Georg Kulenkampff (* 1898 in Bremen, + 1948 in Schaffhausen) made music history, when he performed the premiere of Robert Schumann's violin concerto. Clara Schumann had put a one-hundred-year ban on the piece, as the composer's mental illness was supposedly apparent in this work. The great violinist Joseph Joachim, to whom the concert was dedicated, thought it difficult to play. It was only in 1937 that the first premiere in Berlin was made possible by an agreement with Schumann’s heirs. The conductor was Karl Böhm. As Kulenkampff and Böhm were under contract with competing companies, Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt took over the direction of the Berliner Philharmoniker for the recording. But also the German premiere of the Sibelius concert - under Furtwängler - and the premiere of the Flury concert are included in this 10-CD-documentation, which presents the first general overview on the art of this important German violinist. Kulenkampff died of virus encephalitis after an injection with a poorly disinfected syringe at not even fifty years of age.

Alfredo Campoli – regarded as the "singer" among violinists, as famous for his incomparably beautiful silver tone as for his technically brilliant interpretations. He himself said: "From the beginning I have been taught to play bel canto on the violin." In the 1950s, his world career began as a classical violinist, having been a sought after entertainer with his "Salonorchester” before the war. This compilation of 14 original albums from the years 1949 to 1962 contains outstanding recordings of concerts by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, as well as the violin concerto dedicated to Campoli by Bliss. In addition there are orchestral pieces such as Lalo’s "Sinfonie espagnole", "Gypsy Airs (Zigeunerweisen)" by Sarasate, Wieniawski's "Legends" or "Capriccioso" and "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens. Chamber music works by Paganini, Handel, Bach, Kreisler and Corelli round off this discographic treasure trove. In addition, this box contains exquisite bonus recordings, such as Paganini's "Concerto in One Movement" as well as the indispensable "Devil’s Trill Sonata" by Tartini in a recording from 1946.

Clifford Curzon, undoubtedly one of the most important English pianists of the 20th century, was born in London in 1907 and died there in 1982. Knighted by the Queen, he was lauded by critics as the greatest "Mozartian" of his time. Curzon’s recordings of the Schubert Impromptus, the "Trout Quintet" and the Symphonic Variations by César Franck, which are included in this 10-CD box, did set standards that are still valid today. Curzon made his debut under Henry Wood at London's Queen's Hall at the age of 16, and from 1928 on he completed his studies with Artur Schnabel in Berlin and with Nadia Boulanger and Wanda Landowska in Paris. He married Landowska’s student Lucille Wallace. After the early death of the singer Maria Cebotari and her husband Gustav Diessl, the couple adopted their two sons. Curzon was equally respected as a soloist and as a chamber musician. Outstanding documents of this can also be found in this box. Apparent in all of these recordings is something critics around the globe noted about Curzon: a piano tone, which “could unite clear contour and bright luminosity in an inimitable way”.

David Helfgott is one of the most exceptional artists of
our time. Through his musical talent, Helfgott gained
a scholarship at the Royal College of Music in London
and played concerts around the globe. In 1970, after
playing world-famous Royal Albert Hall, he suffered
a nervous breakdown and spent the following eleven
years in psychiatric clinics. Only after meeting his
future wife, Helfgott reconnected with his ‘inner
music’ and started playing the Piano again.
David Helfgott inspired director Scott Hicks to film
‘Shine’, which has later been awarded an OSCAR©
and tells the story of David’s Life.
This CD contains the Original Soundtrack of the
highly successful documentary ‘Hello I Am David!’,
the added DVD contains the concert, for which David
prepares in the documentary picture, plus bonus

Wilhelm Backhaus (1884 - 1969) was internationally recognized and
celebrated as an outstanding authority for classical-romantic piano
music. Just how well deserved this admiration is, can especially be
heard in the Beethoven-concerts and the Diabelli-variations, which are
included in this 10-CD-Box and regarded as „trend setting” by critics
until today. Early on, Backhaus had become a German pianist of world
renown. As a sixteen-year-old he gave his first concert in London.
In 1905 he won the coveted Anton Rubinstein Prize in Paris, pitted
against Klemperer and Bartok. His US debut in 1912 was followed by
tours across South America and Australia. Twenty-eight years later, he
returned to New York, a period which is also impressively documented
in this CD collection. As an interesting „encore“ for collectors, there are
also examples of rolls that Backhaus had recorded in the 1920s for use
in player pianos, which were often preferred to the gramophone back
then because of their superior sound quality.

Violin sonatas by Brahms have always enjoyed their place among the standards of the genre and are frequenty heard in many locations, though rarely in that one place where Brahms often spent time, and certainy not at all on the instrument he himself played there.

But it is precisely this that gives the present recording one of its especially interesting features: a recording made on the original Brahms grand piano in one of the places crucial to the composer's work. How often does the opportunity arise to hear a composition sounding essentially as the composer himself heard it? An incomparable listening experience.

Added to that, the two artists manage to lend a special attractiveness to the three-note motto „FAE" ( Frei aber einsam, free but yet lonely), which was the young Joseph Joachim's romantic maxim and which can be found in almost all the movements, spirited (in Dietrich's allegro), gently rocking (in Schumann's intermezzo) and stormy (in Schumann's finale).

The two sonatas op 120, sufficiently well-known as sonatas for clarinet (and in a widely-known arrangement for viola) and piano are a further special feature. That Brahms had himself produced an arrangement for violin and piano, was until recently a matter virtually lost in oblivion, although the intention had entered his mind immediately after publication of the original. Brahms showed a great deal of interest in this arrangement and introduced many exciting alterations, to the violin part's advantage, being convinced that the violin version would meet with success.

So a completely new view of these works in a completely new and „unheard of" sound.

The works of Jacques Offenbach - a man who was "French" by choice - were spirited, bold and full of witty ideas and none less than Rossini himself gave the composer the honorary title "Mozart of the Champs-Elysées". This compilation pays tribute to the man who "invented" operetta and unites a selection of his equally delightful and refined compositions - a veritable champagne glass full of overtures, spiritedly conducted by
brilliant stars of the baton like Herbert von Karajan, Robert Stolz, René Leibowitz and Ernest Ansermet. In addition this compilation features highlights from the great opera, The Tales Of Hoffmann, the operettas The Beautiful Helen and The Duchess Of Gerolstein, a complete recording of Orpheus In The Underworld as well as the sparkling ballet music Gaîte parisienne. The recordings made between 1948 and 1959 are complemented by
Arias and Couplets performed by great singers like Nicolai Gedda, Jussi Björling and Giacomo Lauri-Volpi. These special recordings were made between 1916 and 1958 and treat listeners to a generous taste of vocal art history.

He was the radiant rising star among Europe‘s violinists in the mid-20th century. His recordings were awarded the Grand Prix du Disque nine times. Christian Ferras, born in Nice on June 17, 1933, won first prizes at the Conservatoire, as well as during his continued studies in Paris. Further awards followed in other European competitions. In 1947 Ferras met the Romanian violinist and composer George Enescu, who was to become his mentor and whose knowledge and experience had already benefited
Yehudi Menuhin. But the rapid ascent to the world‘s peak of the violin elite and the strain associated with this overwhelmed the psyche of this sensitive virtuoso; depression and alcoholism forced Ferras to take a break. After this hiatus he made a few important new recordings with Herbert von Karajan. From 1975 on he also taught at the Paris Conservatory. On September 14,
1982, at only 49 years of age, Christian Ferras took his life in Paris.

Ten original albums from 1956 until 1961.

Arthur Grumiaux is undoubtedly one of the most important violinists of the 20th century. Coming from the famous Belgian violin-school, he was seen as a natural heir to Vieuxtemps, Ysaye, and César Thompson. His extreme musicality and his ability to express the deepest of emotions, his playing, which combined basic musical virtues in a unique manner, brought him the respect and admiration of musical colleagues.

This box presents ten original albums from 1956 until 1961, all of them exceptional recordings such as the ones of Beethoven’s violin sonatas with Clara Haskill, highlights in the interpretational history of the violin-literature. Just as legendary are the recordings of Bach’s sonatas and partitas, which earned Grumiaux the reputation of an excellent Bach-interpreter. The Mozart sonatas No. 40 & 42 as well as the concerts KV 216 & 219 from 1956 and 1961 respectively, the Brahms concert as well as works by Chausson, Lalo and Ravel round off the acoustic portrait of an artist, whose LP-recordings have a fi rm place in the “Must Have”- section. As a bonus, we have included Stravinsky’s D-major concert in a recording under the direction of Fricsay from 1951.

Monique Haas was exceptional among the piano virtuosos of her time. Born in Paris in 1909, where she also died in 1987, she combined charm and wit with straightforward formal objectivity. Her award-winning recordings of French repertoire as well as her Mozart recordings, which can be heard in this 10-CD collection,
demonstrate this impressively. Married to composer Marcel
Mihalovici, she was also open to contemporary works. Darius Milhaud dedicated his second piano sonata to her. Haas had won the first prize of the Paris Conservatoire at eighteen and went on to study with Rudolf Serkin, Robert Casadesus, and
George Enescu, whose chamber music partner she also became. She passed on her technical and artistic knowledge to new generations in numerous master classes and while teaching at the Paris Conservatory.

An abundance of talent initially made it hard to determine which direction the career of Lorin Maazel (1930 - 2014) would take. His family moved to the USA from France in 1932. Maazel was enthusiastic about the violin as a five-year-old, about the piano at seven, and found pleasure in conducting not much later. The first time he directed an orchestra was at the New York World Exposition at only nine years of age. Toscanini had him conduct his NBC orchestra in 1941. A few of the musicians waved lollipops. As „Little Maazel“ he was invited by almost all major orchestras in the States. At the age of fifteen he gave his debut as a solo-violinist, and while being employed as a violinist in the Pittsburgh symphony orchestra, he studied mathematics, philosophy, economics, and literature, and also Russian and French for his academic degree. A Fulbright scholarship brought him to Italy in the early 1950s. The beginning of an international career, which reads like the almanac of all the major orchestras and concert-metropolises in the world. Maazel became the „Maestro of the Universe“.

When Gioconda de Vito (1907 - 1994) left the podium for ever after a concert in Basel in 1961, she was regarded as the best violinist in Europe. For Yehudi Menuhin, she was a respected and equal partner, David Oistrakh had invited her to the jury of the first Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow, and Furtwangler spoke of her only with the utmost appreciation. He also accompanied her on the piano, when she, the strict Catholic, performed in Castel Gandolfo in 1953 at the request of Pope Pius XII. and later also at the Vatican. But at the age of 54, at the height of her fame, she ended her career, because she thought she could no longer fulfill her self-imposed and very high standards of quality. That is why the her radio- and studio-recordings are so small in number. Bach, Beethoven and, above all, Brahms, were central to her efforts, but she was also lovingly devoted to chamber music. All of her recorded works, including those with Menuhin and Furtwangler, are included on these ten CDs. They are mostly played on the famous „Tuscan“ Stradivari from 1690, which the Italian state had made available to her, and on a Gagliano from 1762. Thus, Gioconda de Vito will be remembered the way an English critic described her after a Mozart concerto with Rafael Kubelik: “(She) played in a way that you rarely hear in life ... the slow movement ... was almost heavenly.“

Born in 1926, American pianist Julius Katchen enjoyed an unprecedented world career. As an eleven-year-old, he sat on the podium as a soloist in Mozart‘s d minor concerto at the invitation of eugene Ormandy in new york. Later based in Paris, where he studied philosophy with a scholarship at the Sorbonne, he began a fast-paced career that quickly led him around the world. Le Figaro hailed him as a „singularly expressive poet on the piano“. Soon he was highly praised as a performer around the world, due to his technical brilliance, coupled with boldness, a seemingly endless range of timbres, and a superior musical understanding. Katchen is still regarded as an unsurpassed Brahms interpreter, and many of the other recordings presented here from 12 original albums from the years 1950 to 1961 are also among the highlights of record history – from Beethoven‘s diabelli variations via solo works by chopin, Schumann and Britten to concerts by Prokofi ev, tchaikovsky , Liszt, Rachmaninov, Bartók and others.

The pianist Moura Lympany, born in Cornwall, England, thoroughly shook up the worldwide piano-scene in the 1950s. Critics attested her elegance and wit, praised her poetic touch and the varied qualities of her pianist barometer, whose scale ranged from velvety charm to burning fireworks. Technically, she was equally brilliant and knew every trick in the book. She was regarded as a Rachmanino specialist and was audibly able to handle his sometimes hasardeuric compositions, which demand almost everything from the player. „I never was one for chichi phrasing or powdered rubatos“, is how she characterized her style. Listening to the 12 original albums from 1951 to 1961 it is easy to understand why she became a musical legend. These are outstanding examples from the history of recorded music, excellent specimens of her interpretive art, which enabled her to meet any and every challenge. In addition to the highly acclaimed recordings of Chopin‘s 24 Préludes as well as other compositions for piano solo and Khatchaturian‘s D major concert, there are her recordings of the Rachmaninov Préludes, his 3rd Piano Concerto and the 2nd Piano Concerto of Saint- Saëns (Martinon), all of which can always be found in the international listings of the best-ever-recordings of the respective repertoire.Bonus recordings with works by Brahms, Liszt, Litolff, Debussy, Chopin complete this acoustic portrait of this extraordinary artist.

More than two generations of young musicians have been introduced to the art of cello-playing by him, in cities like Berlin, Boston, Philadelphia, Tanglewood, Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Paris. He was an ideal partner to the great instrumentalists of his time: Heifetz, Milstein, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Rachmaninov, Bartok and many others. Gregor Piatigorsky (1903 - 1976) is a singular phenomenon among the cellists of the twentieth century as a person, pedagogue and musician. He experienced the Russian October Revolution as the fi rst cellist in the Moscow Bolshoi Orchestra. He came to Leipzig via Warsaw, where he studied with Julius Klengel, and went through hard times before becoming fi rst cellist under Furtwangler in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (1924-29). A rapid international career as a soloist begins. Bloch, Walton, Martinu, Rózsa, Castelnuovo-Tedesco compose for him. He also composes himself and writes numerous arrangements for his instrument. At one point in time his collection included a cello from the Armati workshop, a great Montgagnara from 1739 and two of the world‘s most valuable Stradivaris. Hungarian cellist János Starker is one of the greatest musical personalities of the 20th century. He was accepted at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music at the age of eleven, and was educated by teachers such as Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók and Ernst von Dohnányi. He had a superb technique, an exquisite tone, and his playing was as elegant as it was intense. This compilation of 12 original albums, released between 1957 and 1962, confirms all too clearly his standing as a virtuoso and artist. It also includes, of course, Bach‘s Cello suites - the first of a total of four recordings of these 6 solo compositions, a must have in any Celloaffine collection. Also included are Beethoven‘s Cello sonatas with the congenial pianist Gyorgy Sebok from 1959, as well as concerts by Dvorak, Brahms, Haydn, Boccherini and Schumann. The compilation is rounded off by the highly praised recital, a journey through music history of sorts, with Gerald Moore from 1958, as well as excursions into the Italian baroque music and the Spanish music of the 19th century. Bernstein and his New York Philharmonic Orchestra – Mahler
symphonies 3 and 4; Ravel’s Bolero; Sacre du Printemps;
Beethoven piano concertos 4 and 5.
They are absolute highlights of the concert repertoire. The
recordings collected together here from the years 1950 to 1962 are
regarded as among the best that the charismatic and phenomenally
versatile Leonard Bernstein made with his New York Philharmonic
Orchestra. Bernstein was one of the most impressive and most
competent of twentieth century musical personalities and many
of his interpretations have become yardsticks for later recordings.
Bernstein, associated with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra
for many years before he became their conductor-in-chief in 1958,
was able to draw all the stops to achieve the dramatic tension
and emotional depth in his soundscapes. Furthermore, the star
conductor was also largely responsible for the development of
an independent American musical culture, having composed
something like 50 compositions of his own, and provided significant
impulse for the American musical theatre. His symphony “The
Age of Anxiety” and “Symphonic Dances from ‘West Side Story’”
can be heard here in recordings of the very highest quality. The
recording of Charles Ives’ 2nd symphony, Dvorák’s “From the New
World”, Copland’s “Billy the Kid” and his Gershwin interpretations
recorded in 1958/59 have constantly been mentioned in the “bestever”
categories. Soloists engaged for these recordings include
Rudolf Serkin, Glenn Gould, Reri Grist, and Lukas Foss among
others.

Benjamin Britten is the most-often-performed British composer of the 20th and early 21st century. Born a hundred years ago in the English county of Suffolk, Britten is ranked alongside such great English names as Walton, Elgar and Delius for his symphonic and concertante writing, yet it is in the field of opera that he has gained exceptional standing, being numbered among the most important twentieth-century composers of stage works.

His first opera Peter Grimes was a sensational success and marked his international breakthrough as a composer. The present London recording of 1958, conducted by Britten himself, enjoys benchmark status and is regarded as a milestone in the history of the gramophone. Other works in first-rate recordings from the early Fifties to the present century, forming part of this tribute to Benjamin Britten, include the everpopular Ceremony of Carols, the Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, the song cycle Les Illuminations, the Sinfonia da Requiem, the Nocturne for tenor, seven obbligato instruments and strings, and the ballet music to The Prince of the Pagodas. Together with Britten's lifelong partner Peter Pears - here to be heard as the gifted interpreter of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin - this selection also presents Herbert von Karajan, the Vienna Boys' Choir, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Dennis Brain.

Millions of people all over the world know these tunes. But an awful lot of them don't know that they come from the inexhaustible store of "classical" music. Many of them have been turned into big hits like "Stranger in Paradise" (Polovtsian Dances) or "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" (Dance of the Hours) and football anthems like "Nessun dorma" (Puccini's Turandot). Others, like Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" or the bridal chorus from Wagner's "Lohengrin", enrich our marriage ceremonies. Yet others have entered the language with such phrases as "Wine, Women and Song" or "Pomp and Circumstance". They are all brought together on these 10 CDs in a wonderfully melodious reunion of more than 170 tunes, the accompaniment to our lives. Anyone who has fought shy of "the classics" up to now will discover hidden treasure here and become an enthusiastic fan.

With Maurice André, Claudio Arrau, Maria Callas, Mirella Freni, Nicolai Gedda, Ingeborg Hallstein, Herbert von Karajan, Mario Lanza, Nathan Milstein, Lucia Popp, Hermann Prey, Anneliese Rothenberger, Artur Rubinstein, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Georg Solti, Leopold Stokowski and many more.

This 10-CD set presents the legendary soprano Maria Callas performing duets with some of the greatest singers of her time. It features studio and live recordings that cover the period between 1949 and 1960.

Maria Callas's immensely expressive artistry was often increased when working in partnership with singers who, like Callas herself, were prepared to dedicate themselves totally to the role and to the feelings of the character being portrayed. The artists who appeared on stage or in the recording studio with Maria Callas for the recordings collected together here are without exception of extraordinary class and international repute. Many, such as Jon Vickers, Fiorenza Cossotto, and Piero Cappuccilli, were at the threshold of a glorious world career. For others, such as Giulietta Simionato, Alfredo Kraus, Cesare Valletti and Mario del Monaco, there were no joint record productions, so the live recordings included here are especially valuable documents. Centre-stage in the collection are duets with Franco Corelli, Tito Gobbi, Ettore Bastianini, Giuseppe de Stefano, Rolando Panerai and Richard Tucker.

Nielsen was court music director in Copenhagen and taught at the Royal Danish Conservatory. His works display strong counterpoint and polytonality as well as traditional melody shapes. Nielsen developed his own musical language, which sometimes borders on atonality, from the starting point of sixteenth and seventeenth century polyphony, Brahms' chamber music, Grieg's piano works and Svendsen's symphonic works. Carl Nielsen's six symphonies were to become particularly famous - and all six are to be found on this edition. In addition the compilation features orchestral works, various concertos, chamber and piano works as well as songs. The majority of the recordings have been based on the new Carl Nielsen Edition. Since 1994 Nielsen's works have been revised, not only in musicological terms but also in regards to performance practice - any obvious shortcomings have been removed or improved upon and the results can be assessed by listeners. Carl Nielsen's works are now to be enjoyed as they should be.

Image 10CD-BOX: Operas Part II (Complete Recordings)
This 10-CD set, released to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, is the second volume from Documents to feature Strauss's operas conducted by the great Karl Böhm. It includes complete recordings of Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Daphne, as well as selections from Salome, Arabella, and Capriccio. The casts feature many celebrated singers, including Lisa Della Casa, Irmgard Seefried, Rudolf Schock, Leonie Rysanek, Hans Hopf, Maria Reining and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

The artistic friendship between Richard Strauss and Karl Böhm is a very special chapter in the history of the interpretation of Strauss's works. Despite international successes, especially as a Mozart and Wagner conductor, the works of Richard Strauss were the focal point of Böhm's activity. He conducted 155 performances of Der Rosenkavalier, 104 of Elektra, 73 of Die Frau ohne Schatten and 89 of Ariadne auf Naxos. Strauss appreciated the respectful affection of the conductor, and dedicated his final opera Daphne to Böhm, who gave the premiere on 15 October 1938 at the Dresden Semper Opera.

Image 10CD-BOX: Anniversary Edition
Richard Strauss, world famous concert conductor, leading writer of programme symphonies, and one of the most signifi cant opera composers, created works that were epoch-making: masterly tone poems, trend-setting orchestra-accompanied lieder and extraordinarily successful operas that form part of the stock repertoire of international opera houses.

This musical tribute on the occasion of the composer's 150th birthday contains some of the epoch-making compositions from each genre of his output. Along with the Alpensinfonie, Till Eulenspiegel, Don Quixote, Ein Heldenleben ("A Hero's Life"), Also sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan, and Tod und Verklärung ("Death and Transfi guration") quieter sounds can be heard, among these the violin sonata op. 18 or the horn concerto No.2 . The conductors who attach their seal of quality to this compilation of Strauss interpretations are, inter alia, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, Clemens Krauss, Erich Kleiber, George Szell, Sir Georg Solti and Fritz Reiner.

In every case the recordings are special; there are unequivocally bench-mark discs among them and those which belong to the elite of all classical recordings ever produced, such as the complete Rosenkavalier (the legendary Karajan recording made in 195), an absolute highlight in recording history.

Also adding their musical congratulations are Friedrich Gulda, Dennis Brain, Peter Anders, Dietrich Fischer- Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Nicolai Gedda, Ljuba Welitsch, Christa Ludwig, Gerald Moore, Lisa della Casa.

Image My Chopin Favorites - Original Albums
Arthur Rubinstein was born in 1887 in the Polish town of Lodz,
and died in Geneva in 1982. He became the best-known pianist
of the 20th century. To a quite special degree his name is linked to
the piano works of his compatriot Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849).
The recordings collected together for these 10 CDs, among which
are reproductions of many original albums, assured Rubinstein
his place in the “Hall of Fame” of the greatest virtuosi of our
time. From his debut as thirteen- year-old in Berlin until his last
appearance in 1976 (!) in London he had given several thousand
concerts and made more than 700 recordings. “Rubinstein’s tone
never appears feeble, even in piano is has a full sound. His tone
has a base that allows power without sounding hard when forte.
These impressive tonal qualities come to the fore especially in his
interpretations of Chopin. Rubinstein’s unerring sense of rhythm
(for instance in the mazurkas), his skill in letting the piano ‘sing’
(the nocturnes are a good example), his unique gift, the ability
to marry feeling and awareness of form (clearly discernible in the
concertos, scherzi and ballades) – all of these lend his Chopin
interpretations a singular status.” (from Ingo Harden/Gregor
Wilmes: “Pianistenprofile”, Bärenreiter Verlag). The recordings in
this 10 CD collection afford the best proof of this.

Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, Henry Red Allen, Sidney Bechet a.o.

The initiations of Dixieland jazz origined about 1910 when white musicians imitated the New Orleans Jazz. Different to the New Orleans style, this "white music" is more subsumable and concertante. At the beginning of the 1930s those two styles mixed up in Chicago and New York so that it's difficult today to keep them apart from each other. These 10 cds contain a compilation of renowned black and white bands of both forms of expression.

Image 10CD-BOX: Complete Symphonies
The symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms stand in the front line of European music's cultural heritage. For this reason they are brought together for the first time in this combined CD edition. Also two of the greatest German conductors have left to posterity a documentation of their worldwide renown.

Until the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship, Otto Klemperer (1885-1973) was, with Fürtwängler and Erich Kleiber, one of the triumvirate of Berlin's musical life. Encouraged by Hans Pfitzner and Gustav Mahler he became at that time an important pathfinder for contemporary composers. Up to the end of World War II the USA offered him a new domicile. Following an operation on a brain tumour in 1939 he became partially paralysed and owing to accidents his walking was impaired. Nevertheless, after 1945 he began a close association with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London, to whose high points belong the live concert recordings collected together in this CD box of the 1960 guest performance in Vienna.

Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) began as an oboist and served for a time in the Gewandhaus orchestra, Leipzig (among others), before reaching the top position with the Staatskapelle, Dresden via Chemnitz and Weimar. He was regarded as an outstanding opera conductor by the Bavarian State Opera, the Bayreuth festival and the opera houses in New York and London. He followed Sir Thomas Beecham as conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London, and from 1965 to 1972 he undertook the artistic directorship of the Tonhalle orchestra, Zurich. The Munich Philharmonic chose him in 1967 as their general music director, a position Kempe held until 1976.

Image Milestones Of A Piano Legend (10 CD)
When Annie Fischer decided to severely limit her public performances after the death of her husband in 1968, her concerts achieved cult status with piano enthusiasts. Finally she had become one of the „Grande Dames“ among the small group of great female pianists of the 20th century. She had always been very self-critical when it came to her album-productions in the studio and the examples compiled in this 10-CD collection document the most audilicious results of this – especially as they are complemented by a few highly interesting live recordings. Annie Fischer, born in Budapest in 1914 and buried there in 1995, attracted attention via her talent early on, so much so that Ernst von Dohnányi took over a part of her education. She won the competition for the coveted Liszt Prize in 1933 as the youngest participant; it was the beginning of an international career. During the Second World War she emigrated to Sweden, but returned to Budapest in 1946, where her husband took over the management of the opera house, and from where Annie Fischer traveled to the musical metropolises of the world.

Image Milestones of a Legend (10 CD)
Among the major violin virtuosos of the 20th century, the Russian Leonid Kogan occupies an important place. After his debuts in the West, critics were overwhelmed and praised his „superhuman technique“, „the purity of his tone“, and marveled at the deep expressive power of his Bach interpretation; colleagues were
impressed, too, with Svjatoslaw Richter commenting “it doesn’t get better than this” on Kogan‘s ecstatic presentation of
Tchaikovsky‘s violin concerto. Among the ten original albums documented on this box are milestones of the violin literature, which also are outstanding recordings, including Paganini‘s violin concerto No. 1; Khachaturian‘s D Minor Concerto in a fantastic recording under Monteux; Mozart‘s 3rd and Prokofiev‘s second
violin concertos, and of course the recordings of the concerts of Brahms and Tchaikovsky, the former under Kondrashin, the latter under the leadership of Constantin Silvestri. Bach‘s double concerto and the popular BWV 1042 and Beethoven‘s violin concerto are included alongside the groundbreaking interpretation of the „Archduke Trio“ with Mstislav Rostropovich and Emil Gilels, with whom Kogan formed a highly successful trio. Examples of
this fruitful chamber music collaboration are recordings of the
trio with works of Schumann, Mozart and Haydn. Many other discographic treasures of concert- and chamber music, such as Lalos Symphonie Espagnole or the Brahms sonatas, can be found among these recordings from the years 1950 to 1959.

Bonus tracks include, among others, the 1958 live recordings of Mozart‘s violin concerto No. 3 (with the New York Philharmonic under Mitropoulos) and Brahms‘ op. 77 with Monteux directing the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.

Image 10CD-BOX: Revolutionary and Virtuoso
Franz Liszt was without doubt one of the most colorful musician personalities of his day. As an instrumental virtuoso celebrated throughout all of Europe-only to be compared with Paganini - Liszt fundamentally revolutionized piano playing techniques and as such became the founding father of modern piano playing.
This comprehensive compilation of Liszt's works features a whole series of top-class pianists - including Wladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Alfred Brendel, Claudio Arrau and György Cziffra. The recordings were made between 1932 and 1994 and as such provide an interesting insight into the interpretation history of the works. World-class orchestras like the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the "Wiener Symphoniker" and the Philharmonic Orchestra present the Hungarian composer's orchestral works. In addition to both "Piano Concertos" and symphonic poems like Tasso and "Les Préludes", the "Faust Symphony" - one of the most important symphonic works of the nineteenth century - can also be enjoyed on this compilation.

Image 10CD-BOX: Wien - Musical Souvenir from Vienna
Here is a musical walking-tour of the city on the Danube, in opulence unlike anything so far seen - with a visit to a typical wine tavern and an open landau trip included. It will conjure up memories in sound for all who have ever visited this beautiful city, wandered along the Ring and Kärntner Straße, passed the Hofburg and the Staatsoper, perhaps made an excursion to Schloss Schönbrunn, and ended the day afterwards enjoying the atmosphere of a wine tavern in Grinzing. You will be accompanied by melodies that remain for ever associated with Vienna. The Radetzky March and the Schöne blaue Donau played by the Vienna Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan, belong here just as do the Fiakerlied (Landau song) with Paul Hörbiger, Die Reblaus (Vine fretter) with Hans Moser and - not to forget - Robert Stolz, the last of the great composers of Viennese waltzes that were heard the world over.

Of course Peter Alexander is here, Erich Kunz of the Staatsoper, Peter Minich of the Volksoper, and Renate Holm of both; the Vienna Boys Choir, the Original Hoch- und Deutschmeister (traditional Viennese Regimental band), Anton Karas with his zither, playing the well-known film music from "The Third Man", and other originals such as Hermann Leopoldi, Heinz Conrads, Fritz Jellinek and Luzzi Baierl. In addition there are guests who were frequently and eagerly heard in Vienna such as Ingeborg Hallstein, Rudolf Schock, Fritz Wunderlich, Hermann Prey and many, many others. Vienna and music simply belong together, and the melodies on these 10CDs are the best evidence of that.

Together with Alfred Brendel, Friedrich Gulda and Paul
Badura-Skoda Jörg Demus is ranked among the stars of
a line-up of famous Viennese pianists. He was tutored and
influenced by such pianist legends as Yves Nat, Wilhelm
Kempff, Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer. He made a
name for himself as one of Fischer-Dieskau’s congenial
accompanists, also as an outstanding interpreter of
Schumann’s works. He belongs to the first generation
of pianists who seriously put their minds to historicallyinformed
performance practice. Alongside the classical
Viennese and Romantic repertoires he had a strong
affinity to baroque music. The present recordings from
1974 substantiate his devotion to the works of Bach, the
great baroque master.
The “Goldberg Variations” belong to Bach’s absolute
masterworks. At the time of their composition they
towered over anything preceding them and they are
still unquestionably one of the greatest variation cycles
in musical history. In writing his “Six Partitas” Bach
wanted to create “keyboard exercises” that would be
used for the amusement of amateurs and lay persons
and prepare them for the challenges of more demanding
works. Demus, noted equally for his superb technique
and sensitive playing, delivers virtuoso interpretations of
these milestones in piano literature.

Image 8CD-BOX: Karajan - Verdi
Echoes of the "King of the classics" or "European general music director" as Herbert von Karajan liked to be styled are still distinctly discernible in Verdi's bicentenary year 2013. His name still retains a certain glamour, and is known even beyond the circle of classic fans. Karajan, the star of the rostrum, as well as having outstanding technical capabilities possessed a special charisma and was surrounded by the aura of success.

"He is the best Verdi conductor I ever heard live" is how the renowned music critic Joachim Kaiser put it. The ideal Verdi conductor needs subtlety as much as spirit, soul and fire, sensitivity to sound colours and an exceptional feeling for the dramatic. Karajan could offer all this. As well as his legendary and authoritative craftsmanship and a strong sense of perfectionism, Karajan's conducting style showed an enormous intensity, a fiery brilliance that bordered on the ecstatic.

The present Verdi recordings dating from the nineteen-fifties in Salzburg, Milan, Vienna and London, are evidence of a musician who represents the Verdi conductor par excellence: Verdi's Requiem, to which Karajan was particularly attracted, and three highlights of operatic history, Aida, Il Trovatore and Falstaff.

It is said that Karajan had a special gift for choosing singers, and judging by the outstanding achievements of these ensembles there is much truth in that. Included in the line-up that Karajan assembled for these recordings are: Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Carlo Bergonzi, Giuletta Simionato, Tito Gobbi and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

"Who's afraid of contemporary music?" This is a question few
would associate with Arvo Pärt. On the contrary, Pärt is one of
the best-loved and most frequently performed contemporary
composers and enjoys a listening public that extends far
beyond the circle of classical music fans. This huge popularity
across a wide spectrum of society could be taken to indicate
there is a void that his music has to fill.
In 2014 Arvo Pärt
received the world's most prestigious and valuable artistic
prize. The Praemium Imperiale, awarded since 1989 by the
house of the Japanese Emperor is regarded unofficially as the
"Nobel prize for music". Arvo Pärt's avowed admirers come
from almost all branches of music; the Icelandic singer Björk
is one, Gidon Kremer another, and Keith Jarrett, R.E.M. and
Rufus Wainwright. Pärt while appreciating stillness is by no
means one of the silent majority, dedicating works to such
personalities as the Russian dissident Mikhail Khodorkovsky
and the murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
Settings of Latin liturgical texts form a series of important
works, one of which, the Te Deum written in 1985/1992 which
can be heard here, was recorded in 2002 by the Copenhagen
Akademisk Kor and Orkester under the direction of Nenia
Zenana. Pärt makes use of archaic sounds and returns to
Gregorian and Renaissance forms in his work, but manages
to create something completely new and individual - the
old, familiar and modern in one. In keeping with that and as
a bonus to this recording of the Te Deum, some examples
of Gregorian plainchant have been added. The "sung word
of God" is performed here by the renowned Venetian Schola
Gregoriana 'Scriptoria', conducted by Nicola Bellinazzo. The
recording was made in 1999.

John Cage, Frank Zappa, Gary Numan, Genesis - they all have one thing in common: they revered Erik Satie, the French poet of the piano, and performed his works. The perhaps best-known piano pieces of this idiosyncratic composer are the Trois Gymnopédies which have for some considerable time been accepted into the sphere of music for advertising and ubiquitous background music (something Satie would have thought of as an accolade). According to legend Satie had introduced himself to the director of the famous Paris cabaret Le Chat Noir as a "gymnopedist". "What a splendid job", answered the future employer and engaged the notoriously impecunious musician as piano accompanist. Here is a choice of piano pieces such as Gnossiennes, Ogives and Sarabandes as well as the well-known ballet music to Parade. At its premiere under Ernst Ansermet it created a colossal scandal and simultaneously gave rise to the famous association of composers known as Les Six. Arrangements of piano pieces for symphony or chamber orchestra, choir, guitar, flute and dulcimer round off this portrait of the composer, with recordings from 1937 to 1996. In this tribute to Satie, his friend and contemporary Francis Poulenc as well as Leopold Stokowski, Igor Markevich, Ronan O'Hara and Jan Kaspersen, the Czech Chamber Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra can be heard performing.

This collection of songs in veneration of the Blessed Virgin is unique, containing over 100 works in which the praises of the Mother of God have been sung over the centuries.

It is more than sheer quantity that determines the worth of this unparalleled release, however, for it is distinguished by the impressive diversity and variety of its contents. The programme ranges from solo canticles with orchestral accompaniment to organ works in honour of Mary, from simple unaccompanied choral pieces through concertante works with larger forces up to the Marian Vespers of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber in all their Baroque glory. Gregorian chant, Marian songs, motets and masses, Magnificat settings, Offertorium and "Sacred Concerto" alternate to offer a collection rich in timbres and tone colours, satisfying all tastes and predilections.

It is at one and the same time a journey through the music of western Christendom, uniting a variety of top ensembles: vocal soloists, solo instrumentalists, vocalist ensembles, chamber choirs, boys' choirs, mixed choirs, instrumental groups, orchestras.

All in all a CD box without compare, true to its aspiration and appellation.

They are among the greatest virtuosos of the 20th century.
Four strings were enough to elicit sounds from their violins
that penetrate deeply into the souls of their listeners. The 10
CDs in this collection convey an impression of the art of these
instrumental geniuses in many standard-setting recordings.
The greatest composers have written masterpieces for the
violin, which are still among the highlights of our concert
life. Beethoven and Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Sibelius,
Mendelssohn, Mozart, Bach and the great magician on the
violin, Nicolo Paganini, are represented here with their work,
presented by artists whose names have become legendary
themselves. They are accompanied by conductors such
as Furtwängler, Maazel, Solti, Dorati, Beecham. It is not
an overstatement to call this 10-CD collection a unique
document.

The Blue Danube – no new year’s eve, no fine festivity and certainly

the undisputed king of the genre, the most important representative of a whole musical dynasty and one of the protagonists of the golden age of the „Viennese waltz“. He coined a style with his waltzes that raised him to the rank of an ambassador of musical Vienna. „Johann Strauss is the most lovable joy-giver among all

Many conductors of world fame contributed exuberant interpretations of this merry dance music.

These 10 original albums from the years 1952 to 1998, the pearls of Viennese waltz music, are gathered here, presented by conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Eugene Ormandy, Clemens Krauss, Ferenc Fricsay, Arthur Fiedler, Willi Boskovsky, Henry Krips - and not least Peter Guth, founder and director of the Vienna Strauss Festival Orchestra. Most of these recordings feature - how could it be otherwise - the Vienna Philharmonic;

One of the greatest French violonists of his time.

10 original albums from 1950 to 1959.

concertos by Paganini, Brahms, Mozart, Bach, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Max Bruch.

During his unusually long, successful, and quite undramatic career, the French violinist Zino Francescatti played in almost all important venues in the world and charmed audiences, critics and fellow musicians alike with its elegant, lyrical and sensuous playing beyond all virtuosity. The number of LP recordings of this virtuoso, who is in direct line with Paganini, however, is quite small. This compilation of ten original albums contains significant and rare recordings from the years 1950 to 1959. Of course, the recording of Paganini‘s first Violin Concerto released in 1953 is included here, supplemented with opus 61 by Camille Saint-Saëns. The collection also features equally indispensable recordings of Beethoven‘s repertoire (Violin Concerto, Kreutzer Sonata, among others), the Bach Partitas No. 2 & No. 3, concerts by Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Mozart, and Prokofiev, as well as bonus tracks. His partner on piano is Robert Casadesus, at the rostrum are congenial conductor personalities like Dimitri Mitropoulos, Eugene Ormandy, Bruno Walter, Jean Morel, and George Szell.

It is generally accepted that many of the greatest recordings of the legendary 20th century German conductor Otto Klemperer are taken from live performances, and on this 10-CD set he can be heard conducting many of the world's best orchestras of the time in some of these performances. Amongst the music here are major works by Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven, Bruckner, Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Mozart and Bach. The life of the great German conductor Otto Klemperer was marked with struggle and tragedy. He began his career working in Prague, Hamburg and Strasburg, before being appointed general music director at Cologne in 1920. Later, as a result of intense hostility and the threat of persecution because he was a Jew, Klemperer decided to leave Germany and move to America, where he conducted orchestras in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. During this time as a long-term consequence of a previous fall a complicated but necessary operation on his skull was carried out, the results of which were partial paralysis of his right side, neurasthenia and a lengthy period of disability. After the war he returned to Europe to continue his career in Budapest, but on his return he suffered another fall at Montreal airport. From then on he could conduct only when seated.

Anna Moffo:
The Beauty & The Voice
The Complete Early Performances

Her matchless beauty and spirited sense of drama - coupled with an exceptionally beautiful voice - took Anna Moffo (1932 - 2006) right to the top, bypassing the second-rank opera circuit, straight to the celebrity status of opera stars famed in Europe and the USA alike. She was enchanting to listen to and delightful to see in Mozart's operas and as Gilda in Rigoletto, Nanetta in Falstaff and Lucy in Lucia di Lammermoor, and she was irresistible as Violetta in La Traviata, the most successful of all her roles. Yet the fires of her own ambition, assiduously stoked by directors and theatre management, soon had her thirsting for parts that overtaxed her lithe young voice with its effortless coloratura. She paid the price, undergoing a serious vocal crisis. And yet Anna Moffo - who had studied the history of literature as well as music and had been a member of the Italian women's hockey team - bravely rebuilt her career. But the glory and glamour of the early years was never to return. The recordings in this 10-CD box were made in the first six years of her growing world fame, and they demonstrate the impressive musicality and vocal perfection that launched Anna Moffo on her career. They are among the finest of the many great performances that this exceptional artist has left us.

Image 10CD-BOX: The Worldstar Live on Stage
When Jussi Björling died - at the age of only 49 - on September 9th 1960 following a heart attack in his country house on the island Siaroe near Stockholm, the music world lost one of the most outstanding tenors of the 20th century. "Fire in ice" was how some described the timbre of this voice that started out at the Royal Opera, Stockholm then became a source of elation for the public in Vienna and Berlin, before the triumphant London début in Trovatore. Excerpts from this can be heard in the present 10-CD collection along with Björling's great appearances at the New York "Met", e.g. in Don Carlo, the newly appointed director Rudolf Bing's opening premiere, or in one of the most demanding of Verdi's tenor roles, that of Riccardo in Un Ballo in maschera ("A masked ball"). The singer's uniqueness in his greatest and most significant stage roles is highlighted in this collection of live recordings even more strongly than in the studio recordings. One could take Romeo et Juliette as an example. C.L. Osborne, the renowned U.S. critic, called Björling' s Romeo the vocally most perfect portrait of a romantic heroic tenor that is preserved on record. Especially interesting though are also the recordings of French and Italian operas that Björling made in Swedish, his mother tongue. The often rapturous applause that can be heard accompanying the stage appearances of the exceptional tenor Jussi Björling presented here will come as no surprise.

Image 15CD-BOX: The French Piano Legend
Among musicians there is a wicked saying that a juicy scandal counts more to help advance the career than a dozen good reviews. Perhaps that is the reason why an excellent pianist such as the Frenchman Yves Nat (1890- 1956) is known to a relatively small circle of music lovers. What is there to report about a person who had no interest at all in social glamour or self promotion for the sake of publicity, and instead devoted himself to piano-playing and composition? Even reputable music encyclopaedias offer little more than his dates of birth and death.

It was characteristic of Yves Nat the soloist to maintain a certain reserve without false modesty. There are no uncontrolled eruptions. On the contrary, the volume of sound is deliberately turned down and above all there is a power that lends discipline to his interpretations - and it is just this that also gives a tragic quality to them, and that even passionate outbursts are kept strictly in check. Already in his student days Yves Nat showed a preference for German piano music. On many occasions he included Beethoven piano sonatas in his recital programmes. He played Schubert, Schumann and Brahms - all of whom as composers were considered heavy, inelegant, and not particularly entertaining in the France of the 1920s. As his teacher Louis Diémer had prophesied: a brilliant virtuoso career would be unthinkable, at least in France, based on that kind of repertoire.

And in Germany? It would appear the Yves Nat was too cultivated and played with too little bravura to satisfy the current German taste. He unleashed too little titanic thunder, broke no piano strings, and there was not even any superficial virtuosity one might have delighted in. But for all that Yves Nat went to the heart of the matter in his interpretations. The sound does not simply flow past the ears. He succeeded, as scarcely any other did, in depicting moods and spinning out hidden melodic lines, without danger of the music coming to a standstill or its inner cohesion falling apart into a thousand fragments.

Image 10CD-BOX: Pianist of Divine Spirituality
Herbert von Karajan described the playing of Rumanian pianist Dinu Lipatti as follows:

"(...) it was no longer piano playing, but music that was absolutely free from gravity."

The admiration that musicians and music lovers still hold for Lipatti - even years after his premature death - borders on the worship usually reserved for saints. The exceptional pianist died of cancer at the early age of 33 but during the few years he was able to give concerts he made a number of important recordings.

The recordings on hand were made between 1937 and 1950 and give a good idea of his subtle and extraordinary art of interpretation. Several of these recordings are considered "recordings of a century" or have been labelled "unsurpassed" - including the Schumann Piano Concerto, the award-winning Chopin Waltzes and Johannes Brahms' Love Songs Waltzes for Four Hands recorded together with Nadia Boulanger. In addition this compilation contains all the pieces performed by Lipatti at his famous „last concert" in Besanç, where the severe illness had already left its mark on the pianist.

“During my life I have come across three geniuses: Clara
Haskil, Einstein and Winston Churchill.”
Charlie Chaplin, the author of this quotation, was one of
the many great admirers of this magical performer at the
piano, who became the idol of piano music lovers the world
over. According to the conductor Gustave Doret she was
“one of those extraordinarily gifted individuals whose very
being is filled with music, who has that wonderful instinct
for musical expression that can be achieved neither by
hard work nor by effort of will alone”. These 10 original
albums with bonus tracks dating from 1934 to 1960
constitute a fine documentation of the highly cultivated and
sensitive playing of an exceptional pianist. Her legendary
reputation as an interpreter of Mozart is in keeping with the
large proportion of excellent Mozart recordings. Further
highlights in the history of interpretation, here taken from
the violin repertoire, are the Beethoven sonatas that Haskil
and Arthur Grumiaux recorded (a selection). Concertos as
well as solo works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven,
Schubert, Schumann and Ravel can also be heard, and
taking part are several of her great contemporaries, such
as Igor Markevitch, Ernest Ansermet, Alceo Galliera, Géza

Southern Spain - the Alhambra, Sevilla, Aranjuez, Flamenco, fiery temperament, sun and bullfighting - many outstanding composers have fallen under the spell of this unique region which has been a source of inspiration and engendered world-famous pieces. Grenada's architectural monument to Moorish history has turned several artists into true "Alhambrophiles", among them well-known names such as Albéniz and Joaquín Turina but also the more recently discovered Emilio Serrano, Ruperto Chapi and Jésus de Monasterio. The great Francisco Tárrega contributed to the romanticisation of the Moorish past with his wonderful piece Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a veritable "earworm". Also interesting is the music and history of Enrique Granados's idée fixe, his fascination for the demimonde of the majos and majas in the Madrid court of Charles III, reflected in, among other works, his collection of tonadillas and Doce danzas españolas - which bring together music of the court and the people, outstandingly performed here by the Spanish Art Quartet.
It is well known that many French composers were inspired by the dances of southern Spain. Flanking the perhaps bestknown Bolero in musical history is a truly Spanish selection of compositions by French masters. It includes of course Bizet's "Carmen" suite, emotionally-charged and clearlystructured music that, as performed here in an arrangement for four guitars, evokes its origins more articulately than many other versions have done. This collection of guitar music of the highest quality captures the sunlight and melancholy of Spain as no other...

Dennis Brain was the most eminent horn-player in the history of recording and delighted Europe and the rest of the world with his tone, often described as out of this world. Scarcely any other horn-player had at his disposal this lightness and elegance and had such perfect mastery of his instrument. He shares the Olympian peak for brass instrumentalists along with Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Maurice André and Christian Lindberg, voted by international consensus the 20th century's five best. Brain's singing tone, his subtle and at the same time completely individual interpretational artistry have inspired composers to write for him. Benjamin Britten, Paul Hindemith, Michael Tippett, Gordon Jacob, Malcolm Arnold and many others have composed works for him and in 1958 Francis Poulenc offered a posthumous musical tribute with his "Elegy for Horn and Piano in memoriam Dennis Brain".

The present recordings give some indication of how Dennis Brain's playing was able to fascinate. As well as the horn concerto by Paul Hindemith, conducted by the composer himself, two concertos by Richard Strauss, Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, and a Beethoven sonata can be heard as well as a series of compositions by Mozart who had a soft spot for the horn. Perhaps the most famous recording of works for this instrument is the one made in London in 1953, unquestionably the benchmark recording of the four Mozart concertos. As a bonus, this compilation spanning the years 1946 to 1959 also includes a chamber work in which Brain's father Aubrey Brain can be heard playing together with Rudolf Serkin and Adolf Busch.
