Hespèrion XXI
Jordi Savall

Mare Nostrum (Latin for "Our Sea") was a Roman name for the Mediterranean Sea, an area that may be regarded as the greatest place of exchange and dialogue in the history of human kind. Of course, music is no exception. In this new lavishly illustrated CD book, Jordi Savall invites us to explore the myth of the Mediterranean Sea as mother of people and cultures, from Marocco to Israel, from Spain to Lebanon. The antique Greek illustration on the front cover underlines how far-reaching - in space and time - this project is.

La Capella Reial de Catalunya

The Borgia family originated fromValencia in Spain and became prominent during the Renaissance in Italy, especially when Rodrigo, a cunning intriguer, was elected Pope in 1492, taking the name Alexander VI. He had several acknowledged children, of which Lucrezia and Cesare were best known. The Borgias have been accused of many different crimes, generally on considerable evidence, including adultery, simony, theft, rape, bribery, incest, and murder (especially murder by arsenic poisoning. Cesare, with his father's backing, tried to become the ruler of Italy. But in 1503, Pope Alexander died suddenly. Cesare's intrigues collapsed, and he went off to Spain. Lucrezia was also rumored to be a notorious poisoner. She married three times, and after the fall of her father and brother, remained the respected consort of the Duke of Ferrara. Saint Francis Borgia was a grandson of Rodrigo through another son, Giovanni. After a career in the service of the kings of Spain, he entered the priesthood and became a Jesuit. He eventually rose to be the third Father General of the order.

HESPÉRION XXI / JORDI SAVALL

This release is mainly based on "The Book of Science of Music", published in 1710 by the Moldavian prince Dimitrie Cantemir, after many years spent in Istanbul. This unique manuscript enables us to discover the jewels of the Turkish traditional music. Jordi Savall already included some of its pieces in his album Orient Occident (AVSA9848), but he decided to explore it further in order to reveal the magic of the incredible city of Istanbul. This city portrait wouldn't have been complete without the fascinating Armenian and Sefarad repertoire that was also familiar in Istanbul during this time. Once again, Jordi Savall reminds us about a Golden Age of cultural dialogue, brought back to life by Hespèrion XXI and outstanding Turkish and Armenian guests musicians. Once again, this experience goes beyond music.

Hespèrion XXI
Jordi Savall

The first volume of Orient Occident - released in 2006 - turned out to be a landmark in Jordi Savall's discography : for the first time, the Maestro had explored an extra-European repertoire, demonstrating the same musicological expertise he had shown with composers like Marin Marais. This album soon became a best seller.

This is new opus is a focus on Syria, alternating instrumental and vocal pieces. Musicians from Syria, Lebanon and Israel play alongside Hespèrion XXI and illustrate the artistic and humanist process we have come to expect from Jordi Savall, a process more necessary than ever.

Le Concert des Nations / Jordi Savall

This double album is an invitation to explore the forces of nature, so vividly depicted by the composers at the turn of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.

With this stunning (and first) recording of Jean-Fery Rebel's Les Elements, Jordi Savall displays his unmatched vision of the baroque orchestral repertoire, proving that authenticity and timbral beauty aren't mutually exclusive.

New recordings of works by Locke, Vivaldi, Marais, Telemann and Rameau - a splendidly varied and expressively wide-ranging selection - is a welcome addition to the existing landmark recordings made by Savall in this repertoire.

Pellucid engineering complements the live performances perfectly, offering warmth without excessive resonance, and letting the players shine.

Hespèrion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya / Jordi Savall

Jordi Savall examines 500 years of Histo-ry in this portrait of a city that symbolizes like no other the fruitful and at the same time conflictual encounter of the three monotheistic religions. The succession of the zirid, almoravid, almohad and nas-rid dynasties, their relationship with the neighbouring christian kingdoms and the often precarious situation of the Jews (the first inhabitants of this area) are reflected in this wide musical fresco, in which each culture displays its most advanced refinement.
