Image Der Ring des Nibelungen (13 CD)
Richard Wagner’s Ring was performed in the highly reduced version by Wieland Wagner at the eight Bayreuth festivals since the re-opening of the theatre in 1951. However, by 1960 it seemed that the time had come for a new production, a task placed in the hands of Wieland’s brother Wolfgang, whilst direction of the production was given to the then 48-year-old conductor Rudolf Kempe. The reaction to the refreshingly new musical portrayal of the Bayreuth debutant from Saxony was unanimously positive and remained so for the five years that Kempe conducted the orchestra; indeed, the impression was retrospectively reinforced (one critic many years later compiled a now famous, comprehensive and comparative discography, citing a recording of Kempe’s Bayreuth Ring as the best recording ever). Originally trained as an oboist, the Dresden-born Kempe began conducting in the 1930s and after the war became director of the Dresden, and then of the Bavarian state opera companies. In the course of the 1950s he enjoyed great success as a guest conductor at London’s Covent Garden (including Wagner’s Ring), and in 1961, the second year he conducted the Ring in Bayreuth, he assumed direction of the Royal Philharmonic. This recording, available for the first time, has been remastered from the original tapes of the Bavarian Broadcasting Company. What makes this release so unique is its cast, many of whom can be heard giving their debut’s in Bayreuth.

BERNARD HAITINK – PORTRAIT BEETHOVEN | BRUCKNER | HAYDN | MAHLER To mark the 90th birthday of the eminent conductor Bernard Haitink, this representative portrait – a box set containing a total of eleven CDs – is being released by BR-KLASSIK. These exceptional live recordings document the long-standing and intensive collaboration between the Dutch conductor, the Bavarian Radio Chorus and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. For six decades now, ever since he first conducted a Munich subscription concert in 1958, Bernard Haitink has repeatedly conducted the city’s orchestras - sometimes in the Herkulessaal of the Residenz, sometimes in the Philharmonie im Gasteig. The orchestras’ musicians and singers are just as happy to work with him as the Bayerischer Rundfunk’s sound engineers – a tribute to Bernard Haitink by his long-time recording manager Wolfram Gaul can be found in the accompanying booklet. The CD box set provides an excellent overview of their collaboration on masterpieces of the First Viennese School as well as German-Austrian Late Romanticism: outstanding compositions by Beethoven, Bruckner, Haydn and Mahler ...

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Lorin Maazel, conductor

In a spectacular concert cycle from January to March 1999, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Lorin Maazel played the complete symphonies of Bruckner in Munich's Philharmonie in the Gasteig. Maazel had at his disposal an ensemble with a long, impressive Bruckner tradition dating back to Eugen Jochum. The founding father and first Chief Conductor of the orchestra ranks as one of the most significant Bruckner conductors in the interpretive history of these works.

The chronological compactness of the recording process, which guaranteed a unified artistic signature is the outstanding feature of this compete recording vis-à-vis many of the versions from the competition.

An occupation with Bruckner's complete works is an overwhelming experience for today's listeners. With an enthralling effect the series develops from the stylistic variety of the early symphonies all the way to the ultimate clarity of the musical language in the unfinished Ninth Symphony.

Complete Bruckner recording made by an orchestra with an outstanding Bruckner tradition.

The chronological compactness of two months guarantees a unified artistic signature.

The only complete Bruckner recording with Lorin Maazel.

Image Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (11 CD)
GUSTAV MAHLER SYMPHONIES NO. 1 - 9 In his nine symphonies, Gustav Mahler created an entire world for himself and his listeners. More than any other composer, he tries in his symphonic oeuvre to get to the very depths of the circle of life – the eternal cycle of growth and decay. What set of complete works would be more appropriate, therefore, for bringing the qualities and the unique sound of one of today’s leading orchestras to their fullest expression? – In the 11-CD Mahler complete edition released by BR-KLASSIK, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks – under some of its most influential conductors, but above all its current chief conductor Mariss Jansons – tackles Gustav Mahler's symphonic works. The performances were recorded live between 1996 and 2016 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig and the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz, and most of them are recent. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Mariss Janson conducts Symphonies Nos 2, 5, 7 and 9, Bernard Haitink Nos. 3 and 4, Daniel Harding No. 6 and Colin Davis no. 8, the "Symphony of a Thousand". Numerous soloists and choirs are also featured. The recordings form a challenging part of the symphonic repertoire from the recent history of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks; under the baton of Mariss Jansons, and other conductors of the late 20th and early 21st century especially associated with it, this renowned orchestra, with the musical and interpretive mastery for which it is justly famed, provides truly memorable performances. These days, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks is probably one of the leading ensembles for conveying the special sound of Mahler’s music. • The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks presents Mahler's nine symphonies • Exciting live atmosphere • Recordings of Munich concerts between 1996 and 2016 • The symphonies are conducted by the Orchestra’s chief conductor Mariss Jansons as well as by guest conductors Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Bernard Haitink, Daniel Harding and Colin Davis. Image Symphonies 5, 6, 7, 9 & Triple Concerto (3 Blu-ray
Beethoven 5 & Triple Concerto More than 200 years after its premiere at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Martin Helmchen have congenially mastered the artistic challenge of Beethoven’s gemstone. Under Herbert Blomstedt's sensitive direction, the soloists unite chamber musical intimacy together with virtuoso sophistication – and prove once again that the Triple Concerto is an unduly underestimated, much too rarely programmed masterpiece. With the composer's 5th Symphony, Blomstedt succeeds in achieving an entirely new perspective of this work. In the culmination of his three-year, intensive reenactment of Beethoven’s cosmos, the impressive sound that characterizes the Swedish grand seigneur's conducting is heralded by transparency rather than showmanship, relevance instead of pathos, and tenderness in place of sentimentality. Beethoven 6 & 7 In his Sixth Symphony, the “Pastoral”, Ludwig van Beethoven conveys his musical message in such a way that lets the listener literally “see” images of beautiful nature, tempestuous storms, and shepherds singing in the fields, whereas in his Seventh Symphony, Beethoven lets the music speak for itself. The performances of these works by the Gewandhausorchester under its conductor laureate Herbert Blomstedt give the uplifting feeling that the intentions of both composer and performers are united in serving the musical message. In the lively, subtly differentiated interpretation of the works, sincere happiness, deep respect, piety, joyful serenity and an affinity to nature as well as passion, vitality and spirit can all be felt. This is what the "authenticity" of making music is all about. The humanist and musician Herbert Blomstedt embodies this truth in a unique way, creating an atmosphere where the wonders of music all become true. Beethoven 9: Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony and the musical city of Leipzig are closely intertwined with each other: Felix Mendelssohn, Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester, made the work an indispensable part of the concert hall repertoire and Arthur Nikisch, one of his successors, established in 1918 the worldwide tradition of performing this groundbreaking and pioneering work at the end of the year. The phenomenal Herbert Blomstedt, Gewandhaus-kapellmeister from 1998 to 2005, once again conducted Beethoven's Ninth in Leipzig for the 2016 New Year celebrations. With his former orchestra, of which he has been Conductor Laureate since 2005 and with whom he enjoys a close friendship, he achieves a gripping interpretation of this monumental work. Under the direction of Blomstedt, together with his excellent musicians, the choirs, and an outstanding quartet of soloists led by the magnificent voice of Christian Gerhaher, the utopia of global freedom and humanity in Friedrich Schiller's "Ode to Joy," penned in Leipzig in 1785, grows to overwhelming dimensions.

Image Donizetti Heroines (13DVD)
This DVD box-set is entitled Donizetti Heroines because many of the composer’s operas are named after theirfemale protagonists. Even in the few cases where they aren’t, they give musical portrayals of unforgettable female characters, tragic and passionate figures, often innocent victims of the infernal gears of power and therefore destined to a hapless fate. Between 1818 and 1843 Gaetano Donizetti composed some seventy operas, many of which became very popular in his day. His first success came in 1830 with Anna Bolena and from that moment he rivalled Bellini as the ‘leading operatic composer in Italy’, churning out works with the constant rhythm of a typical 18th-century composer. Some of Donizetti’s best works rank among the masterpieces of 19th-century opera. A few of them have remained in the repertoire worldwide since their debut, while others were to be revived only from the second half of the 1900s, in the wake of what has rightly been called the ‘Donizetti Renaissance’. Today operatic audiences are radically different from those of two hundred years ago and during the 2018/19 season Donizetti was placed fifth in the list of the world’s most represented composers. We believe that the credit for this goes to his splendid heroines and their great interpreters who, yesterday and today, brought them alive on stage and continue to do so. This collectors’ release offers a selection of nine operas featuring some of the most iconic and unforgettable Donizetti characters, performed by outstanding singers such as Mariella Devia, Jessica Pratt, Carmela Remigio, Patrizia Ciofi and Sonia Ganassi.

Staatskapelle Berlin / Daniel Barenboim

Anton Bruckner's symphonies are gigantic mountain ranges carved out of sound, traversed by steep chasms, broad steppes, and dark valleys. The effect of their performance is comparable to the exalted feeling of reaching the summit of a mighty peak. Daniel Barenboim guides the Staatskapelle Berlin to the heights of Bruckner's lofty sound formations. With a vision hewn from experience, Barenboim follows the harmonic development of the symphonies 4 through 9, revealing to us the breathtaking musical panorama of these exceptional symphonic masterpieces. "Heard together, one understood so much about this strange music, with its obsessive monumentality, terrifying expressive strength, and dizzying compositional syntheses of elements from the Middle Ages to Schubert and Wagner." (Berliner Zeitung) This unforgettable Bruckner cycle sets new standards, and guarantees the Staatskapelle Berlin and their principal conductor "a place in the Bruckner pantheon." (Der Tagesspiegel).

Image 3SACD-BOX: Balkan - Honey and Blood
Musicians from various countries;
Hespèrion XXI / Jordi Savall

The name of the Balkans has an unusually graphic etymology: having discovered the beauty of this pivotal part of Europe, which stretches from Italy to the Bosphorous, and the ruggedness of its people, who put up fierce resistance to invasion, the Turks chose to describe `the region with the words Bal (Honey) and Kan (Blood). Honey & Blood: never was there so apt a metaphor! So much richness and drama packed into such a small area is guaranteed to fire the imagination of historians and artists, especially musicians.

Thanks to the magic of an ambitious programme built around the cycles of life, Jordi Savall invites us to travel the length and breadth of a region which has always had more than its share of human and historical drama. 230 minutes of music scan the full range of human emotions illuminated by 1001 different musical traditions, all of which nevertheless spring from a common source.

"The future belongs to those with the longest memory", wrote Nietzsche. Once more, Jordi Savall brilliantly demonstrates that music is a key component of the collective memory that enables us to face our future. This lavishly documented CD-Book, translated into 12 languages, is a must for any self-respecting collector. Fans of Jordi Savall's comprehensive documentary editions will need little prompting.

Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Chor der Bayerischen Staatsoper, Chor & Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks / Wolfgang Sawallisch

In this year of his 200th birthday, Richard Wagner’s three early operas are enjoying unusual prominence: several staged productions of 'Das Liebesverbot' are planned, while his breakthrough work 'Rienzi' and even his first opera, 'Die Feen', are to be spotted (although the latter is usually given in concert performance). However, to this day it is a rare thing to find all three played at the same opera house, in the same season, under the same conductor as was the case at the Bavarian State Opera in 1983 under Wolfgang Sawallisch.

Sawallisch, who passed away just a few weeks ago, was the Director of the State Opera for many years. In all three of these operas he confirmed his Wagnerian reputation as a supreme proponent of a marvellous, fluid style of music-making that was devoid of pathos. This was to the benefit of his ensemble of singers, who were largely spared the dangers of a heavy, cumbersome Wagner performance style, even though several of their roles undoubtedly demanded great dramatic ability. This requirement was fully met by Linda Esther Gray as Ada in 'Die Feen' and by Sabine Hass as Isabella in 'Das Liebesverbot', for example. With René Kollo as the title hero in 'Rienzi' and Hermann Prey as the governor Friedrich in 'Das Liebesverbot', these operas featured German singing stars of the day who both had a lyrical approach to Wagner and to whom great clarity of text was paramount. Arindal in 'Die Feen', the other murderous tenor role that is to be found in Wagner’s 'sins of youth', was sung by John Alexander, who established his international career primarily in Italian repertoire. This was also the case with June Anderson, who sings the role of Arindal’s sister, Lora.

Both in 'Die Feen' and in 'Rienzi', the 'younger' generation of Cheryl Studer and Jan-Hendrik Rootering made a lasting mark, and, in the State Opera ensemble under Sawallisch’s direction they were inexorably led towards future stardom.

This new CD box from ORFEO, in which these operas, hitherto released individually, are now available in a limited special edition. This is more than just a contribution to the Wagner year; it is a homage to an era of opera in Munich.

Wiener Philharmoniker / Wilhelm Furtwängler

“This is a set which will be or urgent interest to Furtwängler collectors and it should be explored by anyone wanting to hear a great conductor at the height of his powers … Orfeo has given us a Furtwängler set of considerable musical significance ... an engrossing experience.”
(International Record Review)

After Berlin, Vienna was the music centre to which the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler had the closest artistic connections. Under his direction the Vienna Philharmonic made a whole series of radio recordings that have now, for the first time, been carefully edited under the auspices of the Furtwängler specialist Gottfried Kraus and released by Orfeo on 18 CDs. The series commences with recordings from 1944/45, including one of Mozart’s g-minor symphony K550 in which Furtwängler demonstrates his clear sense of form from the very first bars. Beethoven’s third 'Leonore' Overture and an excerpt from Schubert’s 'Rosamunde' music complete our selection from this, the earliest of the recording sessions. Several works are to be found more than once in this anthology. Thus, Beethoven’s Eroica can be compared in an early version from 1944 and a later recording from 1953, just as Bruckner’s Eighth can be compared in recordings from 1944 and 1954. Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is offered no less than three times here – from the years 1951, 1952 and 1953 – a work that surely no other conductor could make into such an 'event', an experience of universal import, as could Wilhelm Furtwängler. This was also true of his Brahms interpretations, represented here by the first two symphonies, the 'Haydn' Variations, the Double Concerto and the 'German Requiem', which is sadly only extant in an incomplete recording from 1951. This is, incidentally, the only time in this collection that we hear Furtwängler conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Besides Irmgard Seefried and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau – two vocal soloists whom Furtwängler admired and engaged repeatedly – we can hear the chorus of the Vienna Singakademie on this recording.

They also sing in Bach’s 'St Matthew Passion': in a partial recording from 1952 and in the famous performance of 1954 that was shortened by Furtwängler himself, but which is here released in a restored recording based on the original radio broadcast, without the cuts that were later made by record companies. Here as elsewhere in this collection, the acoustic heritage of the Viennese radio stations of the time has been restored using the best possible technological means available today. Even collector’s items such as the Piano Concertos K365 and 482 by Mozart, with Dagmar Bella and Paul Badura-Skoda, have probably never sounded better since they were first heard in the concert hall. Hence justice is done to Furtwängler’s timeles” style of music-making that unites different epochs, ranging from Gluck’s Overture to 'Iphigenie in Aulis' to Mahler’s 'Songs of a Wayfarer' and Furtwängler’s own Second Symphony – a work that despite all its late-Romantic echoes succeeds in attaining originality and a considerable emotional impact. This universality of Furtwängler has not found its match to this day.

Image Rafael Kubelík: The Munich Symphonic Recordings (1
From 1961 to 1979, Kubelík was Principal Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Bavarian Radio in Munich. He had found there his new musical home. He led the BR Symphony Orchestra to new heights, developing a unique sound and performance culture in a perfect diversity of repertoire from Baroque music up to free tonal Expressionism and to Karl Amadeus Hartmann and Benjamin Britten. As a musician, his prime directive was lyrical phrasing as well as clear and conscious articulation of the harmonic tensions and the vitality of the rhythmical and metric flow. He always had all these elements in mind, seeking to balance them. And Kubelík loved the gorgeous, lush sound, but never at the price of diaphanousness. This CD Edition gives us a detailed overview about his legendary interpretations and is also a time document of his long time working period in the city of Munich.
