Alessio Bax

Han har spelat in flera album på Signum Classics med standardrepertoar av Mozart, Bach, Brahms och Beethoven. ”The piano playing is of the highest calibre - Bax has picked out the tastiest bon-bons for you” (****, Pianist Magazine)

Alessio Bax, piano

Alessio Bax dedicates an album to his daughter Mila, compiling works from his past Signum albums - including performances with Lucille Chung and Southbank Sinfonia - as well as a new recording of the Nocturne from Grieg's 'Lyric Pieces'.

Alessio begins the album with a touching dedication:

"This album is not only a carefully curated playlist of soothing classics to calm a baby and perhaps make him or her fall asleep quicker. It is also a gift from parents to their children, with the hope that they will share music with their loved ones, not just to entertain them but also to enrich their lives. It is a gift from me to other parents, so that at the end of what might have been a challenging and difficult day, they might put their feet up and enjoy a seamless stream of great music spanning three centuries. And it is a little gift from me to my daughter that I hope will enable me, one day, to say thank you for everything she has done and will continue to do to for us and for this world."

”Classical Opera’s recording sticks to what Mozart intended for the opera” (4/5 The Guardian)

Classical Opera continue their series of the complete Mozart operas on Signum with Zaide - a new completion of Mozart's unfinished work by conductor Ian Page. Composed during his early 20's, Mozart began work on the opera in Salzburg but later left the work to compose Idomeneo, subsequently leaving no overture or third act. The opera is set in a totalitarian regime where a couple have fallen in love, incurring the jealous of the ruling sultan.

OPERA Magazine Disc of the Month

"A major reason for the success of the series to date is the strong sense of ensemble Ian Page creates among his singeres, with many of whom he works regularly...beautifully paced and sung, the ensemble is both directed and sung to near perfection."

Signum are proud to reissue Classical Opera's debut CD, 'The A-Z of Mozart Opera', selected for Gramophone magazine's annual Critic's Choice in 2007. "My personal pick for giving this year is the Classical Opera Company's glorious The A-Z of Mozart Opera, which is fresh, diverse, insightful and illuminating (everything that such recital anthologies usually fail to be). ... Cora Burggraaf
The Orchestra of Classical Opera
Ian Page, conductor

The first release in a new partnership between Classical Opera and Signum Records begins with Mozart's remarkable sacred singspiel Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots, composed when he was just eleven. The music is full of tender beauty, dynamism and descriptive flair, and the young composer's innate sense of understanding and sympathy for the human condition already shines through.

The story follows the efforts of The Spirit of Christianity (Andrew Kennedy) - aided by Divine Justice (Cora Burggraaf) and Divine Mercy (Sarah Fox) - to win back the heart of a Lapsed Christian (Allan Clayton) as he lies fast asleep. In opposition to this however stands The Spirit of Worldliness (Sophie Bevan), who urges the Christian to forget what The Spirit shows him and to follow her pleasure-seeking philosophies. As Justice and Mercy withdraw to observe, The Spirit of Christianity seeks to win back the lapsed Christian, but will this lost soul be able to resist the temptations of indulgence and short-term satisfaction that Worldliness offers?

The second disc in this 2CD Set is an Enhanced CD, with an exclusive 10-minute feature on the making of the recording additional libretto and programme note translations. Full German to English translations included in the booklet.

“An outstanding performance of the Adams Concerto, but it’s the addition of the beautifully played Harris Concerto which really makes this disc something special.” (Gramophone)

Tamsin Waley-Cohen continues her series of concerto recordings on this release with works by contrasting American composers. Already considered by many to be a mdoern classic, John Adams' Violin Concerto was described by the composer as having a "hypermelody", in which the soloist plays long phrases without stop for the uration of the piece. Although composed in 1949, the first performance of Roy Harris's Violin Concerto didn't occur until 1984. Since then it has been championed for it's "luminous orchestration and exalted tone."

”Fin balans mellan solist och orkester”

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 'The brilliant Julian Bliss continues to demonstrate his considerable talent by tackling the two greatest works in the repertoire for his instrument ... All the works collected here showcase the attractive qualities of Bliss's playing, rich and fruity in the showier passages, effortless in the demanding runs made by Nielsen in particular and, at the sublime moments, appropriately mellifluous and sonorous. A youthful addition to the many excellent versions of the Mozart already available, and a fine introduction to the Nielsen for those who are not familiar with it.' --John Suchet Classic FM, 15th September 2014 Julian Bliss performs the Clarinet Concertos of Mozart and Nielsen often thought of as the two greatest such works in the repertoire for the instrument and pinnacles of the clarinet repertoire, as twin examples of what can be achieved by composers who have been truly inspired to write for the clarinet, using its uniquely expressive qualities to produce enduring and comprehensively masterly compositions. Alongside these Julian Bliss presents two of his own clarinet arrangements of two Mozart arias, 'Der Liebe himmlisches Gefühl', K119 and 'Non che non sei capace', K419

Philharmonia Orchestra / Lorin Maazel

SYMPHONY NO. 7
Sometimes called 'Song of the Night', Mahler's Seventh Symphony is a journey from night to day. An opening movement
inspired by an evening boat ride on an alpine lake, two 'Nachtmusik' movements and a ghostly scherzo give the work its
nocturnal quality before sunlight emerges in its jubilant finale.

SYMPHONY NO. 8
Mahler's mightiest symphony, often known as 'The Symphony of a Thousand' calls for huge orchestral forces, eight
soloists, a boys' chorus and large mixed chorus. Described by the composer as his 'gift to the whole nation' it is an epic
drama in two parts, the first a setting of a Medieval Latin hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, and the second a setting of the final
scene of Goethe's Faust.

SYMPHONY NO. 9
An intensely personal work heard as both the ultimate farewell and a final homecoming. Leonard Bernstein said of
Mahler's last completed work "It is terrifying, and paralyzing, as the strands of sound disintegrate ... in ceasing, we lose it
all. But in letting go, we have gained everything."

This disc features performances by founder members Mary Bevan, Clara Mouriz, Allan Clayton, Marcus Farnsworth and Joseph Middleton.

Joseph Middleton writes to introduce the recording: "The moon has, since antiquity, inspired artists, musicians and wordsmiths. The programme on this disc looks to its many characteristics for inspiration. The songs are at turns consoling, sometimes seductive in serenades and occasionally paint the moon as a threatening force through its extinguishing of the sun's rays. The moon’s silver beams cast their magic in music by Brahms and Schumann in the first of these CDs, and in the second, inspire the exquisite treatment of 'Clair de lune' by a selection of the finest French song composers. Tenebrae / Nigel Short

Tenebrae will be launching this new programme of Brahms and Bruckner Motets in the exquisite surroundings and acoustic of St. James's Church, Spanish Place (Marylebone, London) on Thursday 12th November 2015. Profits from the sale of which will go towards Macmillan Cancer Support to aid their incredible work.
Andrew Mellor, who inspired this project, says, "I have worked with Tenebrae for some years now as a sound engineer/producer for their recordings and I've never failed to be astonished by their virtuosity and musicianship. I had always hoped that we would record the Brahms and Bruckner Motets, not only works that I love but pieces very suited to the Tenebrae sound. When my father passed away from cancer I wanted to honour his memory by creating something very special that would live on for thousands to enjoy, while at the same time raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support who do amazing work in supporting those living with cancer. The recording sessions were just as we had all hoped, and the concert in November to launch the album gives us all the chance to hear Tenebrae live in one of London's most beautiful churches."
In association with Classic FM and generously sponsored by Edition Peters Ltd., Tenebrae launched a 'Locus Iste' choir competition to perform with them in the concert. To be in with a chance of winning this once in a lifetime opportunity, choirs had to submit a simple audio recording of Bruckner's 'Locus Iste' to be judged by Tenebrae's Artistic Director, Nigel Short.
Nigel Short adds, "'Locus Iste' was probably the very first piece of music by Bruckner I sang when a choir boy and it was a favourite of the whole choir. Its beauty is in its simplicity and understatement and yet, within the short space of this 2 minute piece, Bruckner still manages to venture far and wide harmonically and dynamically, making it something of a little dynamo motet! We are excited to launch the disc together with a guest choir and I look forward to listening to the entries!" Hailed as "one of the country's most outstanding vocal ensembles" (Evening Standard), award-winning choir Tenebrae blends its passion for singing as if in a large cathedral choir with the breath-taking precision of a chamber ensemble. Tenebrae's ever-increasing discography has brought about discs for Signum, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, EMI Classics, LSO Live and Warner Classics, with the choir's recent recording of Russian Orthodox music being launched on its own label, Bene Arte, receiving glowing reviews and reaching number 1 on the UK Classical Chart.

Rameau wrote two complete 'Anacréons', both of them one-act acte de ballets, but with two different plots and librettos. 'Anacréon' (1754) was set to a libretto by Louis de Cahusac and had a successful premiere followed by some performances in Paris after the composer's death, and then fell into oblivion for almost 250 years. From fragmented manuscripts scattered through Paris's libraries, Dr Jonathan Williams has reconstructed the work, had his edition published by Bärenreiter, and now leads this world première recording, joined by a leading cast of soloists and the Orchestra and Choir of the Age of Enlightenment.

Image Inside Tracks: The Mix Tape
"The most fun part of my job is figuring out what to play live. There's an infinite choice of immense, immortal music and I always try and design concert programmes a bit like a setlist for the audience. For this compilation (of my personal recordings from the last six years) I wanted to carry on in that vein and so I've made it a mix tape - these are the pieces that come up in my head unwarranted at 4am to get me through another rotten night of insomnia. These are the ones that always give me hope and a reason to hang on in there - because if music like this can exist then there is simply no question that the good outweighs the bad. They are my inside tracks."

Three classic works by Thomas Ades, performed by the composer with the Calder Quartet - Piano Quintet, The Four Quartets and Arcadiana. These three works are not only in classic genres but themselves becoming classics, with Arcadiana as close as any modern quartet to joining the repertory.Ades wrote 'Arcadiana' in 1994 and gave it a favourite form, of several sound pictures, distinct and characterful, being drawn out of the same musical stuff, as if each were a different view through a kaleidoscope. 'Six of the seven titles', he has noted, 'evoke various vanished or vanishing 'idylls'. The odd-numbered are all aquatic, and would splice if played consecutively.' His 'Piano Quintet' of 2000 is in some ways quite different, not sectional and scenic but a continuous, abstract span. It is, however, as full of striking imagery as its predecessor, and sometimes of similar imagery: tightly worked cascades in the high treble, interlocked textures coming undone, a moment of repose, but now all engaged in the one unfolding process.'The Four Quarters' (2010) returns to the Arcadian model of brilliant evocation by means of tight construction, the central metaphor this time being the diurnal cycle.

Avant garde. Eccentric. A maniac. Wild and adventurous. Off the wall. Extraordinary. No marketing hyperbole - this is how the player of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment describe Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach and his music. One of the many children of JS Bach, CPE Bach always lived in his father's shadow, and now is an almost unknown figure at least beyond the classical cogniscenti. How can such an unknown be considered a gamechanger? A listen to his music reveals just why - it constantly shifts, wrongfooting the listener when they least expect it with wild changes of direction and colour - it is bright, effervescent, and is a fascinating link between the music of his father (and the Baroque era) and Joseph Haydn (and the Classical era).

A collection of new works for trumpet and orchestra by British composers Deborah Pritchard, Robert Saxton and John McCabe, performed by renowned trumpeter Simon Desbruslais with the Orchestra of the Swan under conductors Kenneth Woods and David Curtis.Skypace: 'My work draws its inspiration from the Skyspaces of the light artist James Turrell. His installations take the form of chambers or canopies with a large aperture above that enables the viewer to look at the sky, as if through a frame, and whilst the sun rises or sets lights are used inside the room to affect the viewer's perception. My piece is a reflection on the changing colours of both sky and chamber, and is divided into seven miniatures.' Deborah Pritchard.La Primavera: 'The Trumpet Concerto 'La Primavera' is so-called because the initial impulse for the piece came from considering two aspects of the coming of Spring: the exuberance and vitality of burgeoning new growth, and the flowering (literally!) of the new or refreshed life as it expands.' John McCabe.'The shape and sound of 'Psalm - A Song of Ascents' were in my mind long before the title, and when I began work on the score in September 1992 it became clear that the piece was not so much a concerto as a poem for solo trumpet and small orchestra .. The title which I decided on eventually refers to some of the later psalms which, in the King James version, are called Songs of Degrees and in the Revised Versions, Songs of Ascents. I interpreted this as a spiritual (rather than as a literal) ascent, and as I wished to exploit both the singing and the more agile, dancing aspects of the trumpet, the idea of a textless psalm seemed appropriate..[Shakespeare Scenes].. it seemed appropriate to pay tribute to Stratford-upon-Avon's greatest son. There are five pieces/movements whose tonal centres outline the musical letters of Shakespeare's name, so that the latter forms the structural basis of the whole.' Robert Saxton.

Image Lux Et Veritas
Two years after their previous Will Todd album, The Call of Wisdom, comes this lyrical new release from Nigel Short and Tenebrae. As the subtitle Music for Peace and Reflection suggests, the repertoire is largely gentle and meditative, but the atmosphere is far from monochrome. Indeed diversity is the watchword of this disc, in particular diversity of scoring (sometimes with orchestra, sometimes with organ, sometimes unaccompanied), diversity of text (some Biblical, some liturgical, some newly written) and diversity of expression (from the urgent entreaties of For Peace to the rapture of In This Place and the impassioned O Lux Beata). Several pieces hark back to Todd s North-Eastern origins: Christus Est Stella sets words by the Venerable Bede, Tidings evokes the mystery of Lindisfarne, In This Place is an adoration of Durham, and the haunting A Celtic Blessing taps into the same Northumbrian hinterland. Todd reveals himself, of course, as a composer of considerable melodic gifts, but also as a fine orchestrator: his lush scorings allow the English Chamber Orchestra strings to shimmer and soar, sometimes underpinned by rippling figurations from harp and piano. The harmonies are full of interest too; jazz inflections are there, as you would expect from the composer of the popular Mass in Blue, but several of the pieces, notably Tidings and Agnus Dei, explore more astringent colours. Tenebrae are on fine form, displaying in spades the effortless silkiness of tone for which they are renowned. This is certainly an album which will work well as soothing background, but it will also amply reward much closer attention. --Ralph WoodwardOne of this year's finest albums. --Classic FMJohn Suchet s Album of the Week Classic FM 'These are beautifully melodic and touching pieces for calm, reflective moments' (John Suchet - Classic FM Online, 29th September 2014)

A new album bringing classic carols to life under the expert direction of conductor and author Andrew Gant, coinciding with the release later this year of his new book 'Christmas Carols - From Village Green to Church Choir'. Everyone loves a carol - in the end, even Scrooge. They have the power to summon up a special kind of midwinter mood, like the aroma of mince pies and mulled wine and the twinkle of lights on a tree. It s a kind of magic. But how did they get that magic? In 'Christmas Carols' Andrew Gant tells the story of some 20 carols, each accompanied by lyrics and music, unravelling a captivating - and often surprising - tale of great musicians and thinkers, saints and pagans, shepherd boys, choirboys, monks and drunks. We delve into the history of such favourites as Good King Wenceslas , Away in a Manger and The Twelve Days of Christmas , discovering along the way how Hark, the Herald angels sing came to replace Hark, how all the welkin ring and how Ralph Vaughan Williams bolted the tune of an English folk song about a dead ox to a poem by a nineteenth-century American pilgrim to make O little town of Bethlehem . 'Christmas Carols' brims with anecdote, expert knowledge and Christmas spirit. It is a fittingly joyous account of one of our best-loved musical traditions.

In 'Piano Man', James plays the music of his favourite composers, including Bach, Beethoven and Chopin, many of whom had, like James, troubled lives. In this highly personal collection, James explains how they've given him solace in his darkest moments and why we should all be listening. With stunning solo piano performances and witty insight into these lives 'Piano Man' is an exciting and radical new approach.

Image 1917: Works for Violin and Piano
Rising-star violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen is joined by the eminent pianist-composer Huw Watkins in a diverse programme of works that were all influenced in different ways by the era in which they were composed. The works were concieved at four very different points in the composer's lives: Debussy, at the end of his life; Respighi in the first flush of fame; Elgar, although not old, enjoying his last creative period; and Sibelius in his prime, composing prolifically.

These four contrasting works were all composed as the Great War drew to a close, but none of them specifically attempts to conjure up images of the conflict, nor act as any kind of programmatic memorial to its victims. Rather, these works are all conceived as absolute music, albeit, in the case of the Elgar and Debussy sonatas, imbued with a melancholy regret that may have been a reflection of those tragic four years.

Reviews of the concert from which this recording was taken:

"John Tomlinson and Michelle DeYoung were vocally so commanding as to render "choreography" entirely superfluous. Tomlinson's cavernous voice seemed to embody the very interior world of his castle - its sadness, darkness, emptiness - his Hungarian so vivid and expressive in itself that it became another sonority in Barto?k's aural palette. He was quite extraordinary. Musically stunning ..." The Arts Desk

"The part of Judith was well taken by Michelle DeYoung but it was the portrayal of Tomlinson that stole the show. At first predatory and prowling - no one can prowl like John Tomlinson - he visibly collapsed into himself as his secrets were exposed. And never was that magnificently gnarled tone put to better use." The Evening Standard

With its vivid poetry and technical ingenuity, Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' was ground-breaking at the time of its composition and to this day remains as influential and transfixing as ever. In this recording, violinist Kati Debretzeni directs the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment based on the energetic, historically-informed performances given last February when, with renowned choreographer Henri Oguike, the OAE fused authentic performance with contemporary choreography.

The booklet includes a 'Guided tour of the Four Seasons', allowing listeners to follow the poetry that inspired Vivaldi as they hear the performances on the disc, including additional composer's notes from Vivaldi's own scores. Born in Transylvania, Kati Debretzeni studied with Ora Shiran and Baroque violin with Catherine Mackintosh and Walter Reiter at the Royal College of Music in London. Since the year 2000 she has led the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and since 2008 is one of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which she has directed and lead in the UK, Europe and the US. Kati features as soloist on two versions of Bach's Brandenburg concertos, with the European Brandenburg Ensemble under Trevor Pinnock (Gramophone Award, 2008), and again with the English Baroque Soloists. She has directed from the violin various ensembles in Israel, Poland, Norway, Iceland and the UK, and teaches the Baroque and Classical violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.

Coupling powerful interpretations with path-breaking scholarship, the choir Contrapunctus presents music by the best-known composers as well as unfamiliar masterpieces. Directed by Owen Rees, a specialist in music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the group presents imaginative programmes revealing previously undiscovered musical treasures and throwing new light on familiar works.

This recording explores the musical 'cries of the oppressed' from opposite ends of Europe, which include some of the most powerful works composed in England and Portugal during this period by Byrd, Tallis, Monte and Cardoso. The highlight perhaps is the first recording of a newly reconstructed vocal work by Thomas Tallis, Libera nos. This has long been thought to be an instrumental work, and has been recorded as such, but there's persuasive historical evidence for us to be confident that this is in fact a choral setting of the antiphon Libera nos, and it is performed here with the relevant text restored to the five vocal parts.

Few composers of any age have enjoyed the widespread admiration and unanimous praise of successive generations as Josquin Desprez. He is considered the greatest creator and innovator of musical composition during the Renaissance, and for some half a millennium his music has stood the test of time. He is remembered as much for his own works as for his lasting influence on those of his contemporaries and students, demonstrated in many of the compositions in tribute of 'the master' featured in this programme. The programme's centrepiece is Jean Richafort's Requiem mass (missa pro defunctis), a tribute that employs several of Josquin's compositional devices.

The King's Singers once again demonstrate their versatility and trademark precision in this new programme devised by leading early-music scholar and conductor David Skinner.

As part of the celebration Britten's Centenery in 2013, this new recording presents Britten's five Canticles, performed by tenor Ben Johnson with James Baillieu accompanying.

Ben Johnson describes his attraction to these works in his self-penned notes for the disc: "Each is deep with meaning or subversion, a trademark of Britten's music to a modern audience. In their very performance they glide through such variety of style that it makes them wonderfully difficult to categorise. They are song, opera, cantata and chamber music, and so they correspond with the most delicate of intimacy and to the most effective of grand gesture ... In his biography of Britten, Humphrey Carpenter points out the close links between the Canticles and Britten's operas. This answers in part their difference from the 'usual' song repertoire: their religious flavour (a stronger taste in some than others) mixed with the circumstances of their composition make for a unique strand in Britten's output."

One of the most versatile musicians of his generation, Richard Rodney Bennett was at the forefront of British musical life for nearly half a century. This new recording from the National Youth Choir of Scotland's National Girls Choir compiles a programme of Bennett's choral works from across his compositional life, as well as a collection of charming folk-tunes and nursery rhymes for piano duet (Over the Hills and Far Away).

This is Signum's second release with NYCoS, who in 2011 became the first youth arts organization to receive a Royal Philharmonic Society Award. It follows their 2010 debut release of Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols and Elizabeth Poston's An English Day-Book (SIGCD228): "This debut recording by Christopher Bell's NYCoS National Girls Choircould so easily have been just another recording of Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, but for two things: the wholesome confidence of the choir itself ... and, the successful partnering of Britten's masterpiece with Elizabeth Poston's edgy and colourful An English Day-Book."

Southbank Sinfonia
Simon Over, conductor

A stunning soloist follows on from his 2012 Brahms release with a new concerto recording of piano concertos K.491 and K.595 by Mozart, performed with the Southbank Sinfonia under Simon Over. The Italian-born pianist Alessio Bax is a first-prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions and a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient. This is his fourth recording with Signum.

Reviews for Alessio's recent disc of Brahms (SIGCD309): "... an all-Brahms recital that confirms what we auditors at last year's Menlo Concerts in Palo Alto (the "Through Brahms" experience) already knew: that Bax delivers a natural ethos in this composer's combination of romantic passion and classical architecture."

The Rodolfus Choir
Ralph Allwood, director

The Rodolfus Choir have established themselves as one of the leading youth choirs in Britain, made up of singers aged from 16 to 25 who have been chosen from past and present members of the Eton Choral Courses for prospective choral scholars. Many members of the Choir are choral scholars, some are at music college, and most hope to make a career in music. The Rodolfus Choir and Ralph Allwood are well-known for imaginative programming, and for presenting new music. The Rodolfus Choir's recent CD recordings with Signum include music as diverse as Howells, Monteverdi, Grier, Tallis and the German Romantics. Drawn from across the composer's lengthy career, this collection of Part-Songs and Choral Works explores the great variety and range within Elgar's work for choir and voices. Along with more well-known works such as Love and Deep in my Soul there are early pieces such as O Salutaris hostia (composed for small amateur choirs) that give hints of his later mature style, through to the 1928 piece I sing the Birth - a work that shows Elgar's ability to adapt to more contemporary styles of 20th-century choral composition.

David John Pike, baritone

Centred around Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, this collection of English song brings together three now influential figures in the world of British music - Vaughan Williams, his contemporary (in age rather than compositional approach) Roger Quilter, and the younger Gerald Finzi (whose work Let us Garlands Bring was composed to mark Vaughan Williams' 70th birthday). The texts used are drawn from a variety of source: from traditional 'Dorset' songs, through settings of Shakespere, to the central song-cycle of poetry by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Baritone David John Pike has a widely varied repertoire covering early music, oratorio, symphonic, opera and commissioned works. In his native Canada, in the UK and across Europe, he has worked with leading ensembles including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London Philharmonic and the Schweizerkammerchor under the direction of Christophers, Dutoit, Jurowski, Marriner, Mehta, Rattle and Zinman. He now has a growing reputation as an operatic and concert soloist.

Hideko Udagawa returns to disc on Signum with a new album of Russian Romantic music from Aram Khachaturian and Sergei Lyapunov.

The two composers represented here symbolize two entirely different eras in Russian music - Lyapunov from the end of the Romanov Empire and Khachaturian from the height of the Soviet Union - yet their works are perhaps more an expression of continuities, of perennial concerns for Russian composers, such as the need to integrate folkloric elements with the demands of sophisticated musical structures for concert performance, and adherence to the great Russian traditions of violin-playing that go back to the middle of the 19th century.

This recording presents works from two very different composers, both united through their mastery of orchestral colouring and evocative imagery: Khachaturian's Spartacus and Gayane suites are infused with enchanting Armenian influences, and enjoyed a deserved popularity with Russian audiences that helped protect him from the worst of widespread artistic suppression during the era. Following these, one of the jewels of orchestral repertoire, Ravel's Dahpnis et Chloé was composed for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes dance company and has remained a popular work to this day.

At the time of its first performances in 1846, Elijah was hailed as one of the great oratorios alongside Handel's Messiah. William Byrd, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, was a confirmed and practising Catholic who worshipped in defiance of the Queen. His status and perhaps even his life was preserved thanks partly to the undeniable mastery of his music, and to the fact that he was careful to maintain an output of music appropriate for a Protestant Rite (simple and English) as well as a Catholic one (florid and Latin).

Byrd was by no means the only major Catholic composer working in England during these years. Furthermore, there were English composers whose faith drove them to work abroad, as well as foreign composers who offered sympathy and encouragement to English Catholics. Included in this latter category was the Flemish composer Phillipe De Monte who entered into a fascinating compositional correspondence with Byrd. Verses of Psalm 136 'Super Flumina Babylonis' (containing many allegorical references to the plight of catholics unable to practice their faith openly) were set to music and exchanged, in what is now seen as an encoded message of mutual support and friendship between brothers in faith.

The texts reveal the Catholic community's sense of isolation: "How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?", Quomodo Cantabimus; and bereavement: "Jerusalem is wasted", Ne Irascaris, and the elaborate, poetic nature of the encoded messages distributed within it through music.

The early-music consort Gallicantus (led by former King's Singer Gabriel Crouch) is drawn from the ranks of recent BBC Music Magazine award-winning choir Tenebrae.

Image New Venetian Coronation 1595
The Gabrieli Consort and Players return to the programme that put them on the musical map when it was originally recorded and released in 1990: A Venetian Coronation 1595 is a musical re-creation evoking the grand pageantry of the Coronation Mass for Venetian Doge Marino Grimani. His love of ceremony and state festivals fuelled an extraordinary musical bounty during his reign and formed the background to the musical riches of the period, especially to the works of Giovanni Gabrieli. with cornetts, sackbuts and an all-male consort, Paul McCreesh fully exploits the dazzling polyphony of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli's music and captivates the audience in a theatrical and ceremonious performance.

Two decades later, the Gabrieli's New Venetian Coronation takes advantage of huge developments in early instruments, performance techniques and research into the pieces that were on the original (as well as advances in recording techniques).

Recreating the exciting sound of swing from the 30's and 40's, Julian Bliss's dynamic virtuosity leads his sextet through some of the great tunes of the swing era, staying true to the authentic feel but naturally with a modern twist.

Julian Bliss says "I decided in the summer of 2010 that I wanted to start my own Jazz group. I enlisted the help of Neal Thornton (Piano) to help make this dream a reality. We spent months listening to every version of each tune we could find, and putting together our own versions while still being mindful of the light and fun feel Goodman captured all those years ago. We then had the task of putting the rest of the band together. We were specifically looking for musicians that had a great interest in the Swing era, and I must say we couldn't have picked a better set of players"

Patrick Hawes returns to disc on Signum with the premiere recording of his 'Lazarus Requiem', for Choir, Orchestra and Soloists. Blending the liturgical text of the Requiem Mass with the story of Lazarus from the New Testament, the composer blends a work in which "the mystery of life and death, the pain of grief and the hope of a risen life are held in taut symmetry".

The work begins with an orchestral Elegy for Lazarus. This depicts the dying man and sets the scene for the first tableau where we are informed "a certain man was ill". Mary and Martha, the sisters of Lazarus, send for Jesus and the drama of the miracle unfolds. The main characters within this drama are sung by the soloists: tenor 'Christ' (Thomas Walker), soprano 'Mary' (Elin Manahan Thomas) and mezzo-soprano 'Martha' (Rachael Lloyd).

A former Classic-FM composer in residence, Patrick Hawes' compositions have a unique depth and sentiment that appeals to many different listeners. Previous discs with Signum include Song of Songs (SIGCD162) and Fair Albion (SIGCD178) featuring Julian Lloyd Webber.

"Patrick Hawes has carved out a niche as a contemporary composer who writes melodic, atmospheric and, frankly, beautiful music." (BBC Music Magazine)

He appended not only the title 'Romantic' but even included a programme for the Fourth Symphony, sometime after composition. Though he later withdrew it, the scenario is a mediaeval Romantic ideal, where knights awaken to the sound of horns, rejoice and repair to prayer, before the inevitable hunt and ensuing festivities.

" ...the most immediately striking thing about this disc - apart from the excellence of the recording quality - is the brilliance and virtuosity of the performances ... I regard this as an important recording and I recommend it unreservedly."
International Record Review (SIGCD222)

"Hakim's spiritual exuberance is expressed in harmonically ear-tickling music which sings and dances, accelerating, in his inimitably breathless toccatas, to the insane-sounding speeds of whirling dervishes."
Choir and Organ Magazine (SIGCD222)

Image 1714 Silbermann Organ of Freiberg Cathedral
David Goode, organ

David Goode performs a grand selection of some of Bach's best organ works - including the famed Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor - providing modern listeners with a unique chance to hear Bach's music as congregations of that period may have done.
The Gottfried Silbermann organ of Freiberg cathedral is one of a handful of such 18th-century instruments (built during Bach's lifetime) to have remained largely unmodified to this day. Bach's work as an organ inspector shows that he tested and inaugurated a number of Silbermann's organs in Germany and, although there is no record that he played this instrument, its sound is undoubtedly one that Bach would have recognised and composed for.

The GRAMMY-award winning artist Hila Plitmann is known worldwide for her astonishing musicianship, light and beautiful
voice, and the ability to perform challenging new works.

On this disc she brings together a very personal programme that draws on her familial roots in Jewish culture and song;
from traditional folk music (Five Yiddish Songs), to contemporary compositions (Bridges of Love, Tehilim and I Never
Saw Another Butterfly). The disc also features the 'Five Hebrew Love Songs', with poetry by Plitmann set to music by the
composer Eric Whitacre (her husband).

Nicolas Hodges (piano)
London Sinfonietta
Thomas Adès (conductor)
Tal Rosner & Sophie Clements (visuals),
Thomas Adès & Rolf Hind (pianos)

The London Sinfonietta combine two works from Thomas Adès, one of the most distinctive and popular voices in modern composition. Both works feature accompanying films (by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements) that are included in this CD/DVD set.

'In Seven Days' is a musical interpretation for piano and orchestra of the biblical 'creation' by Thomas Adès, composed in collaboration with a film-piece by the artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. Both music and film evoke the processes of the creation rather than the objects described in the movement titles, using simple elements in repeated and evolving contexts in a perpetual state of flux, change and growth.

The 'Piano Studies' Nos 6 & 7 are arrangements of player-piano works by the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. An influential figure to generations of composers, Nancarrow's studies for the player-piano (or pianola) allowed him to generate music of extreme rhythmic complexity in a multitude of inventive ways. These arrangements for two pianos by Thomas Adès capture the strange magic of the originals, where fragmented musical ideas are played off against each other in a wild, almost jazz-like way. The works are accompanied by film-visualisations by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements.

Image Pieces for Keyboard
Jill Crossland, piano.

Jean-Philippe Rameau's modest output of works for keyboard (around 50 in total) are a crowning influence in French 18th-century instrumental music - summed up by one commentator as being "a paradigm of his mastery, for surveying it is to review many facets of his greatness". Famed for his additional contributions to French opera and for his advances in musical theory of the day, his keyboard works are beguiling in their mix of subtle beauty and virtuosity. The characterful works invoke both pictorial and poetic themes - a style that performer Jill Crossland describes as an "ability to characterise, to construct a miniature world in a few instants."

The Choir of the Temple Church
James Vivian (director)

The Psalms of David are arguably the portion of the Old Testament that has been enfolded most completely within the Christian tradition and its liturgies. Their messages of strife and joy, prayer and praise, resonate strong and loud alongside the teachings of Jesus and find special expression in musical settings. This disc is an exploration of all these themes, as interpreted by composers over the course of four and a half centuries.

The Temple Church is one of the most historic and beautiful churches in London. Situated between Fleet Street and the Thames Embankment, its recorded musical history extends back to its restoration in 1841, although a church has stood on the site for over 800 years. This is Signum's second disc with the choir, following 2010's release of 'The Majesty of Thy Glory'.

Image Sinfonia in B
Malmö Opera Orchestra / Joseph Swensen, conductor & violinist

'Sinfonia in B' is Joseph Swensen's orchestration of the little-known original version of Brahms' B major piano trio. In Swensen's own words: "Completed in 1854, it is the largest and arguably the most important of Brahms' published early works, yet it remains nearly unknown to most musicians and music-lovers alike ... The original Opus 8 is, for me, intriguing for many reasons. Not only is it a work of extraordinary quality and emotional depth, written by a composer just 21 years of age, but it is a quintessential example of Brahms' ultra-romantic and forward looking early style."

This disc also explores the young Brahms' connection with Robert and Clara Schumann, with orchestrations and performances (as a violin soloist) by Swensen of miniature works by both composers - as well as extracts from the 'F-A-E' sonata, a joint composition by Brahms, Robert Schumann and Joseph Joachim based on the motto 'Frei aber einsam' / 'free but lonely' - Joachim's personal motto.

Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood continue their performance partnership with this recording of sonatas for cello and piano by Shostakovich, Britten and Prokofiev. Walton and Grimwood are accomplished performers who regularly work together both on disc and in concert, as well being highly active in the wider musical world.

A recent highlight for Walton is his North York Moors Chamber Music Festival (where both he and Grimwood performed), which was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic society award in 2011.

"Jamie Walton's mature cello timbre and perceptiveness in matters of interpretation and winningly applied to this coupling of two 19th-century sonatas ... Finely honed stylistic judgment here goes hand in hand with re-creative panache."
The Daily Telegraph

"There's a combination of youthful energy and well-seasoned musicality that Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood thrive on here and it's a real partnership ... Fine playing"

Image Shared Ground
Ex Cathedra / Jeffrey Skidmore

'Shared Ground' is a set of works by the British composer Alec Roth, featuring several poems and sung texts by the Indian writer Vikram Seth. The title piece of the same name is inspired by Seth's poetry following a decision to buy and live in the Old Rectory in Bemerton - the former home of the 17th-century poet and priest George Herbert. Other works on the disc expand this idea of a shared home or dwelling, with 'Earthrise' - collection the reflections of Apollo astronauts on viewing the planet from orbit - and 'Hymn to Gaia'.

This disc follows the 2008 release of Roth's Songs in Time of War (SIGCD124), featuring the tenor Mark Padmore with Philippe Honoré, Alison Nichols (harp) and Morgan Szymanski (guitar):

"Padmore's clean tenor finds an ideal vehicle ... there's a transparent, haunting beauty about it, and the accompaniments for violin, harp and guitar are a joy." The Times

"These are attractive works ... the performances (by the "creator" artists) are excellent. ... If, for many of our readers, the recital constitutes an introduction to this composer, it is one which I should say they will not regret following up."

Philharmonia Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Sometimes known as 'The Tragic' - a title suggested but then withdrawn by the composer - Mahler's Sixth Symphony embodies much of the inner turmoil and superstition of its composer. Conceived at perhaps one of the happiest periods of Mahler's life, it seems to foreshadow the personal tragedies that would later befall him - with his wife Alma writing that "The music and what it foretold touched us deeply."

Esa-Pekka Salonen's work with the Philharmonia for the City of Dreams: Vienna 1900-1935 concert series has produced a number of powerful, live concert recordings for the Philharmonia series, including Schoenberg's Gurrelieder, Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique and Mahler's Symphony No.9 - all of which have been praised by critics following their release on Signum.

Anais Nin is a monodrama based on the diaries of the same famed author, as well as those of her lovers (Antonin Artaud, René Allendy, Henry Miller and her own father). Tenebrae / Nigel Short

Following a string of five-star reviews for their previous discs of 20th-century French choral music (Poulenc's Figure Humaine ) and Renaissance polyphony (Victoria's Requiem), the professional chamber-choir Tenebrae go from strength to strength with this new recording of British partsongs and choral music - centred on Hubert Parry's Songs of Farewell.

Composed towards the end of Parry's life, the Songs of Farewell have taken on something of an epithetical interpretation; they are almost a musical summation of his compositional life, reflecting Parry's love of English renaissance madrigals and partsongs as much as the influence on his work from German composers like Brahms - made more complicated as these works were composed as the country (and its music) fell out of favour at the start of the Great War.

"Alistair Dixon, the conductor and founder of Chapelle du Roi, has shaped a remarkably beautiful CD here"
Evening Standard

"the sound is finely honed and balanced, in the British tradition ... this is wonderful music, wonderfully sung"
Jerome F. Weber - Goldberg

This disc is the third in a series of nine covering the complete works of Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585). Not for nothing is Tallis known as the "father of church music" - with his colleagues at the Chapel Royal he created most of the church music genres that we take for granted today.

In chronological terms Volume 3 follows on quickly from the Edwardine music of volume 2 with repertoire written for the Marian reversion to Catholicism in 1553. Here we meet Tallis the composer of music for the old English liturgy in both a modern "continental" style and a self-consciously old fashioned English style.

The music includes the extraordinary seven part mass Puer natus est nobis of 1554 and the similarly-scored motet Suscipe Quaeso. A speculative reconstruction Beati immaculati opens the disc and it concludes with the monumental six part votive antiphon Gaude Gloriosa.
