Image Snowflakes in December

/Hannah Svensson

The critically acclaimed singer and songwriter Hannah Svensson releases a new album - this time
in the spirit of Christmas - in the company of a group of eminent Jazz musicians. Klas Lindqvist,
who is considered one of the country's most prominent saxophonists; Sven-Erik Lundeqvist, one of the new generation's most personal and listenable pianists; the outstanding Swedish double bass
player Mattias Svensson and the brilliant drummer Paul Svanberg.

The album "Snowflakes in December" whose title track is a newly composed song by Hannah, apart from this original, consists of classic Christmas songs in several new arrangements -
completely in sync with the works of history. With an exuberant interplay and joy of playing, the group performs both new and traditional Christmas jazz in its own and exciting way.
"My music grows in a borderland between the american Jazz history and Nordic tones. Here, with humility and curiosity, I can manage the legacy of my great inspirations in Jazz. This album is a tribute to some of the songs I grew up with in December, year after year. Songs I've laughed to, cried to and have great memories of. It is also a journey through different emotional states that I have experience when December, once again, has knocked on the door.”

Sedan dess har kören spelat in
både spelat in och mixat Lutherska missionskyrkans körs tidigare material.
Lutherska missionskyrkan, medan Lars Nilsson gjort slutmixen i Kållered.

Image Dan före dan - Adolf Fredriks Musikklasser Farsta

Image Christmas Concert
Recorded here is something which normally is evanescent over the airwaves or in the Philharmonie am Gasteig: the pre-Christmas evening in the series of Munich Sunday concerts, featuring Helen Donath as one of the most distinguished lyric sopranos of her times, the boys’ choir Regensburg Cathedral Sparrows and the Munich Radio Orchestra under the musical direction of Kurt Eichhorn. On this special evening, excerpts from Händels Messias could be heard, followed by Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto grosso Op. 6,8 Concerto per la notte di natale, Mozart’s Motette Ave verum corpus KV 618 and the Laudate Dominum from the Vesperae solennes de confessore KV 339, Christmas carols performed a cappella by the Regensburg Cathedral Sparrows (dating mostly from the 17th and 18th century) and Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate KV 165.

Image Veni – Songs of Christmas, Vol. 2
December is a time of anticipation. We wait and we hope – veni, come! The songs on this album encompass many nuances and moods – from joy and jubilant celebration to deep melancholy and longing. They move between folk tunes, English carols and traditional Christmas songs from different times and parts of the world, between Bach and Ives, Bulgaria and Norway. Several of the songs refer to the passing of the year, the cycle of nature and rhythms of daily life: lullabies for peace of mind and comfort, and songs about surrendering ourselves to the unfathomable and unknowable in the midst of our everyday concerns: the stars will always shine in the sky – and dawn will come. In others, we meet the little child born in a stable – vulnerable and yet immensely powerful. In the nine years following the release of ‘Rós – Songs of Christmas’ [BIS-2029], the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir’s annual Christmas concerts under the leadership of Grete Pedersen have become a cherished tradition in their native country. They are joined on this recording by folk musicians Sondre Meisfjord and Marco Ambrosini and by their long-standing collaborator, the fiddler and composer Gjermund Larsen, who also appeared on the choir’s previous Christmas album.

Image O Jesulein... A German Baroque Christmas Oratorio
This innovative program presents an imaginary Christmas oratorio made up of works by German composers of the 17th century. Many of these works are unpublished and come from the splendid Düben collection in the library of the University of Uppsala; they are arranged here in a sequence that introduces the scenes and the principal characters of the Nativity: Mary, Joseph, the Archangel Gabriel, the angels, the shepherds, the Magi and Simeon. These works belong to the genre of the historia sacra and depict the dialogue of the Annunciation between the archangel Gabriel and Mary, the arrival of the Magi — guided by angels — at the manger, and the scene where Mary and Joseph look for Jesus in the Temple. These narrative scenes stand in contrast to the large ensembles that represent the angelic host, the shepherds, and the adoring multitudes before the manger. The instruments also play an important role in this celebration with their contrasting timbres. This recording features works by Andreas Hammerschmidt, Wolfgang Carl Briegel, Christian Flor, Christoph Bernhard, Heinrich Schütz, Franz Tunder, David Pohle, and Thomas Selle.

Image Alle Jahre wieder!
The earlier Christmas album "Still! Still! Still!” was already a kaleidoscope of big-band styles, and yet Jazzrausch have managed to broaden the spectrum for "Alle Jahre wieder!” even further. In terms of form it is even more concentrated. Unlike any other album by the band, for the first time we hear purely instru-mental music. Furthermore, Kuhn has taken ten completely classic Christmas songs – each one of them rarely heard in jazz, and tunes which can often come across as a bit staid their original settings - from “Tochter Zion, freue dich” (Rejoice, daughter of Zion) to “Adeste fideles” (Oh Come, All Ye Faithful) or “Ihr Kinder-lein, kommet” (Oh, come, little children). The title track, “Alle Jahre wieder!” (‘again every year’ - based on the 1830s carol to music by Silcher which is very familiar to children and adults in the Ger-man-speaking world) appears here in completely new orchestral garb. Sometimes the listener will recognise the kind of swing typical of Glenn Miller. At other moments it is the incomparable big band elegance of, say, Artie Shaw. “Es wird scho glei dumpa” (It’s already getting dark – a Austrian carol) is given the full extra-high-pressure Tijuana brass treatment. “Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging” (Maria walks amid the thorns) gets the touch of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra after a Henry Mancini-like intro, and “Ich steh' an deiner Krippe hier” (I stand here at your manger) recalls more of the great swing heritage.

Image The First Nowell - Christmas Carols Through the Ag
The Christmas carol has its origins in the Middle Ages but it has since embraced a wide variety of musical backgrounds. In this album, religious sentiment is set in many different contexts –from the mystery plays to an African American spiritual, from its origins in Gregorian Chant and 16th-century secular dance to traditional examples rooted in poetry. Some of the most famous and beautiful examples are heard alongside energizing contemporary carols to present a tapestry of the genre across the centuries.

Image Christmas Harp Music
Christmas has always been a source of inspiration for musicians, and this harp album contains many Christmas pieces and famous melodies. Robert Nicolas Charles Bochsa (1789–1856) wrote much harp music, including his fantasy on Adeste fideles. Joseph Mazzinghi’s (1765–1844) Andante from Sonata Op.30 No.3 consists of a series of variations on the melody that almost a century later would become the famous song Deck the Halls. Charles Oberthür’s (1845–1924) “Virgo Maria” is based on the ancient Marian hymn O Sanctissima. Edmund Schüecker's (1860–1911) Weihnachtslied is not inspired by any traditional Christmas melody. Dutch composer Johannes Snoer’s (1868–1936) Phantasia combines the two themes of the Christmas carols Stille Nacht and Es ist ein' Ros' entsprungen. In France, Alphonse Hasselmans (1845–1912) was the most important harp tutor at the Paris Conservatory, teaching Tournier, Renié, Grandjany and Salzedo. Rather than depicting a light-hearted holiday scene, Hasslemans’ Conte de Noël evokes Christmas ghost tales. Marcel Tournier (1879–1951) succeeded Hasselmans at the Paris Conservatory. Tournier’s two pieces here are from his four volumes of Images. Les enfants expresses children’s joy watching the nativity scene, and Cloches evokes the sound of bells under the snow. Hasselmans’ first choice for his replacement was, however, not Tournier, but Henriette Renié (1875–1956), perhaps the most important female harp music composer. The melancholic Conte de Noël opens her collection of Six Pièces brèves. Marcel Grandjany (1891–1975) composed many pieces that remain part of study and concert programs for the harp, and his version of Stille Nacht here contrasts with Snoer’s version. Marcel Samuel-Rousseau’s (1882-1955) Variations Pastorales are inspired by an old French popular carol. Carlos Salzedo’s (1885-1961) compositions for harp were innovative: he invented and described several of the effects that are still used in contemporary harp music.

Oxford’s Somerville College Choir under its director Will Dawes presents this compelling new program of seasonal choral works solely by female composers from across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and including no fewer than eleven world premieres. This wide-ranging selection of repertoire reflects Somerville’s unique role as the only non-denominational college chapel at Oxford, as well as remaining true its founding principle of enabling women. Together these works tell a different story of the nativity but also of the times we live in, when diversity and equality capture the spirit not only of Christ, but Christmas itself.

Image Christmas Album
Christmas and its singular atmosphere have inspired numerous musicians and composers over the centuries. Following several “conventional” albums and the crossover project “Next Horizon”, the oboist Vilém Veverka too has succumbed to the irresistible Yuletide charm and decided to present “his Christmas”. The album’s leitmotif is Antonio Vivaldi’s L'inverno (most likely performed on the oboe for the very first time!). In addition to pieces by other Baroque Masters (Bach, Handel), it includes a musical account of Argentinean tango-flavoured winter (Ástor Piazzolla), as well as the songs Stille Nacht, Adeste fideles and Chtíc, aby spal (Wanting Him to Sleep), without which one would be hard pressed to imagine Christmas. The album is adorned by Patricia Janecková’s gracious voice, and it features two very special guests, the harpist Katerina Englichová and the soprano Adéla Rehorová. As in the case of other Veverka albums, Martin Hybler has contributed with arrangements, and the soloist is accompanied by the same musicians he was on the previous project, “Next Horizon”. Owing to its encompassing a wide range of genres and neoclassical arrangement, the album will undoubtedly delight not only virtuoso oboe lovers, but also many other listeners. Image Quatre suites de Noels
Here are charmingly fresh folk carols from the French countryside, arranged by one of the Ancien Régime’s favorite composers, and played alternately on the organ, the harpsichord and the fortepiano, following Balbastre’s own practice. Considered one of the major harpsichordists of his generation, Olivier Baumont has for several decades enjoyed a rich career as a performer, teacher and researcher. At the Conservatoire national supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, juries unanimously awarded him first prizes for harpsichord and chamber music. He benefited from the artistic guidance of Huguette Dreyfus and Kenneth Gilbert, and was occasionally invited by Gustav Leonhardt to attend his interpretation classes in Cologne. Olivier Baumont’s fine qualities as a musician were quickly recognized. Curious, ardent and erudite, he has a keen sense of communication (masterclasses, conferences, radio and television programs), he enjoys being on stage and takes pleasure in sharing his taste for the 17th and 18th centuries with others, making him hailed as an artist with multiple facets, solicited around the world.

In 1908, Maurice Maeterlinck wrote his play The Blue Bird (L’Oiseau bleu). Having proved a good source of operatic subjects before (Pelléas et Mélisande, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue), it is no surprise that composers jumped at the opportunity to write music to this latest. The French composer Albert Wolff made an opera of it that, though premiered at the MET, has since been forgotten. But even before that, in 1912, Max Reinhardt put it on as an adapted Christmas play in Berlin and he had none less than Engelbert Humperdinck write the incidental music to it. The music was never published until Steffen Tast found the score and salvaged it for us to hear. A sweet story and sweeter still music by Humperdinck newly discovered? Why, that’s in and of itself as though it was Christmas!

Image The Little Elf of Christ (Das Christelflein), Op.
To many contemporaries it might seem incomprehensible that Pfitzner had his poetic and musical masterpiece Palestrina followed by this slight fairy-tale opera, whose libretto could scarcely satisfy higher artistic demands. Pfitzner was captivated by the cozy sphere, reminiscent of old picture-books, of this typically German Christmas fable (in which also appear folklore figures like Knecht Ruprecht). The sound of Christmas bells and carols awakens in an elf the wish to draw close to humans. Although the old fir tree warns the elf of the heartlessness of the human race, he has his way and leaves his forest home. He in fact becomes acquainted with grief and illness and at last offers himself to be taken to heaven instead of Trautchen. The Christ-child agrees to the exchange, Trautchen is cured, and from now on the elf will come to earth from heaven each year at Christmas as a Christmas elf. The piece ends with a happy Christmas party by Trautchen’s family. The present recording is a production by the Bavarian Radio in which the original texts that Pfitzner placed between the individual numbers are replaced by a text by German journalist and literary writer Alois Fink. Sung and spoken in German language, the booklet contains a synopsis in English.

After studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Max Müller first devoted himself to acting with numerous stage and TV roles. As the Bavarian police chief "Michi Mohr" in the hit ZDF series "Die Rosenheim-Cops" he has long been a cult figure! Now the baritone trained actor presents a wonderful Christmas album with fifteen songs in nine languages and Christmas texts from three centuries. Max Müller says: "I grew up in Carinthia where, theoretically, it is possible to celebrate Christmas in three languages: German, Slovenian and Italian. I guess that aroused my curiosity to find out how Christmas sounds in other countries and what other people have written on the subject of " Christkind und Co " over the last three hundred years. In the meantime, I have a good "CD metre" of Christmas music to my name - I have not yet counted the piles of sheet music and books on the subject - and I am very pleased to be able to invite you on my own personal Christmas journey with this release. We are accompanied by the harpist Elisabeth Goritschnig, who actually succeeds in putting even hardened Christmas opponents in a mild mood. Even in high summer, at the time of recording!”
