JULY 2019

NEW ON NAXOS

Here is the July issue of NEW ON NAXOS. This month’s spotlight release is The String trios by the prolific but less known Romantic composer Thieriot are an enrichment of the chamber music repertoire. On this album interpreted by the successful Trio Lubotsky (Mark Lubotsky, Katarina Andreasson and Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky)

Other highlights include:

• Rossini’s Eduardo e Cristina is a genuine ‘forgotten opera’, having suffered under its reputation for having been assembled from other works. This critically acclaimed 2017 Bad Wildbad revival, recorded live, is the first performance since an earlier revival in 1997, and therefore fills a substantial gap in Rossini’s operatic canon.

• The international success of Faust after its premiere in 1859 completely overshadowed all of Gounod’s subsequent operas. Heard here in the 1864 London version, Faust represents 19th-century French opera at its peak. Sung in French. Bass Carlo Colombara is a real presence on the current international stage; he has a DVD, The Art of the Bass (2.110612), and has garnered critical praise.

• Rahbari has conducted numerous successful Naxos recordings, but this is the world premiere release of his cycle of symphonic poems My Mother Persia. This is the first of two volumes which will include the entire cycle of eight pieces, with Volume 2 (8.574065) planned for release in October 2019. Alexander Rahbari conducts his own music in this recording.

Image La donna serpente (Blu-ray)
Alfredo Casella was one of the ‘Generation of the eighties’ who sought to shake Italian music from its longstanding operatic heritage and the dominance of Puccini. La donna serpente was Casella’s only full-scale opera, its fantastic plot based on Carlo Gozzi’s renowned fairy tale that perpetually alternates between tragedy and comedy, expressed in neo-Classical music that skillfully portrays the sinister and ethereal world of the fairies as well as the intense emotions of the human realm. This production was acclaimed for Arturo Cirillo’s dreamlike setting and Gianandrea Noseda’s pin-point conducting: ‘What energy, what precision! … he delivers the complexity of this score with a disconcerting ease.’ (resmusica.com)
