The sheer attractiveness of Saint-Saëns's music has ensured its immortality in the canon of French romantic composers. Spanning almost four decades, his five piano concertos vary widely in character but offer some of his most exciting if unorthodox creations, and represent an important evolutionary phase in the French piano concerto. The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D major, widely considered the first by a major French composer, is a youthful and exuberant piece, and the virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor is one of Saint-Saëns's most popular and frequently performed works in any genre.

Considered by some to be the ‘Cinderella’ of Saint- Saëns’ five piano concertos, the Third is notable for its adventurous approach to harmony. Volume 1 can be heard on 8573476.

The Fourth Piano Concerto reveals Saint-Saëns at his most inspired and innovative. The Fifth was composed in the Egyptian temple town of Luxor, and displays a rich tapestry of exotic cultural influences from Javanese, Spanish and Middle Eastern music, as well as portrayals of chirping Nile crickets and croaking frogs, and the composer’s representation of ‘the joy of a sea crossing’. Volumes 1 and 2 can be heard on 8.573476 and 77.

Precocious as a child, Camille Saint-Saëns was once known as the French Mendelssohn. The remarkably assured First Symphony, completed at the age of 17, was praised by Berlioz and Gounod at its first performance. The elegantly crafted Second Symphony defies convention not least by basing the first movement on a fugue, while the symphonic poem Phaéton skilfully brings this Greek mythological drama to life with stampeding horses, thunderbolts and a moving apotheosis. This is Volume 1 of 3 devoted to the five Saint-Saëns Symphonies.

Image Symphony No.3
Inspired by Liszt, to whose memory the work is dedicated, Camille Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3 is ground-breaking in its inclusion of organ and piano. For the composer this represented 'the progress made in modern instrumentation' and the result is a work both spectacular and grandiose. By contrast the Symphony in A, his first completed symphony, is a youthful piece, fully revealing his admiration for Mozart, whilst Le rouet d'Omphale, dating from the 1870s, is an impressively atmospheric tone poem. Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 are available on 8573138.

Saint-Saëns's Symphony in F major 'Urbs Roma' was his prizewinning entry to a competition organized by the Bordeaux Société Ste Cécile, but the work remained unpublished in the composer's lifetime. This early work is notable for a masterly final movement which, unusually, comprises a theme and variations. The symphonic poem La Jeunesse d'Hercule is a portrayal of the conflict between pleasure and duty, while the Danse macabre is amongst his most popular orchestral works. The first two volumes of this complete edition of Saint-Saëns's symphonies can be heard on Naxos 8573138 and 8573139.

This third volume rounds off our new edition of Saint-Saëns's complete Symphonies, the first two volumes of which having received wide critical acclaim. Volume 2 (8573139) with the famous 'Organ' Symphony (No. 3) is equal to the toughest competition, with MusicWeb International "immensely impressed by Soustrot's reading... played beautifully by the Malmö orchestra. Soustrot creates a sense of expectancy that keeps you on the edge of your seat... excellent orchestral playing throughout." ClassicsToday.com felt that the "second volume in Naxos' ongoing Saint-Saëns symphony cycle is as good as the first" (8573138). With some of the best recordings available of Saint-Saëns's less frequently performed and recorded symphonies and orchestral works, this is now an assured market leader in a very popular field.

Saint-Saëns’ operatic works contain instrumental music of vivacity and charm but have been undeservedly overlooked. Ascanio contains a substantial and elaborate divertissement that fellow composer Reynaldo Hahn termed ‘the entire Renaissance in a few pages’. Les Barbares, a tale of conquest and revenge, includes a vivid Prologue and joyful ballet, while La Princesse jaune with its pentatonic writing, and La Jota aragonese laced with Spanish vitality, show the composer at his most generously carefree. Jun Markl is a highly-respected interpreter of core Germanic repertoire and has become known for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French Impressionists. His long-standing relationships with the state operas of Vienna, Berlin and Munich, the Semperoper Dresden and the Metropolitan Opera have been complemented by his music directorships of the Orchestre National de Lyon and the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra. In recognition of his achievements in Lyon, he was honoured in 2012 with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Märkl has an extensive discography – among the over 50 albums he has recorded are the complete Schumann symphonies, works by Mendelssohn and Wagner, Ravel, Messiaen, and a highly-acclaimed Debussy set with the Orchestre National de Lyon. He is currently working on a cycle of works by Saint-Saëns and Hosokawa.

Image Works for Cello and Orchestra
Composed during a period of social readjustment in post-war France, the First Cello Concerto marked Saint-Saens’ acceptance as a composer among the establishment, and has long been one of his most admired works. Recognition for the fiendishly technical Second Cello Concerto took longer, although its tranquil central movement contains one of the most sublime melodies Saint-Saens ever wrote. The supremely famous Le Cygne appears alongside the less well-known Bach-inspired Suite in D minor, and with the inclusion of the Romance this programme contains Saint-Saens’ complete works for cello and orchestra.

The contributions made by Camille Saint-Saëns to the cello repertoire were considerable. In 1872, the year of the first sonata, he had already written his Cello Concerto No.1. 1875 brought the now popular encore piece Allegro appassionato for cello and piano, to be followed in 1902 by Cello Concerto No. 2, and in 1905 came his Cello Sonata No.2 in F major, Op.123 ...

Saint-Saëns holds a vital place in the history of French chamber music. At a time when his compatriots were more devoted to opera and song, Saint-Saëns (who wrote both, too) repeatedly produced chamber music of compelling individuality and lasting significance. The 1875 Piano Quartet in B flat major, Op 41 remains one of the great works in the chamber repertory, a masterful example of the composer's organisational skill and lyric gifts. The gorgeous Barcarolle is followed by the youthful Piano Quintet in A minor, Op 14, a brilliantly confident work with a concerto-like rôle for the piano.

Image Complete Piano Works, Vol. 1
Geoffrey Burleson, piano

A seminal figure of French Romantic music, Camille Saint-Saëns was also a great keyboard prodigy. The Études, Op. 52 unite exuberant virtuosity with shimmering delicacy, while the Six Études, Op. 111 pay homage to Chopin and Bach as well as anticipating Ravel's impressionism. The neo-Baroque Op. 135, for left hand alone, is modelled on Couperin and Rameau.

This title is the first volume of a series that brings together everything from Saint-Saëns' spellbinding three sets of études to first recordings of transcriptions and other works.

Geoffrey Burleson has performed to wide acclaim throughout Europe and North America, and is equally active as a recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and jazz performer. His numerous solo appearances include prominent venues in Paris, New York, Rome, Athens, Mexico City, Rotterdam, Chicago, Boston, Washington, Switzerland, England, Spain, and elsewhere.

Geoffrey Burleson, piano

A seminal figure in the history of French Romantic music, Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was also one of the greatest keyboard prodigies of the past 200 years.

When he made his piano recital debut at the age of 10 in the Salle Pleyel, he announced to the audience that he would be pleased to perform any of Beethoven's 32 sonatas as an encore. A good deal later, Liszt referred to him as the greatest organist on earth. Saint-Saëns was a prolific composer in all genres, and thus it is not at all surprising that he created a bountiful body of works for both organ and piano.

Not only was Camille Saint-Saëns a piano virtuoso, eulogised by Liszt amongst many others, but he was one of the most exciting and imaginative of composers for the instrument. He enjoyed taking baroque and classical forms and translating them into his own brand of romantic language, qualities that Geoffrey Burleson explores so adroitly in this second volume of the complete piano music.

His Six Fugues, Op. 161 are masterly and complex character studies, devoid of academic leanings, whilst his famous Allegro Appassionato, Op. 70 possesses brilliance and lyrical depth. The Thême Varié, Op. 97 is witty and explosive, the Suite, Op. 90 full of charm, and the Allegro, Op. 29 possessed of dazzling breadth.

He made his New York City solo recital début at Merkin Hall in 2000, sponsored by the League of Composers/ISCM. His appearances as concerto soloist include the Boston Musica Viva, Arlington Philharmonic, New England Philharmonic, and the Holland Symfonia in The Netherlands, in repertoire ranging from Mozart, Weber and Saint-Saëns to Gershwin and Klaas de Vries. Geoffrey Burleson is principal pianist with the Boston Musica Viva, the New York Art Ensemble, David Sanford's Pittsburgh Collective, and is a member of Princeton University's Richardson Chamber Players. He has also performed and recorded frequently in duos with cellist Matt Haimovitz, violinist Mary Rowell (from ETHEL), and vocalist Maria Tegzes. A laureate of the International Piano Recording Competition (Silver Medal), and the Vienna Modern Masters International Performers' Competition, he was also the recipient of a DAA D Grant from the German government to support a residency at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

"A top-notch pianist. Burleson's piquancy and poetry blended beautifully."
The Washington Post

Geofrey Burleson, piano

Saint-Saëns's first published works for piano were these vivid and characterful Six Bagatelles, Op. 3.

Album, Op. 72 dates from Saint-Saëns's mid-career and teems with rich colours and textures - haunting and exciting alike.

Also includes the richly evocative tone poem Rhapsodie d'Auvergne.

Saint-Saëns was a piano prodigy, eulogised by Liszt amongst many others.

Saint-Saëns's facility to evoke scenes, personalities and colours was profound along with his ingenious use of baroque and classical forms.

Although he is best remembered for his orchestral and instrumental music, Saint-Saëns was also responsible for spearheading the revival of the French Baroque, especially the music of Lully and Rameau, as well as being perfectly placed to absorb the latest instrumental dance music. His five 'character waltzes' include the ethereal and ravishingly textured Valse mignonne, the stylistically forward-looking Valse nonchalante and the virtuosic Valse gaie, the composer's final waltz for solo piano, while the three minor key Mazurkas are strongly characterised and filled with ingenious musical contrasts. Last but not least, the three 'souvenirs' are delightful evocations of particular corners of the world that inspired Saint-Saëns.

The Fine Arts Quartet's albums of Mendelssohn's String Quintets (8.570488) and Glazunov's chamber music (8.570256) were named "Recordings of the Year" by Musicweb International, and their recording of Schumann's string quartets ( 8.570151) was hailed by the American Record Guide as "one of the very finest chamber music recordings of the year". On this disc the acclaimed Fine Arts Quartet performs Camille Saint-Saëns's two magnificent string quartets. "Saint-Saëns has been unfairly tarnished as being a lightweight composer," notes first violinist Ralph Evans. "Listening to these serious, intellectual, brilliantly crafted yet delightful works will change minds in a hurry."

Saint-Saëns’ travels often resulted in geographically themed works, such as the Suite algérienne: this exotic musical picture postcard – full of perfumed sensuality and the brazen confidence of march themes – reflects the composer’s visits to colonial North Africa. The two suites on this recording are both structured around dance movements and were originally scored for different forces – the Suite in D major, Op. 49 for harmonium, the Suite in D minor, Op. 16 for cello and piano. The engaging Serenade, Op. 15, rarely performed with its original, exotic scoring, is heard here in an orchestral transcription.
