Image Kokuma
Laughter, tragedy and triumph are only some of the ingredients of Gambari Band's fascinating debut album "Kokuma". This fantastic new group from Mali, West Africa, used to be more or less the Ngoni Ba behind Bassekou Kouyaté. Since parting ways with their uncle/cousin/brother in 2012, the nine piece ensemble has played with the likes of Brian Eno or Damon Albarn and his "Africa Express", and keeps wowing audiences every Saturday Night at Habib Koité's "Hotel Maya" in Bamako. Their distinct sound, at once earthy and graceful, uplifting and deep, wraps the plucked strings of the Ngoni - that ancient Malian lute of the Griots, played masterfully by the group's leader Oumar Barou Kouyaté - around beautiful vocal harmonies and an assortment of hip-shaking and head-nodding (poly)rhythms, like the "Gambari", which lends itself to the band's name. Mell Dettmer, who looks back on a deep discography of work with the likes of Eyvind Kang, Femi Kuti, Bill Frisell and Clinton Fearon, produced the album at studio Bogolan in Bamako - after the Coup d'état and the Tuareg Rebellion. "Recording went amazing", Dettmer remembers. "We recorded everything in six days - most of it live except the vocals with Kankou and Massaran Kouyate which we overdubbed later. All the performances really depended on Barou's solos. So if he didn't do a solo we liked we would just do another take. The band is really that great!" Back in the States Dettmer re-amped all the Ngoni's and rerecorded them like they sound at a live performance, before mixing and mastering the album at her studio in Seattle. The result is "Kokuma", Gambari band's debut for the European label Membran, and a true gem: the intricate layers of the voices, ngonis and percussion will draw you into the atmosphere of true ancient Malian griot culture and yet it is as vibrant and alive today as it was hundreds of years ago.

Image Ala Ta
Multi-talented Malian singer/songwriter Awa Sangho is a charismatic new solo star on the world music scene. After singing with Salif Keita, Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, Manu Dibango, Amadou & Mariam and the pioneering all-girl group Les Go De Koteba she co-founded, Awa left Bamako in 2011 to move to New York City to commit to her own creative life. The beautiful original songs on Ala Ta (The Truth Belongs to God), her masterful debut on Motéma Music, represent her "Afropolitan" experience of leaving Africa but never leaving it behind. Written and composed by Awa and produced by her life partner, the accomplished world-music musician, Daniel Moreno (Salif Keita, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Dr. Lonnie Smith), Ala Ta was recorded in Mali, Senegal, California and in New York City. The project features Awa on vocals, chorus and percussion, Mao Otayek (Tony Allen, Stevie Wonder) on vocals, guitar and bass guitar; and Moreno on percussion. Sung mostly in Bambara, the CD opens with the ethereal title track, an affirmation of living in faith that is beautifully shown on the video companion piece. For "Nangaraba," about a mischievous little girl, Awa adapted a traditional song she heard in her youth, lending it more of rock/ pop feel. "Bamounan" is a praise song dedicated to parents, especially mothers who carry their baby on their backs. "Somafolo," a sad, true story about Awa leaving the Ivory Coast and having to leave her young son with his father. The moving "Naigaikorosigui" closes the disc with its haunting meditation on the cultural tradition of cutting women's genitalia, a taboo subject Awa implores us to address.

Image 10CD-BOX: Tango, Tango, Tango!
While the Paris high-class salons raved over the Tango Argentino, celebrating its every facet to the full, the most sophisticated circles in Argentina turned up their noses. Here at society occasions tango music was definitely not on, it being popular in the bars and brothels of the suburbs and harbour quarter. This was no reason for singers to keep a discreetly low profile. On the contrary, as early as the twenties singers such as Rosita Quiroga and Azucena Maizani were able to find their feet in the men's world of tango and were regarded by not a few of their well-known colleagues as idols. They were followed by Mercedes Simone, Nelly Omar and Libertad Lamarque, the "Queen of Tango". As well as those already mentioned, this compilation presents many other outstanding artists in recordings made btween1926 and 1954: Ada Falcón, Tita Merello, Elsa Rivas, Cella Gámez and Nina Miranda.

Image 8CD-BOX: God of Tango, The
Volver - 'return' - is the title of one of the most famous tango
songs by Carlos Gardel and his 'poet laureate' Alberto Le
Pera. For Argentinians Gardel is still very much alive. They
say: "Gardel's singing becomes better every day." Carlos
Gardel was the king of tango, the most famous tango singer
the world has known and a legend even during his lifetime.
Carlos Gardel is viewed like a saint in his own country
and takes his place beside Diego Maradona and Evita
Perón as an Argentinian national celebrity. But not only in
that country. Throughout the world wherever the tango is
loved his name is spoken with the greatest admiration. He
contributed to that vast melting pot in the Rio de la Plata
area, where in 1900 the tango was born. Gardel recorded
more than 500 tango songs in the course of his career, some
of which were also composed by him. He made the music
of his own country an export hit, was cheered on concert
tours throughout Europe and America and Hollywood film
studios fell over one another to engage the charismatic
singer. Gardel became the personification of the tango and
dominated the tango scene in the twentieth century until his
tragic, accidental death in 1935.

Image 10CD-BOX: La Yumba - Greatest Tango Performers
"La Yumba" is a name to conjure with on the international tango scene. The legendary pianist, arranger, bandleader and composer Osvaldo Pugliese was the author of this tango, one of the most famous ever written. The onomatopoeic term stands at one and the same time for invitation, introduction and welcome, and is synonymous with a culture of music and dance that took the world by storm at the start of the 20th century. In the years before the First World War, Paris had succumbed to an early attack of tango fever. While the elegant salons of the French metropolis buzzed to the rhythm of the Tango Argentino, polite society in Argentina turned up its nose at the tango. Dances with tango music were definitely "not on", as they were held in the taverns and brothels of the suburbs and the harbour district. It was in the mid- Twenties that the capital cities of Europe were caught up by a second great wave of tango, once again centred on Paris. Where tango music was concerned, the cultural capital of the era was almost a European outpost of the Buenos Aires scene, where the upper crust now regarded the tango as fashionable. From its late-19th-century origins in the Rio de la Plata estuary, the Tango Argentino spread ever further afield. This compilation illustrates the development of the genre, from the "Golden Twenties" to the mid-Fifties, when Astor Piazzolla created the Tango nuevo. Recordings from 1927 to 1957 showcase the great names of the tango, including the "King of Tango", the world's most famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel; bandleaders and instrumentalists like Piazolla, Pugliese, de Carlo and Troilo; and female vocalists such as Libertad Lamarque and Nelly Omar.

Image Golden Afrique - Golden Era of African Pop Music (
This album provides a window on the golden age of African music, presenting the finest works created during the era of decolonisation when the Black Continent looked forward to a brighter future. In Volume 1 of Golden Afrique, we take a look at some West African countries: some of them (Mali, Guinea, and later Guinea-Bissau) tried a “socialist” path, while others, such as Senegal, Gambia and Ivory Coast, looked to the “capitalist” model. Today, at the end of 2004, we find that both these approaches have led to an economic impasse. Never-theless, both have produced outstanding artistic achievements. In Mali and Guinea, it was the youth clubs and cultural centres that provided modern western instruments, enabling the creation of a nationally unique blend of tradition and modernity. In Abidjan, Dakar and Banjul, it was the chance of earning a living by music that brought traditional musicians and modern instruments together. It went something like this: to earn a lot of money, you need to draw a big crowd, and when a big crowd starts dancing, all that can be heard of the traditional instruments is the drumming. And that, as they put it themselves, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, was the last thing they wanted to hear now that they had come to the big city. So the club owners bought electric guitars, amplifiers, saxophones, trumpets and horns, and employed musicians – both traditional local musicans and traveling modern musicians.

Image 10CD-BOX: Original Fado
Fado - even the word conjures up images black clad '' Fadistas '' Portugal brought about, playing music on instruments typical of this comforting music: Viola, Portuguese guitar, an acoustic bass guitar similar design, usually accompanied by accordion and violin, accompanied by the mournful song of a schwarzumhängten reincarnation of Amália da Piedade Rodrigues, the '' voice of Portugal ''. This centuries-old music, sometimes longing and plaintive, sometimes bittersweet and gentle - but always sentimental and melancholic - comes from the heart of the Portuguese people and tells many of their stories: everyday about love, about the big day a mighty Portugal, about bullfights, long past days and long deceased lover. These songs full '' saudade '' (desire) are all tinged with a certain sadness, typical of '' fatum ''. '' Fate '' is the Latin word for fate and is also the origin of the word Fado. The soul of the Portuguese people is captured in Fado, her belief that fate is something inevitable, something that can conquer the feelings over reason and leads to action full of passion and despair - a deep but beautiful sadness. All this is Fado - four letters that symbolize the soul of Portugal world; a powerful musical expression of the Portuguese.

Image Greece - Milestones Of Traditional Music
• Sounds like a vacation – an acoustic time-out full of the charme of the Greek islands and the romanticism of its ancient culture
• 10 CDs featuring icons of Hellas, from Mikis Theodorakis via Maria Farantouri to the Bouzouki Kings
“Music directly represents the passions of the soul“, as Aristotle once said. That this still holds true to the music and the artists of the great philosopher’s home country, is aptly demonstrated in this lovingly assembled set.
It presents icons of the Hellenic republic like Mikis Theodorakis, Maria Farantouri, or the Bouzouki Kings, thus presenting the whole range of folklore of a region so rich in tradition. With bouzouki, guitar, baglamas, accordion, violin, and many incredibly emotional singing voices these musicians and their highly modern productions entice the almost mythical atmosphere of the birthplace of Europe.
A wonderful sound-trip which, just as Aristotle said, directly represents the passions of the soul.

Image Heritage
Fans call him “The African Sting,” critics call him a pro, but
it’s his unique and electrifying style of connecting with his
audience that titles him what he really is—a true musician.
Richard Bona’s seemingly effortless voice, fierce skills on
the bass, unique songwriting/arranging expertise and ability
to learn just about any instrument simply from watching,
position him as a rare African artist to have established an
unscalable reputation on an international platform, which
has led to a host of awards, as well as fruitful collaborations
with colleagues like Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Joe
Zawinul, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, John
Legend and Stevie Wonder.
Originally from Cameroon, Bona remains true to his roots
on “Heritage”, his eighth album as a leader and the first one
with his Afro-Cuban band “Mandekan Cubano.” An energetic,
life-affirming and truly fantastic album, it explores the
alchemy of African rhythms in Cuba. This may seem ambitious,
but sounds as natural and effortless as anything
Richard Bona does; together with the Mandekan Cubano
(“five A-list veterans of the Latin music scene in New York”,
Downbeat), he has carefully crafted a fusion of sounds that
merge cultures together through their ability to speak the
universal language of music.
To support the release of the album, Richard Bona and
“Mandekan Cubano” will be touring in Europe in July and
November, playing both the North Sea Jazz and the Montreux
festival, in Asia in August, and in the US in September.

Image Calypso – Sounds Of The Caribbean Islands
When people hear of Calypso today, they just as likely think of the sea nymph in Greek mythology, as of the musical fad of the late 50s to which she lent her name. With his rise to superstardom, especially Harry Belafonte garnered the genre increased attention. In the music assembled in this collection one can easily hear that Belafonte „borrowed“ from many of the early performers and that some of his most successful titles had been popular a few years prior to his versions already.

In the early days Calypso was a medium of communication, spreading messages of all kinds - the daily newspaper of the little man in song. Many residents of the „Islands in the Sun“ took the contents of these songs, which often dealt with politics and topics of daily life – love, the adversities of fate, sex, lies, and alcohol –, as reliable message. The songs
created space for free expression. Over time the music was mostly consumed as pure entertainment, especially in the late 1950s.

This 10-CD BOX documents this „Folk music of the Caribbean“, which eventually gave rise to Ska and Reggae, from its origins via the highlights of the genre up to the decay of the Calypso boom.

Image American Folk - Milestones of Legends (10 CD)
The title says it all: this unique box of “American Folk” presents the debut albums by Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul & Mary, next to the first four LPs by Folk superstar Joan Baez, two LPs by the American Folkmusic-master Burl Ives, four LPs by the worldfamous Kingston Trio, as well as the first four albums by the

Of The Rising Sun“, „Lemon Tree“, „Where Have All The Flowers Gone“, or countrified songs like „Home On The Range“, „I Walk The Line“, „Wildwood Flower“, and „Cowboy‘s Dream“. A side-note: In case you are missing Woody Guthrie and Pete

dedicated to these two legends: Woody Guthrie - America‘s Folk
Idol No. 1 and Pete Seeger - America‘s Political Storyteller are still
available in stores.

Image Voodoo - Rare Ritual Sounds & Jazz Interpretations
All the musical Voodoo you need – original music of sacred rituals from Haiti and beyond, adapted Jazz-concept albums and the imagined mysteries of Exotica Forget the clichés about Voodoo and throw everything you know about it from films, books, and Pop-songs overboard before listening to the drums from Haiti, which form the most important ritual foundation for the Voodoo religion and its ceremonies. Voodoo was a syncretistic religion originating in West Africa originally, spreading via the slave trade across the Caribbean and Haiti to Louisiana in the Southern USA and South America. Merging with the European musical heritage, its rhythms formed the basis for many North American popmusical forms of the 20th century, such as jazz, blues, rhythm & blues, rock, funk and hip hop. In Haiti and some African states, Voodoo is a recognized state religion and is said to have 60 million followers today. Katherine Dunham (1909-2006) was an African-American pioneer who, as an anthropologist, dancer and choreographer, began travelling to Haiti in 1936 and intensively studied the music of the Caribbean; she probably also made the first recordings there, which were to be released in the US as early as 1946. The singer and dancer Emy De Pradines (born in Haiti in 1918) was the first to receive a recording contract in her home country. The original albums of master drummers like Ti Roro, Ti Marcel and Issa El Saieh demonstrate how this music developed in the 50s. In the United States, an Exotica-boom began in the mid-1950s, triggering a wide spectrum of recordings under the voodoo concept from jazz to easy listening. Hiding behind the alias Chaino the American drummer Leon Johnson (1927- 1999) made some recordings, which stayed rather close to the original rituals. Musically interesting are the Voodoo-productions with jazz musicians by Perez Prado, Shorty Rodgers, Don Ralke, Buddy Collette and, above all, Tito Puente. The last three CDs of this box set present the kings of Easy Listening, whose exotic soundtrack journeys into the world of Voodoo, comfortably enjoyed from the sofa of the futuristically furnished American middle-class apartment, a wellgroomed cocktail in hand, created a wonderful sound-wallpaper.
