The two Swedish composers on this CD were active during the same period, between the 1850s and 1870s, in the same city, Stockholm, and in the same building, The Royal Opera. Also at the Royal Opera the eminent singer Fredrika Stenhammar was a soloist - both Norman´s Waldlieder and Söderman´s Digte og Sange were dedicated to her.

Ludvid Norman (1831-1885) - a pianist, conductor, teacher and music critic with a solid, versatile training behind him, tirelessly campaigning to hoist Swedish music out of a morass of stagnation and stultifying amateurism. Norman, together with Franz Berwald, was the only symphonic composer of real note in 19th century Sweden. His listed output also include many chamber compositions of sterling quality, including over 80 songs.

August Söderman (1832-1876) - also with a musical education both Swedish and international, but above all posessing a wide found of practical musical experience as theatrical director of music and widely popular for the personal, engaging quality of his music.The bulk of Söderman´s output was incidental music for the stage. Many of his instrumental compositions are adapted from stage music, arranged folk music and so on, but above all he is noted for his vocal music, a few "high-romantic" ballads, and very many solo and choral songs.

At 22 he composed a personal and unconventional string quartet in G minor, perhaps the foremost composition from his youth. The Ballad of Marshal Stig´s Daughters inspired Ludvig Jospehson and Agust Söderman with a fascinating drama, first performed at the Stockholm Opera in 1866. The scene is Norway in about 1290, and Marshal Stig´s daughters in exile find themselves in the middle of the contest between King and Church - and love. In this recording, for the first time ever, Söderman´s incidental music is palyed in its entirety and in its stage context, with excerpts from the drama performed by actors from the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

King Erik Jedvarsson of Sweden was murdered in 1160. The holy martyr became Sweden's national saint, and on the 18th May every year the Historia of St. Erik - consisting of plainchant and miracle stories - was performed in medieval churches and monasteries all over the country. This Swedish-Hungarian joint project has revived a treasury of song which is more or less the only music to have come down to us from medieval Sweden.

The "Great Power" period of Swedish history inspired a vision of the Baltic. The coastal provinces were conquered and there developed a Germano-Swedish Baltic culture. In this community, music became a part of a "Gesamtkunstwerk" designed to pay tribute to God and the earthly ruler. Other music was completely untrammelled by the vocabulary of power. Both aspects are present in this production, comprising first-time recordings of Baroque music by Johann Valentin Meder, Michael Hahn, Ludwig Busbetzky and others.

Wilhelm Peterson-Berger is a captivating and controversial Swedish composer and critic whose musical idiom is distinct personal. He was often inspired by folk music, and here in the third symphony, "Same-Ätnam", he pays homage to Lapland by incorporating several Lappish yoiks. From the same period are "Romance for Violin and Orchestra", with its austere as well as gently lyrical character, and the song cycle "Gullebarn´s Lullabies", where Verner von Heidenstam´s heavily symbolic poetry has been interpreted with grandiose simplicity and naive humour.

"Hail to the Thunderer... the Lion cometh." Sweden's "Age of Greatness" in the 17th century was a period of musical brilliance, with tributes to the warrior king Gustavus Adolphus as well as church concerts and intimate courtly music. A fitting conclusion is provided by Albrichi's setting of the Lord's Prayer, which was performed on Queen Christina's abdication in 1654, when Rome acquired a Swedish queen and Sweden its first composition in its own language. Performed, on Baroque instruments, in mean-tone intonation.

The official opening in 1908 of the new Dramaten building in Stockholm betokened the transition from one epoch to another. Dramaten, or The Royal Dramatic Theatre, was now established as the national theatre. Another change led to a more modern kind of incidental music - the aim now being not only to create atmosphere but to express something of the drama and to suplement events on stage.

St. Johannes Chamber Choir / Karin Oldgren

En av Stockholms många fina körer hör hemma i S:t Johannes församling. Kören - S:t Johannes Kammarkör - bildades av sin nuvarande dirigent Karin Oldgren 2002 och firar således sitt 10-årsjubileum i år. Under detta decennium har kören skaffat sig en synnerligen omväxlande meritlista, med allt från klassiska oratorier och traditionell a-cappella-musik till uruppföranden av specialskriven musik och sceniska uppsättningar.

På sin första skiva har kören valt att presentera musik av några av de tonsättare de samarbetat flitigt med: Sven Hagvil, Anders Paulsson och Gabriel Wilczkowski. Till detta har de fogat några favoritstycken av kompositörer från olika länder: svenskarna Martin Bagge och Oskar Lindberg, amerikanen David Lang, rumänen Valentin Gruescu och filippiniern Ryan Cayabyab.
Skivan, som fått titeln Solitude efter den sista satsen i Sven Hagvils stora verk Symphony of Solitarities för kör och sopransaxofon, gick under arbetsnamnet "Efterlängtan". Musiken och texterna har en omväxlande lyrisk och dramatisk karaktär, men genomgående är det välklingande nordiska körsoundet.
Dirigenten Karin Oldgren är kyrkomusiker med utbildning i kördirigering för professor Anders Eby och hon har själv undervisat vid Musikhögskolan i Örebro. Numera ägnar hon också en stor del av sin tid åt musikförlagsverksamhet.

Uppsala Akademiska Kammarkör / Stefan Parkman

Uppsala Akademiska Kammarkör bildades 1957 och leddes till en början av Eric Ericson. Namnkunniga dirigenter har fortsatt att leda kören: Dan-Olof Stenlund, Anders Eby och numera, sedan 1983, Stefan Parkman.

UAK, som kören dagligdags kallas, har en bred repertoar med inriktning främst på den klassiska och nutida konstmusiken. Ofta anlitas kören av orkestrar i större verk, men a-cappella-musiken är ändå dess huvudsakliga repertoar, vilket bland annat visats genom en rad skivinspelningar, bland annat för engelska Chandos.

När Bach-Akademin i Stuttgart ville fira Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdys 200-årsdag, beställde man musik av den finländske tonsättaren Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. Uppdraget gällde att ge de tre psalmerna i Mendelssohns opus 78, Drei Psalmen, en ny musikalisk dräkt. Texterna, liksom den dubbelköriga besättningen, är således desamma i de nyskrivna psalmerna, som fått titeln Stuttgarter Psalmen. 2009 uruppfördes de nyskrivna psalmerna av Uppsala Akademiska Kammarkör och Stefan Parkman vid en minneskonsert i Stuttgart.

På skivan har dirigenten Stefan Parkman valt att låta de två tonsättarnas musik varvas, så att vi först hör Mendelssohns tonsättning av psalm 2 och därefter Mäntyjärvis, osv.

Stuttgarter Psalmen får med denna inspelning sin världspremiär på skiva.

Sopranen Helena Ek, Sofia Vokalensemble, en diskantkör från Stockholms Musikgymnasium, Capella Nordica och Fredrik Sixten framför det första svenska juloratoriet under ledning av Bengt Ollén. Fredrik Sixtens tonsättning av julevangeliet har inspirerats av svensk folkton. Evangelistens roll sjungs av sopransolisten, som tydligt har en folkmusikalisk karaktär och några kända folkliga koraler har flätats in i verket. Koraltexterna är skrivna av Ylva Eggehorn; om dessa nya texter säger Fredrik Sixten: "Vi ville visa att det råder mörker, fattigdom, främlingskap och död runt det oskyldiga barnet, Guds son, som ligger i krubban och som kommer att korsfästas. Trots detta är oratoriet fyllt av glädje och lovsång!" "Ett svenskt juloratorium" uruppfördes i december 2009 i Göteborgs Domkyrka. Fredrik Sixten, domkyrkoorganist i Härnösands domkyrka, är en av Sveriges för närvarande mest sjungna körtonsättare, som även funnit vägar utanför landets gränser. Bland hans tidigare cd-utgåvor märks En svensk Markuspassion (Caprice) och Jubilate (Ictus).

The soprano Helena Ek, Sofia Vokalensemble, a treble choir from Stockholms Musikgymnasium, Capella Nordica and Fredrik Sixten perform the first Swedish Christmas oratorio ever. Conductor is Bengt Ollén. Fredrik Sixten's music to the Christmas story is inspired by Swedish folk tunes. The Evangelist part, sung by the soprano soloist, has a clearly folk music touch; some old Swedish folk hymns are also interwoven. The hymns, sung by the two choirs, are written by the famous Swedish poet Ylva Eggehorn. Fredrik Sixten says about these lyrics: "Our intent was to show that there is darkness, poverty, alienation and death in store for the innocent child, the Son of God, lying there in a manger, who will later be crucified. Yet the oratorio is also full of joy and praise." "A Swedish Christmas oratorio" premiered in December, 2009 at the Gothenburg Cathedral. Fredrik Sixten is a Swedish composer, cathedral organist and conductor. Born in 1962, he earned his BA at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and studied composition with Sven-David Sandström. Today, he is a prominent composer of church music. One of the most performed and published composers of his generation; his music is now being embraced beyond Sweden's borders. Among his earlier recordings are En svensk Markuspassion (A Swedish St. Mark Passion) and Jubilate.

The women's choir La Cappella from Uppsala, Sweden, is today the most excellent choir of its kind in the country. The choir was founded in 1986 by the internationally renowned conductor Robert Sund. Today it is led by Karin Eklundh, who steadily has been broadening the the repertory and the vocal expressions. La Cappella is as well at ease in folk music arrangements from Sweden or Africa as in fresh choral music of highest quality. Many compositions have been made directly for La Cappella, by among others Karin Rehnqvist. On the new CD, Like a Mighty Flame, La Cappella sings Nordic/Baltic music to poems about love and about the threats against love.

With a CD totally devoted to choral music by Johannes Brahms, the Swedish Chamber Choir (previously Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble) completes their trilogy with sacred and profane choral music. The two previous collections contain music by Benjamin Britten (FRCD-006) and Francis Poulenc (FRCD-030) respectively.

On "Geistlich und weltlich" you will hear Brahms' three great Motets and three of his profane vocal cycles: "All in careful interpretations and with rich dynamics. The most touching is the music by an aging Brahms towards the end of this CD" wrote P-G Bergfors in Göteborgs-Posten and gave it a 4 out of 5.

At some point in his life, Tomas Tranströmer supposedly faced a choice: music or poetry.
Indeed, it can certainly be said that he chose poetry, but that does not mean that he excluded music; on the contrary, it became an ever present force in his writings. As a source of inspiration and motif - particularly with regard to the magnificent portraits of composers Grieg, Balakirev, Schubert, Liszt - but also in his frequent references to music. And, maybe most importantly, through the influence on the poetical language, an influence that defies description. It is not conveyed by purely semantic means, but is sensed in the melodics, rhythmics and implied dynamics of the poems. Furthermore, acoustics in general play an extremely important role in Tranströmer's poetry. This is characterized by an attentively listening attitude - a kind of acoustics that paradoxically seems to include what the poet has called "the mute half of music". Ever since his first collection 17 Poems (17 dikter, 1954) you come across wordings that call forth a music inherent to all of nature/history/cosmos. "The bronzeage trumpet's outlawed note" is heard, tree roots sound like copper lures, out of the wintry dusk rises "a tremolo from hidden instruments". In a poem in The Wild Market-Square (Det vilda torget, 1983) the station hand's sledgehammer against the wheels of the train creates an unimaginably sonorous tone: "peal of cathedral bells, a sailingroundtheworld peal". In Transtömer, the immense, unconditional and universal tone seems to dwell inside silence. During an intermission in an organ concerto, it grows out of a silence where otherwise imperceptible sounds surface. A state ensues where a kind of acoustic chain reaction is being suggested, and finally everything is singing. With regard to the poem "Brief Pause in the Organ Recital" ("Kort paus i orgelkonserten", Det vilda torget) Staffan Bergsten keenly writes: "He resides enveloped in the cosmic order, in the quiet rooms of lifegiving nature and the slumbering spirit. During the intermission, when all is silent, he hears the beating of a pulse that is his own, Society's and the world's."
In Tranströmer's poetry there are many references to his own playing. In an early poem he describes how he is seated at the piano "after a dark day", and finds it a relief that "The keys are willing. Soft hammers strike." I have good reason to believe that Tomas Tranströmer, every day of his life, whenever possible, has spent time at the piano.
And in the last few years, he has often performed in public as a pianist, mainly playing music written expressly for him: piano pieces for the left hand - the illness that befell him in 1990 has not prevented him from playing; on the contrary, one gets the impression that playing the piano has become an even more important means of expression. And the music immanent in Tranströmer's poetry has inspired several composers, of which this record is a euphonious proof.

Time is Now, the successor of their first album Nordic Voices, contains a broad spectrum of favorites from the choir's repertoire. The time span is huge, covering music from the Renaissance to the present day, with compositions by Francisco Guerrero, Josef Rheinberger, James Taylor, Olle Lindberg, Susanne Rosenberg, among others. The conductor and artistic leader, Lone Larsen, has contributed with the title track Time is Now and also with some of the arrangements. The variety in the repertoire is a clear signum of Voces Nordicae.

Voces Nordicae has gained an international reputation as one of the most prominent choirs in Sweden. Part of this reputation is due to their successful appearances at special performances abroad and a number of awards at international choir festivals. As one of the foremost representatives of Swedish choral singing, Nordic Voices was invited to the ACDA's (American Choral Directors Association) national meeting in Miami, in Mars 2007. This is an honor that previously has been given to only three Swedish choirs, among these the Swedish Radio Choir and The Real Group.

The Chamber Choir Pro Musica has for decades been a powerful voice in the Swedish and international choral community. The choir is appreciated for their work with large contemporary works by, among others, the Russian composer Alfred Schnittke and Swiss Frank Martin.

Throughout the years, the Chamber Choir Pro Musica has received a large number of awards in international choir competitions. With their recordings for the Swedish Radio and for CD and their appearances in Swedish Television, the choir has been praised nationally as well as internationally.

Jan Yngwe, the conductor and artistic leader, works at the University in Gothenburg, the School of Stage and Music, as a professor in conducting choir and orchestra, as well as choral singing and orchestral playing. He is also the conductor for the school's chamber choir.

In 2004, Jan Yngwe was given one of the finest awards a Swedish choral conductor can receive; the Johannes Norrby Medal for "a successful and utterly qualified deed as choral conductor that has lasted for many years".

Image Tiden Far I Träden - Ett Requiem
Composer Anders Hultqvist found that some of the Swedish singer-songwriter Olle Adolphson's songs and poems in the collection Folia, in a natural way could be inserted into the traditional mass for the dead. In this requiem - Tiden far i träden - Hultqvist has consequently joined songs such as År (Years), Ge mig en dag (Give me a day) and Rim i juli (Poem in July) with old Gregorian melodies and self-penned material. The lyrics deal with the passing of time, mortality and remembrance, often with nature as a backdrop.

The piece is performed by the Rilke Ensemble from Göteborg with the chamber orchestra Musica Vitae from Växjö. Reciter is actress Kristina Adolphson.

In the suite Ge mig den kärlek som krävs (Give me the love) Anders Hultqvist has arranged six Olle Adolphson songs that centre around man's journey to love and maturity: Ro hemåt (Rowing homewards), Nu har jag fått den jag vill ha (Now I have my own true love), Marsch på Skeppsbron (A bridge walking tune), Blåst (Wind), Nu kommer kvällen (Dusk is falling) and Aria.

This suite is performed by wellknown vocalist Claes Janson, backed by the Rilke Ensemble and Musica Vitae.

In 2006 the Rilke Ensemble celebrates its 25th anniversary. In 2004 the ensemble was named Choir of the Year by Rikskonserter and FöreningsSparbanken.!

Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble was formed in 1997. Most of the 26 singers have a professional background in music, and several of them are working as musicians in and around Göteborg. The ensemble was named Choir of the Year 2006 by Rikskonserter.
During the last few years Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble has established itself as one of Sweden's most prominent choirs. By winning a number of competitions, both nationally and around Europe, it has consolidated its position as an ensemble with a high quality of sound and a particular depth of repertoire.
Sacré et Profane consists of choir music by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), with lyrics by great French poets such as Paul Eluard and Guillaume Apollinaire. Poulenc is perhaps primarily regarded as a composer of vocal works: solo songs, choir music, oratories and operas, music that he set to lyrics of a high literary quality. Simon Phipps Vocal Ensemble has previously made a recording of music by Benjamin Britten (FRCD 006). A third CD is in the making, and will include works by Johannes Brahms. These three records reflect the composers' interpretations of both sacred and secular lyrics. Thus their common designation "sacred and secular".

Concert organist Jan H Börjesson, who has a base
at the St Pauli church in Göteborg, plays late romantic organ music on the organ found at the parish church in Vinberg. This organ, which was built at the turn of the last century by Kaspar Thorsell and Erik Henrik Erikson, is regarded as one of western Sweden's finest organs of its kind.
This CD features music by Sigfrid Karg- Elert, Felix Mendelssohn, John Morén, John Stainer, David Wikander, and Otto Olsson, whose piece "Liten orgelfantasi" ("Small Fantasy for the Organ") is presented here for the first time.

A Brittish Style Choir from Gothenburg
Simon Phipps Vocal ensemble is regarded one of the foremost choirs in the city and region of Gothenburg, which offers immense competition in choral singing. The ensemble was formed in 1997 and its agenda was to perform music from a repertoire as wide and varied as possible.

First CD dedicated to Benjamin Britten
In its first CD-release, the Simon Phipps Vocal ensemble performs music written entirely by the greatest English 20:th century composer, Benjamin Britten. This is a tribute to the composer whose music influenced Simon Phipps already at an early age; his father was Britten's agent.

Britten's immensely rich and varied choral production is reflected on this CD that spans from beauty to drama. The CD contains some of the composer's most acknowledged compositions like A Hymn to the Virgin, Five Flower Songs and Hymn to Saint Cecilia, as well as the great suit Sacred and Profane with its vibrating vocals and racy medieval lyrics. The choir was founded by Anders Eby in 1972 and has since then become one of the leading choirs in Stockholm. Anders Eby is the professor of choral conducting and choral singing at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. We are equally proud to present a CD containing a composition that rarely - if ever - has been heard on CD: The work Maria by the Dutch composer Henk Badings. This "Maira cyclus" is a 14 piece composition, based on texts about Virgin Mary, originating from different writers, such as Weber, Oelerich, O zur Linde and Rilke. It is written for soloists, choir, flute and violoncello.

Music-lovers are by now familiar with the Tenebrae Lessons, the settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah sung throughout Catholic Europe on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings of Holy Week. The Renaissance had delighted in them, and France under Louis XIV was to cultivate the genre to excess. In Italy, the fashion for Lamentazioni belongs to the first half of the 17th century, as witness the 23 cycles of manuscript Q43 of the Museo musicale in Bologna, all by composers active in Rome at the time. Maria Cristina Kiehr and Concerto Soave revive the pleasures of sheer contrition to be had from singing words such as afflictio, dolor, and lamentatio . . .

This title was released for the first time in 2007.

Long overshadowed by the reputation of his Bohemian compatriots Smetana, Dvorák and Janácek, Bohuslav Martinu is at last enjoying his fair share of the limelight. Like Vivaldi, Pietro Antonio Locatelli was both an outstanding instrumentalist and an erudite composer. He dazzled the whole of Europe with his virtuoso skills from 1723 onwards. To be sure, his Concerti grossi owe a great deal to the model of Corelli – except that, in many respects, the disciple consistently outstrips the master. In 2010, celebrating the first 15 years of the monumental project undertaken by Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki to record all of Bach's church cantatas, BIS released a limited edition of the first forty discs in four boxed sets. The 55th and final volume of the BCJ series having been released in November 2013, and in response to numerous requests by collectors, we now follow this up with a fifth and final box, consisting of the remaining 15 volumes, in CD versions (as opposed to the original SACDs). As devised by Masaaki Suzuki in 1995, the series started with the cantatas composed in Mühlhausen 1707-08 and has proceeded largely chronologically. The present box set is made up of the final extant 53 cantatas from Leipzig (1726-1748), and include such cantatas as Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen (BWV 56), Ich habe genung (BWV 82) and perhaps the most famous of them all: Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme (BWV 140). An opportunity for collectors to complete their sets, thus, but also for the curious to acquire a large selection of Bach's mature masterpieces in the cantata genre, in performances which have received worldwide acclaim for their consistent excellence and superb sound ('A set for the ages', Fanfare), and for a quality best described by a reviewer in International Record Review: 'With Suzuki you can hear Bach's heart beat ...'

With his Saül, the Italian composer Flavio Testi (born in Florence in 1923) joins the select company of great musicians who have retold the eminently tragic story of the king of Israel and his tormented relationship with his son Jonathan and the shepherd David who will succeed to his throne. But unlike Handel, Charpentier and Nielsen, he has not based his work directly on the Bible, but on the highly personal drama by André Gide (1898). Camilla Tilling studied at the Academy of Music and Drama (University of Gothenburg) and graduated in 1998 from London's Royal College of Music. Almost immediately an international opera career was launched by her enormous success as Corinna in a new production of Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims at New York's City Opera. "Den öppna konflikten mellan Englands kung George I och hans son prinsen av Wales i början av 1700-talet resulterade bland annat i en tävlan om vem som kunde iscensätta de mest magnifika offentliga festerna. Till de mest berömda hörde festen på Themsen den 17 juli 1717 till vilken G?F Händel gjorde musiken - de tre sviter för blåsare och stråkar som går under namnet "Water music". Following the success of the Haydn set, Marc Minkowski and Musiciens du Louvre- Grenoble's fifth recording on Naïve is dedicated to Handel's popular Water Music suite, commissioned by King George I for a big "river party" that took place in July 1717.

Over the past years, they performed this program many times in concerts all over Europe. They recorded it for the first time for Naïve.

Water Music received influences from French, German and Italian musics, which explains its lively, colored, varied, dancing and popular character

To complement this program, Marc Minkowski chose to record the overture of the opera Rodrigo, composed by Handel for the Italian audience some years before. Everything, in this Florentine suite, seems to foreshadow the London festival!

The tuba is associated with numerous prejudices branding it as comical, clumsy and incapable of singing. Anyone who has heard Øystein Baadsvik play will know better, however, as witness reviews from his previous recordings: 'Baadsvik's playing combines sweetness with strength, intensity with perception' (International Record Review), he 'conjures a wonderfully mellifluous baritonal tone from his instrument' (MusicWeb International), and demonstrates 'a lissome fluency suggesting that anything a violin can do, a tuba can do too' (Daily Telegraph). In the hands of Baadsvik, the tuba also, according to the German magazine Clarino Print, displays 'a great wealth of colours': a chameleon among the instruments, then - as is Øystein Baadsvik, himself. The Norwegian brass virtuoso is equally at home in contemporary concertos with large symphony orchestras, in jazz-inspired combos with strings and piano, or - as here - with a full-blown military band. With the solid backing of the Fanfare Band of the Royal Netherlands Army, Baadsvik starts off with his own Did You Do?, in which he plays a distant and ancient 'relative' of the tuba, namely the Australian didgeridoo. Three single-movement concertos for tuba and wind band follow, by Robert Jager, Anna Baadsvik and Rob Goorhuis. The last two of these were made especially for this recording, something which also applies to the atmospheric arrangement of Minuano, a modern jazz standard by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays of the Pat Metheny Group. As may be suspected by its title, Maurice Hamers' award-winning composition Chameleon takes the tuba through some colourful changes, and the instrument makes a final twirl around the dance-floor in Bass in the Ballroom by Roy Newsome.

The dynamic collaboration between conductor Thomas Dausgaard and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra has been developing for 10 years and is increasingly recognized as one of the more interesting in the world of classical music. From the outset, Dausgaard and the SCO have been intent on exploring the outer limits of the chamber orchestra repertoire, and this disc - the first in a series entitled Opening Doors - is the fruit of these explorations. Schumann's symphonies were first programmed at the orchestra's Schumann festival in 1999, and have since become part of the repertoire that the SCO play on their international tours - to the BBC Proms, New York and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, to name but a few destinations. They will provide the backbone of the series, with additional repertoire by Dvoøák and Schubert to follow. In the liner notes to the present disc, Dausgaard explains that he wants to ‘open the doors into the possibility of hearing this music in a different way’ and tells of how his work with the SCO has helped him gain new insight into the music, even when conducting it with larger symphony orchestras.

The disc opens with the Second Symphony, described by Dausgaard as dominated by 'swings of mood: from being on top of the world to a sense of disintegration into the very heart of darkness.' It is coupled with Symphony No. 4, in the original version which was actually composed before No. 2. Dausgaard feels that this version, especially when played by a chamber orchestra, allows the musical substance to truly come to the fore: 'It was a revelation when we performed it for the first time.' Also including two rarely played overtures, which to Dausgaard communicate 'a sense of imminent disintegration – as though the heart is about to stop beating', this disc will no doubt prove a revelation to many others as well.

The familiar hymn 'Veni Emmanuel' is emblematic of the Advent season - a period of reflection upon the meaning of Christ's coming. Robert Schumann's three Sonatas for violin and piano were all composed between 1851 and 1853. They - especially No.3 - have to some extent suffered from the same neglect and incomprehension that has been the fate of other works from this period in the composer's life, only a few years before he died in a mental institution. During the same years a number of other works for the violin saw the light, including the Violin Concerto and the Fantasy for violin and orchestra. The concertante works were written for the violinist Joseph Joachim, but it may have been a letter from Ferdinand David, concert master of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, that provided the initial impulse to compose chamber works for the violin: 'I am uncommonly fond of your Fantasiestücke for piano and clarinet; why don't you write something for violin and piano? ... How splendid it would be if you could write something of that kind, that your wife and I could play for you.' Here the performers are Ulf Wallin and Roland Pöntinen, a team who recorded their first disc for BIS in 1991, and whose partnership has been described as 'masterfully cultivated ensemble playing' on website Wallin's credentials in Schumann must also be regarded as firmly established, after his recently released recording of the violin concerto, the Fantasy and the arrangement for violin of the cello concerto. The reviewer in Daily Telegraph found it 'hard to imagine more sympathetic and insightful performances of these wonderful pieces', and his colleague on the German website Klassik-Heute agreed, describing Wallin as 'violinistically brilliant and musically perceptive'

The Italian harpsichordist, Anna Paradiso, eceived her solo diplomas in piano with honors and in harpsichord with full marks, and she has won several piano-competitions in Italy. She went on studying harpsichord for Gordon Murray in Vienna. With an academic career in Italy, at the Oxford University and in Sweden, she finally resumed a successful career in music. She received a Master in harpsichord at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Mayumi Kamata and Ulf Söderberg. She also studied Italian Baroque music and basso continuo at the Conservatorio "Cimarosa" in Avellino (Italy) with Enrico Baiano (Cappella della Pietà dei Turchini, Naples). At the same time, she had lessons on French music with Christophe Rousset in Paris. She also played for Ton Koopman in a master-class. Parallel to this, Anna Paradiso has being studying the original sources on basso continuo - with particular attention to the Italian ones - and has undertook an in-depth research on original fingerings applied to historically informed-practice. She aqlso holds a PhD in classical Latin poetry.

In their exploration of the symphonic repertoire of the Romantic era, Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra have previously recorded Bruckner, Tchaikovsky and most recently Brahms, in performances described as 'exhilarating' (The Observer) and 'stirring' ( As they take on the music by another archetypal nineteenth-century composer, Richard Wagner, they are joined by one of today's foremost Wagner singers. Named 'Singer of the Year' by the magazine Opernwelt in 2012, Nina Stemme has been the Isolde of choice at Glyndebourne, Bayreuth and Covent Garden. She here performs the five Wesendonck Songs - of which two in particular, Im Treibhaus and Träume, were referred to by their composer as 'studies' for Tristan and Isolde. Wagner himself prepared a version for violin and orchestra of Träume, which the conductor Felix Mottl incorporated when, supervised by the composer, he made an orchestration of the set. These songs to texts by Mathilde Wesendonck, Wagner's muse during the 1850s, are framed by two versions of the overture to The Flying Dutchman, the rarely heard 1841 original version and the composer's final creation from 1860, with its new ending inspired by Tristan, composed three years earlier. Concerning his revisions, Wagner wrote to Mathilde: 'Now that I have composed Isolde's last transfiguration, I could at last find the right close for this Fliegender-Holländer overture'. Included is also the Siegfried Idyll, composed in 1870 as one of Wagner's few purely orchestral works. It is known by this title because it was presented as a gift to Cosima Wagner, who had recently given birth to the couple's son Siegfried, but also because it uses themes from the opera Siegfried, which was then nearing completion. Closing the disc is the stately prelude to another opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, in which Wagner with a spectacular use of counterpoint - 'applied Bach' was his own description - aspires to express the idea of a reconciliation between artistic freedom and respect for tradition.

Image Concertos for Two and Three Pianos
There is only a limited number of works for two or more solo instruments with orchestra. One reason may be that the concerto genre in the 19th century became the stomping ground of the great virtuosi of the day, and the works themselves vehicles for the great and unique talent of one, special performer – not two, or three. Mozart, however, was evidently attracted by the sinfonia concertante genre and created some of the finest examples of it, such as the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola and the Concerto for Flute and Harp, as well as his two concertos for more than one piano. The ‘Lodron Concerto’ for three pianos was composed in 1776 for Countess Lodron and her daughters. It is Mozart’s third piano concerto and the young man’s irrepressible sense of fun is obvious: in his liner notes conductor and pianist Manfred Huss calls the concerto ‘a true musical joke, in which the musical line is divided between the three players quite arbitrarily; one piano continues what another has started and the third will conclude. The listener hardly notices the humour, however, as the music sounds quite “normal”, and only the pianists know (and the score shows) what Mozart is up to.’ When the composer three years later returns to the task of writing for more than one piano, the result is quite different. The Concerto in E flat major KV 365, composed for Mozart himself and his sister Nannerl, is according to Huss ‘in many respects Mozart’s first ‘big’ piano concerto. It is the first in which we find the very characteristic intertwining of the woodwind and the piano part, accomplished very effectively and virtuosically.’ Mozart seems to have been fond of the work, so fond that for a later performance he added clarinets, trumpets and timpani to the orchestra. Both versions of the score are found on the present recording, played by Alexei Lubimov and Ronald Brautigam, two of today’s finest performers on the fortepiano. The two versions frame the triple concerto, in which Lubimov and Brautigam are joined by Manfred Huss, artistic director of the eminent Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, who here make their first appearance on BIS.

The First World War marked an entire generation of composers, both in England and on the continent. Of the three composers represented here, George Butterworth was killed on the Somme in 1916, while Ralph Vaughan Williams, who damaged his hearing while commanding an artillery battery, survived, but with memories that would colour many of his post-war masterpieces. Ivor Gurney, finally, also survived, but with a seriously aggravated bipolar disorder that would lead to his spending the last 15 years of his life in a mental hospital. While Butterworth composed his two song cycles some five years before the outbreak of the war, the collection of poems that he chose his texts from - A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad - was striking a resonant contemporary note with its numerous poems dealing with ill-starred young men facing death. Even earlier, in 1904, Vaughan Williams had turned to poems by Robert Louis Stevenson, for his Songs of Travel, a set of nine songs in which the wanderer-narrator philosophically accepts the mixture of joys and sorrows that are offered to him along the road. Gurney - the youngest of the three composers - was also a poet, and in Severn Meadows expressed his longing for home in both text and music. Along with In Flanders, Even such is time and By a bierside - ending with the words of the album's title - Severn Meadows was composed during Gurney's time in the trenches, before exposure to poison gas in September 1917 caused him to be returned to England. Interpreting these highly expressive songs is James Rutherford, who has risen to fame as a Wagnerian singer, with Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger) at Bayreuth among his credentials, but who reserves a special place in his repertoire for English 20th-century song. On his first recording for BIS he appears with his regular collaborator Eugene Asti at the piano.

Clara and Robert. These two began their relationship as young lovers facing parental disapproval, marrying just before Clara's 21st birthday in 1840. During their years together they both pursued careers in music as well as raising seven children, all of this ending in 1854 when Robert entered an asylum for the insane, dying there two years later. The year of their wedding is often called Schumann's Liederjahr; during this 'year of song' he composed more than 150 songs, and his wedding gift to Clara was in fact a song cycle, Myrthen, Op. 25. Sixteen songs dated 1840 can be found here, including the Frauenliebe und Leben cycle, the crowning achievement of the year. But Robert also encouraged Clara to write songs and in 1841 they jointly published a collection entitled The Spring of Love. Clara had composed three of the songs (the 3 Lieder, Op. 3) and Robert the remaining nine, including Der Himmel hat eine Träne geweint, but at the first publication the authorship of the individual songs was left unspecified. As Clara would become aware, however, it was far more acceptable for a woman to perform music than to write it. At the age of 34 she stopped composing, but not before she had written further songs. Four of these can be found here, as can Robert's final song cycle, composed in 1852 and focussing on the life and tragic end of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

Animating these varied and various portraits, Miah Persson is increasingly in demand as a recitalist, parallel to her highly successful career in opera. Performing regularly with Joseph Breinl, she gives recitals in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw. For BIS she has previously recorded a collection of Mozart arias which caused reviewers to praise her voice ('has a silvery purity that does not preclude sensuality and warmth', Sunday Times) as well as her approach ('Here nothing is contrived; it is sung with one ear listening to the heart...' Diapason).

Before coming to Sweden, the Italian-born harpsichordist Anna Paradiso knew little about Johan Helmich Roman, often called 'the father of Swedish music'. Here she soon realized that if Roman's music was Swedish, it was also Italian - and specifically Neapolitan, her own part of Italy: the restlessness of the harmonic idiom, the continuous shifts from one melodic gesture to another, the absence of long and balanced phrases, the theatrical character. Roman had spent five years in London as a young man before returning to Stockholm to take up his duties at the Royal Court. Fourteen years later, 1735-37, he was once more able to sample the newest trends in music in person, during a two-year sabbatical spent travelling across Europe, with Ischia, near Naples, as his goal. It would seem that many, or most, of the twelve keyboard sonatas were composed around this time or later. Why he wrote them is not known, however, nor what instrument they were intended for. In 1746, shortly after he had retired, Roman assembled the pieces, each consisting of between three and seven movements, in a single manuscript. They remained unpublished, however, and as Roman did not provide any titles to them, they have since been referred to both as 'suites' and 'sonatas'. Whatever the label, this fascinating collection is a testimony of a period of great stylistic diversity and change, as observed by a composer who, although geographically relegated to the outskirts of Europe, remained wide-open to new developments. On this, the first of two discs, Anna Paradiso emphasizes this aspect of the composer, performing the first seven sonatas of the set on three different instruments - a French and an Italian harpsichord and a copy of a clavichord built in Sweden in 1742 - with well-judged ornamentations and use of rubato.

Pinturas de Tamayo is the result of American composer Steven Stucky's encounter with the art of the Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo. Initially struck by the painting 'The Great Galaxy' - reproduced on the cover of this CD - he chose this and four other paintings as his points of departure for a five-movement suite, which although it is far from pictorial certainly offers as much colour and poetry as the paintings themselves. In Spirit Voices for percussion and orchestra, Stucky has instead explored mythical beings from around the world, including Coyote, the trickster god of the Navajo Indians, mountain goblins of Japanese folk culture, and the Scottish bean nighe, a female wraith portending death. Written for the performers on this disc, the score consists of seven movements in which the percussionist sometimes plays a soloistic role, and in others is integrated into the orchestra. Closing the disc is Stucky's Second Concerto for Orchestra for which he received the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Music. It was written for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, a team that Stucky worked closely with over a long period of time. While the Concerto is not based on any extra-musical images, it is very much a result of this collaboration, which Stucky signals both with musical references and in the title of the first movement: 'Overture (with Friends)'. The present recording is the first of all of these works, and was made in the presence of the composer. Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui have appeared on a number of highly acclaimed discs for BIS, most recently a performance of Rachmaninov's Second Symphony which caused the reviewers to describe the orchestra as 'wonderful' (, 'world-class' (International Record Review) and 'sensational' (Scherzo). A previous collaboration between the orchestra and the celebrated percussionist Evelyn Glennie entitled Oriental Landscapes contains three works for percussion and orchestra described by one reviewer as 'ideal vehicles for Glennie's familiarly faultless musicianship.'

Recordings of the music of Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg (1887-1974) have been welcomed eagerly by reviewers during the past decade. Among the phrases used to describe it are ‘heart-warming’, ‘life-affirming’, ‘luscious, tuneful, evocative’ and highly impressive in terms of ‘the composer's consistently imaginative melodic invention and powerfully effective orchestration.’ The highly productive composer – nine symphonies! – was an unapologetic defender of the values of the German Romantic tradition as exemplified by Brahms, and it is not surprising that his music suffered an extended period of neglect during the long reign of more Modernist ideals. On this disc his rarely heard cello concerto – of which he himself played the solo part at the Swedish première in 1923 – has found a congenial advocate in Truls Mørk, one of today’s leading cellists. Beginning with an expansive opening address in the cello, the narrative flows seamlessly through the three movements, played attacca.

As the companion piece for the concerto Kristjan Järvi and the Symphony Orchestra of NorrlandsOperan – whose principal conductor Järvi was during the years 2000-2004 – have chosen Atterberg’s version for string orchestra of Brahms&rsquo string sextet in G major, Op. 36. In the spirit of Mahler for instance, this expansion of Brahms’ original score (in itself almost orchestral in conception and scale) into a ‘String Symphony’ may be seen as a testimony of Atterberg’s great respect both for Brahms and for a tradition whose gradual demise he regretted having to witness.

After finishing the chorus 'How dark, O Lord, are thy decrees' in February 1751, Handel noted in the autograph score that he couldn't continue his work on Jephtha because of eye problems. Later in the year, he regained his eyesight and was able to complete the work in the autumn. The problems returned however, and in January 1753 a London newspaper reported that 'Mr Handel has at length, unhappily, quite lost his sight'. Jephtha was thus to become Handel's last oratorio, and indeed his last major work. It is nevertheless no less a masterpiece than his earlier works, and contains some of his noblest music. The plot of this 'Sacred Drama' is loosely based on the story of Jephtha in the Old Testament: a father who in order to win the the Israelites' struggle against the Ammonites makes a rash promise to God, and after his victory is compelled to sacrifice his own daughter. The situation gives rise to music of touching poignancy, as well as great choral set-pieces. This rousing live performance, recorded in 2008 in the Stavanger Concert Hall, boasts a roster of soloists headed by the fine British tenor James Gilchrist as Jephtha, as well as the eminent Belgian choir Collegium Vocale Gent, all backed up by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. At the helm of these large forces is Fabio Biondi, the Baroque violinist and conductor who since 2005 has been artistic director of the Stavanger orchestra in the baroque and classical repertoires.

This latest album from Westminster Abbey is a programme of memorial music composed in England and France in the shadow of two World Wars.The main feature is Duruflé's Requiem, one of the best-loved of all works of the twentieth century, and given an astoundingly beautiful performance here, enhanced by distinguished soloists Christine Rice and Roderick Williams. The Requiem is many ways a paradoxical work, based on plainsong but with Durufle's sensuous harmonies suffusing every note with feeling: 'This Requiem is not an ethereal work which sings of detachment from human concerns', he said. 'It reflects, in the unchanging form of Christian prayer, the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.' It is a work of unimpeachable integrity, a miraculous synthesis of the old and the new.

During the 1910's, at a time when late-romanticism had been taken about as far as possible, the collaboration between Igor Stravinsky and the ballet impressario Sergei Diaghilev had a huge influence on the development of music. Performed by Diaghilev's company Les Ballets Russes, their first joint effort, The Firebird, was a great success in Paris in 1910, and within the space of just a couple of years two further landmarks of twentieth-century music followed: Pétrouchka and Le Sacre du printemps. Stravinsky's clear-cut textures, strong primary colours and almost percussive treatment of the orchestra staked out a route later explored by many of his colleagues. Particularly striking in the case of Pétrouchka was the extensive use of scraps of folk song and street music, treated with extreme refinement and often biting irony - the character of Petrushka, a puppet come to life, was described by Stravinsky as 'the immortal and unhappy hero of every fair-ground in all countries'. On the present recording the original 1911 version is used, giving an even more immediate and exciting effect. As for The Rite of Spring, the scandal at its 1913 premiere has become legendary - a scandal probably caused as much by Nijinsky's choreography as by Stravinsky's score. But even today, the music offers an extremely powerful experience, above all through its rhythmic qualities. Static rhythms, repeated for long stretches, generate enormous latent energy and are contrasted with irregular rhythms that change at bewildering speed. Both scores belong to the pinnacles of 20th-century orchestral music, and are here performed by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by its music director Andrew Litton. Most recently this team have released a highly praised cycle of Mendelssohn's symphonies, but their Russian credentials are also impeccable, with their recording of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Suites being described as 'glittering, colourful, spirited ... and with a striking attention to detail' on the website Klassik-Heute.

Jorge Grundman uses his unique compositional voice to create music which, above all, communicates with remarkable directness. The simplicity and strength of his artistic vision, intended to reach the widest audience possible, is clear in A Mortuis Resurgere, a work here receiving its premiere recording. Scored for soprano and string quartet, A Mortuis Resurgere sets passages from chapters XIX and XX of St John's Gospel telling the story of the resurrection of Christ.

Throughout its extended single movement the soprano soloist is required to use a wide range of expressive vocal techniques to communicate the meaning of the Latin text. Supporting the soprano voice is the string quartet, its slowly changing harmonies animated by a surface of rapid rhythmic figurations, all of which combine to produce shifting textures. The contemplative modal-based harmonies are typical of Grundman's style and form a part of his artistic vision to bridge the gap between pop and classical music.

Joining the Brodsky Quartet is the Spanish soprano Susana Cordón, for whom the challenging vocal part was written. Renowned for its diverse and pioneering collaborations, the Brodsky Quartet has been vital in the development of Grundman's style, having worked closely with the composer on a number of his earlier works.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra / Edward Gardner

Edward Gardner and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform three great orchestral works by Béla Bartók in this new Chandos release. Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta is a seminal work written for a unique ensemble consisting two string orchestras, playing from opposite sides of the stage, and a group of percussion instruments in addition to the piano, harp, and celesta. The piece took on wider recognition when it was used by Stanley Kubrick on the soundtrack of The Shining. Also on this disc is the Suite from Bartók's dark and gritty ballet The Miraculous Mandarin. The work, featuring some of the most colourful music Bartók wrote, tells the story of three criminals who force a young woman to lure passers-by into a room where they intend to rob them. The third passer-by to enter the room is the mandarin. The men try to kill him, but only when the girl satisfies his desire do his wounds begin to bleed, and he dies. The Four Orchestral Pieces, drafted in 1912, but not orchestrated until 1921, were written at a time when Bartók felt both misunderstood and ignored and had withdrawn from musical life in Budapest. These feelings of rejection may well have intensified the anger and cynicism found in this work.

Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Neeme Järvi

Back in 2010, Neeme Järvi commenced his Scandinavian project with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, offering up idiomatic performances of orchestral works by two of Norway's best-loved composers, Johan Halvorsen and Johan Svendsen. Similar in its approach, this new survey turns to Norway's neighbouring country, with Järvi conducting the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in orchestral works by the Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg.

Atterberg was one of Sweden's leading composers in the twentieth century, not to mention a conductor, critic, and founder of the Society of Swedish Composers. Largely self-taught, he developed a compositional style which initially owed much to Brahms and Alfvén, although he was more inclined to paint vivid, loosely structured melodic pictures than to adhere to the traditional classical frameworks. Tuneful, accessible, and fairly folkloristic too, Atterberg's music became more impressionistic by World War I, and it was around this time that he composed most of the works on this CD.

With his Seventh Symphony, Dvorák had proved that he could compose a 'respectable' symphony (as he himself termed it), and had done so to both critical and public acclaim. Four years later, when he began to work on its successor, he apparently felt free to return to a more familiar idiom, and after the serious Seventh - which Dvorák at one stage had considered giving the nickname 'Tragic' - Symphony No.8 was a lighter work, with its roots firmly planted in the composer's beloved Czech folk¬lore. It is probably the freest of his mature symphonies from a formal point of view, and has interesting parallels with Mahler's First Symphony, which was premièred shortly after Dvorák had completed his own work. Imitations of the sounds of nature, pas¬toral subjects and fanfares feature in both symphonies, and both evoke a funeral march and a chorale. The work is here coupled with the symphonic poem The Golden Spinning Wheel, based on an epic poem by the Czech poet Karel Erben. Complete with a wicked stepmother, a dismembering and a magic spinning wheel of gold, this rather cruel fairy-tale is followed by the shorter Scherzo capriccioso. This consistently light-hearted piece was actually composed during one of the darkest periods of Dvorák's life following the death of his mother in 1882. All of the other works written at this time - including Symphony No.7 - are characterized by a dark, even tragic mood and it is as if Dvorák in this Scherzo felt the need to once again express unrestrained joy. Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra have just released their performance of Symphony No.7 - a recording which has received top marks ('10/10') on the website Classics Today France, whose reviewer described it as 'a striking disc' offering 'a revitalized vision of these major orchestral works'.

The first recording by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra for BIS centred on Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique, a work which stands squarely on the threshold between Classicism and Romanticism. Nézet-Séguin's interpretation brilliantly demonstrated this ambivalence, as the reviewer in CD Review on BBC Radio 3 remarked: 'A Fantastic Symphony that relishes in the transparency and the delicacy of Berlioz's scoring while remaining true to its vivid imagination and dramatic punch'. On the follow-up to that exciting release is another work that straddles a musical divide, namely Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs. Composed in 1948, these late blooms of an unabashed Romanticism stood in the midst of a musical landscape which featured the twelve-tone serialism of the Darmstadt School, John Cage's prepared piano and the first examples of musique concrète. In accordance with Strauss's wish, it was the dramatic soprano Kirsten Flagstad who first performed the songs, but they also became closely associated with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. On the present recording, it is Dorothea Röschmann, one of today's foremost Mozart sopranos who lends her voice to what is often regarded as an expression of the composer's acceptance of death's inevitability, at the age of eighty-four. We meet Strauss in a completely different mood in the disc's opening work - the large-scale symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life) composed fifty years before the songs. By casting himself in the role of the Hero, Strauss managed to provoke generations of music-lovers for years to come. A study of aggressive egotism, the work has been called, as well as the most conceited piece of music ever written. But it is also widely regarded as one of the most brilliant, and virtuosic, orchestral scores in the history of music, displaying the possibilities of a large symphony orchestra to the fullest.

The momentous importance of Franz Schubert for the Lied genre has been compared to that of Shakespeare for the theatre - the same kind of instinctive and inexplicable genius, appearing without forewarning, unparalleled in its own era and never surpassed by later exponents. At the age of 17 he composed Gretchen am Spinnrade, often described as a milestone in the history of vocal music, and the more than 600 songs that followed it form an entire universe of emotions, atmospheres and moods - from the touching, utterly convincing portrayals of the joy and despair of young love in Bei dir allein! and Lied des Florio, to the almost Gothic drama of Der Zwerg and the utter despondency of Totengräbers Heimweh. This programme also includes some of Schubert's best-known songs, such as the carefree An Silvia, the serene Litanei, and the first Suleika song, regarded by Johannes Brahms as the most beautiful of all Lieder. Besides having a highly successful career in opera, the Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling has made a name for herself in concert and recital, and her previous recording for BIS - the Strauss recital Rote Rosen - was highly regarded on its release in 2010: 'The luminous and lyrical soprano of Camilla Tilling, which keeps its beautiful bloom even in the top register, is a pure joy for the ear' wrote the critic in Fono Forum, while his colleague in International Record Review praised her 'rounded golden tone' and her 'ability to float a vocal line that seems to hang effortlessly on the air demanding that time itself should stop.' As on that disc, she is supported by the eminent pianist and chamber musician Paul Rivinius.

The oratorio To Be Certain of the Dawn was commissioned by a Catholic body - the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis - as a gift to the Jewish community, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the freeing of Holocaust survivors and to help teach an important lesson: the prevention of future genocide is in the hands of today's children. In creating the work, composer Stephen Paulus and librettist Michael Dennis Browne have emphasized the victimization of innocent children, and a children's choir plays an important part in the score. This aspect was further underscored at the first performance in 2005 by the projection of photographs from 1935-1938 of Jewish children living in cities and villages in Eastern Europe. The highly moving work, which raises eternal questions regarding humanity, tolerance and respect, became a labour of love for Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, as well as the other musicians involved in the first performance, many of whom also participated in the present recording. The oratorio has subsequently been performed by student forces in the USA who have also taken it to Germany, Switzerland and a former concentration camp, Natzweiler-Struthof, in France. Stephen Paulus, a prolific Minnesota-based composer, has received commissions from orchestras and institutions such as the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Washington Opera and Los Angeles Master Chorale. His close collaboration with librettist Michael Dennis Browne on To be Certain of the Dawn is a continuation of a creative partnership of long standing which has also produced, among other works, the operas The Village Singer, Harmoonia and The Three Hermits.

On this new CD award-winning French pianist Laurent Cabasso performs two great masterpieces of the nineteenth century, Beethoven's 33 Variations on a Theme by Diabelli, and Franz Schubert's 'Wanderer' Fantasy.

After studying with amongst others the great piano teacher and former pupil of Artur Schnabel, Maria Curcio-Diamand, Laurent Cabasso went on to win awards at several international competitions including the Geza Anda Prize in Zurich in 1982, and the Clara Haskil Competition in Vevey in 1987. Since then he has developed into a major international soloist and gives regular recitals and concerts in such centres as the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and the Festspielhaus in Zurich. He has performed as soloist with all the major French orchestras, as well as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande with conductors including Charles Dutoit, Serge Baudo, Emmanuel Krivine, and Michel Plasson. He also appears regularly with some of today's finest musicians, including Sonia Wieder-Atherton and the Rosamunde and Enesco quartets.

Laurent Cabasso was chosen by the Festival Chopin in Paris as one of the ten pianists who combined to perform the complete cycle of Chopin's works given to mark the composer's bicentenary celebration held in Chateauroux and Paris in 2010.

His solo recordings to date include CDs devoted to the music of Schumann, Prokofiev, and Beethoven the latter being chosen by Le Monde as one of the best CDs of the year. Recent distinctions have included a Diapason d'Or for a Liszt recording with the organist Olivier Vernet.

Berio had an abiding fascination with reconciling the past and the present, which can be seen in his orchestral realisations of works by Mahler and Brahms, and most notably, in Rendering (1990), his typically creative completion of unfinished symphonic sketches by Schubert.

In Rendering, Berio - in his own words - sets himself the target of 'following those modern restoration criteria that aim at reviving the old colours without, however, trying to disguise the damage that time has caused, often leaving inevitable empty patches in the composition'. In the 'restoration', Schubert's sketches have been beautifully orchestrated in period style, and the 'empty patches' have been filled with music composed by Berio himself, in his own voice - thereby successfully combining the musical worlds of the early nineteenth and late twentieth centuries into one convincing whole.

The Clarinet Sonata by Brahms embodies the composer's taut and concentrated compositional style. In transcribing the work, Berio felt that, when experienced in the less intimate surroundings of today's concert halls, the extreme compression of Brahms's late chamber music style was in need of some additional support, and his version, recorded here, includes a fourteen-bar orchestral introduction to the first movement, leading into Brahms's own, much shorter opening phrase, as well as five additional bars at the beginning of the second movement.

Berio completed his orchestration of six early songs by Gustav Mahler in 1987, and conducted the first performance with the Toscanini Orchestra on 7 December that year, with Thomas Hampson the baritone soloist. The six songs in this orchestrated set are 'Hans und Grete', 'Phantasie', 'Scheiden und Meiden', 'Erinnerung', 'Frühlingsmorgen', and 'Ich ging mit Lust durch einen grünen Wald'.

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Edward Gardner, with Roderick Williams the baritone soloist in the songs by Mahler and Michael Collins the soloist in Brahms's Clarinet Sonata.

Paul Watkins and Ian Brown here give well-modulated performances of the two Brahms cello sonatas. Cello and piano are finely balanced in timbre, spontaneously complementary in their reactions to the music and effective in combining intricacy of texture with broader aspects of lyricism. This is nowhere more evident than in the finale of the E minor Sonata, where the oscillation between toughness and tenderness is dealt with in a way that preserves the music's essential momentum but at the same time leaves space for reflection. The passionate opening of the F major Sonata launches a performance that, as in the E minor, conveys a very real sense of the music s emotional make-up, ebbing and flowing as its contours demand and finding a spectrum of dynamic shading that is entirely apt. The disc would be well worth having for these two works alone, but in between them there is an equally beguiling performance, with Michael Collins, of the Clarinet Trio. Collins, Watkins and Brown play as a proper, instinctive ensemble, well tailored in phrasing, unanimous in their attack and architectural finesse, and mellifluous in their shaping of Brahms's melodic and harmonic richness. **** --Telegraph, July'14

'Each instrument is primus inter pares, every note is significant ...' is how the scholar Alfred Einstein described W.A. Mozart's Divertimento in E flat major for string trio. What other work could then be more suitable for the first disc of a star-studded ensemble such as Trio Zimmermann, in which each member is very definitely first among equals? Composed in the same year as the three final symphonies, Mozart's only real trio for violin, viola and cello is a weighty work - six movements and close to 50 glorious minutes of music - and the fact that Mozart chose the title Divertimento (from the Italian divertire: to amuse) for a piece of these dimensions has often been remarked upon. But to Mozart, there was no real dividing line between 'serious' art and pleasure or amusement - and so, to quote Einstein once more, he gave us 'the most perfect, finest thing that has ever been heard in this world'. To round off the disc, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Antoine Tamestit and Christian Poltéra have chosen to record Franz Schubert's first contribution to the string trio genre, the opening - and only complete - movement (Allegro) of his String Trio in B flat major, D 471, written in 1816 when the composer was only nineteen.

This '2for1' reissue brings together the best performances by Neeme Järvi of the music by Bartók, taken from his extraordinarily prolific recording career with Chandos Records.The Concerto for Orchestra has remained one of Bartók's most popular orchestral works since its triumphant premiere in 1944. Its title signals that each section of instruments is treated in a soloistic and virtuoso way. The ballet The Miraculous Mandarin is heard here in its complete form. Set in a seedy urban underworld, it tells the tale of a prostitute, the three thugs that control her, and their mysterious encounter with the eponymous Mandarin. In portraying this scenario Bartók creates an astonishingly vivid score with some of the most colourful music he ever wrote. The Wooden Prince, an earlier ballet, could not on the surface be further from The Miraculous Mandarin. Lacking its daring modernism, it instead shows the influence of Debussy, Strauss, and Wagner. However, its outwardly sunny character obscures a strange and surreal undertone. The Hungarian Pictures are skilful and imaginative orchestrations made in 1931 of five earlier piano pieces. Each with its own distinct character, these pieces give the impression of being an authentic folksong arrangement, although this is true only of the last of the five.

Image Symphony No. 2 (Lobgesang)
Completed in 1840, Mendelssohn's 'Lobgesang' Symphony is actually his fourth in order of composition, preceded by both the Italian (No.4) and the Reformation Symphony (No.5). It was composed to mark the 400th anniversary of Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. Instead of dealing with the subject of printing or Gutenberg's life, however, Mendelssohn chose to focus on the consequences of Gutenberg's achievement, presenting it as the victory of light over darkness. He originally planned the work as a 'smaller oratorio or larger hymn', then as a 'symphony for choir and orchestra', and finally - according to the title page of the published edition - as a 'symphony-cantata after words from the Holy Bible'. The work is made up of two main sections. The first, entitled 'Sinfonia', consists of three instrumental symphonic movements played without interruption, and the second is a cantata comprising nine movements. The whole, vocal and instrumental, springs from the same source, however: the words 'Alles, was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn' ('All that has life and breath, sing to the Lord') which open the cantata. As Mendelssohn put it in a letter 'first of all the instruments sing to Him in their own way, and thereafter the choir and the other voices'. The successful partnership of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton has made an impact on international audiences at high-profile appearances in London, Vienna and New York, as well as at the famous Bergen Festival. On disc, the team's interpretation of Prokofiev's music to Romeo and Juliet (on BIS-SACD-1301), has received high praise, for instance on German website where it was described it as 'glittering, colourful, fiery, with great presence and dynamic scope and an impressive attention to detail'. In their Hymn of Praise - the first of a cycle of Mendelssohn's symphonies - they are joined by a large choir, and a trio of soloists including the tenor Christoph Prégardien, giving an wrenching rendition of the highly expressive 'Wir riefen in der Finsternis' ('We called thro' the darkness').

The Rape of Lucretia was premiered in 1946 shortly after the overwhelming success of Peter Grimes. The work was Britten's first chamber opera, a genre which Britten now should turn to again and again. Despite the reduced funding (a few actors and a thirteen-member instrumental ensemble) the work offers the theatrically effective drama and high emotion with which the tragedy is converted to the desecration of Lucretia here. The British singers with star-studded, made ??in 1993, recording under the direction of Richard Hickox unforgotten is made here to midpriced accessible again.

The completely unknown Suite for piano and strings (1917), for its part, resembles a neoclassical pastiche.

The monumental Piano Sonata in D minor was composed by a young Benjamin Dale while he was still a student at the Royal Academy of Music. Dale's contemporaries included the burgeoning composer-pianists Arnold Bax and York Bowen. Dale dedicated the sonata to his close friend Bowen, who gave the premiere of the work at the Academy in February 1905 and astonished listeners with its daring structural originality and thematic integrity and its breathtaking tonal colours. The elaborate form encompasses an impressive amalgamation of the traditional slow movement, scherzo and finale into an inventive set of variations. Also featured are Dale's charming Prunella and Night Fancies in which Dale explores impressionistic colourings. Rather aptly, the final work on the disc is the first recording of York Bowen's Miniature Suite in C major, the Humoresque of which is dedicated reciprocally to Dale. His expressive sensibility and remarkable dexterity make young British pianist Danny Driver the ideal advocate for this repertoire. His landmark interpretations of the Bowen Sonatas were met with huge critical acclaim and Driver performs this incredibly virtuosic music with apparent ease, passion and lyricism. This disc of eclectic and intricate piano music will surely enhance his reputation as one of Britain's finest pianists.

'Some of the most striking and moving singing put down on disc for years' is how White Night, the previous release with the Norwegian Soloists' Choir and its conductor Grete Pedersen, was described on the website of Gramophone. Having focused on music from their home country before, the team here presents a German programme, featuring two of the most influential composers in 19th-century choral music: Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert. It includes both sacred and secular music, scored for male, female and mixed choir a cappella and accompanied, starting with a selection from Brahms' deservedly popular Zigeunerlieder for mixed choir and piano. A contrast to these settings of Hungarian folk songs is provided by the autumnal Five Songs for mixed choir a cappella - a collection of poems dealing with the transience of youth, love and life, which in many respects presents a masterful distillation of Brahms' choral output. From an earlier part of the composer's career come two sacred works for mixed choir, the motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen, showing Bach's influence on the composer, and Geistliches Lied, with organ accompaniment. Schubert is represented with a setting of Psalm 23 for women's choir and piano and Der Gesang der Geister über den Wassern to a poem by Goethe which Schubert chose to set several times. The version recorded here, numbered D714, is the last one. It has an unusual scoring for eight-part male choir and low strings which in 1821 perplexed the first audience, and which even today has a very special effect on the listener.

The French composer Nicolas Bacri has said that melody is the essence of all music; it is certainly an essential feature of these works, composed between 1995 and 2004. The programme mirrors Bacri's involvement with the melodic genre par excellence, the concerto: four of the works included are concertante works with one or two solo instruments in interplay with a small-scale orchestra. Concerto nostalgico 'L'automne' and Concerto amoroso 'Le printemps' - dedicated to Lisa Batiashvili and François Leleux, the soloists on this recording - form part of a projected 'Four Seasons' cycle, whereas the Flute Concerto - here interpreted by Sharon Bezaly - and the brief Nocturne for cello and strings, with soloist Riitta Pesola, stand on their own. But besides his many concertos, Bacri has also composed no less than six symphonies. Of these, Symphony No. 4 was commissioned to form part of a concert-cycle dedicated to 'Sturm und Drang' compositions of the late-Classical era. Bacri himself has described the process as 'putting myself "in the skin" of a composer of the Classical period'. He adds the following qualification: 'Even though I haven't been afraid to sketch the outlines of an aesthetic vocabulary of another time, I have also tried to present an emotional content arising from the musical pre-occupations I feel to be my own.' This highly accessible, colourful and melodic music is here interpreted by the Tapiola Sinfonietta under Jean-Jacques Kantorow, a team whose previous recordings on BIS have been enthusiastically received by the reviewers. A recent disc of works by Saint-Saëns was for instance described as 'a smorgasbord of distinctive orchestral colours' in Classic FM Magazine, while the German website discovered 'a truly magnificent orchestral sound - as flexible as it is transparent.'

With the exception of a few misguided Swedes, we all know that Santa Claus lives in Finland. So what could be more fitting than a disc of Finnish Christmas classics, in lavish orchestral arrangements performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, only 240 miles south of Santa's home in Rovaniemi. Just as the joyous season knows no boundaries, many of the favourite songs associated with the Finnish Christmas - or 'Joulu' - are international, and in the programme, hidden behind exotic-sounding titles, are Jingle bells as well as Rejoice, O Daughter of Zion from Handel's Messiah. But there are also local products on offer - the most well-known probably being Jean Sibelius's Christmas song 'Giv mig ej glans', which here is performed by Jukka Perko, the internationally known saxophonist who appears as soloist in four tracks on the disc. Other performers include the Lahti children's choir 'Laulupuu' and Riki Sorsa, one of Finland's most popular performers, who appears in the setting of the poem Tonttu (the Finnish name for Santa). All the arrangements are new - as indeed are a couple of the compositions themselves - and make full use of the eminent abilities of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, here conducted by Esa Heikkilä.

In this re-release, digitally remastered like all the other recordings this month, Richard Hickox conducts the City of London Sinfonia, the orchestra he founded in 1971, in works for strings by Herbert Howells. Howells is perhaps best known for his choral music but the works here demonstrate his profound love of the string sound. Beginning the disc is the highly personal Concerto, sketched shortly after the death of both Sir Edward Elgar and his only son, Michael Kendrick Howells. The central slow movement, in which Hickox 'finds an extra pain and subsequent meditative rapture' (Hi-Fi News), is the elegiac emotional heart of the work and bears the note, 'In memoriam, E.E. (1934) and M.K.H. (1935)'. The Elegy is another piece 'in memoriam', this time of a friend of Howells's, killed in the war. The final two works are somewhat lighter in tone. The four-movement Suite was written with the direct and vigorous tunefulness and rhythm of Holst's St Paul's Suite in mind and the Serenade is a short, delightful scherzo-like movement that demonstrates the brilliance of Howells's string technique. The release is a part of Chandos' Richard Hickox Legacy series, marking the late great conductor's contribution to the recording catalogue.

On five previous discs the astonishing tuba player Øystein Baadsvik has demonstrated his incredible versatility as a musician, while at the same time establishing that 'anything a violin can do, a tuba can do too', to quote a review in the Daily Telegraph of his first disc on BIS, Tuba Carnival. As Baadsvik writes in his own liner notes to the present disc: 'Every tuba player soon learns to live with people's "oompah-oompah" prejudices, but rarely have these been challenged more boldly than here. Never before has there been a Christmas record with symphony orchestra, women's choir and tuba!' The programme consists of lavish arrangements of Baadsvik's own international and Nordic Christmas favourites. As befits the season, the offering contains a few surprises as well - such as Eatnemen Vuelie, inspired by joik, the traditional singing of the Sami people, and a snowy version of Baadsvik's own piece Fnugg ('flakes'), with elements of beat-boxing as well as the sound of the Australian didgeridoo. With the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra lending the music all the variety and uplift that only a large orchestra can provide, and the glittering voices of the Cantus choir adding a festive glow, Baadsvik's tuba carries the day - atmospheric and joyous, tuneful and meditative by turns.
