The Goldberg Variations' alternation of connection and freedom, fantasy and strict form, was able to lead in a hitherto unknown way to a higher unity and raise them to the rank of a real compendium of the art of variation, which particularly strongly influenced Beethoven, Brahms and Reger. The American pianist Tzimon Barto shows us his own fascinating interpretation - a new focus to this masterwork with Barto's well-known sensibility.

Andras Ligeti, conductor

In Liszt's two Piano Concertos we see his both spheres united: the revolutionary new techniques of playing that Liszt had wrestled from the piano during his years as a virtuoso and the orchestra works written on the basis of poetic ideas. His „Fantasies for piano and orchestra" - these paraphrase's to other works - the composer rather aimed at brilliance and virtuosity here. Not often performed this 3CD-Set includes all Fantasies for piano and orchestra as well than the popular two piano concertos.

RE-MASTERED

Happy Birthday! In 2009, the Lautten Compagney celebrates its 25th birthday. And this is the right moment to re-release this recording of 1993. Wolfgang Katschner, artistic director of the ensemble, and Hans-Werner Apel already performed during the recording. But also, the young Hille Perl - nowadays a renowned viola player - was a member of the Lautten Compagneyand took part in the recording. The CD contains German Lieder and instrumental pieces by Orlando di Lasso, original from Mons in Flanders, who became Bavarian court composer. It was Lasso's aim to combine the "mellifluous Italianity" to the "stalwart Germanity and thus elevate the German Lied to a "daintier and nobler state". The vocal solists on this CD are Mona Spägele, Bernhard Landauer, Wilfried Jochens and Thomas Herberich. Many of the works are though performed by the Lautten Compagney as mere instrumental pieces in order to reflect the historical practice of the time.

RE-MASTERED

Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach (1732-1795) was also called the "Bach from Brückeburg". This small residence in northern Germany was J. C. F. Bach's working place for 45 years. He was appointed at the age of eighteen as chamber musician and made a career as court chapel master. Stylistically, the three cantatas of this CD are works of the transition period between the Late Baroque and Early Classic. These three cantatas are all about the subject of change: the metamorphosis of a statue into a human being ("Pygmalion"), the visionary transmutation of the reality into a delusional picture ("Die Amerikanerin"), and the transformation of a human being into a God of the Seas ("Ino"). Always it is love to force the change from one state to the other, with or without the help of gods or by mere genius living in one's heart. After 20 years since their release, the representations have not lost a bit of their freshness or stylistic competence. In June 2008, Hermann Max was awarded with the Bach medal of the city of Leipzig for his merits for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and his family.

RE-MASTERED

In occasion of Burkhard Glaetzner's sixty-fifth birthday, we are re-publishing the complete recording of all oboe sonatas by Antonio Vivaldi. Glaetzner is one of the most renowned virtuosic to play this instrument: he was professor at the Universities in Leipzig and Berlin, is a specialist for New Music, and called to life and directed many different ensembles. This recording of the Vivaldi sonatas with Christine Schornsheim playing the continuo is from 1986. The timely distance of the recording is not noticeable. The recording has a stylistic competence. The CD also contains the first recording of the sonata for violin, oboe, the obligate organ and bassoon, RV 779.

RE-MASTERED

This CD is a double remembrance: In 2009, both German baritone Hermann Prey and Australian pianist Geoffrey Parsons would have celebrated their 80th birthday. Both died in the 1990's at the age of 69, respectively 66. Their recording of German popular ballads with adaptations by Johannes Brahms and the participation of soprano singer Pamela Coburn is from 1987. It shows an enormous mastership: Hermann Prey's silky timbre matches perfectly with Brahm's muted colors. His precise articulation and the adequately simple arrangement show the beauty of these Lied adaptations. Geoffrey Parsons was renowned for being one of the best Lieder pianists of his generation. His gift was his ability to play difficult passages in a natural way and nonchalant way.

Ensemble Delirio

The Scherzi melodichi of 1734 contain seven suites named after the days of the week. The programmatic idea, which is stated on the cover sheet and in the foreword, is to provide music for every-day to entertain the visitors of Bad Pyrmont (in today's Lower Saxony), back then one of Europe's most popular spas. The structure of the Fortsetzung des Harmonischen Gottesdienstes (1731/32) also follows a calendrical principle. The young Ensemble DELIRIO put a programme together, which features each day of the week in at least one of the compositions. The selection of the pieces is based on two cycles by Georg Philipp Telemann.

‚Composing is the attempt to bring the tranquillity - and the noise - in me to life'(Norbert Sterk)He is one of the many individualists on the contemporary Austrian music scene. No adherent of any group or school, positioning within stereotypes between aesthetic ideologies, such as characterized the 1970s and 1980s, is completely alien to him.At the Conservatoire of the City of Vienna, he studied piano, double bass, music theory and composition with Karl Heinz Gruber, and at Vienna University he studied philosophy, musicology and theatre studies. He also attended seminars held by Iván Eröd, Karl Heinz Füssl, Alfred Schnittke and Kurt Schwertsik.

At the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris there exists a very unusual 17th century manuscript of music for solo viola da gamba (lyra viol), known only by its shelf number Reserve 1111. This tiny leather-bound book is elongated and has 270 pages. Compiled by at least eight different individual hands, the music is notated almost entirely in tablature and reflects a variety of scordatura tunings. It was acquired by the Berlin library in 1880 and is generally thought to originate from the Brandenburg region that is part of northern Germany. Near the end of the Thirty Years War, Brandenburg started to regain its prosperity and stability under the leadership of Frederick William, known as the 'Great Elector' (reigned 1640-1688). Quite a number of the finest viola da gamba players of the day are known to have visited or spent time there. Frederick William himself played the treble viol. Res. 1111 has never been published in a facsimile or modern edition. Not only were there a great number of pieces with which to come to grips, but Juliane Laake also had to find some way to organize them into a coherent and presentable narrative. What you hear now is a record of her exploration and sleuthing and discovery.

If the German Lied is 'Romantic', it is not so either because it expresses the effusions of a nostalgic heart or because it embodies the perfection of the union between music and poetry or because it goes back in the annals of our cultural historians. No, the Lied is Romantic because it sets an endless dialectic in motion between fragments and totality, between perfect closure and infinite opening. Unlike Wolf (his inimical counterpart), for instance, Brahms was not tormented by the issue of the union between music and poetry, as he was confident of his own practices and did not postulate the problem in such terms.

Ludwig Thuille was a comprehensively and multifariously educated musician: a composer, pianist, choir director, singer, music teacher (composition and piano) and music theorist.Until a short time ago, Ludwig Thuille was a shadowy figure - the reference to his historical importance as head of the 'Munich School' did not mean much. It is only Thuille's correspondence with Richard Strauss that has kept his erstwhile significance alive. Signs of their friendship were the almost contemporaneous settings of specific poems.

Henri Dutilleux, named as "van Gogh of classical music" (Die Welt), has been a long time of his artistic life a maverick, dreamy and stubborn man, looking for his own style between tradition and modernism orientated to his great paragons Dukas, Ravel and Roussel. 'I'm composing colours' he always pointed out and admit his work not only to impressionism but also to his great reverence to van Gogh.

This colourful music finally helps for a much too late success and tribute of his compositions, especially his orchestral works. This CD Production offers the rarely performed 1st symphony, the nearly unknown two orchestral songs by poems of Jean Cassou and finally the much better known Métaboles.
