NEW ON NAXOS

The July edition of NEW ON NAXOS celebrates the upcoming release of Claudio Monteverdi’s Complete Madrigals, in a special 15-disc boxed set, featuring the highly-acclaimed performances of Delitiæ Musicæ and Early Music scholar Marco Longhini. Praised as ‘compelling, simultaneously controlled and imaginative’ (American Record Guide), these recordings ‘belong to the best available’ according to MusicWeb International. The set also includes a selection of pieces never recorded before, as well as the Scherzi Musicali (‘Musical Jokes’) linked with the recurring theme of war for the sake of love - Release on the 24th of July

• Gioachino Rossini’s cantata Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo, recorded live from the 2018 Rossini in Wildbad Festival, conducted by Pietro Rizzo. The Górecki Chamber Choir, Kraków and the Virtuosi Brunensis accompany sopranos Eleonora Bellocci and Leonor Bonilla, mezzo-soprano Marina Comparato, and tenors Mert Süngü and Joshua Stewart.

NEW ON NAXOS

This is the June edition of NEW ON NAXOS. Our spotlight recording is Les Frivolités Parisiennes’s newest release of Jules Massenet’s rarely heard opera Don César de Bazan, conducted by Mathieu Romano. The performance features a superb group of soloists led by baritone Laurent Naouri, supported by the Ensemble Aedes and the Orchestre des Frivolités Parisiennes. This release is continuation of the company’s project of re-discovering gems of the French opéra comique repertoire. Their world premiere recording of Auber’s La Sirène (8.660436) has received critical acclaim including a nomination from the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA).

• The audiovisual release of Stefano Landi’s opera La morte d’Orfeo, which continues the narrative of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, recorded from the 2018 production of the Dutch National Opera directed by Pierre Audi. NEW ON NAXOS

The May issue of NEW ON NAXOS presents the audiovisual release of Toni Schmid’s film The State Opera, a documentary about the Bavarian State Opera – one of the world’s oldest, most prestigious and international esteemed companies. Featuring excerpts from recent productions of Wagner’s Die Meistersingers von Nurnberg, Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, the film also include interviews with opera stars Anja Harteros and Jonas Kaufmann, as well as current and former music directors Kirill Petrenko, Zubin Mehta and Ivor Bolton, as well as artistic directors Nikolaus Bachler and Sir Peter Jonas.

This month’s spotlight belongs to the audiovisual release of Henry Purcell’s King Arthur, featuring the critically acclaimed 2017 production from Staatsoper Berlin, directed by Sven-Eric Bechtolf and Julian Crouch. Sung in English with German dialogue, the performance was conducted by René Jacobs with a cast led by soprano Anett Fritsch and bass Johannes Weiser, with the Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. This month’s highlights:
• The newest recording by the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic, again performing American orchestral masterpieces, conducted by James Judd. The renowned British conductor lead the GRAMMY-nominated orchestra in outstanding interpretations of Aaron Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, Georges Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and Leonard Bernstein’s Songfest, with the Wolf Trap Opera company.
