The Father, the Son and the Godfather is a snapshot from a time when art music escaped from the courts and churches. Domestic music-making in the company of close friends became a treasured extension of social interaction, and the resulting boom in 'market opportunities' offered composers a tremendous freedom in their choices of genres and styles, as demonstrated by this colourful programme. It features three composers whose music could not be more different, taking into account that all works were composed during the span of only two generations by authors who knew each other better than just well: J.S. Bach (the father), C.P.E. Bach (the son) and Georg Philipp Telemann (CPE's godfather). We thus get Johann Sebastian's rigorous, intellectually demanding Sonata in B minor, ample examples of the elegant and tender Empfindsamer Stil of his son C.P.E., and in two Trio Sonatas a taste of Telemann's 'world music', in which the composer mixes elements of folk music from Poland with French and Italian styles of art music. This is the first recording of Paradiso Musicale, an ensemble featuring the acclaimed recorder player Dan Laurin and made up of an unusual combination of instruments: recorder, viola, cello and harpsichord. The members all have experiences from a number of musical genres, including avant-garde styles, and with musicians such as John McLaughlin, Prince and Frank Zappa as inspiration, their ultimate goal is to achieve the feeling of a jam session when performing. As can be heard on this disc - for instance in the final track, a Telemann Allegro - the result is exhilarating.

At the age of six, Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) was already proficient enough on the lute to play before the Emperor Leopold I. During a later stay in Italy, his solo playing 'astonished all the Italians' according to a contemporary writer. On his return to Germany Weiss became officially engaged at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, and by 1740 he was well-known throughout Europe as the finest lutenist of his own or any other generation. As well as playing and teaching, Weiss was an extremely prolific composer for his instrument: more than 100 sonatas (or suites) for solo lute, together with around 90 separate movements, survive. On a previous disc, Jakob Lindberg has visited this impressive œuvre in the company of his own unique 16th-century lute, built by Sixtus Rauwolf. That disc was received with great acclaim, for instance in International Record Review: 'Too good to be true - Lindberg and his lute are symbiotic partners in some of the most intensely personal music-making I've ever been stopped in my tracks by.' Other reviewers agreed, and the disc was selected 'Instrumental Choice of the Month' in BBC Music Magazine. For the present programme, which includes works from a later part of Weiss career, Lindberg has chosen a baroque lute with 13 courses (or pairs of strings) as more suitable. On it he gives us a Sonata in C major in Weiss's grandest style and an extrovert Sonata in B flat major. Separating the two is Weiss's most famous work, both in his own lifetime and today. Tombeau sur la mort de M. Comte de Logy is a highly expressive piece which pays homage to the finest of the many excellent aristocratic lutenists from Bohemia, Count Jan Antonin Losy von Losinthal.

Image A Soprano’s Schubertiade
Schubert’s empathy with women is everywhere evident in his body of songs, which include songs to, by, about and for women. Devised by Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton, the present recital brings us each of those possibilities and more. The playwright Helmina von Chézy wrote the text to the tender Romanze, intending it for her play Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus to which Schubert composed incidental music. Another female author, Marianne von Willemer, wrote the two Suleika poems for Goethe, who included them (under his own name) in the collection West-östlicher Divan. And no less than seven of the other songs on the disc are also associated with Goethe, and his characters Mignon (from Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre) and Gretchen (from Faust). Schubert was for a while almost obsessed with the mysterious and waif-like Mignon, making several settings of the poems associated with her. Less of an enigma but equally moving, Schubert’s Gretchen sings of awakening desire (Gretchen am Spinnrade) and laments her coming disgrace (Gretchens Bitte). Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton have collaborated on several acclaimed projects for BIS, most recently with the counter-tenor Iestyn Davies as their companion. Here they close their Soprano’s Schubertiade with three settings of poems by Walter Scott, albeit in German translations. The three ‘Ellen Songs’ are from the verse-romance The Lady of the Lake from 1810, with the last one, ‘Schubert’s Ave Maria’, being one of the composer’s best-known and most loved compositions.

'What I love about Carolyn Sampson’s approach to Purcell is its refreshingly unreverential approach. She treats these songs as working dramatic texts rather than, as is sometimes the case, sacred relics. So we get love in many forms, from the passionate to the bawdy – each time depicted with realism, humanity and warmth. Oh, and beautifully sung, as one has come to expect from this soprano.'

Two song anthologies published shortly after the death of Henry Purcell in 1695 have inspired this highly varied programme. Quoting the liner notes by lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, ‘recital programmes put together from the anthologies by the original purchasers would have mixed the genres without inhibition. Generally people sang what they liked and played what they liked, in any order they liked.’ It was this free-and-easy approach which incited soprano Carolyn Sampson and her co-performers to combine settings with accompaniments ranging from a single lute or spinet to string quartet with continuo. In Kenny’s words: ‘Seen from modern historically-informed or “authentic” perspectives a not-quite-familiar Purcell emerges, a composer of Gebrauchsmusik, flexibly scored and flexibly interpretable: virtuosic if the performers wish, innocently affecting if not.’ Including some of Purcell’s most well-loved songs as well as lesser-known gems, this collection has as its motto a line from the opening song Sweeter than roses: ‘What magic has victorious love’. As one of today’s most magic – not to say victorious – singers, whether on the opera stage or in the concert hall, Carolyn Sampson’s previous appearances on BIS have earned her high praise, for instance in American Record Guide (‘Her tone is extraordinarily beautiful: natural, warm and unforced, with almost superhuman vocal athleticism’) and from the reviewer in French magazine Classica-Répertoire, who described her performance of Bach’s Jauchzet Gott (on BIS-SACD-1471) in the following, glowing terms: ‘Carolyn Sampson interprets it in a voice which is quite light and angelic, but always present, and with a remarkable vocal ease and an infallible musicality.’ On this her first solo recital disc for BIS she is supported by some of the finest musicians in the field, including Anne-Marie Lasla (bass viol), Elizabeth Kenny (lute) and Laurence Cummings (harpsichord).

Within the liturgy of the Catholic Church there is a long tradition of singing the Lamentations of Jeremiah during Holy Week, based on a parallel being drawn between the text’s description of the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC and the death of Christ. By the time of Couperin and de Lalande, a practice had been established in which the text was divided into nine ‘lessons’ sung over three days, with one candle of a special candelabra being extinguished after each lesson, until ‘tenebrae’ or darkness was achieved on Good Friday. Originally sung early in the morning on the relevant day, by the mid-seventeenth century the lessons were given the evening before, possibly as a response to the new vocal styles, which made the singers reluctant to perform at dawn. The traditional ban against the use of instruments during Holy Week is reflected, if not strictly adhered to, in the sparse settings of both de Lalande and Couperin for bass viol and chamber organ. The deeply spiritual aspect of the Leçons de Ténèbres can also be inferred from the complaints by contemporary writers concerning the use of opera singers: these did not always declaim the music with the necessary decorum.

Some of the finest examples of the genre are the three Leçons by François Couperin, composed for the royal monastery of Longchamp c. 1714. (Couperin himself at one time referred to a full set of nine lessons, but only the three for Holy Wednesday are known today.) Couperin, named ‘Organiste du Roi’ in 1693, was the colleague of de Lalande, ‘Maître de Chapelle’ at the French court, whose own Leçons were composed for the royal chapel. The five Leçons de Ténèbres gathered here are performed by two of the finest sopranos in the field of early music, Emma Kirkby and Agnès Mellon, who here makes her first appearance on BIS. They are given expert support by Charles Medlam and Terence Charlston, with a shared background in the distinguished ensemble London Baroque’

’With the accordion I am in the middle of the action. I narrate, sing, dance and walk – and also weep, lament, rejoice or express gratitude.’ This is how Mie Miki in her liner notes to this disc describes performing Grieg’s Lyric Pieces on the accordion. ’Butterfly, for instance, is played quite differently from on the piano: here I myself become the butterfly and regard the landscape from a butterfly’s perspective. On the piano just the opposite would have been true.’

Out of the 66 Lyric Pieces, Mie Miki has selected 24 of her favourites, presenting them interspersed with a few other pieces by Grieg: three Norwegian folk tunes and Anitra’s Dance and The Death of Åse from Peer Gynt. No adaptations have been necessary in transferring these beloved pieces to the accordion – Mie Miki plays them straight from the piano score. And yet, how differently they sound on the new instrument. The drones of some of the more folk-inspired dances are more reminiscent than ever of the harding-fiddle, and the butterfly flits back and forth more weightlessly. And as for emotional impact, the incessantly repeated melody of The Death of Åse grows into a storm of sorrow in the bellows of the instrument, before slowly coming to a resigned rest. Mie Miki is a highly versatile musician, as proved by her discography – on BIS she has released recordings of music from Heinrich Isaac and Machaut via Bach to Sofia Gubaidulina and contemporary Japanese composers such as Toshio Hoskawa. Described as a ‘tone painter on her instrument’ in a Fono Forum review of a previous disc, she here gives examples of every nuance available on her rich palette.

The big, powerful trombone of our time is a creature of wide open spaces and large auditoriums. 'Trombone' simply means 'big trumpet' and the two are nowadays seen as obvious bedfellows. Not so in the 17th century! The instrument was called sackbut - a soft sounding, gentle thing whose natural partners were the viola and recorder: in 1666, the British scholar William Dugdale contrasted the 'couragious blast of deadly war' produced by trumpeters with the 'sweet harmony of violins, sackbutts, recorders and cornetts'. The sackbuts were much smaller than today's trombones, with tiny mouthpieces, tubes narrower than the ones on a modern trumpet, and bells that a man's hand might easily cover. Compared to the modern trombone, it was far easier to crack a note, but as compensation you could add inflections and ornaments with a much greater grace and range. Christian Lindberg, who has done more than anyone to establish the modern trombone as a solo instrument, bought his first sackbut 30 years ago, and already then dreamed of recording a baroque programme. Now the opportunity to do so has arrived - largely due to Lindberg's encounter with the violinist Richard Tognetti and his Australian Chamber Orchestra. The Lindberg / ACO collaboration has already been documented on disc in a programme of 18th-century trombone concertos (BIS-CD-1248), a release described in International Record Review as 'sensational ... one of those recordings which make criticism a glorious irrelevance.' On this recording Lindberg and a handful of the ACO players in 'sweet harmony' present a programme including sonatas and canzonas by Biber, Frescobaldi and Dario Castello.

Born in Hamburg 200 years ago, Fredrik Pacius studied with Ludwig Spohr in Kassel, before serving as a violinist in the orchestra of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. When he arrived in Helsinki in 1835 it was in order to take up the post of music lecturer at the city's university. By the time of his death, almost six decades in the service of the musical life of his new country had earned him the epithet 'the father of Finnish music'. He composed the first Finnish opera - Kung Karls jakt - and other works for the stage include The Princess of Cyprus and Loreley, both of which are available on BIS. But what he is mainly remembered for today is Vårt land ('Our Land'), the national anthem of Finland, which he composed and conducted the first performance of in 1848. The choir at this occasion was Akademiska Sångföreningen (The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki) which Pacius himself had founded in 1838. Some 160 years later the same choir performs the song here, together with other repertoire written or arranged for it by Pacius. The programme is made up of songs in Swedish (including some of the emblematic patriotic songs of the evolving nation, as well as works in a lighter vein), Finnish (mainly arrangements of folk-songs) and German - settings by Pacius of poems in his native language by writers such as Friedrich Rückert. Following the choirs traditions some of the songs are here performed by a more intimate ensemble, i.e. quartet or octet.

With this disc, Monica Groop brings a heroic enterprise to a close. Including the present programme she has recorded all 172 of Grieg's songs, including ones that were never published during the composer's lifetime, and, in some cases, only recently discovered. With song texts in Norwegian, Danish, German, English and Latin they constitute an entire universe: from love songs and laments to patriotic appeals, descriptions of nature, humorous ditties and lullabies. Throughout the series, reviewers have praised Monica Groop's genius for adapting her art to the subject matter at hand, as exemplified by the following quote from Fanfare regarding volume 5: 'Monica Groop is a singer with the ability to colour her voice to suit the text and mood of a song, and with real dramatic and poetic insight.' From volume 4 onwards she has enjoyed the congenial support of Roger Vignoles at the piano. On the present disc, the two perform Grieg's last song cycles, Op. 69 and Op. 70, both to texts by the Danish poet Otto Benzon. Also included is a version for voice and piano of the harrowing Den Bergtekne ('The Mountain Thrall') Op. 32, the retelling of a folk tale about a young man who gets lost in the forest and is bewitched by the daughter of the Troll. The remainder of the programme is made up of twelve songs without opus number, including an earlier version of The Tryst from the famous Haugtussa collection, Op. 67.

Its overall length (upwards of 160 cm) and great number of strings (up to 16 courses) makes the chitarrone one of the more spectacular instruments of the early baroque. The name probably means 'large kithara', after the instrument played by the Classical Greek poets, and it was first developed as a bass lute in order to accompany singing and recitative - indeed it appears to have become the favourite instrument in Italy for accompanying the voice by 1600. It also enjoyed a short-lived but rich flowering as a solo instrument, however, to which the three virtuosi of the album title all contributed greatly, as performers as well as composers. Between 1604 and 1640, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger (also known as Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger), Alessandro Piccinini and Bellerofonte Castaldi published a number of collections of chitarrone music, from which Jakob Lindberg has chosen some favourite dances, arias, toccatas and passacaglias. Combined into seven suites, they provide rich opportunity to enjoy the particular timbre and the special playing techniques of this splendid instrument, the chitarrone. Highly regarded both for his live performances and his many recordings, Jakob Lindberg has a long-standing interest in the many varieties of lutes, including lute mandorée, orpharion and archlute, and has now dedicated himself to researching their relative - research which informs both the performances and Lindberg's own liner notes.

Antonín Dvorák's path to his famous cello concerto was long and far from direct. Certainly he had used the instrument to great effect in his orchestral music, but for a long time he doubted its suitability as a solo instrument. To some extent, this disc charts the process of the composer towards the recognition of the full capabilities of the cello, as it includes chamber works that Dvorák composed directly for cello and piano, or arranged for the combination. The earliest of these, although not published until long after the composer's death, was the Polonaise in A major, a piece lyrical and virtuosic in turns. Some thirteen years later, in 1892, Dvorák composed the Rondo in G minor and arranged Silent Woods, originally a piano duet. Shortly after he also made versions for cello and orchestra of both pieces, almost as if preparing himself for the concerto, which he began writing in 1894. Dvorák's own practice of arranging existing works has encouraged Christian Poltéra to select a number of the composer's violin pieces and songs, performing them here in his own transcriptions. These include the Violin Sonatina, from the same time as the Rondo and Silent Woods and originally intended for Dvorák's own children. Among the songs are Lasst mich allein, which Dvorák quotes it in the slow movement of the cello concerto, and the ever-popular Songs My Mother Taught Me, as well as Rusalka's Song to the Moon, as eloquent a declaration of love as can be, even when performed without words. Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular partners in chamber music, and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank Martin together, on discs that have received distinctions such as Diapason d'or, Editor's Choice in Gramophone and '10/10'on web site Classics

From the reign of Henry VIII and onwards, the lute and its practitioners enjoyed the patronage of the very highest English society. Henry played the lute himself, as did his daughter Elizabeth I, who during one period employed as many as five lutenists at her court. In 1603, when she was succeeded on the throne by James I, the tradition was maintained: with his appointment of John Dowland the king increased the number of royal lutenists, while his queen, Anne of Denmark, played the lute herself. This royal enthusiasm for the lute influenced the aristocracy, and an English style of lute music was established. A large corpus of solo music has been preserved, mostly in manuscript sources, from which Jakob Lindberg has made a personal selection. This includes obvious candidates - such as John Dowland and Robert Johnson - but also pieces by the enigmatic Cuthbert Hely, whose work only survives in one single lute book, and by a certain 'Gauthier' - possibly Jacques Gaultier, who had fled to England after killing an adversary in a duel. The inclusion of this French lutenist also serves to highlight the abundance of French lute music in Jacobean sources, especially, as heard here, in the form of courantes. Another favourite genre in many lute books are settings, often anonymous, of Scottish folk music, and this is also reflected in Lindberg's selection. One of the foremost exponents of the lute and this repertoire, Jakob Lindberg performs the programme on what is possibly the world's oldest lute in playing condition, built in c. 1590 - and thus almost exactly contemporary with the music on this disc.

It is often said that Beethoven's three String Trios Op.9, together with Mozart's Divertimento, form the pinnacle of their genre - one which by the beginning of the 19th century would be almost supplanted by the string quartet. Be that as it may; it would be hugely misleading to dismiss the composer's first attempts, the Trio Op.3 and the Serenade Op.8, as mere preparations. Both works are in fact exceptionally fertile examples of the suite form, in Mozart's and Beethoven's day surviving in the guise of divertimentos and serenades. While the Op. 9 trios are all cast in the four-movement mould that we are used to from the symphonies, sonatas and string quartets of the classical period, these works consist of sequences of six and eight movements respectively, with minuets, marches and instructions such as 'alla polacca' reminding us of courtly light music from an earlier period. In spite of such touches, however, they are far from 'old-fashioned': the adventurous spirit of the young Beethoven is plain to hear, in the exceptional creative imagination in terms of textures, thematic development and formal innovation, and in the masterful writing, which gives each instrument an equal importance and a highly individual treatment. This is music which needs a first-class chamber ensemble made up of three soloists in order to be fully realized, and with the Trio Zimmermann that is exactly what is on offer here.

This pioneering recording, which was first released in 1995 as a set of four conventional CDs, contains the complete solo lute pieces ascribed to John Dowland. As opposed to the composer's lute songs and instrumental dances, which Dowland himself carefully prepared for publication, his lute solos have survived in much less reliable versions. Jakob Lindberg, student and successor of Dowland specialist Diana Poulton as lute professor at the Royal College of Music in London, brought all of his expertise to bear in preparing the scores and choosing among variant versions for his recordings, and also wrote the informative liner notes included in this edition.

Dowland's solo lute music is extraordinarily varied and ranges from light frivolous pieces to profound works expressing the darkest melancholy. It is characterized by an uncommon tunefulness and many of the pieces were given texts to become lute songs, one example being his famous pavan Lachrimæ which he also published as the song Flow my teares. This also applies to several of the many galliards - a genre which also shows a wonderful diversity: extrovert dances inspired by 16th-century 'battle pieces' but also sublime, introvert and sweet-sounding pieces such as the Melancholy Galliard. In order to perform these 92 pieces, Dowland's testament to lutenists, Jakob Lindberg uses three different instruments, first and foremost an 8-course lute but also a 10-course lute and an 8-course orpharion.

For their second release on BIS the Trio Zimmermann has chosen to record Beethoven's String Trios Op.9 - a set of three that the composer himself upon their completion described as 'la meilleure de mes oeuvres' - the finest of his works. He composed them in 1796-98, after two earlier contributions to the genre which both clearly followed in the footsteps of Mozart's great Divertimento K563. With their concentrated sonority, intense drama and striking formal disposition, the Op.9 trios mark the highlight as well as the end of Beethoven's production for string trio, before he went on to compose quartets instead. But they cannot be regarded as merely a preparation for taking on that prestigious genre; to quote the composer's biographers in Thayer's Life of Beethoven, 'none of the earlier works can compare with these trios in terms of beauty and novelty of invention, tasteful execution, treatment of the instruments and so on; overall, they even surpass the quartets that appeared shortly afterwards.'

With each of its members enjoying distinguished solo careers, Trio Zimmermann is truly a world-class ensemble. Frank Peter Zimmermann, Antoine Tamestit and Christian Poltéra first joined forces in 2007, and have since performed together in the most important musical centres of Europe, including the Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals. The trio's first recording, of Mozart's Divertimento K563, was released in 2010 and has met with worldwide critical acclaim, the French magazine Classica finding that the trio 'establishes, certainly for a long time to come, a new reference version' and calling it 'a magnificent recording.'

'Some of the most striking and moving singing put down on disc for years' is how White Night, the previous release with the Norwegian Soloists' Choir and its conductor Grete Pedersen, was described on the website of Gramophone. Having focused on music from their home country before, the team here presents a German programme, featuring two of the most influential composers in 19th-century choral music: Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert. It includes both sacred and secular music, scored for male, female and mixed choir a cappella and accompanied, starting with a selection from Brahms' deservedly popular Zigeunerlieder for mixed choir and piano. A contrast to these settings of Hungarian folk songs is provided by the autumnal Five Songs for mixed choir a cappella - a collection of poems dealing with the transience of youth, love and life, which in many respects presents a masterful distillation of Brahms' choral output. From an earlier part of the composer's career come two sacred works for mixed choir, the motet Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen, showing Bach's influence on the composer, and Geistliches Lied, with organ accompaniment. Schubert is represented with a setting of Psalm 23 for women's choir and piano and Der Gesang der Geister über den Wassern to a poem by Goethe which Schubert chose to set several times. The version recorded here, numbered D714, is the last one. It has an unusual scoring for eight-part male choir and low strings which in 1821 perplexed the first audience, and which even today has a very special effect on the listener.
