4 Wheel Drive
Nils Landgren / trombone & vocals Michael Wollny / piano Lars Danielsson / bass & cello Wolfgang Haffner / drums
It scarcely feels necessary to mention the pre-eminent status of all four of these artists, because that is evident from hearing the music. When Nils Landgren brings such feeling to his own melody “Le chat sur toit”, or when Michael Wollny dazzles with the bluesinfused piano solo in “Lady Madonna”; when “Polygon” opens with a bass intro from Lars Danielsson, or when Wolfgang Haffner sets up the power groove to propel “4WD”, then it’s clear what’s happening: four leading figures in European jazz who know each other well and who have appreciated each other’s work for many years have now got together. True, their paths have crossed many times before in all kinds of configurations, but here for the very first time are the four friends as a quartet. They decided to record an album together at the Nilento Studio in Gothenburg: “4 Wheel Drive”. The title of the album reflects the equal role which each of the four musicians has had in setting the direction for the quartet. They take to the road together, both as superb soloists and as team players. In addition to one original composition from each of them, Landgren, Wollny, Danielsson and Haffner also decided that they would focus on four living creative forces from the recent history of music and interpret their tunes, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Phil Collins and Sting: So McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” becomes a subtly-lit jazz ballad. Freed from everything extraneous, and transformed by Wollny’s prepared piano, Billy Joel’s “She’s Always A Woman” is a mysterious and enraptured love song. The musicians interpret Genesis’ song “That’s All” as a collage of instrumental sound. And for Sting’s song about letting go, “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free”, they find a fitting musical parallel: the freedom of jazz leads naturally to Landgren’s powerful trombone improvisation. The album is bookended with music from the fast lane: it opens with Wollny’s fast-paced showpiece “Polygon”, and closes with Danielsson’s “4WD”; he had Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in mind when he wrote this title track. 4 Wheel Drive: an ensemble with a high-performance four-cylinder engine, with all the gears meshing perfectly. And the fuel: jazz.

Unbreakable
Unbreakable opens with the title song, Nils Landgren’s own composition. It begins with an unmistakeable guitar intro by Detroit funk legend Ray Parker Jr. (for the occasion an “Honorary Funk Unit member”) a funky riff that sets the pace for what’s to follow; a nonstop funk blowout.
Mr Redhorn, Nils Landgren would never, ever mess with a good recipe.Unbreakable opens with the title song, Nils Landgren’s own composition. It begins with an unmistakeable guitar intro by Detroit funk legend Ray Parker Jr. (for the occasion an “Honorary Funk Unit member”) a funky riff that sets the pace for what’s to follow; a nonstop funk blowout. The Funk Unit rhythm section is tighter than ever before and lays down a groove like no other band. The horn arrangements (by band member Jonas Wall) are exquisitely precise and the process of arranging, mixing and performing they have developed over the years is unique and totally their own. If you add to that an outstanding trombone player/lead vocalist you have one of the most dynamic groups of musicians ever to hit the stage in Europe. Some funk, some jazz and some straight-out par...

New Eyes on Martin Luther
Many have tried to combine jazz and classical music. Few have succeeded. In “New Eyes on Martin Luther” the ensembles have focused on the similarities instead of the differences, and have scrupulously avoided attempts at parody or postmodern extravagance.Everyone is just doing what they’re best at, and with the open tonality of the renaissance music, they have found the perfect meeting place and playground for it. Swedish soprano Jeanette Köhn together with a small ensemble (Johan Norberg guitar, Magnus Lindgren, flute and clarinet, Eva Kruse, bass) fronted by Nils Landgren, recorded their album “New Eyes On Baroque” with Swedish Radio Choir under the baton of Gustaf Sjökvist (2013) released on ACT: “… how well the timbres of soprano saxophone, trombone and guitar suit the original melodies. The effect in Handel's ’Gia nel seno’ and Pur...

Christmas with my Friends - The Jubilee Collection
Christmas With My Friends are: Nils Landgren / trombone & vocals Sharon Dyall / vocals Jonas Knutsson / saxophones Jeanette Köhn / vocals Eva Kruse / bass Jessica Pilnäs / vocals Ida Sand / vocals & piano Johan Norberg / guitars & kantele
Dear friends,
10 years of Christmas With My Friends lie behind us. Wow! But, how did it all begin? Well, here is the story behind Christmas With My Friends: I have been listening to music all year around since I was a toddler in the small country town of Degerfors in Sweden. My whole family was into music and there were always someone who practised an instrument or played a record in the house. Great fun. At an early age I realized that around Christmas, the whole musical climate changed drastically. Everything went on overload. “More is more” seemed to be the key. I liked it up to the age of 14 but then I had enough of our annual Pat Boone sessions. Jingle Bells and Santa Claus everywhere. I was still a music student when I at the age of 19 took the chance to become a professional musician and ever since at Christmas time, I asked myself the same question: ‘Is there an antidote to all this?’ Very slowly and almost subconsciously I started to develop ideas for a different kind of concept for Christmas music, free from arranged overload, jingle bells and big string sections. Many years later I felt ready to face my record label chef Siggi Loch with the idea of making a Christmas album my way. Christmas With My Friends, reflecting my own idea of what Christmas could be like, through the filters of my musical friends and myself. Siggi embraced the idea and after having made the choice of music and musicians, we decided on recording a live concert both audio and video, in the beautiful medieval church of Odensala north of Stockholm. The rest is as they say, history… We went on tour with the first version of the band in 2006, with only one change: Bassist Eva Kruse replaced Lars Danielsson on the tour that also featured singer Viktoria Tolstoy and guitarist Ulf Wakenius. On the recording, I had the idea of incorporating a trombone choir and my old friend and fellow trombonist Walter Brolund helped me out in the best of ways. On tour, I hired trombone choirs all over Germany, sometimes new every day. Hard work for me to rehearse, but a lot of fun as well. On that first tour, we performed in Mannheim in the “Alte Feuerwache” on December 12. On that particular day we celebrate Lucia, the queen of light all over Sweden. Big thing. We had decided to play the concert in traditional Lucia costumes, with Viktoria as Lucia for the first time in her life, with a candle crown on her head and the rest of the girls as her maids with me, Johan, Jonas and Ulf Wakenius as stable boys. All in white. The girls with glitter in their hair and candles in their hands, the boys with funny hats just like at home. Very Swedish indeed. We thought it would be a great success but almost no one in the audience understood what was going on. They all stayed very quiet after we had marched through the whole room singing Sankta Lucia, so we got out of the dresses, lights and hats as fast as we could and continued in our normal concert clothes. It could have all stopped right after that introduction but luckily it did not, the performance was a success and now we can look back on ten years of Christmas With My friends. I think that none of us believed that Christmas With My Friends would turn out to be such a success and maybe that‘s why - just doing what we wanted to do. Spreading joy through music, our way. Reflective, contemplative but not without humor and groove and always on the highest musical level. Since the first concert in Odensala we have performed hundreds of concerts, moving audiences all over Germany and Sweden. From the second album on, the band has been consisting of the same eight members and it is really a bliss to work with so much talent combined with great friendship: Vocalists Jeanette Köhn, Sharon Dyall, Jessica Pilnäs and Ida Sand, who is also playing piano, my musical duo partner since the mid eighties Johan Norberg on the guitar, Jonas Knutsson on saxes, above mentioned Eva Kruse on bass and myself. Why change a winning team? A big part of our success is of course Siggi Loch and our record company ACT in Munich who believed in me and the idea in the first place and our agency Karsten Jahnke Konzertdirektion in Hamburg, where Ina Lieckfeldt has been working our tour schedules with great results. At the end of the day, the audience decides if they want to join in or not and it seems like the decision is in our favor. Without all my Christmas friends, none of this would have been possible. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart and soul for ten wonderful years. Merry Christmas!
Love, Nils Landgren

Christmas With My Friends V
line up Nils Landgren / trombone & vocals Sharon Dyall / vocals Jonas Knutsson / saxophones Jeanette Köhn / vocals Eva Kruse / bass Jessica Pilnäs / vocals Ida Sand / vocals, piano & school organ Johan Norberg / guitars & kantele
Fans of Nils Landgren will know him as Mr. Redhorn. This dare-devil Action Man drives his Funk Unit heroically from the front, sweat bejewelling his forehead. That, however is just one of the many sides of this popular and immensely likeable Swedish trombonist and bandleader. The master of the in-the-pocket groove also has a much softer, more romantic side. This sentimental mode found its most natural and effective method of expression in a thought he had exactly ten years ago. Landgren’s idea was not just a good one, it was a keeper: he would gather good friends around him, and they would celebrate Christmas together, through music.
So, in 2006, on went the red satin dinner jacket for the very first time, and “Christmas With My Friends” was born. The concert in the ancient Odensala Church in Stockholm was recorded, and then issued as a CD. It was to prove the beginning of an unprecedented success story. Every two years, Landgren took himself off on a Christmas season tour, alternating between Sweden and Germany. Four albums have chronicled this developing story, and each of them has in its turn been awarded with the German Jazz Award. Three of them have gone platinum, and the most recent (so far, watch this space...) is currently gold. The press and the public got right behind these albums from the start. The widely-read German current affairs magazine Stern garlanded “Christmas With My Friends” with the description of “the most beautiful of all the Christmas CDs of the year,” praising its “unique, bright, sparkling, festive atmosphere that goes straight to the heart." Stern was just as fulsome in its recommendation of the second album: “Our verdict is still the same. This one also glistens like a starry Nordic winter night sky.” The UK critic Dave Gelly writing in the Observer has praised the albums as follows: “There is an irresistible feeling of serenity and calm about the whole thing”...” “Landgren’s concept of a Christmas album is so much more sophisticated than the norm that it's the only possible choice for this season” …. “The secret lies in the combination of simple intimacy, polished musicianship and a programme full of subtly chosen surprises.” A visit in person to one of these concerts, often held in resonant churches, almost always completely sold out, gives a sense of the special mood they create: in the audiences are always radiant expressions from blissfully happy faces, and to judge by the expressions one sees, the concerts seem to answer a need, to be everything one could ever dream of, the very best way to get completely carried along by the Christmas spirit.

Eternal Beauty
Nils Landgren / trombone & vocals Michael Wollny / piano Johan Norberg / guitars Lars Danielsson / upright bass & cello on 03 Rasmus Kihlberg / drums Lisa Nilsson / vocals on For Your Love
"Never change a winning team" they say, and so it was that for his new vocal and ballad project, " Eternal Beauty", Landgren once again reverted to this select band of brothers around Michael Wollny and Lars Danielsson. Musical diamonds like „Isn't It A Pity" by George Harrison, „Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister and Tina Turner's Hit "We Don't Need Another Hero" shine in jazzy "Eternal Beauty". This might well be the best Funk Unit that Nils Landgren has had gathered around him since 2010: technically outstanding, this is a group of team players who combine well with a great groove connection. James Brown meets Parliament meets Crusaders meets Funk Unit: that's one way you could describe the musical concept on "Teamwork". It is pure party feeling, the notes whirl coolly through the ranks, superb horn sets alternate with ecstatic solos, dance beats, smooth vocals and strong melodies, but there is also time for elegance and heartfelt blues. "Teamwork" is all that and then some, played by a dream team of sweat-inducing funk workers with soul in their blood.
"I felt that Funk Unit had so much more to give," recalls team captain Landgren, whose funk formation still shows no signs of fatigue even after 8 albums. With "Teamwork", this star player puts more emphasis on the skill of the collective, and pursues the same creative strategy that made funk legends like James Brown and George Clinton's Parliament great: go with the flow, follow where the groove takes you. "Hours of jamming preceded the recording sessions. We just turned the recorder on and played. Magnum Coltrane Price and Robert Ikiz laid the groove foundation that inspired us to new melodies and horn riffs. Then we checked out what we'd recorded together: where is there potential, where is there a great melody, which riffs get under your skin? It was like panning for gold. The songs emerged bit by bit. Then we went into the Atlantis Studio in Stockholm, where ABBA once recorded their unforgettable hits." The result is an album that wasn't planned or calculable, but that was born live, so to speak. Nothing sounds deliberate, it's all organic.

The Moon, The Stars And You (Collectors Edition)

Special Guests: Joe Sample, piano; Joao Bosco, guitar & vocals; Richard Galliano, accordion; Steve Gadd, drums; Cæcilie Norby, vocals; Johan Norberg, guitar
One of Germany's most widely read magazines - Brigitte - described Nils Landgren's 2011 album The Moon, The Stars And You as a record "of timeless beauty". Renowned newspaper ueddeutsche even commented on the CD: "It probably shows Landgren on the peak of his art". Now the much-loved album is rereleased in a Collectors Edition including an exclusive Live-DVD. The original album gains its particular atmosphere out of a big but still subtle production featuring the NDR Big Band and Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
The whole spectrum of the different moods of the album - meditative, longing, occasionally funky yet continuously inspired and swinging - is presented in a more intimate setting in the concert in Stockholm in 2011. Landgrens band featuring German jazz pianist Michael Wollny, Swedish bassstar Lars Danielsson and Rasmus Kihlberg on drums, perfectly interacts whereby "it is almost impossible not to be carried away by the charm of this music. (German magazine Stern).
The Moon, The Stars And You is the sequel to Landgrens highly successful Sentimental Journey and a real concept album. Jazz has always had a certain fascination for the moon. After love, it is one of the more common topics for jazz standards, and for Nils Landgren is no exception. "The moon and the stars are just wonderful to look at - especially with someone special. The moon is closely connected with love," says Landgren, showing his romantic side. "I knew that there are so many good songs about the moon to choose from." These songs include jazz standards, such as Henry Mancini's Moon River or Herbie Hancock's Stars in Your Eyes, as well as folk and pop songs like Kris Kristofferson's Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends or Moonshadow by Cat Stevens, and he also includes South American song by Kurt Weill called Holofotes alongside his own compositions.
