NEW ON NAXOS

The February edition of NEW ON NAXOS commemorates Camille Saint-Saëns’s centennial with a one of its kind release, dedicated to the composer’s music for wind ensemble presented by Jun Märkl and the Band of the Royal Air Force College. The newest in Märkl’s recording series of Saint-Saëns’s music, the programme explores rarely heard works next to popular excerpts from The Carnival of the Animals and Samson et Dalila, among others.

Other highlights include:
• The musically and visually spectacular Opéra Comique production of Francesco Cavalli’s opera Ercole amante (‘Hercules in Love’), directed by the duo of Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq. Raphaël Pichon conducts his Ensemble Pygmalion, with a strong cast led by bass Nahuel di Pierro in the title role. The Opéra Comique's previous recordings of Ambroise Thomas' Hamlet and André Messager's Fortunio both won Diapason d'or awards.

NEW ON NAXOS

The first edition of NEW ON NAXOS for 2021 celebrates the audiovisual release of Opera Lafayette’s production of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Leonore. The original version of Fidelio, this performance, directed by Oriol Thomas and conducted by Ryan Brown, is the company’s first German opera production, and the centerpiece of Opera Lafayette’s 25th anniversary in 2019. The assembled cast is led by soprano Nathalie Paulin, with tenors Jean-Michel Richer and Keven Geddes, and bass-baritone Stephen Hagedus. Opera Lafayette’s 2017 modern premiere of Gaveaux’s Léonore, ou L’Amour conjugal was praised by Gramophone, describing it as ‘an enterprising and rewarding production’.

Other highlights include:
• The acclaimed 2019 Teatro dell’Opera di Roma production of Sergey Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel, staged by Emma Dante. Versatile conductor Alejo Pérez leads a strong cast starring soprano Ewa Vesin and baritone Leigh Melrose, with the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

NOVEMBER 2020

NEW ON NAXOS

The November edition of NEW ON NAXOS celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of French composer Florent Schmitt, with a collection of his poetic orchestral works presented by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor JoAnn Falletta. The GRAMMY-winning team performs the symphonic poem La Tragédie de Salomé and the exquisite Musique sur l’eau featuring mezzo-soprano Susan Platts, as well as the world premiere recording of Légende in its version for violin and orchestra, marking BPO concertmaster Nikki Chooi’s Naxos debut as soloist. Falletta and the BPO have previously recorded Schmitt’s Antony and Cleopatra suites, receiving 5-star ratings from Pizzicato: ‘Falletta succeeds extremely well in realizing the mixture of brilliance and sensuality which characterizes Schmitt’s music’; and Classical Music magazine: ‘this makes a fine introduction to a neglected composer.’

Other highlights include:
• Music for stage by Engelbert Humperdinck restored and conducted by Dario Salvi, wit ...
