I april fyller Ricercar 40 år. Skivmärket som grundades 1980 av Jérôme Lejeune är specialiserat på tidig musik från renässans och barock.

March NEW ON NAXOS presents the multi-award-winning Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds’ 21st-century choral sound is both exquisite and angular, and in this album he explores ideas of ‘translation,’ legend and the divine. With his expanded tonality and employment of shimmering singing hand bells in ‘Translation,’ and the angelic use of the viola and cello in ‘In paradisum’ he creates music of ravishing refinement. In ‘Legend of the Walled-In Woman’ Esenvalds transcribes and employs an authentic Albanian folk song.

• Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II: By the time of Emperor Joseph II’s death in 1790 Beethoven was a member of the court musical establishment in Bonn. The February NEW ON NAXOS continues to ‘Celebrate Beethoven’ with the world premiere recording of the narrated version of Ludwig van Beethoven’s The Ruins of Athens, presented by the world-renowned conductor Leif Segerstam and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. This new release features a quintet of outstanding speakers – Angela Eberlein, Roland Astor, Claus Obalski, Ernst Oder and Leah Sinka – joined by soprano Reetta Haavisto and bass Juha Kotilainen, and the Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis. This is the sixth instalment in Segerstam’s recording cycle of Beethoven’s large-scale works. The series has received critical acclaim, with the first two volumes (Christus am Ölberge and The Creatures of Prometheus) receiving International Classical Music Award 2020 nominations.

• Leif Segerstam’s latest recording in his Beethoven orchestral works series, leading the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of König Stephan, excerpts from Leonore Prohaska, Opeferlied and the patriotic song Germania. They are joined by a group of outstanding vocal soloists led by soprano Reetta Haavisto and bass Niklas Spångberg, with the Key Ensemble and Chorus Cathedralis Aboensis.

• The latest offering from the Rossini in Wildbad Festival, with a live recording of Gioachino Rossini’s Zelmira, conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti. Featuring soprano Silvia Dalla Benetta in the title role, this production also includes tenors Joshua Stewart and Mert Süngü, mezzo Marina Comparato, basses Federico Sacchi and Luca Dall’Amico, with the Górecki Chamber Choir, Kraków and Virtuosi Brunensis.
