaching a string of meaningful songs with the aide of a respected group of seasoned musicians and one of the best composer-arrangers... as a showcase it is Ernestine's show. She emerges as a vividly communicative vocalist, aware of the meaning of lyrics and the rhythms that propel them. Like love, she's here to stay". We all like a good moan now and again, but for our final Ernestine Anderson album, we have chosen the classic "Moanin' Moanin' Moanin'" That's a lot of moanin' for one lady but hey, she makes moanin' sound so good! Born in Virginia in 1918, George Sylvester "Red" Callender made his first recording at the age of 19 with the Louis Armstrong All Stars. Quite a start for a young teenager who would go on to have a remarkable career playing bass and tuba (which he had started playing at the age of 12), both in bands and as the go to session bass player. In the early '40's he played with the likes of Lester Young, Nat King Cole (featured here on our selection "King Cole Trio"), Errol Garner, Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon. On another of our featured albums "Speaks Low", Red introduced the tuba to the jazz world and became known as one of the foremost exponents of the instrument in iazz. Other greats he played with during his career include Art Tatum, Benny Goodman, Billy Eckstine and Charles Mingus and at one point he even turned down a chance to play in the Duke Ellington band, although he did go on to chart success as one of B Bumble and the Stingers!!

I have lost count of how many times I have been asked by young enthusiastic sales staff, „where does Ray Charles go??“ Well, what‘s the answer? It could be gospel, blues, boogie woogie, jazz, r“n“b, soul, country, pop or God forbid even easy listening! He‘s covered them all at some time in his long and distinguished career. We usually ended up popping Brother Ray in the soul section, but unquestionably his influence across all musical genres was absolutely unsurpassed. We have covered a few of those genres in our first „Classic Albums“ tribute to Ray Charles. From the blues of „The Genius Plays The Blues“, to the jazz of „Genius After Hours“ and „Genius+Soul=Jazz“ and on to the almost pop crossover album „The Genius Hits The Road“ which produced one of his greatest moments and greatest hits in „Georgia On My Mind“.

Unfairly compartmentalised with the many „easy listening" female artists of the 1950's, Frances Faye had in fact started her singing career at the age of 15 way back in the 1930's. She had spent many years singing and playing piano on stage and in night clubs, writing much of her own material and even composing a song for the Andrews Sisters! She is perhaps best remembered for her outrageous night club routines which contained large slices of sexual innuendo which was to influence the likes of Bette Midler many years later. Moving from Capitol Records to Bethlehem her material became less commercial but more interesting to the jazz listener! She made her last significant album in 1964 but continued her stage work until way into the 1980's.

By 20, he was in New York playing with Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Quincy Jones. At 22 he had made his first album for Blue Note which opens our set, „Open Sesame“! He would go on to make another seven albums for the label. During the late 1950‘s and 60‘s, in fact, Freddie Hubbard was considered to be, the „go to“ trumpet player on the scene! The list of great players he has worked with includes just about anyone who was anyone at the time... Tina Brooks, McCoy Tyner, Hank Mobley, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Reginald Workman, James Spaulding, Art Davis, Elvin Jones, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane... With those two latter names Hubbard ventured as far into the avant-garde, free jazz world as he ever would, preferring to stay within his own pre-bop, hard-bop and post-bop boundaries.

„Flute Souffle“; „Flute Flight“; „Flute, Brass, Vibes and Percussion“ and „At The Village Gate“

Born into a showbiz family, both his parents were singers and dancers, Herbie Mann began his musical career playing the clarinet in the Catskills, like a good Jewish American boy should! It wasn‘t long before he succumbed to the lure of jazz music and was soon playing bass clarinet, tenor sax and the instrument he would become synonymous with, the flute.

Starting out as a mostly traditional be-bopper with the likes of Phil Woods, Herbie‘s career would take him musically around the world from the latin rhythms of samba and bossa nova to reggae and much later even the dreaded disco. But rest assured we have primarily stayed with Herbie‘s more straight ahead jazz style where here we feature two albums with Herbie teamed up with famed Belgian flutist Bobby Jaspar. We then head to South America for some percussive latin grooves before hitting the clubs for a scintillating night at the Village Gate.

"This is clear, forward thinking, emotional jazz, played by a quartet of unusual emotional empathy, and technical ability". So writes Creed Taylor in his original liner notes to "East Coast Jazz". McKusick is joined by Osie Johnson on bass, Milt Hinton on drums and "Hal's brainchild" Barry Galbraith on guitar acting as a brass or reed section". "This was a most enjoyable and enlightening recording session. I sincerely hope that this will bring easy listening to you". So concludes Hal himself at the end of his contribution to the liner notes. We think "easy listening" is rather a misnomer here, highly enjoyable and challenging listening is how we would prefer to call it! For "Featuring Art Farmer" Hal is joined by legendary trumpeter Art Farmer together with Eddie Costa on piano, Milt Hinton on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. Here's a revealing quote from the original liner notes "interplay... It is the special attraction of the set; this swingingly relaxed conversational feel evident throughout that adds charm and a little extra freedom for expression". We are now in the "Twentieth Century Drawing Room" with the Hal McKusick Octet. New experiments in jazz where "the twentieth century meets the drawing room more than half way". Interesting instrumentation where jazz in the form of saxophones, trumpets, guitars and clarinets meet classical in the form of a group of cellos. "Triple Exposure" features the Hal McKusik Quintet, Hal on alto, tenor and clarinet, Billy Byers on trombone, Eddie Costa on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD Second Set release from Hank Mobley, complete with original artwork and liner notes. „Peckin‘ Time“; „Soul Station“; „Roll Call!“ and „Workout“ For our Second Set from Hank Mobley we have chosen four albums from the heart of his classic Blue Note period from the late 1950‘s to the early 1960‘s. On these fine albums, which include what many consider to be his best albums „Roll Call“ and „Workout“ you will hear Mobley alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the era, many of whom have their own classic Blue Note catalogue‘s to enjoy. Step forward Lee Morgan, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Wynton Kelly, Freddie Hubbard, Grant Green and „Philly“ Joe Jones. Although definitely a product of the hard bop school of jazz, Mobley‘s more lyrical and bluesier style has left him perhaps unfairly in the shadow of the great John Coltrane, whose career was powering alongside his at the same time. Maybe not as powerfully improvisational as Trane, Hank Mobley was however a great melodic player and an acknowledged fine jazz composer and his place amongst the jazz greats is absolutely secure!

"With so much emphasis being placed on formats in today's music market, it's exhilarating to find musicians such as these who are not fearful of experiment. The writing and playing on this date may one day form the groundwork for wider jazz appreciation, and a clearer definition of the term "commercial" music". The Trio consists of Paich on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. For "The Broadway Bit" the original liner notes tell us "In this soulful set Marty Paich swings Broadway's best, playing extended modern stylings of choice tunes from some great Broadway musicals". "In the eight years since his graduation, the Paich sound has become famous in musical circles as the solidly based clean New Sound of good modern jazz." Musicians involved include Marty Paich on piano, Art Pepper on alto sax, Jimmy Guiffre on baritone sax and clarinet, Bill Perkins on tenor sax, Victor Feldman on vibes, Scott Le Faro on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. In "I Get A Boot Out Of You" "both the old and the bold find a home. The album's chock full of both; it's a triumph of sound and technique for Marty. When first approached by Warner Bros. Records to do this album, Paich outlined this plan, a collection of memorable swing classics done by men fine enough to give them lasting memorability. The nod was yes and this treasure was born". Paich band mates include Art Pepper and Bill Perkins on saxes, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Russ Freeman on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass and ever faithful Mel Lewis on drums. All four albums have been digitally re-mastered.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Art Blakey complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
"Moanin'"; "Mosaic"; "The Big Beat" and "A Night In Tunisia"
To blues and rock fans Art Blakey was the John Mayall of the jazz world! His 35 year association with his Jazz Messengers being the same kind of training ground for jazz musicians that Eric Clapton and Mick Taylor found with Mayall in the '60s. From Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Freddie Hubbard to Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and Wynton Marsalis and way beyond. Blakey started his long career back in the 1930s playing with Mary Lou Williams and touring with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. His early life is mired in mystery, myth and conjecture but what is for certain is that he was playing drums for the Billy Eckstine big band from 1944-47 where he met Dizzy, Miles, Bird, Dexter Gordon and Fats Navarro amongst others. Our selection takes us from the end of the hard bop era with the likes of Benny Golson and into a more modern period featuring a new breed of players like Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Freddie Hubbard and Curtis Fuller.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD release by Curtis Counce, complete with original artwork and liner notes.
Tedddy Charles-"Collaboration West"; "You Get More Bounce With Curtis Counce"; "Exploring The Future" and "Carl's Blues".
Perhaps not as widely known as some of his contemporary bassist's like Mingus (only last name required!), Red Callender, Oscar Pettiford, Art Davis, Ray Brown, Paul Chambers or Milt Hinton, our featured artist Curtis Counce was a very highly regarded bassist who played with amongst others Lester Young, Shelly Manne, Teddy Charles, Clifford Brown, Wardell Gray, Shorty Rogers and Stan Kenton as well as making his own albums. Three fine examples of which we feature here alongside Counce's excellent contribution to the Teddy Charles led album "Collaboration West".

Another busy guy, Jerome Richardson started plying the alto sax at the age of 8, and along the way managed to master the flute , piccolo, clarinet and , baritone and tenor sax by 1951. He was so busy playing in other people's bands and on sessions that he didn't get round to recording his own first album "Midnight Oil" until 1958. Artists he has played with include Lionel Hampton, Earl Jones, Oscar Pettiford, Hank Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico Hamilton, Gerry Mulligan and Buddy Collette.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Max Roach complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
"Quiet As It's Kept"; "Percussion Bitter Sweet"; "We Insist! Freedom Now Suite" and "It's Time"
Starting his musical career in 1942 when as an 18 year old he was asked to fill in for Sonny Greer in the Duke Ellington orchestra, Max Roach truly began his professional musical career a year later when he supported Coleman Hawkins in New York. As one of the pre-eminent be-bop drummers of the day, Max Roach has pretty much played with everyone from Miles and Dizzy to Bird and Monk and beyond. During the 1950s Roach hooked up with Clifford Brown and was making fine music with him until the tragic car accident that was to kill Brown and fellow musician Richie Powell (brother of Bud). Following this tragedy Roach formed the +4 unit and made the album which is our first selection, "Quiet As It's Kept" with the Turrentine brothers among the stellar cast. Our further three selections take perhaps a more challenging musical and political direction, but one which will amply reward those prepared to listen with open ears.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Nina Simone, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
"The Amazing Nina Simone"; "Nina Simone at Town Hall"; "Forbidden Fruit" and "Nina Simone At Newport'"
"Let the music speak for itself", they all cry. If only life were so simple! Imagine you walk into a record shop and everything is listed alphabetically. You would have to wade through a lot of stuff beginning with "s" before you got to Nina Simone. At least with a jazz section you know where you will find John Coltrane or Miles Davis. And so we get nearer to our problem, where do we file Nina Simone? Here is a fine artist whose background is essentially classical, gospel and blues and yet on our selections she is undoubtedly singing in the jazz mode. A bit like Ray Charles, we thought, crosses many genres! So jazz it is. Here we feature four of Nina's earliest albums in a mixture of studio and live recordings. Her style at this early stage was certainly more in the jazz idiom, based on her gospel and blues background before she moved closer to soul and even pop later in her career.

Image West Coast Jazz Vol. 2 Originalalben
Original albums by Chet Baker, André Previn, Jim Hall, Bud
Shank, John Lewis, Herb Geller, Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, Shelly
Manne, Hampton Hawes and many more......
Had Los Angeles developed to the capitol of the american music
industry as it became the centre of the movie business the course
of jazz history would have been a different one. But nevertheless
all jazz musicians of stature from the big apple passed through
LA for lenghty and important gigs and recording sessions in their
careers: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins,
Cannonball Adderley just to name a few.
In the forties and fifties LA was home to such legends as Dexter
Gordon, Chet Baker, André Previn, Jim Hall and Ray Brown who
are among the stars of „West Coast Jazz II“.
16 original albums demonstrate how diverse and vibrating the
different musical styles of LA musicians were, often featuring the
same key musicians who were at home in all of them. The pleasant
Californian weather, the steady studio jobs in the film industry
and the more relaxed life style favored musical expressions who
reflected this over all situation.
And it should be stated here for the connaisseur : the quality and
the depth of the recording sound of Contemporary Records where
many of the albums collected here were recorded was better than
anything produced on the East coast by independent labels like
Blue Note or Prestige.

Image I Love New York Jazz (10 CD)
New York City is the center and Mecca of modern, urban jazz, and has held this position since the 1940s. Arguably, the end of the fifties saw this scene at its peak, with a host of giants of this music working and playing in the city. This 10-CD-set begins with some of the best swing musicians from the Ellington band, including trumpeter Roy Eldridge and saxophonists Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges, undisputed as role models for musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Sonny Rollins, and all the others Bebop and Hardbop heroes.

Among the musicians who deliberately take up the roots of jazz were tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, who had learned his craft in Ray Charles’ school of Rhythm & Blues, and who can be heard here in equally great form in the modern environment of drummer legend Max Roach’s band and in a funky groove alongside Hammond-organ-star Jimmy Smith. Most of the masterpieces collected here represent this dichotomy: the saxophone duel of Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt, or those by Johnny Griffin and Eddie „Lockjaw“ Davis. Rollins can be heard in a more experimental surrounding with his own trio and orchestra, as well as the great baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, who brought us unprecedented hours of musical bliss with his Concert Jazz Band. This set of original albums also offers a few rare treasures: the trio of pianist Eddie Costa, the chamber music projects of Hal McKusick, as well as the Jazz Modes with saxophonist Charlie Rouse, who later joined Thelonious Monk’s group.

Image Drums - Milestones of Legends (10 CD)
When Jazz made the big step from dance music to Modern Jazz with all its different playing styles in the 1940s, its harmony and rhythm became more and more complex and it moved away from his „primitive“ origins. Interestingly, however, this sparked an interest in the African roots of the music, fueled of course by the new self-consciousness of African Americans after World War II. The drummer Art Blakey traveled to Africa in 1947 in order to become more familiar with African polyrhythms. He used all of these experiences for albums like „Holidays for Skins“, which kicks off this comprehensive overview of the great drummers of Modern Jazz. Guy Warren from Ghana was one of the pioneers of the fusion of African music with Jazz, which went on to influence many musicians in Africa as well as North America – from Fela Kuti to Duke Ellington. With his „Percussion Bittersweet“ Max Roach managed to create a wonderful work that confronts young avant-garde musicians such as Eric Dolphy with complex rhythms, enriching the mix with Abbey Lincoln’s new vocal accents. Two of the most important drummers of the „Swing into Bebop“-era cannot be left out: Gene Krupa and Jo Jones. Not least because of the successful drum battles at the popular Jazz At the Philharmonic concerts, encounters of the best drummers have always taken place for recording sessions as well, which fortunately presents all participants’ musical abilities. With Chico Hamilton, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Shelly Manne, and Dave Bailey, some of the best drummers of the time present themselves in small and medium-sized ensembles without pushing their instruments into the foreground. A very special album is „The Drum Suite“ by Manny Albam and Ernie Wilkins, who also wrote scores for the participating drummers. Feat. Art Blakey, Max Roach, Gene Krupa, Jo Jones, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Guy Warren, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Shelly Manne, Donald Byrd, Stanley Turrentine, Clark Terry, Eric Dolphy, Abbey Lincoln, Mal Waldron, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson.

Image Jazz (not just) for Kids
Jazz is not kid stuff . Or is it? The nineteen original albums on this
10-CD box present a never before seen compilation: timeless Jazz for the young at heart and their descendants. There are well over ten hours of jazz and "jazzy stuff" that will not only turn day care children into jazz fans, but will also give more mature music fans a lot of juvenile pleasure. With several rarities and at least six albums which are available for the first time beyond the vinyl LP, „Jazz (Not Just) For Kids" is not only the most extensive collection of "Jazz for beginners", but also a fascinating insight into the art of „early musical Jazz education" in the 50s and 60s .
Anything but childish, the selection of children's songs à la Jazz runs from highly entertaining radio plays and „historical introductions to the genre" to a „Jazz-Soul" album by then 12-year-old „Little" Stevie Wonder. The opener is by Nat „King" Cole with his trio and eight wonderfully swinging and humorous children's songs such as „Old McDonald Had A Farm"; after that, pianist Dave Brubeck dedicates his craft to his favorite Disney songs. Vocal-Jazz-maestro Jon Hendricks presents his „Evolution of the Blues Song" with guests such as Ben Webster, Pony Poindexter and Jimmy Witherspoon. No less instructive and entertaining is „The Story of Jazz", written and narrated by African-American writer Langston Hughes with audio examples by a.o. Bix Beiderbecke, Dizzy Gillespie or Duke Ellington. The latter is also represented with his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's „Nutcracker". There are also, as mentioned earlier, more „Introductions to Jazz", with a rare one by alto saxophonist
Cannonball Adderley, and a swinging version of the fairy tale „Ali
Baba and the 40 thieves" with Bing Crosby. Add wonderful albums by The „Brothers" Mitchell, two actual brothers named Red and Whitey Mitchell and the name related trumpeter Blue Mitchell, Oscar Peterson and Jimmy Rowles, the story „Rocket to the Moon" by Raymond Scott, the composer and arranger behind most Bugs Bunny- and Daffy Duck clips, a fun Dixieland production around classical themes by Pee Wee Hunt, completely mature and everfresh songs by Ella Fitzgerald (eg „Goody Goody") and some more adult versions of children's songs by Beatnik hipster Al „Jazzbo" Collins. And there is a whole CD of softly swinging lullabies by Dean Martin, including a beautiful rendition of the „Lullaby" by Brahms.

Image 10CD-BOX: The Best Big Bands
To the size it comes to light, the larger the band, the better the sound. This is true at least for the ever-increasing Venues in the 1920s, when the swing gained popularity. But how can you justify such powerful bands, at times, in which you can generate by reinforcing with small combos great sound? The answer is found in these 20 rare and digitally reprocessed albums, some of the best big bands of the 1950s. From classics by Count Basie or Duke Ellington and their interpretations by '' newcomer '' as Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie, on the cool sounds a la Marty Paich, Stan Kenton or Pete Rugolo, to advanced arrangements by Gil Evans, Bill Holman and George Russell. Diversity has never sounded so benign and so great.

Image Jazz goes Classical
* A comprehensive collection of the best “crossover” projects from Jazz to Classical music and vice versa
* 18 carefully selected originals albums, remastered and with complete recording info in this 10 CD Box
* Many of the albums appear here for the first time on CD

“Jazz is a big word, it covers a multitude of sounds”, said Leonard Bernstein on a record aptly called “What Is Jazz?”, which he recorded in 1956 for Columbia. Like many of his classical contemporaries, Bernstein was intrigued by the spirit of improvisation and innovations of Jazz. That the Jazz-world and its protagonists were just as interested in classical music, or at least various aspects of it, can be seen not only in the many interpretations of classical works by Jazz composers and players, from “Play Bach” to Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite”, but also in the concert-series “Jazz at the Philharmonics”, which presented Jazz in classical halls around the world, thereby raising its profile and appreciation.
The eighteen exceptional albums documented in this 10 CDbox-set predominantly show the love affair that Jazz, also known as “America‘s Classical music”, had with its European counterpart in the late 50s and early 60s – from “Third Stream” works, a Jazz-wise interpretation of modern composed music, to jazzy interpretations of classical masterpieces by Bach, Grieg, or Tchaikowsky. These prime examples of what happens when “Jazz Goes Classical” create a brave new world, where some of the most fabulous of melodies meet improvisations and interpretations by Jazz-greats like Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Giuffre, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, The Modern Jazz Quartet, and many more.
Included in this comprehensive collection, the very first of its kind, are many rarities. An album like John Benson Brooks’ “Alabama Concerto”, a fine feature for Cannonball Adderley and Art Farmer, is as hard to find as Gunther Schuller’s “Symphony for Brass and Percussion”, which features such soloists as Miles Davis or J.J. Johnson.

New York, NY - for more than a century, the club-land of the city that never sleeps has been the proving ground for Jazz musicians from the US and all over the world. Jazz, the most American art-form of all, may not have originated in the Big Apple, but it certainly lives and thrives there.
The carefully selected original albums in this 10-CD-set document prime examples of New York Jazz from one of its heydays in the be- and hardboppin’ 50s and 60s.
Featuring an A-list of leaders from Miles Davis via Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk or Cannonball Adderley to John Coltrane and some of their greatest albums, it also introduces long forgotten gems of “East Coast Jazz” from players like Charlie Rouse, Grant Green, Tony Fruscella, Zoot Sims, or Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

Image Female Jazz Singers - Milestones of Jazz Legends (
What defines a jazz singer? A question that has long stirred the minds of fans and critics. Regarding this, it does not hurt to consult an old master, who has experienced the development of jazz fi rsthand and was in close personal contact with the greats of this music: Nat Hentoff , Grand Seigneur among jazz authors. He names three key elements, which are equally true for instrumentalists: swing (as implicit and present as the heartbeat), feeling (which one cannot learn, because it expresses how profoundly one has dealt with himself and life), and the personal sound that comes from the fi rst two factors. If this is too abstract, you only have to experience the great artists on this CD box: twenty completely diff erent individualists who, apart from range of voice and other technical factors, have found their personal voice and can easily entice listeners into their cosmos. Aretha Franklin cannot be left out with a recording from her jazz beginnings, skills which are still outstanding today, as one could witness at the great jazz concert for Barack Obama at the White House in 2016, as well as these goddesses of jazz: Ella, Billie, Sarah and Dinah. But there is also a lot of room for musical diversity and the discovery of talents, which have not made a great career for themselves for a variety of reasons – or are even forgotten today. At second glance it is worthwhile to notice how completely diff erent and individual their interpretative approaches are by comparing the songs in the various versions assembled here, be it with one of the now classic jazz standards from the Great American songbook or the then completely new songs of Oscar Brown Jr., which are presented here in fantastic interpretations by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Sheila Jordan, and which became the soundtrack of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA of the Sixties.Accompanying these great singers are equally great instrumentalists, virtuosos like Cliff ord Brown (Sarah Vaughan), Milt Jackson and Max Roach (Dinah Washington), Stanley Turrentine and Wynton Kelly (Abbey Lincoln), Jay Jay Johnson and Herbie Mann (Chris Connor), Gerry Mulligan, Art Farmer and Chet Baker (Annie Ross), and the outstanding orchestral directors and arrangers Quincy Jones and Sy Oliver (Della Reese) and many others legends from this Golden Age of Jazz, which today can only be admired from a distance, by means of recordings.

Image 10CD-BOX: Just Squeeze Me
This 10 cd set contains Miles Davis' most beautiful ballads, for example: Bluing - The Serpent's Tooth - The Leap - Doxy - Green Haze - Swing Spring a. m. o.

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz from the mid-'40s to the early '90s, since he was in the thick of almost every important innovation and stylistic development in the music during that period, and he often led the way in those changes, both with his own performances and recordings and by choosing sidemen and collaborators who forged new directions. It can even be argued that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't there to push it forward.
