Image Divertimento

Image Allan Pettersson
Musica Vitae, with fifteen members, is one of Sweden's best-reputed chamber orchestras with a repertoire of classical as well as contemporary art music. On this release Musica Vitae plays music by Allan Pettersson: from The Barefoot Songs and Concertos for String Orchestra Nos. 1 and 2. The solo singer is Olle Persson and the ensembleae is conducted by Petter Sundkvist - head conductor of the ensemble.

Allan Pettersson, an eccentric personality in Swedish musical life, wrote sixteen symphonies, three string concertos (two of which are included on this record), a viola concerto (the viola was his "own" instrument before he quit playing in the orchestra and devoted himself to composing), two collections of songs and a number of chamber music works. Some of these works are released on the Caprice label. The Barefoot Songs were composed in the early 1940s and are a central part of Pettersson's oeuvre.

Olle Persson, well-known from a number of Caprice recordings, is one of the most sought-after Swedish singers in his field. His versatility and theatrical talent make him a frequent guest in different contexts, on radio and TV, recordings and as a guest soloist in great demand at the Folk Opera in Stockholm. He has also participated in productions at the Malmö Opera, the Gothenburg Opera, the Drottningholm Palace Theater and the Royal Opera in Stockholm.

Many internationally renowned soloists and conductors - Swedish as well as foreign - have been guests of Musica Vitae, which is also heard and seen regularly on radio and TV. The ensemble goes on tours, which provides many contacts that stimulate and inspire. They play frequently in southern Sweden and in the larger concert halls throughout the country. The ensemble has played at many music festivals and has had guest performances abroad, in Portugal, Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Spain, China and the US.

Image Live in Gustaf Vasa Church
This CD contains live recordings with The Stockholm Boys´ Choir from Gustaf Vasa Church, from the Stockholm Concert Hall and from a tour in Italy during the choir´s 70th anniversary in 2008. The choice of music has deliberately been made in order to show the width of the choir´s repertoire and includes two remarkable premiers, composed by Hans-Ola Ericsson and Carl Unander-Scharin.

The Boys Choir is nowadays associated with classical choir music in an English tradition, a change which was made possible by allowing the men's choir to become a permanent part of the choir. Earlier the men's choir had only accompanied the boys' choir on certain occasions. By uniting boys' and men's voices at the same time as alto boys were exchanged for counter tenors, conductor Roland Nilsson gave The Stockholm Boys' Choir a new tonal identity, a new timbre that opened the way to a new exciting repertoire.

Each year the choir gives a large number of concerts in Sweden, participate on TV and at the Opera House in Stockholm. The choir also goes on tour regularly. The choir has visited USA and most countries in Europe several times.

A number of Wirén's then colleagues participate, such as the conductors Tor Mann, Sixten Eckerberg and Sixten Ehrling. We can listen to, among others, Stig Ribbing, piano; Sven Karpe, violin; Maurice Maréchal, cello; and Dag Wirén himself at the piano and as conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Among the recordings are the Serenade for String Orchestra Op. 11, of which there exist today no less than twenty-two commercial recordings: nine British, seven Swedish, two Canadian, one Australian, one German, one Swiss, and one Chinese! A Swedish classic!

Bernhard Crusell

Image Jazz goes Classical
* A comprehensive collection of the best “crossover” projects from Jazz to Classical music and vice versa

* Many of the albums appear here for the first time on CD

“Jazz is a big word, it covers a multitude of sounds”, said Leonard Bernstein on a record aptly called “What Is Jazz?”, which he recorded in 1956 for Columbia. Like many of his classical contemporaries, Bernstein was intrigued by the spirit of improvisation and innovations of Jazz. That the Jazz-world and its protagonists were just as interested in classical music, or at least various aspects of it, can be seen not only in the many interpretations of classical works by Jazz composers and players, from “Play Bach” to Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite”, but also in the concert-series “Jazz at the Philharmonics”, which presented Jazz in classical halls around the world, thereby raising its profile and appreciation.
The eighteen exceptional albums documented in this 10 CDbox-set predominantly show the love affair that Jazz, also known as “America‘s Classical music”, had with its European counterpart in the late 50s and early 60s – from “Third Stream” works, a Jazz-wise interpretation of modern composed music, to jazzy interpretations of classical masterpieces by Bach, Grieg, or Tchaikowsky. These prime examples of what happens when “Jazz Goes Classical” create a brave new world, where some of the most fabulous of melodies meet improvisations and interpretations by Jazz-greats like Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Giuffre, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, The Modern Jazz Quartet, and many more.
Included in this comprehensive collection, the very first of its kind, are many rarities. An album like John Benson Brooks’ “Alabama Concerto”, a fine feature for Cannonball Adderley and Art Farmer, is as hard to find as Gunther Schuller’s “Symphony for Brass and Percussion”, which features such soloists as Miles Davis or J.J. Johnson.

Together with Alfred Brendel, Friedrich Gulda and Paul
Badura-Skoda Jörg Demus is ranked among the stars of
a line-up of famous Viennese pianists. He was tutored and
influenced by such pianist legends as Yves Nat, Wilhelm
Kempff, Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer. He made a
name for himself as one of Fischer-Dieskau’s congenial
accompanists, also as an outstanding interpreter of
Schumann’s works. He belongs to the first generation
of pianists who seriously put their minds to historicallyinformed
performance practice. Alongside the classical
Viennese and Romantic repertoires he had a strong
affinity to baroque music. The present recordings from
1974 substantiate his devotion to the works of Bach, the
great baroque master.
The “Goldberg Variations” belong to Bach’s absolute
masterworks. At the time of their composition they
towered over anything preceding them and they are
still unquestionably one of the greatest variation cycles
in musical history. In writing his “Six Partitas” Bach
wanted to create “keyboard exercises” that would be
used for the amusement of amateurs and lay persons
and prepare them for the challenges of more demanding
works. Demus, noted equally for his superb technique
and sensitive playing, delivers virtuoso interpretations of
these milestones in piano literature.

When Annie Fischer decided to severely limit her public performances after the death of her husband in 1968, her concerts achieved cult status with piano enthusiasts. Finally she had become one of the „Grande Dames“ among the small group of great female pianists of the 20th century. She had always been very self-critical when it came to her album-productions in the studio and the examples compiled in this 10-CD collection document the most audilicious results of this – especially as they are complemented by a few highly interesting live recordings. Annie Fischer, born in Budapest in 1914 and buried there in 1995, attracted attention via her talent early on, so much so that Ernst von Dohnányi took over a part of her education. She won the competition for the coveted Liszt Prize in 1933 as the youngest participant; it was the beginning of an international career. During the Second World War she emigrated to Sweden, but returned to Budapest in 1946, where her husband took over the management of the opera house, and from where Annie Fischer traveled to the musical metropolises of the world.

Herbert von Karajan described the playing of Rumanian pianist Dinu Lipatti as follows:

"(...) it was no longer piano playing, but music that was absolutely free from gravity."

The admiration that musicians and music lovers still hold for Lipatti - even years after his premature death - borders on the worship usually reserved for saints. The exceptional pianist died of cancer at the early age of 33 but during the few years he was able to give concerts he made a number of important recordings.

The recordings on hand were made between 1937 and 1950 and give a good idea of his subtle and extraordinary art of interpretation. Several of these recordings are considered "recordings of a century" or have been labelled "unsurpassed" - including the Schumann Piano Concerto, the award-winning Chopin Waltzes and Johannes Brahms' Love Songs Waltzes for Four Hands recorded together with Nadia Boulanger. In addition this compilation contains all the pieces performed by Lipatti at his famous „last concert" in Besanç, where the severe illness had already left its mark on the pianist.

Franz Liszt was without doubt one of the most colorful musician personalities of his day. As an instrumental virtuoso celebrated throughout all of Europe-only to be compared with Paganini - Liszt fundamentally revolutionized piano playing techniques and as such became the founding father of modern piano playing.
This comprehensive compilation of Liszt's works features a whole series of top-class pianists - including Wladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Alfred Brendel, Claudio Arrau and György Cziffra. The recordings were made between 1932 and 1994 and as such provide an interesting insight into the interpretation history of the works. World-class orchestras like the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the "Wiener Symphoniker" and the Philharmonic Orchestra present the Hungarian composer's orchestral works. In addition to both "Piano Concertos" and symphonic poems like Tasso and "Les Préludes", the "Faust Symphony" - one of the most important symphonic works of the nineteenth century - can also be enjoyed on this compilation.

Benjamin Britten is the most-often-performed British composer of the 20th and early 21st century. Born a hundred years ago in the English county of Suffolk, Britten is ranked alongside such great English names as Walton, Elgar and Delius for his symphonic and concertante writing, yet it is in the field of opera that he has gained exceptional standing, being numbered among the most important twentieth-century composers of stage works.

His first opera Peter Grimes was a sensational success and marked his international breakthrough as a composer. The present London recording of 1958, conducted by Britten himself, enjoys benchmark status and is regarded as a milestone in the history of the gramophone. Other works in first-rate recordings from the early Fifties to the present century, forming part of this tribute to Benjamin Britten, include the everpopular Ceremony of Carols, the Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, the song cycle Les Illuminations, the Sinfonia da Requiem, the Nocturne for tenor, seven obbligato instruments and strings, and the ballet music to The Prince of the Pagodas. Together with Britten's lifelong partner Peter Pears - here to be heard as the gifted interpreter of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin - this selection also presents Herbert von Karajan, the Vienna Boys' Choir, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Dennis Brain.

Image Spanish Classical Guitar (10CD-box)
Southern Spain - the Alhambra, Sevilla, Aranjuez, Flamenco, fiery temperament, sun and bullfighting - many outstanding composers have fallen under the spell of this unique region which has been a source of inspiration and engendered world-famous pieces. Grenada's architectural monument to Moorish history has turned several artists into true "Alhambrophiles", among them well-known names such as Albéniz and Joaquín Turina but also the more recently discovered Emilio Serrano, Ruperto Chapi and Jésus de Monasterio. The great Francisco Tárrega contributed to the romanticisation of the Moorish past with his wonderful piece Recuerdos de la Alhambra, a veritable "earworm". Also interesting is the music and history of Enrique Granados's idée fixe, his fascination for the demimonde of the majos and majas in the Madrid court of Charles III, reflected in, among other works, his collection of tonadillas and Doce danzas españolas - which bring together music of the court and the people, outstandingly performed here by the Spanish Art Quartet.
It is well known that many French composers were inspired by the dances of southern Spain. Flanking the perhaps bestknown Bolero in musical history is a truly Spanish selection of compositions by French masters. It includes of course Bizet's "Carmen" suite, emotionally-charged and clearlystructured music that, as performed here in an arrangement for four guitars, evokes its origins more articulately than many other versions have done. This collection of guitar music of the highest quality captures the sunlight and melancholy of Spain as no other...

Charlie Chaplin, the author of this quotation, was one of
the many great admirers of this magical performer at the

“one of those extraordinarily gifted individuals whose very
being is filled with music, who has that wonderful instinct

hard work nor by effort of will alone”. These 10 original
albums with bonus tracks dating from 1934 to 1960
constitute a fine documentation of the highly cultivated and
sensitive playing of an exceptional pianist. Her legendary
reputation as an interpreter of Mozart is in keeping with the
large proportion of excellent Mozart recordings. Further
highlights in the history of interpretation, here taken from

well as solo works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven,

Caprice Records proudly presents the reissuing of something notably unique: the only recording that has ever been made of Moses Pergament's The Jewish Song. The tragic oblivion surrounding this creation is perhaps typical of Swedish musical life's relationship to its grand masterpieces. The recording was made in 1974 in conjunction with a concert performance at the Stockholm Concert Hall, and is completely unique. Neither has the music been performed as a whole since this event, which seems incomprehensive when listening to it.

Finnish-Swedish composer Moses Pergament (1893-1977) is perhaps one of Swedish music history's most well-kept secrets. In contrast to e.g. Lars-Erik Larsson and Wilhelm Stenhammar the name Moses Pergament is one largely forgotten today, but during his time he was regarded as one of the major figures in Swedish art music. For the public, he was most famous as a music critic and annalist, whose educational and descriptive style made him an important voice for the understanding and acceptance of the radical new musical trends, and the unprecedented development that followed. In a time when the Swedish art music business was still highly pervaded by the late Romantic ideals, Pergament harbored a keen interest in new music, and was for example one of quite few in art music to gladly welcome the oncoming of jazz in Sweden in the 1930's. This continued even in old age, for when the experimental electronic music made entrance in the 1960's he claimed that while he could not grasp it musically, it was certainly in "absolute unison" with the rampant technological development of the time - and that was nothing new as far as music is concerned.

Pergament's own sound world was based on growing up in an Orthodox Jewish home in Helsinki, and the historical, religious musical culture that he had access to. As he himself put it, it gave him the "intuitive basis for my music". He studied the early ancient notation, (e.g. neumes, still used in Jewish worship services to sing by) and learned the history of Jewish musical culture, from the Old Testament stories of Moses' song of praise to Israel and "the music's ancestor" Jobal, to today's sacred and popular Jewish music.

The tremendous work The Jewish Song was composed during a three week period in 1944, at a time when the extent of the German Nazis' crimes against Jews, Roma, homosexuals and others, had just begun to be unveiled. The music, written for soprano, tenor, chorus and orchestra, takes us through history and switches between moods of deep bitterness, pride and confidence in the future. The lyrics are taken from two of the Swedish author and art historian Ragnar Josephson's poetry collections, The Chain (1912) and Jewish Poems (1916), in which Pergament among other things found, quote, "The feelings of a true Jew. Not a despicable nationalism, but a liberating feeling of belonging, even in the midst of great suffering ".

Image Visions And Non Thoughts

Varje sångares uttryck ges plats i kollektivet.

Image Teaching

The tenaciously active superstar Eric Ericson celebrated his 90th birthday on October 26 2008. His international celebrity status is exceptional, and people everywhere talk with reverence of the "Swedish Choral Miracle" - an expression that is very much synonymous with his life work.

Alongside his magnificent career as a conductor, Eric Ericsson has been an educator at all levels of instruction. Between 1952 and 1983, he was a teacher at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and it is hard to imagine a single Swedish choir conductor who has not met him in this role. Ericson bases his teaching methodology on his own musicianship and his uncanny ability to create the choral sound that has made.

In this unique 14-part documentary film "Teaching", Birgitta Öhman and Swedish Television have captured Eric Ericson's playful yet inspirational style of teaching at the Royal College of Music in the 1970s. Caprice Records in collaboration with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music presents this TV series on one DVD along with a bonus interview with Ericson from 2008.
Experience for yourself the process of interpreting and performing choral music from all eras.

Appearing is Eric Ericson, Anne Sofie von Otter, Marianne Eklöf, Thomas Jennefeldt, Stefan Parkman, among others.

Image Treasures

The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir's treasure chest has been scoured here for unique live recordings with Eric Ericson from the 1970s up to 2008. Gems include Benjamin Britten's Sacred and Profane, which, based on mediaeval texts from the 12th and 13th centuries, was his last choral composition for a professional ensemble. Lars Edlund's Två dikter to texts by Östen Sjöstrand for mixed choir and piano sets a contrast, and Gustav Mahler's spiritual 16-voice Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen is recor¬ded as recently as the spring of 2008. Daniel-Lesur's se¬ven-part Cantique des Cantiques demonstrates Ericson's interest in and associations with the French tonal idiom. Finally, the Chamber Choir is joined by Eric Ericson's other favourite choirs - the Swedish Radio Choir and the Chamber Choir of the Royal College of Music - for a performance of Arnold Schönberg's powerful Friede auf Erden for eight-voice mixed choir.

The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir started life as the "7.30 Choir", an informal ensemble of few fellow singers who took to singing madrigals in the home of Eric Ericson and his brother Olle. It grew and in 1945 was renamed the Chamber Choir - later the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir - since which time it has occupied a central place in the Swedish and international music world. It has received numerous awards, including the 2007 Nordic Council's Music Prize.

Through his work with his Chamber Choir, the Swedish Radio Choir and Orphei Drängar, through his collaborations with the greatest composers of our time, and through his many disc and radio recordings and countless tours and guest performances around the world, Eric Ericson has made Sweden a major landmark on the world choral map. And he has not given up yet. With his unflagging curiosity, he continues to develop the choral instrument and to push the limits of what a choir can achieve. He has also trained and inspired generations of choir conductors.

Image Made In Sweden

This is mezzo-soprano Matilda Paulsson's recording debut, where she, accompanied by pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin, among other works, performs some very unique songs by Wilhelm Stenhammar.

After her acclaimed debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, playing the dream role Ocatvian, the title role in Richard Strauss' opera "Der Rosenkvalier", Matilda Paulsson has built her international career in parallel with appearances on the Swedish opera scenes. Already in 2007, we could see her perform the two roles Magda Goebbles and Zarah in the premiere of Anders Nilsson's opera "Zarah" (about Swedish singer and artist Zarah Leander) at Folkoperan in Stockholm, as David in Vadstena Academy's production of Handel's "Saul",as Amastre in Handel's "Xerxes" (which was her debut at Drottningholms Slottsteater) and as Ottavia in Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea" (also on Drottningholms Slottsteater). During the fall of 2009 she played the role of Arsamene in the Royal Opera's production of Xerxes.

Accompanied by pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin, Matilda takes on some highly romantic Swedish songs on this album, entitled "Junge Liebe" ("Young Love"). Among the romances on this album we hear Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's now seldom heard Nietzsche and Ricarda Huch songs, Emil Sjögren's Sex sånger ur Julius Wolffs Tannhäuser, op. 12, and Wilhelm Stenhammar's virtually unknown, and slightly sensational compositions to poems from Heinrich Heine's famous Buch der Lieder - the song cycle "Junge Liebe", that also has given name this album.

Bengt-Åke Lundin, piano, had a sensational debut in 1989 when he perfomred Tchaikovsky's piano concerto in B-flat minor with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then he has concertized extensively and is today an internationally active concert pianist and chamber musician. Bengt-Åke Lundin is also one of the most sought-after accompanists in Sweden. Bengt-Åke Lundin is represented on several Caprice releases, such as "Svenska pianokonserter" ("Swedish Piano Concertos"), and solo recordings with works by Godowsky resp. Åhlström and Johnsen as well as recordings with works by Bartók and von Dohnányi. The latter two, with violinist Cecilia Zilliacus, won one Swedish Grammy each, in 2000 and 2002.

This album has been released with support from the Anders Wall Foundations.

Image Perceptions Of Time
Mats Bergström is without a doubt one of Sweden's most famous and prominent guitarists. He has been active as a soloist, accompanist and ensemble musician in a lot of different genres. Mats tries to go beyond and elaborate on the concept of chamber music and is often engages by, for instance, musikFabrik in Cologne and Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt.

On "Perceptions of Time" Mats, together with bass player Anders Jormin and violinist Joakim Svenheden, plays works by Anders Jormin, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, Staffan Mossenmark and Jesper Norda.

This trio displays a very keen and beautiful execution in the seven compositions. Among other things, we are shown a totally reworked, and by Arvo Pärt personally authorized, version for guitar and violin, of Pärt's classic Fratres. Anders Jormin has contributed with specially written music he and Mats previously has done together. The trio also performs a very rare piece, by Polar Music Prize winner Sofia Gubaidulina, Serenade.

In the booklet Christine Falkenland contributes with some poetic illustrations.

Image Small Small Small Small Sounds
The duo Josef och Erika, known for their intimate and fascinating appearances, introduce their second album "Small small small small sounds". Their first album "Wallpaper stories" from 2005 was warmly received and was appointed one of the top ten jazz albums of 2005 by the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. Their music is influenced by both singer/songwriter and modern improvised music.

Josef Kallerdahl (bass) is known from bands like New Tango Orquestra, MusicMusicMusic and from Nils Berg 5 ("Jazz in Sweden" 2007). Erika Angell's (formerly Alexandersson) voice have been heard in a lots of different contexts; she has, for instance, toured the world with indie act Loney, Dear; she is the voice in the duo The Moth (with drummer Martin Öhman) and is, of course, the prominent force in the critically acclaimed band Thus:Owls.

Together, Josef and Erika produces a very soft-spoken and beautiful music in the singer/songwriter tradition that draws closer to jazz and folk than pop or rock. Erika's voice and Josef's electric bass is in the centre of it all. The songs are performed in very fastidious arrangements that now and again are visited by something somewhat unexpected, like a saxophone (Nils Berg), a children's choir or an Indian harmonium (played by Erika).

Image Improvisational One
A beautiful concert hall with a big Steinway grand, a pianist and a balance engineer/producer. At dead of night, just before the witching hour. This is the unique setting for Caprice's innovative recording series "Improvisational".

The series gets off to a more than creditable start with pianist Niklas Sivelöv. Just before the recording is due to start, Niklas is given the theme for his improvisation - the Songs and Epistles of Swedish 18th century composer Carl Michael Bellman. We can guarantee that no such Bellman was ever heard previously. Cheeky, classical, jazzy and full of verve. Thirteen of the best-known Epistles have been given new musical costumes. Aided by Niklas's delicate fingers we are regaled, for instance, with blue notes in the sadly beautiful Epistle 30 (Drain off thy glass), Old Man Noah struts his stuff through the key signatures, and in Epistle 44 (Movitz all alone) we travel from the 18th century to 20th century Jan Johansson's "Jazz in Swedish". Thus continues a genre-busting odyssey through the world of Bellman to a rumbustious finale aptly dubbed Finale Hullerombuller (Finale Hurly-burly).

Niklas Sivelöv is a well-known pianist and composer whose performances have been rapturously received the world over. Among other things he is professor of piano at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. From this recording we now know that he is also an outstanding improviser. Niklas has recorded several albums for Caprice Records, for instance works by Alexander Scriabin and Robert Schumann.

In 2009 this recording won two prestigious awards at the "Independent Music Award" in the US. One of them was for Best Album of the Year and the other was the Vox Populi (People's Choice), both in the contemporary classical category. Among others, Peter Gabriel was a member of the jury.

Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was founded already in 1945 by Eric Ericson. The choir has ever since occupied a central position in Swedish and international musical life. It has a very broad repertoire ranging from Renaissance music to the latest avant-garde. Internationally, the choir ranks among the absolute elite because of its professionalism, and it has been awarded a number of coveted distinctions. With several tours abroad every year, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir is frequently heard in Europe, the USA as well as Canada. They have also made many recordings (including a Caprice release with Nordic choral works).

Eric Ericson himself, born in 1918, is the unrivalled master in the field of choir conducting for the vast majority of choir leaders and choral singers. He has received many awards, including the Music Prize of the Nordic Council and the Polar Music Prize. Eric Ericson is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and an honorary president of the International Federation for Choral Music.

On this album the choir sings music by Hans Werner Henze and Dmitri Shostakovich - two composers that were in the limelight during 2006. Hans Werner Henze's music was performed at the Composer Festival at the Stockholm Concert Hall in the same year, and here the choir performed Henze's Orpheus Behind the Wire for a cappella choir, a work that is included on the album. In the festival Music Around, in the Öresund region, the same year, Shostakovich was the theme and the choir performs his Songs on Poems of 19th Century Revolutionary Poets (sung in Russian) on the second part of the album.

"For unusually solid playing, well thought-out musical interpretation, total technical control and outstanding tone quality." With that motivation Jakob Koranyi won the prestigious Soloist Prize in the final that took place in Norrköping on April 22, 2006.

The Soloist Prize, whose main purpose is to present some of Sweden's most prominent young musicians, is arranged biennially by, among others, the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and Concerts Sweden. The winner receives 100.000 SEK, and gets to do a tour for Concerts Sweden and record an album to be released on Caprice Records.

Jakob Koranyi, who won the competition with his brilliant performance of Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante, has studied in Cologne for Frans Helmerson. He holds a degree from thematic studies at Edsberg Manor, and a Post Degree of Performance at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He received the Prix d'Honneur at the Verbier Festival which led to a three year residency with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York. He is a frequent soloist with various orchestras, but he is also very active in chamber musical contexts.

On this recording, which is a part of the prize, Jakob Koranyi gives us Benjamin Britten's imaginative sonata in C major, György Ligeti's challenging sonata for solo cello and Johannes Brahms's popular cello sonata in e minor. He is accompanied by the pianist Peter Friis Johansson, who has studied at the Master's Programme at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm for Staffan Scheja and Anders Kilström. In 2007 Peter won the Young Soloist/Solofoni prize in Helsingborg.

Beginning with Jaakko Mäntyjärvi's magnificent choral work dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in the Estonia disaster and ending with Sven Ahlin's setting of Martin Luther King's freedom speech, the Barents International Chamber Choir and Erik Westberg mark out the realities of our time and our world. It is a powerful, vivid and well-conceived album that touches upon the conditions of our existence.

The Barents International Chamber Choir is a professional ensemble that was formed in 2003. The ensemble has 24 members who were recruited from the Barents region in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. This international mix of singers makes the choir quite unique. The acclaimed and internationally appreciated and established choir conductor, Erik Westberg, has been the initiator and the prime mover in the founding of the choir and the choral center.

The works on the album are Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Lobet den Herrn by Sven-David Sandström, Katedralen ("The Cathedral") by Einojuhani Rautavaara, Solsönerna ("The Sons of the Sun") by Jan Sandström, La dolce Nuit by Bo Holten, Klag-Lied by Bjørn Andor Drage, and I Have a Dream by Sven Ahlin.

Mozart and Nielsen, piano and winds - two great composers, seemingly incompatible, who nevertheless prove to have a lot in common. Mozart was Nielsen's household god. Mozart, the pianist, not only wrote the most brilliant piano sonatas of his time, he also combined the piano and wind instruments in an entirely unique way. His original wind music inspired Nielsen to compose an exquisite quintet for winds - the first of its kind in Scandinavia. That is the music that the Amadé Quintet and the pianist Terés Löf revives on this album.

The Amadé Quintet consists of five wind players, all leaders of their instrument group in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra: Susanne Hörberg, flute; Bengt Rosengren, oboe; Niklas Andersson, clarinet; Henrik Blixt, bassoon; and Hans Larsson, French horn. Their concert debut took place in 2003 and one of the reasons for the formation of the quintet was that they wanted to revive the fantastic repertoire for winds.

The Georgian String Quartet, which was formed in Tbilisi in 1966, isn't only the oldest string quartet in the world, it is also considered to be one of the best. On its second Caprice Records album the ensemble plays string quartets nos. 2 and 3 by Dmitri Shostakovitch and excerpts from Miniatures for string quartet by Sulkhan Tsintsadze.

Shostakovitch himself has said about the Georgian String quartet: "I have heard the Georgian quartet several times. It consists of extremely good artists, all of whom have a very beautiful and good sound, good technique and a superb capacity for ensemble playing. When listening to them, you involuntarily forget that there are four musicians and start thinking that they are one instrument."

Four well-qualified professors at the State Conservatory in Tbilisi form the quartet: Konstatin Vardell, violin; Tamas Batiashvili, violin; Otar Tchoubinichvili, cello; and Nodar Jvania, viola. The quartet has been much in demand in Sweden and has often been on tour here.

Image Bengt-Åke Lundin Plays Åhlström & Johnsen
Bengt-Åke Lundin, one of Sweden's foremost concert pianists, takes a special interest in Swedish music. "As a pianist I have long nourished a dream of finding a Swedish repertoire that can measure up to the international one".

On this album he tackles sonatas by eighteenth-century composers Olof Åhlström (1756-1835) and Hinrich Philip Johnsen (1717-1779) - virtuoso keyboard players active in Stockholm during a period when amateur music-making and concert life flourished.

Olof Åhlström, the controversial music publisher who was often portrayed as a supremely gifted composer, but also as a ruthless and greedy businessman, was the person who introduced the fortepiano as a concert instrument in Sweden. Even though the target group of the keyboard sonatas was music-loving amateurs, there is, according to Bengt-Åke Lundin, a great deal to experiment with in the interpretation.

The older keyboard colleague, Hinrich Philip Johnsen, who accompanied Adolf Fredrik from Holstein-Gottorp when the latter was called to Sweden as successor to the throne, strove to write music that was brilliant and full of variety. As a composer he was highly acclaimed by his contemporaries. Today, however, there are very few compositions of his preserved.

Bengt-Åke Lundin, who was educated at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, has after his 1989 debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra frequently concertized as a soloist with orchestras, given piano recitals and played with chamber groups. Nowadays he is also active as a conductor. Bengt-Åke Lundin has previously recorded a number of Swedish works for Caprice, including the record "Swedish Violin Sonatas" with Cecilia Zilliacus, which was awarded a Swedish Grammy.

Markus Leoson was the winner of the Soloist Prize in 1995 (his debut album, "Percussion", released on the Caprice label, was a part of the prize) and won a number of international music competitions after that. He was the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation P2's Artist-in-Residence during the years 1996 and 1997, which meant numerous concerts and radio recordings (two of them, the works by Eyser and Milhaud, are included on this album).

Markus Leoson was employed at the age of 19 as a percussionist in the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm and later became a solo timpanist there. He is today an internationally sought after percussion soloist, but is also active as a teacher and often gives master classes at different music conservatories and festivals. Markus has a broad repertoire and throughout the years he has worked closely together with many Swedish and foreign composers who have written solo works and percussion concertos expressly for him.

On this album, titled "Malletiana", there are works by pianist/composer Niklas Sivelöv, Philippe Manoury, Alfred Fissinger, Eberhard Eyser, Pietro Rigacci and Darius Milhaud, as well as a work by Markus himself, Ex Machina.

Image Vers La Flamme
"I am becoming increasingly fond of the Caprice label, both in its new issues and historic reissues. This is one of the former, an album recorded in 2005 by Swedish pianist Niklas Sivelöv. Except for Vers la flamme, Feuillet d'album, the op. 57 Moreceux, and the Sonata No. 4, most of this program consists of earlier works by Scriabin. Sivelöv's mission is to show the connections between the earlier works and the later ones, to display, as he puts it in the liner notes, the way in which Scriabin interrupted his lyric moods with emotional outbursts that didn't quite fit in. In this, he succeeds handsomely. Sivelöv's playing is direct, crisp, and fiery. He takes no prisoners in his forthright approach to the music. Nevertheless, I must disagree with some of his tempos and phrasing. None of the slow preludes in the op. 11 set are really slow; lentos are turned into andantinos, andantes into moderatos, andantinos into prestos. Comparing him not only with Mikhail Pletnev in his acclaimed set of the complete op. 11 (Virgin Classics 45247), or even another abridged recording of the op. 11 by Mayron Tsong (Centaur 2946), I found their slower, legato approach more congenial to music that was clearly inspired by Chopin. Ruth Laredo, who recorded what must be considered one of the definitive sets of the complete Scriabin sonatas way back in 1970, points out that as a piano student Scriabin was criticized for his "ethereal" playing, and in those years he slept with a copy of Chopin's preludes under his pillow. Of course, his aesthetic and musical approach underwent a tremendous metamorphosis around the turn of the 20th century, and his own 1910 performance of the Étude, op. 8/12 (also played on this recital by Sivelöv), recorded as a Welte-Mignon piano roll, certainly reveals an approach much closer to the Swedish pianist than to Pletnev or Tsong, but his phrasing is more legato. My point is that both interpretations are valid, and that I prefer a little more backing-off in some of these early works. And yet Sivelöv certainly does make Scriabin's music on this CD, spanning almost the full chronology of his piano output, sound convincingly of a piece. It is as far from the ethereal Scriabin of 1890 as one could possibly get. I've often wondered where Scriabin may have gone musically had he lived to finish Misterium, and of course we'll never know, but Sivelöv's musical and philosophical approach to his music will certainly hold your attention. I personally rank this as one of the great Scriabin issues of all time, despite my caveats."

Niklas Sivelöv is a well-known pianist and composer. He has had great successes with many of his appearances throughout the world. He is, among other things, professor of piano at the Royal Danish Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. He has given master classes in Spain, Finland and in the US. Niklas has, as the only Swedish piano player, been elected into the Steinway Hall of Fame!

Niklas has concertos from Beethoven to Lutoslawski and Ligeti on his wide-ranging repertoire, and he has had piano concertos dedicated to him by contemporary Scandinavian composers. He has, on a regular basis, collaborated with well-known musicians such as clarinetist Martin Fröst and he has appeared together with conductors such as Esa-Pekka Saraste, Alan Gilbert and Kristjan Järvi.

On this recording Niklas takes on Alexander Scriabin's large-scale piano works with, among other things, the poem Vers la flamme (towards the flames), - music from the composer's whole life. This work has also given the name to this album.
Who, then, was Alexander Scriabin? Scriabin lived from 1872 to 1915 and was a unique Russian composer and pianist. He strove to attain a new musical language and wanted to combine music with other art forms. Niklas Sivelöv finds Scriabin and his tone language quite fascinating. It is rhythm and vivid timbres. The performance of this music makes very high demands on the pianist technically. Scriabin was also one of the first to prophesy the use of electronic sounds. This demanding recording of works by Scriabin is perhaps Sivelöv's best ever.

The Rilke Ensemble is a choir based in Gothenburg. Here personal and expressive solo voices come together and each individual voice is equally important and can be heard.

Caprice Records has produced a characteristic album with the Rilke Ensemble in which their well-known conductor Gunnar Eriksson's extensive contact network in the Nordic sphere puts its stamp on the contents. Also rendered here is Gunnar Eriksson's seeking after a genuine expression and an existential relationship to the texts. With the courage not to yield to what is difficult or complicated, he creates, together with the Rilke Ensemble, a unique musical style.

On this album we can listen to works by Bo Nilsson, Bezalel Aloni, Sven-Erik Bäck, Per Nørgård, Karl Erik Welin, Eskil Hemberg, Fredrik Österling, Alfred Janson, Erland von Koch, Claude Loyola Allgén, Nina Åkerblom Nielsen, Allan Pettersson and Karin Rehnqvist.

During the years that have elapsed since the start in 1980, the Rilke Ensemble and Gunnar Eriksson have made many recordings and the numerous concert tours have brought the ensemble all over Sweden, Europe and to the USA. In 2004 the Rilke Ensemble and Gunnar Eriksson received Concert Sweden's and FöreningsSparbanken's distinction "Choir of the Year".

The pianist Daniel Karlsson, born in 1973, was appointed the "Jazz in Sweden"-award in 2005. He is one of the most prominent pianists of his generation, but the album, "Pan-Pan", was the first in his own name.

His hand-picked band on this recording is made up of the trumpet player Magnus Broo, saxophonist Per "Texas" Johansson, bass player Christian Spering and the two drummers Jon Fält and Janne Robertson.

He has written music for them ranging from the meditative and calm to the uncompromisingly fast paced. The tunes all have in common that they are adventurous, surprising, generous, disquieting, beautiful - but also that they are spacious and loose enough for the musicians to be able to make strong personal impressions. He chose the two drummers because he wanted more to happen in the rhythm section.

Daniel Karlsson is perhaps best known as one of five players in the group Oddjob, with numerous tours throughout Sweden and Europe behind them. He has also been heard together with many other renowned Swedish musicians, including Jeanette Lindström, Rigmor Gustafsson, Victoria Tolstoy, Lisa Nilsson and Svante Thuresson, among others.

The "Christina's Journey" project was initiated several years ago by the soprano Susanne Rydén and now there is both a performance and an album with most of the music from the performance. The point of departure is the colorful music, rich in contrast, which surrounded Christina during her year as queen of Sweden and during the years of exile in Rome.

Much of the work on this ambitious project has been spent on research, studying the music, diary entries, correspondence etc. ... The end result was a performance reflecting the lively and modern cultural personality that Christina was and an album of the highest musical quality with Susanne Rydén and the Stockholm Baroque Ensemble.

The music is by Marco Marazzoli (c. 1602-62), Sinfonia e Prologo "L'Aurora" (from the opera "La Vita Humana"), Luigi Rossi (1597-1653) Cantata per Gustavo Adolpho, Vincenzo Albrici (1631-96) Sinfonia à 2, five different pieces from Alessandro Cecconi's collection, Marc Antonio Cesti (1623-69) from the opera "L'Argia", Alessandro Stradella (1639-82) from "La Forza delle Stelle", and from "Il duello" or "La Serenata".

Image Hymn To Life - Choir Music
The first SACD-Hybrid album on Caprice Records was released in February 2003 and featured soprano saxophonist Anders Paulsson, "A Date with a Soprano Saxophone". Now it is time for the next SACD, "Hymn to Life", with the same artist, who has introduced the soprano saxophone as a classical solo instrument.
Underlying his success is his masterly tone, which has inspired about forty composers to write music especially for him. Now he appears with his own music; this time we hear his moving and poetical choral music, which has been inspired by nature.
Participants include the St. Jacob Chamber Choir and the Real Group with vocal soloists Malena Ernman, Håkan Hagegård and Olle Persson. The musicians are Anders Paulsson (soprano saxophone), André Ferrari (percussion), Svante Henryson (cello), Jan Adefelt (bass), and Andrew W. Canning (organ). Gary Graden is the conductor.

The St. Jacob Chamber Choir consists of 32 singers and, together with its leader Gary Graden, has its place of residence at Jacob Church in Stockholm. The choir appears with orchestras on a regular basis and often premieres newly written music. It has also taken part in many international symposiums, festivals and competitions and has won a number of prizes, such as the European Grand Prize, Tolosa, Arezzo, Debrecen and EBU's "Let the People Sing".

All compositions and arrangements on the record are by Anders Paulsson.

Camerata Nordica started in 1974 and is Kalmar län's own orchestra. It has sinced developed into being one of the most important chamber orchestras in Sweden. The artistic director is Levon Chilingrian who became associated with the orchestra in 1997. He is a violinist in demand, born in Cyprus of Armenian parents. Dancing gingerbread men, snowmen, and candy canes share the stage with rats and soldiers in this wholly Swedish version of Tjajkovskij's ballet with choreography by Pär Isberg. Ideas, whimsy, and good humor make the Royal Ballet bloom in this wonderful show, the plot of which is based on Elsa Beskow's well-loved children's book, Petter and Lotta's Christmas.

For the Queen's 60th birthday on 23 September, 2003, while the premiere performance in honor of the Queen of Sweden was taking place, the ballet music from the Nutcracker was released in a special festival package with royal design. The Prince Carl Philip designed, together with an ad agency, the cover for the album.

Leif Segerstam conducts the Royal Opera Orchestra, and Caprice has released the album in collaboration with the Royal Opera. All proceeds from the sale of this album go the foundation Stiftelsen Silviahemmet. Her Majesty Queen Silvia has started this foundation in which she is also chairman of the board. "Sound Masks" is part of the Swedish-Lithuanian collaboration "Sweden-Lithuania Musical Links" and consists of electro acoustic music by the young Lithuanian composer Vytautas V. Jurgutis.

He is one of Lithuania's many exciting composers of today, and has in spite of his youth (born 1976) already written among other things orchestral, chamber, and choral music. His primary area of composition is however electronic music. The works on "Sound Masks" were written from 2001-2002, and Jurgutis has been forced to be his own teacher, since there is no Lithuanian tradition to fall back on within the realm of electro acoustic music.
The album can be played on an ordinary CD player with either 16 or 24 bits resolution. But it is on a home theatre system with a DVD player that can read 5.1 SACD that the CD really comes into its own! Then, one can for the first time actually hear how the sound moves across one's living room, which was earlier something one could only experience in halls that had PA systems with several channels and speakers placed around the room. This is exciting music with original dynamics involving frequencies higher than 15 kHz-so this is also a great opportunity for those interested in hi-fi to test their systems thoroughly!

Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) was a discreet and good-natured man, who never made any fuss about himself or his art. A book was written in tribute to him when he died in 1918, but since then his name has been obscured by other personalities who have taken up more space in Swedish cultural life.

On this third album, in Caprice Records' series of four, we can hear parts of Sjögren's music for the piano, all his music for violin and piano, performed by pianist Anders Kilström and violinist Tobias Ringborg. Emil Sjören's music is characterised by refined and grandiose expression.

Tobias Ringborg, Caprice artist, has recorded ca. twenty albums. He is one of the most exciting musicians of his generation. He has also been working as a conductor since 1997. He has played with all of the Swedish symphony and chamber orchestras and enjoys a successful career abroad.

Pianist Anders Kilström is also a Caprice artist and one of our most appreciated Swedish musicians. He works both as a chamber musician and as a soloist and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in several European countries and in USA. Kilström also works as a teacher at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

Matti Hirvonen, Piano
Robert Schumann
Matti Hirvonen interprets Robert Schumann, Variations sur le nom Abegg, Papillons and Davidsbündlertänze,häfte 1 och 2.
When Robert Schumann finally decided he was going to write music for the piano he did so full time. This enabled him to compose the most beautiful music for the instrument without thinking of anything else than that it would let him express the feelings he had inside. It is a bit strange that these feelings are expressed in a virtuoso way, since he could hardly play the music himself - his right middle finger was useless.
Matti Hirvonen's fingers are in full working order though. He is among the select few Swedish pianists who can express the hidden power that lies in the notes, thanks to their developed technique and sensitivity. The spiritual collaboration between Robert Schumann and Matti Hirvonen means that three important pieces are given an interpretation doing justice to Schumann's passionate, romantic and intricate tonal language.

Sixten Ehrling dirigerar Kungliga Hovkapellet
Wagner, Mahler & Weinberger
Hon har gjort åtskilliga roller, bl. a titelrollen i Carmen.

Sixten Ehrling conducts the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra
Wagner, Mahler & Weinberger
Sixten Ehrling made numerous gramophone recordings and was a guest conductor of the top symphony orchestras in Europe, the USA, Japan, Australia and other parts of the world. He was appointed chief conductor at the Royal Opera in 1976.
Later he returned to the Royal Opera to conduct Tosca, The Bat, The Flying Dutchman, Pelléas and Mélisande, The Rose Cavalier and numerous concert performances of the Royal Opera Orchestra.
The Orchestra of the Royal Opera is one of the oldest still active orchestras in the world; in 2001 it celebrated its 475th anniversary.
Ingrid Tobiasson was appointed Court Singer in the year 2000. She has appeared at the Folk Opera, the Drottningholm Palace Theater, the Norrland Opera and the Malmö Music Theater. She made her debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. She has sung a large number of roles over the years, notably the title role in Carmen.
The five Wesendonk songs are Richard Wagner´s innovative contribution to the art of songs with orchestral accompaniment.
The Kindertotenlieder, written 1901-04, represents a zenith of creativity in Gustav Mahler´s song composition.
Finally, in Weinberger´s orchestral work Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree the theme is a children´s world without sorrow. The simple folk melody has a certain resemblance to the children´s song The Eensy, Weensy Spider. The work is presented here for the first time on CD.

Arctic Air

Bo Nilsson
Arctic Air

Who is Bo Nilsson? He slips out of your grip, and as soon as you think you got him pinned down he changes his hat and his looks quicker than a magician.
On this CD about half a century of music by the unpredictable and ever surprising Bo Nilsson is presented. A liberated, inspired and generous Bo Nilsson offers us his most beautiful music. It is seductive, enchanting and transports the listener to an unknown place in Nilsson's musical garden. In the last bar, the arctic night is smashed in a brilliant Nilssonian piano chord, the composer's own signature to the piece. Here, to be on the safe side, played by the composer himself.
The events on this CD vary from different moments in time, between the different approaches Bo Nilsson had to his musical creation in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 90s. Here you will find Zwei Stücke (the success piece from Cologne 1955), Frequenzen (the definite break-through in 1956) and eight other important pieces written between 1956 and 2001, and as a bonus, a new piece by Gunnar Valkare, Reflexion - Hommage à Bo Nilsson.

Inspired by the tiniest building stones of nature, Quarks, Rolf Enström composed the piece Directions. He composed five more electro-acoustic pieces all with titles from the world of the quarks; Spin, Charm, Strange, Up! and Down, all included on this CD
Rolf Enström has always nourished a keen interest for the natural sciences. After having read in Scientific American in 1979 about the theory of the smallest elements in nature, entities impossible to observe and possible to describe only through their characteristic properties such as spin, charge and colour, Enström composed Directions. At that time he had already planned an electro-acoustical cycle of compositions with a common subject. This resulted in the five compositions on this CD, Spin, Charm, etc. The pieces were meant to be performed simultaneously; the first three have the same length, while the two latter have a somewhat longer duration. This results in time delays and thus creates new combinations.
Rolf Enström was born in 1951. He has studied technology, musical science and philosophy. As composter he is autodidact. He is active as composer-in-residence and teacher at the Swedish Electro-Acoustic Studio. In 1979 he received attention for his tape composition Sequence in Blue and the slideshow Myr. Rolf Enström wants to unite sound and image and at several occasions he has cooperated with the photo artist Thomas Hellsing.

Sundsvalls Blåsarkvintett & Mona Sandströms Kontra
Poulenc & Francaix

Sedan följde bl a mycket kammarmusik.

Poulenc & Francaix
The Sundsvall Wind Quintet (founded 1993) consists of Maria Garlöv Thorsell (flute), Eva Lauenstein (oboe), Inge Magnusson (clarinet), Maria Granberg (French horn), and Sixten Lindström (basoon).
The pianist Mona Sandström Kontra made her debut at the age of 12 with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, and has since then been active as a soloist and chamber musician both in Sweden and abroad. She graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 1987 with highest honors.
We hear the Sextet for piano and winds by Francis Poulenc. Poulenc has a strong position in Swedish musical life; Eric Ericson, among others, has often programmed his music.
Jean Francaix is presented with two works: the Sextet for piano and winds, and the Quintet for winds. Francaix was a kind of provocateur: his music is happy and light, which irritated several of his more "serious" contemporaries. His breakthrough came when he was in his twenties with the Concertino jeunesse for piano and orchestra. Subsequently he wrote a great deal of chamber music.

This CD gives a portrait of the Swedish composer Gunnar de Frumerie (1908 - 87), it includes The Cello Concerto Op. 81 and the Violin Concerto Op. 19.
The CD is rounded off by the Symphonic Variations for Orchestra Op. 25, which is based on the popular Swedish folk song Vårvindar Friska. The Cello Concerto has its origin in a French horn sonata from the end of the 1940s. The sonata was later on transformed into a cello sonata.
The pianist Gunnar de Frumerie was admitted to the State Academy of Music in Stockholm at the early age of 15. In 1945 he began to teach piano there himself and in 1962 he was appointed professor. He composed about 140 works, two-thirds of which contains significant piano parts. He wrote two full-length works for the stage, a ballet, The Night of St. John, and an opera, Singoalla (issued on Caprice), as well as large-scale choral works, organ music, etc.
Tobias Ringborg began a successful career as the winner of the Soloist Prize in 1994. He has performed with all the Swedish symphony and chamber orchestras, and with renowned conductors. He also works as a conductor himself.
Since 1989 cellist Mats Lidström resides in London, where he concertizes, teaches and composes. He has been a solo cellist with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

Image Rachmaninov

A couple of years ago, "Scandinavian Cello" was released on the Caprice label with Petja Svensson and Bengt-Åke Lundin. This second recording is entirely dedicated to Rachmaninov with the Cello Sonata from 1901 as the starting point.
Two of the pieces were recorded for the first time on cello (instead of voice) and piano: "A dream" and "So many moments, so many dreams".
Petja Svensson has reached a position where she shines as a solo artist, soloist with orchestras, and chamber musician, for example as a member in "The European Chamber Ensemble", with eight members from as many countries all playing different instruments. On their earlier Caprice-CD, the Petja/Bengt-Åke duo played the music of Lidholm, Grieg, Kokkonen and Sjögren. The CD was received by excellent reviews, not least for the piano playing of Bengt-Åke Lundin. On this CD, the role of the pianist is even more prominent.
Petja Svensson and Bengt-Åke Lundin have often performed Rachmaninov together. Petja Svensson is a renewer of Swedish cello playing. She is extremely ambitious, has a strong dramatic nerve, a feel for lyricism and a stage presence. On the collaboration with Bengt-åke Lundin, she says: "The two of us have a very rewarding collaboration; when we make music, everything happens intuitively and beyond words."

A Triumph to Exist
The women's choir La Capella, was founded in 1986 by Robert Sund, the former conductor of Orphei Drängar. La Capella is based in Uppsala, and consists of 28 women with plenty of musical talent. The choir has since 1993 been lead by Karin Eklund.
La Capella is a multi-faceted choir which boasts many different genres in its repertoire; it has worked with everything from complex women's choral music to jazz, traditional classical music and Swedish folksongs.
The conductor, Karin Eklundh, has received her education in choral conducting and vocal pedagogy at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and she has developed La Capella's repertoire to include folk music from other ethnic cultures as well as the Swedish contemporary music. Karin has been a choral conductor at the Uppsala Music School since 1996 and as a freelance, teaches courses in singing and conducting.
The choir has diverse concert activities that consist of both sacred and profane works. La Capella has done several recordings for the radio and TV and participated in choral singing competitions, both nationally and internationally, which has resulted in several prizes. The juries have praised La Capella for being "a skillful and interesting choir on a exceptionally high technical and musical level" which "combines beautiful choral singing, elegant presence quality and renewal in a stimulating way for the choral singing." On this CD, La Capella sings Nordic choral music; we hear songs by many of our foremost Nordic composers and lyricists on 16 tracks, of which 3 are by Karin Rehnqvist.

On this CD Cecilia Zilliacus plays works by Bartók and Ernst von Dohnányi together with pianist Bengt-Åke Lundin.
With her acclaimed exquisite and technically well-formed violin playing Cecilia appears in a wide variety of contexts: in the Temmel Quartet, in a string trio - which has no name - with colleagues from the Royal Opera House Orchestra, and the Gothenburg Philharmonic, together with the big symphony orchestras in Sweden and abroad and, often, with Bengt-Åke Lundin. He is the pianist to whom no music is unplayable. With elegance, ease and temperament he can give both the ingenious Bartók and the romantic Dohnányi an expression well suited to these two composers who are so different from one another.
Together Cecilia Zilliacus and Bengt-Åke Lundin create music that leaves the listener breathless, not only because of its virtuosity, but just as much through the surprising musical ideas that glitter in Bartók's sonata, with its roots in Hungarian folk music. As a contrast to Bartók's temperament, Cecilia and Bengt-Åke are given the opportunity to play with full expression in the poetical sonata by Bartók's compatriot, Ernst von Dohnányi. This music demands much of the musicians. Here they give the work an "under-the-surface frenzy" that never allows the romanticism in the music to become an end in itself.

... In the Earth lägger samman sju prosaavsnitt ur invandrareposet Giants in the Earth av den norsk-amerikanske O E Rölvaag.

Eskil Hemberg - Songs and Chamber Music
Eskil Hemberg had, apart from his career as composer, a long and impressive list of commitments in the field of music making in Sweden. His opus list was extensive ...
One of the compositions on this CD, the string quartet from 1973, was previously issued by Caprice on LP. The work gives us an affectionate, sophisticated and slightly ironical picture of the string quartet genre throughout its history (the title Zona Rosa is also the name of a wealthy district in Mexico City, a sanctuary that is not without similarities to the string quartet's existence).
Other works on the CD include Four Lyric Poems for solo soprano. Hemberg has here provided both the text and the music. The soloist is Solveig Faringer, who also sings Like lively strawberries in flock, accompanied by Erik Lundkvist on the organ. The latter spiritual concerto is a setting of a text by Marie Louise Ramnefalk.
Canti di luce e di stelle illuminates poems by Pär Lagerkvist, translated into Italian by Giacomo Oreglia. Here Solveig Faringer is accompanied by the pianist Nanette Nowels-Stenholm.
In Les Adieux, Hemberg's second string quartet, we hear the Vilna Quartet. " the earth" combines seven prose passages from the immigrant epic Giants in the Earth by the Norwegian-American O.E. Rölvaag. The mezzo soprano Ellen Andreassen is the soloist and the pianist is Gustav Asplund.
Finally, we hear Solveig Faringer and Nanette Nowels-Stenholm once more in Five poems on the sea and summer with texts by one of Hemberg's favorite poets, Harry Martinson.

Doris Soffel sjunger Lieder

Doris Soffel sings Lieder
Doris Soffel - one of the greatest sopranos of our time - won the hearts Swedes many years ago when she came to Sweden from her native Germany. On this CD she sings lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler and Massenet.
Over the years she has become even more loved thanks to her many solo recitals in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, in addition to her numerous appearances on radio and TV.
In Germany, Doris Soffel is well known as a leading interpreter of contemporary music. Other Europeans see her perhaps as a "Hosenrollen artist" thanks in part to her huge international successes as Octavian in Strauss´Der Rosenkavalier, Sesto in Mozart´s Titus or Orlovksy in Johan Strauss "Die Fledermaus". She also has an international reputation as a "Mahler Queen" - after performing his song cycles all over the world, Mahler has become somewhat of a "composer in residence" for her.
Doris Soffel has sung with many of the world's most prominent conductors and in most of the great opera houses and concert halls in Europe, the United States and Asia. Her capacity to combine stage charisma, vocal elegance and musicality has made her enormously appreciated as a Lied singer, with Schubert, Schumann and Mahler as her favorites.

Franz Schubert

The Apollo Ensemble
The Trout Quintet/Songs
Franz Schubert
In 1998 The Swedish Concert Institute asked the pianist Matti Hirvonen to put together a chamber music ensemble for a tour and CD recording. Taking as his motto the battle cry; "Let the next century be the century of chamber music!" he brought together a number of Sweden's best chamber musicians in a group which named itself The Apollo Ensemble.
Apart from Matti himself on the piano, on this CD the group consists of Paula Hoffman Fröling, mezzo-soprano, Ulrika Jansson, violin. Per Högberg, viola, Mats Lidström, cello and Håkan Ehrén, double bass.
This is the first time Swedish musicians dared to record the Trout Quintet, one of the most well-known pieces in the chamber music repertoire. With their untiring energy the ensemble presents an interpretation of the work that is as exquisitely weightless as it is pregnant with force and meaning.
In the Adagio (Notturno), the ensemble is reduced to a trio - violin, cello and piano. The music is like a wrought iron work of art, where clarity and small gestures take on a special significance.
Paula Hoffman Fröling and Matti Hirvonen perform nine Lieder by Schubert. In each new song the interaction between the two musicians develops into a fascinating drama, which is accentuated by Paula's emotionally expressive interpretation of the poems, where every word becomes meaningful.

Francisca Skoogh was the 1998 year winner of the prestigious Soloist Prize. On this CD she presents four works for piano, spanning over 75 years of musical creativity.
This is a bold program, covering an extensive repertoire, from the illusively simple, in the waltzes by Ravel, to the dynamic expressiveness in Prokofiev's seventh sonata. People, who were present at the recording session in the big hall of Academy of Music in Stockholm, will tell about the uninterrupted intensity with which Francesca went in for the material.
Her artistic maturity is of a kind that permitted her - in collaboration with the recording technician - to come up with suggestions for alternative sound pictures that would enhance the inner line of thought in the material. What we get is an astonishing CD debut by a young artist, technically clever, artistically expressive, with a complete control over the means to achieve the result intended.

Image Svenska Messingkvartetten
Svenska Messingskvartetten

The Swedish Brass Quartet
Music for Brass Ensemble
The Swedish Brass Quartet is an ensemble composed of musicians from the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, performing on brass instruments of an older Swedish type.
The music on this CD consists of older concert repertoire and light music, a repertoire traditionally associated with this form of ensemble which the quartet has also developed with the help of contemporary arrangements.
The main reason for the formation of the quartet was the discovery in the city of Gothenburg, of an old collection of hand-written part-books for brass quartet from the end of the 19th century. Five of Sweden's foremost wind players, Mark Schrello, cornet, Christer Torgé, tenor bassoon, Aldo Johansson, tuba and Gunnar Wennberg and Hans Larsson, alto horn, present an interpretation of a high artistic standard, making this recording far more than documentary.
Among the pieces on this CD we hear Bridal March from Gotland, the Song to the Evening Star from Tannhäuser, the Canzona from Rigoletto and a potpourri of Bellman tunes.

Musica Vitae & Karin Dornbusch, dirigent: Peter Csaba

Musica Vitae & Karin Dornbusch, Conductor: Peter Csaba
On this CD the chamber orchestra Musica Vitae and Karin Dornbusch play Aaron Copeland's Clarinet Concerto, a piece that was written in the late 1940s, commissioned by Benny Goodman.
It was not Goodman however, who gave the first performance of the work - it was so difficult to play that it took him two years to master it. Listen to Karin Dornbusch in this extremely fascinating piece of music, filled with Charleston, boogie-woogie and Brazilian popular music. On this CD Musica Vitae also performs Aaron Copland's Two pieces for string orchestra, Alberto Ginastera's Concerto per cordes and Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings.

Peärls before swine
The Peärls Before Swine Experience

Peärls before swine
The Peärls Before Swine Experience
This is the first CD with "The pearls before swine experience". In Sweden the group was formerly known as "Pearls before swine".
The four members of the group commission works from eminent Nordic and European composers. In order to permit a concert form close to that of popular music and not sacrifice the artistic quality, all the pieces are short, 5-6 minutes.
The controversial name of the group mocks the common attitudes towards contemporary music at the same time as it underlines the unpretentious approach of the group towards this music.

Image Kammarensembeln Live

The newspaper Svenska Dagbladet called them an "ensemble that defies the law of gravity", and Berlingske Tidene, Copenhagen wrote: "An ensemble of superb soloists, quite young, with an ideal combination of meticulous precision and infectious enthusiasm."
Conductor Ansgar Krook (1962 - 1992) and clarinetist Håkan Rosengren founded KammarensembleN in 1984. Its members comprise principal players, both soloists and eminent chamber musicians, from Stockholm orchestras.
Conductor and composer B. Tommy Andersson has been Artistic Director since 1994. The repertoire concentrates on music - Scandinavian music especially - of the 20th century, presenting a whole spectrum of chamber works from solo pieces to sinfoniettas. The group has played an important part in highlighting young Swedish music, while at the same time introducing international composers in Sweden. Many composers have written expressly for the ensemble, which has more than 50 première performances to its credit.
The listener is and remains an important starting point for the ensemble. The CD KammarensembleN Live, a concert recording from the Berwald Hall, Stockholm, seeks to convey the atmosphere and immediacy of a concert, "when the musicians commitment imparts an extra dimension to the music". The CD contains works by the following composers: Xenakis, Boulez, Grisey, Tanguy and Varèse.

Åke Parmerud
Grains of Voices
Verket uruppfördes på FN dagen 1997 i Dag Hammarskjöld-auditoriet i FN skrapan i New York.

Grains of Voices
The idea of Grains of Voices was born when Åke Parmerud was commissioned to write a work for the Swedish Radio. A journey around the world, recording the different inflections of the human voice then followed and the material was processed in the studio to make this electro-acoustic composition.
Grains of Voices is an electro-acoustic mix, a collage of voices from all over the world - singing, talking and shouting. The work was premiered in the Dag Hammarskjöld auditorium, in the UN headquarters in New York during the celebration of the UN day in 1997. This initiative came from the director of the Swedish Electro-acoustic studio, Ulf Stenberg. This suggestion met the approval of Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Samir Sanbar, assistant secretary general.

Strindberg och musiken
Blandade artister

Strindberg and Music
Various artists
This CD wants to mirror the deeply personal and at times conventional musical world of the Swedish author August Strindberg.
Presented are, in the form of chamber music, the composers who were of great importance to Strindberg: Beethoven, Bach, Schubert, Schumann, Rangström, Grieg, Peterson-Berger and Strindberg's own brother Axel. A work by Strindberg himself, the Song of the Water Spirit, is also presented. When Strindberg was not able to get the composers interested in his texts, he simply, being the eternal all-rounder, wrote the music himself.
The performing musicians are: Anders Kilström, piano, Tobias Ringborg, Violin, John Ehde, cello, Charlotta Larsson, soprano and Marcus Jupither, baritone.

For this record Mats Bergström made a new arrangement of Franz Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin for baritone and guitar. This was also the Swedish baritone Olle Persson's first separate recording. He has been highly appreciated for his many performances at Folkoperan in Stockholm, at the Drottningholm Court Theatre, the Göteborg Opera and the Vadstena Academy. In 1994 he was bestowed with the Birgit Nilsson award.
Mats Bergström has made numerous recordings. He is an internationally active soloist, accompanist and ensemble player in several genres. He has an extensive repertoire, with emphasis on the early 19th century and our own time.
Mats Bergström has also collaborated with Mikael Samuelson in songs by the classical Swedish songwriters Bellman, Taube and Birger Sjöberg.
The miller girl being courted by different characters was a common theme in the late 18th century literature and music. Franz Schubert took on the cycle of poems by Wilhelm Müller published in 1824. The plot circles around the young miller, the miller girl and the hunter. The song cycle became a success. The cooperation Schubert-Müller also resulted in song cycle Die Winterreise.

Musica Vitae
Musica Vitae from Växjö, one of Sweden's leading chamber orchestras, plays under the direction of the internationally well-known Peter Csaba, Ingvar Lindholm's Music for Strings, Thomas Jennefelt's Stockholm in May and Bengt Hambræus' Labyrith: A Concerto Grosso.
In Jennefelt's piece, Stockholm in May, we hear the world's leading trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger as soloist. This is the first CD-edition of this work, which was commissioned by the Swedish Concert Institute and was written in the summer of 2000. The work is a celebration of Stockholm, and one of its starting-points has been the impressions from the scenery of the city with its coves and bays. It is a lengthy song that begins and ends on the same melody. A solo section in the middle, challenges the trumpeter.

Musiken har förutom i Norden framförts i bl a New York, Paris, London och Hongkong.

Göran Gamstorp
Growings for Symhony Orchestra and tape
Göran Gamstorp (born in 1957) achieved his breakthrough with Growings for symphony orchestra and tape, a piece on a very large scale which lasts nearly an hour.
The work is unique, considering the elaborately composed sound tape that runs for 25 minutes of the work's total duration, as well as for the volcanic eruptions in forte-fortissimo juxtaposed to the most delicate pianissimos. In order to create organic unity the composer has analyzed the sounds of water and has utilized the resulting sound material in his composition of the work. Growings was composed in the years between 1988 and 1991 and the tape took one year's hard work to prepare.
Gamstorp was educated at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, where he received his diploma in composition 1990. He has been commissioned to write for the Royal Opera in Stockholm and he was the first Swede to be admitted to the IRCAM's one year course. His works has been performed throughout Scandinavia, in New York, Paris and Hong Kong.

Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) was a discreet and good-natured man, who never made any fuss about himself or his art. A book was written in tribute to him when he died in 1918, but since then his name has been obscured by other personalities who have taken up more space in Swedish cultural life.
This is the first of four CDs, with parts of Sjögren's music for the piano and all his music for violin and piano. Emil Sjören's music is characterized by refined and grandiose expression.
Pianist Anders Kilström is one of our most appreciated Swedish musicians. He works both as a chamber musician and as a soloist and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in several European countries and in the USA. Kilström is also professor of piano at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

Musica Vitae
Leó Weiner komponerade sitt Divertimento no.1 op.20 1934.

Musica Vitae
On this CD Musica Vitae from Växjö presents music from Hungary, the musical home country of Peter Csaba, the conductor of the ensemble. This is great music for strings, very much inspired by Hungarian folk music. The composers are Béla Bartók Divertimento, Leos Janácek Idyla and Leó Weiner Divertimento No.1.
Divertimento for string orchestra was one of the last compositions Bartók wrote before leaving for the USA in 1939. It was composed for the Basel Chamber Orchestra and its conductor Paul Sacher, with whom Bartók had been associated for several years.
Janácek's Idyla is a youthful work, written by Janácek in 1878 when he was 24. This was his second orchestral composition, and he conducted the première performance himself. After that performance the score vanished, and it did not turn up again until 1938, ten years after the composer's death.
Leó Weiner composed his Divertimento No.1 Op. 20, subtitled "After old Hungarian Dances", in 1934. Weiner (1885 - 1960) attracted attention at the beginning of the 20 century, not only in Hungary but also in Germany and the USA, and his music was played regularly up to his death, when it partly lapsed into oblivion. From 1908 onwards he was the leading music teacher at the Budapest Conservatory.
Musica Vitae, formed in 1980, numbers among its distinctions the Expressen Music Prize, "Spelmannen", for 1995. It has made a name for itself as one of the foremost chamber orchestras in Sweden.

Elfrida Andree

Elfrida Andree
Music at Hammersta Castle
Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929) became Sweden's first woman organist, its first -and until just a few years ago, one and only - woman cathedral organist, first woman telegrapher, first professional woman composer and first female orchestral conductor.
In her bid for full educational and professional parity with men, and fired with a boundless love of music, she made a magnificent career for herself. Her compositions number more than a hundred: chamber music, organ music, several orchestral works, two symphonies and, in collaboration with the author Selma Lagerlöf, an opera Fritiofs Saga, not forgetting songs, choral compositions and several large works for soloists, choirs and orchestras. Elfrida Andrée became a nationally famous musician, and without question she was one of the most interesting personalities in Swedish music of her time.
Despite the re-awakening of interest in Elfrida Andrée, the curious fact is that very little of her prolific output has been recorded. A widely noticed performance at Hammersta Castle in 1995 of her Piano Quintet in E minor inspired the idea of a CD portrait of Elfrida Andrée as a composer of chamber music, recorded at Hammersta. This Hammersta recording takes us back to an evening of chamber music as it may have sounded at the turn of the century 1800 - 1900.
The recorded program comprises the Piano Quintet, played by the Stockholm Quartet and pianist Lena Johnson, Four Songs, Lena Hoel, soprano, Lena Johnson, piano, and Ylva Larsson, violin, Piano Sonata, Lena Johnson, piano and String Quartet, the Stockholm Quartet.

Oktetten Ehnstedts eftr.

The Successors of the Ehnstedt Octet
At This Spring
The favorites of times gone by - music at the Spa, presented here in a collection of concert pieces, ballroom music and festive marches.
During the first few summer seasons of the 1890s Magnus Herman Ehnstedt (1833 - 1905) conducted the orchestra at Ronneby Spa. Ehnstedt could hardly be called a celebrity; he was rather a professional military musician among many others. Ehnstedt's Successors, however, are in possession of the notes handed down from Ehnstedt and used by his octet when playing at spas in fashionable Swedish holiday resorts such as Ronneby, Söderköping and Norrtälje.
The ensemble also functions as The Stockholm Home Guard Octet and its members comprise some of the country's best wind players.

Toumo Haapala
Vattenvirvlar/Movements in Rapid Waters
Titeln är Vattenvirvlar/Movements in Rapid Waters och skivan innehåller bl.a. just Vattenspel i Strömmen.

Toumo Haapala
Vattenvirvlar/Movements in Rapid Waters
Tuomo Haapala is a person who has attracted attention on many different accounts: he is a bass player, composer, instrument inventor and theatre/film director. He belonged to the "improvisation group" Iskra, which was active for more than 20 years, starting at the beginning of the 1970s.
Tuomo Haapala has taken part in many recordings but this CD "Movements in Rapid Waters", under the Caprice Records label, was his first solo recording.
"Movements in Rapid Waters" relates to the performance "Midnight Music on the Water" project during the 1992 Stockholm International Water festival, when tens of thousands of spectators experienced something quite out of the ordinary.
Another of Toumo Haapalas projects was a concert in 1995 in the Dannemora Mine, with 330 performers, featuring the most remarkable instruments: keyed fiddles, drills, motorbikes, hammers, choirs, a big band and a white flying elk.

Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Swedish Opera conducted by Sixten Ehrling
The most beloved opera choruses
Ever since the birth of operatic art, in late 16th century Italy, nearly all operas have included choruses of various proportions - setting the mood, commenting on the action, or providing festive openings, interludes and conclusions.
On this CD the most beloved choruses in the operatic repertoire are presented in a magnificent recording by the Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Swedish Opera, conducted by Sixten Ehrling.
The soloists are: Carina Morling, mezzo-soprano, Ingrid Tobiasson, mezzo soprano, Magnus Kyhle, tenor and Anders Lorentzson, bass.

Musica Vitae

Musica Vitae
New Swedish Orchestral Music for Strings
On this CD the Musica Vitae Chamber Orchestra from Växjö presents new Swedish orchestral music for strings. The orchestra, formed in 1980, numbers the Expressen newspaper's Spelmannen Music prize among its awards, and has made a name for itself as one of the foremost chamber orchestras in Sweden.
Daniel Börtz wrote his Variations and Intermezzi for string orchestra expressly with Musica Vitae in mind. This is a composition in five movements, based thematically on the ritual interval of mourning, the falling minor second.
Anders Hillborg's Celestial Mechanics for 17 solo strings and percussion is based on microtonal harmony, partly achieved by tuning each instrument individually.
Tetrachordon for 15 solo strings by Thomas Liljeholm is named after the four-tone scale of classical Greek music theory and builds on the cell, consisting of B, C, E flat and E, presented at the beginning of the piece.
Anders Hultqvist wrote The Winter Garden for Musica Vitae in 1993. The musical "gestures" in this piece are inspired by, and derived from, Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The title alludes to this kind of garden often being a place where all four seasons exist simultaneously.

Stockholms Blåsarsymfoniker
Dirigent: Jun'ichi Hirokami

Stockholm Wind Orchestra
Conductor; Jun'ichi Hirokami

The earlier piece recorded is Ouvertüre für Harmoniemusik, written by 15-year old Felix Mendelsohn in 1824. This is followed by a leap of exactly 100 years to 1924 and the Dane Launy Gröndahl's Romantic Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. The second Viennese school is represented by Arnold Schönberg's Theme and Variations Op. 43 A.
The other three pieces are: Ritual Overture by the Japanese composer Toshirò Mayuzumi, Chorali by the Finn Aulis Sallinen and Aurora by the Swedish composer Miklós Maros.

Emil Sjögren vol. 1
Emil Sjögren (1853-1918) was a discreet and good-natured man, who never made any fuss about himself or his art. A book was written in tribute to him when he died in 1918, but since then his name has been obscured by other personalities who have taken up more space in Swedish cultural life.
Caprice Records presents, in four CDs, parts of Sjögren's music for the piano, and all his music for violin and piano, performed by pianist Anders Kilström and violinist Tobias Ringborg. Emil Sjören's music is characterized by refined and grandiose expression.
Tobias Ringborg, Caprice artist, has recorded a number of CDs.

For many years now, Carl-Axel Dominique has ranked as one of Sweden's most successful pianists. Over the years he has been keenly active in performing and launching piano music by Alkan and Satie. More recently he has also been playing quite a lot of Messiaen, and today he is widely regarded as one of the foremost Messiaen interpreters of our time.

Violinist Tobias Ringborg and pianist Anders Kilström join forces for a recital of neglected compositions and transcriptions by Fritz Kreisler, one of the most popular and successful violinist of our century.
This is a rare opportunity of "discovering" pieces that are seldom, if ever, played nowadays - beyond the well-known territory of Schön Rosmarin or Caprice Viennois.
Tobias Ringborg has been commuting between the USA and Sweden since 1994. Already as very young he gained a succession of prestigious awards.
Anders Kilström, one of the most eminent Scandinavian pianists of his generation, made his début with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1986 with a rapturously received performance of Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto. A dedicated chamber musician, he has come to be associated with many celebrated chamber music constellations, and as a strong supporter of contemporary music he has premièred works by many of today's leading Scandinavian composers.
