Image Violin Concertos
This is the world première recording of Johan Halvorsens recently rediscovered Violin Concerto. Less well-known as a composer than Carl Nielsen, Halvorsens chamber music (8572522) has been described as delightful (American Record Guide) and effervescent though occasionally darkly hued (Fanfare). Described as tremendously beautiful by its original soloist, this once acclaimed concerto in the tradition of Grieg was long thought to have been lost, its score burned by the composer. Its rediscovery is bound to create a buzz amongst musicians and connoisseurs alike. Brilliant violinist Henning Kraggeruds affection for his native Norwegian composers is well established in Naxos recordings such as his strikingly successful (Gramophone) arrangements of Griegs sonatas with orchestra (8573137), his two volumes of works for violin and piano by Christian Sinding (8572254 and 8572255) and a Sibelius Violin Concerto (8557266) described as a masterly performance by Edward Greenfield in the Gramophone.

Mozart wrote his Violin Concertos in 1775 while still living in his home town of Salzburg and in service to Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. Mozart had already toured internationally and found his parochial environment restricting, but as ever he rose above circumstances to create sublime and thrillingly unconventional masterpieces filled with wit and charm. The finely sustained melodic expression of each concerto’s slow centre provides the perfect foil for inventive sparkle in outer movements that include a cheeky reference to the opera Il re pastore in K. 216, and an exotic ‘Turkish’ moment in the finale of K. 219.

Image Three Concerti for Violin (arr. Kraggerud)
Henning Kraggerud, Violin • Tromsø Chamber Orchestra

Grieg is one of the world's best known composers, but the three Violin Sonatas are a relatively unfamiliar part of his output, despite being among his own favourite pieces. Grieg never wrote a violin concerto, and the foremost Norwegian violinist of his generation, Henning Kraggerud, assisted by Bernt Simen Lund, a member of the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra, has taken up the challenge of creating three new concertos from the sonatas. In these arrangements the solo violin is set against a string orchestra augmented by wind instruments in order to retain the feel of chamber music.

Dalasinfoniettan / Bjarte Engeset

There was a particularly rich vein of Nordic writing for the violin between the years 1910 and 1930. In this recital Henning Kraggerud, an exemplary stylist lauded for his Sibelius and Sinding concerto disc, Naxos 8.557266 (CD) and 6.110056 (SACD) ('Kraggerud's performance is superb throughout' - Classics, explores this memorable repertoire. It ranges from Halvorsen's folk-flecked Norwegian Dance to Stenhammar's passionate Sentimental Romances. Late romanticism floods Sinding's Abendstimmung whilst Sibelius's Six Humoresques remain a masterpiece of the genre. The earlier works of Ole Bull illustrate the brilliance and panache of 'The Nordic Paganini'.

Louis Spohr's life-long artistic commitment to elegance, sturdy workmanship and emotional reticence has burdened him with a reputation as a nostalgic conservative.

Yet his melodic mastery, delicately poised Classical sensibility and advanced treatment of harmony, are evident in the highly enjoyable music on this disc.

Glittering solo passages and congenial interplay between the soloists characterise both the Concertantes, which pay tribute to the Baroque concerto grosso and look forward to the music of Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Mahler, and the Duo, with its lively dialogues between equal partners.

Image Music for Violin and Piano Vol 2
Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud is one of Scandinavia's most sought after artists; Christian Ihle Hadland one of Norway's most exciting young pianists. Together they comprise a formidable partnership, as their release of Sinding's Violin and Piano Music Vol. 1 (8.572254) has shown. Volume 2 presents several of the Norwegian composer's finely crafted salon pieces, whose charming character, sweet melodic lines and lively harmonies are Sinding's hallmarks. The Sonata in Olden Style, while richly Romantic, includes an innovative movement whose time signatures 5/4 and 7/4 perhaps look forward rather than back.

While Ysaÿe's Six Solo Violin Sonatas (Naxos 8.555996) remain his best known works, the Belgian virtuoso also composed other pieces which translate his thorough knowledge of the violin's capabilities into thrilling music. The performance here of his Sonata for Two Violins is based on the composer's autograph and that of the String Trio draws on the original hand-written parts. For the recording of the Cello Sonata the artist referred to Ysaÿe's own fingering and bowing instructions. All three works display the composer's dazzling mastery of technique and instrumental colour.

Remembered today for his piano favourite The Rustle of Spring (Norwegian Classical Favourites 8.557017), Christian Sinding ranked second only to Grieg in his homeland and was honoured abroad, composing a wealth of immediately appealing and well-crafted Romantic music including the works for violin and piano on this disc. Playing a richly sonorous 1744 Guarneri del Gesù, violinist Henning Kraggerud (whose recording of violin concertos by Sibelius and Sinding on 8.557266 was acclaimed as "a masterly performance...warm and powerful, with a confident, wide vibrato and immaculate intonation" by Gramophone) joins Christian Ihle Hadland, one of Norway's most exciting young piano talents.
