En pärla här, liksom Willow weep for me.

Bara "Willow weep for me" har fått ett annorlunda arr, i bluesfunkig stil.

(Jönköpings-Posten)

Whats new about playing old standards? Firstly. It is probably up to you listener to judge. For me personally, I have reached a point in my career where it feels natural and challenging to play this great tunes that we played and recorded by some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. Perhaps I have too much respect for them throughout the years. Mostly, though, I have been focusing on playing and recording my own music intil now. If I can express myself in the same way playing standards as I play my own music, then I an happy. I like to keep on learning from the great tradition and develop my own way of expression through that knowledge. I have know Thomas Fonnesbaek since he was a student, but we only started to playing together half a year ago. He is warm, positive person, and a creative musician to work with. He really adds great spirit in the studio and in our live performance. I gave my sun Paul Svanberg his first drum set when he was four years old. He play some other instruments as well, but the drums has always been his instrument and his way of expression. This is he first recording we worked on together. It was great fun and very special the both of us. I hope you enjoy the music as much as we had fun playing it in studio.

More Than a Pair
- do play! -

Jazz vocalist Pernilla Andersson and trumpet player Samuel Olsson met on a jam session in Gothenburg. Now, eight years later they have two kids, a townhouse and the jazz sextet More Than a Pair together. Their debut album - do play! - is best described as an entertaining hour of cozy, happy, sweet and swingin' vocal jazz.

- do play! - is an album with great variation as you will notice. The up-tempo version of Do-Re-Mi from Sound Of Music, where Pernilla like Maria, playfully takes care of the kids in the band, is followed by a slow and pleasant version of Secret Love in which Samuels arrangement somehow recalls it's first recording by Doris Day. In 1959 Siw Malmkvist had a big hit with Jazzbacillen, originally The Preacher written by Horace Silver. It's the albums only song in swedish and is here given a playful New Orleans beat. Two original compositions are also included on the album, Pernilla's Wander, co-written with Karin Rosenberg, a sensitive intimate ballad. The Too Late Bucket by Samuel is a fast blues in three keys describing the feeling of being late for work, (something that certainly never happened to him of course...) Loaded with some surprises, More Than a Pair does a version of Cole Porter's Anything Goes to round off do play!

Klassiker som ”Just squeeze me, but please don’t tease me”, ”I didn’t know what time it was” och ”Baby, won’t you please come home” (den senare sjungen ur en tonårsmorsas perspektiv) blandas med ganska okända ”I’ve got a heart full of rhythm (Armstrong-37) och Carins egen ”Do Be Mama”.
”What now my love?”.!

De senaste recensionerna:
Allaboutjazz.com, Okt-2015

Dalademokraten, Nov-2015

Två spår signerade Carin Lundin, sjungna med inneboende värme är Do Be Mama.....och den avslutande Tribute to Miss A.”

Anna Lundqvist Quintet - TEN

Before you I was almost fine (dB Productions).

The Nordan Suite bygger på starka inspirationskällor i möte.

Allabout Jazz Chris Mosey skriver:
Satori means "sudden enlightenment" in the Japanese Bhuddist discipline known as Zen. It's something you might be wise not to claim you had experienced for fear of the head priest fetching you a whack across the shoulders with his wooden staff while shouting something deep and meaningful such as "The pine tree in the courtyard!"

Once expressed, the term Satori becomes rational and meaningless. In the same way, the word Zen itself can mean all manner of things, including "a serving tray (with legs)," "a counter for pairs of chopsticks" and "profound meditation."

Swedish jazz pianist Lars Jansson presumably prefers the last-named definition but if so he should steel himself and his shoulders in particular for the approach of the head priest. Several of his albums have titles taken from Zen Buddhism but never before has he been so bold as to claim that he and his fellow musicians have experienced satori.

Classical flautist Magnus Båge, his principal collaborator here, prefers to take a different tack. "I believe the reason why this project sees the light is our mutual feeling and love for the lyrical aspect, both in life and in music. I have come to the realization that music is after all music."

The average listener might well decide to ignore all such spiritual agonizing and simply groove (or whatever it is that jazz fans do nowadays). For, while flirting occasionally with atonality and free form, notably on "The Typewriter," and while Båge's playing can be a trifle shrill sometimes, this music is in the main readily accessible and interesting, fun even (everyone laughs at the close of "It Worked"). It merits an audience way beyond the Nordic Area.

Here's how Lars Jansson sees his work: "Jazz music is one of the few human activities that succeeds in combining responsibility for the collective with individual freedom. The great challenge for every musician is to find his personal sound, to express his true self, and at the same time, to find his role in the group. Jazz music is a fantastic art form to help us on this continuous path."

To which one should merely add the warning: Beware the man with the big stick.

Nerkes Allehanda recenserar:

Image What a Joy
Men samtidigt delades fosterlandet i två läger.

/Kjell Stockhaus

Image Hit It!
Teemu Viinikainen Trio's second album Hit It! will be released on the jazz label Prophone. The trio's members include the superb guitarist and leader of the group Teemu Viinikainen, bass player Ville Herrala and drummer Mika Kallio. This entertaining album is a follow-up to the group's debut album Nyt! (Now!), released on the Prophone label in 2011. The official album release concert will take place on the Flame Jazz Cruise on February 1-2, 2014.

The trio's second album began to take shape during a tour in early 2013. All except two of the pieces on the album have been composed by Viinikainen himself. "I had written new material for the trio. At our performances I was able to try out these new pieces in front of a live audience," says Viinikainen about the process that led to the new album. By October 2013, there was a lot of material, some of which ended up on the new album when the trio began the recording process at Varistoteles Studio, owned by Markku Veijonsuo. "In addition to the compositions we had ready, we had improvisation sessions where we came up with many more good ideas for the album," Viinikainen adds.

This second album has a more energetic quality to it than the group's debut album. "I see the new album as another step forward for the trio," Viinikainen contemplates. The title track of the album, "Hit It!," is an up-tempo blues piece, composed by Viinikainen. The fun spirit of the piece is also illustrated by its working title "Häh, täh, hä?" ("What? Huh?"). The fourth track on the album "Kiitti J" ("Thanks, J") is a piece inspired by the legendary pianist Keith Jarrett, which, along with a few other compositions, took on a completely different form during the recording process. Joe Zawinul's classic piece "Directions" and Duke Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" can also be heard on the album.

The critically acclaimed guitarist Teemu Viinikainen has performed with numerous international jazz musicians, such as Joe Lovano, Vince Mendoza, Randy Brecker and Tim Hagans. The well-known jazz critic and author Stuart Nicholson places Viinikainen among "the top 20 jazz guitarists in the world." "Although the guitarist Teemu Viinikainen's spirit, virtuosity and powerful interpretive skills are undeniable, more than anything the listener is struck by his strong presence and sensitivity," describes a long-standing colleague, saxophonist Jukka Perko.

"I haven't done an honest day's work my entire life. All I've done is played." These were the words of pianist, organist and orchestra leader Kjell Öhman in response to receiving the newly created award "Studioräven" (Studio fox) in early spring 2013. He certainly is a studio fox, participating in over 8000 recordings in different constellations, and with this trio record, the sequel to his first of a year ago, that total continues to grow. The trio, consisting of Kjell Öhman, basist Hans Backenroth and drummer Joakim Ekberg, has played together the last eight years or so as featured group and as accompaniment in various situations. Kjell Öhman was recognized at an early age as a musical prodigy, and had already his first jingle on the board at the age of nine. Since then things have just continued rolling on, and today he is perhaps best known as orchestra leader on "Allsång på Skansen," a duty he has carried out for 17 years. He has among others accompanied vocalist´s as Alice Babs, Meta Roos & Claes Janson, He has played with all our jazz greats from stars like Arne Domnérus and Putte Wickman to many internationally known jazz greats. The key to having become so well liked over the years is probably due to Kjell Öhman's sense of humbleness. "It is important to hear the other musicians," he says, and that means not the least, vocalists. One becomes a kind of servant in a musical context. Even if Kjell Öhman plays first fiddle on this trio recording, he leaves both Hans Backenroth and Joakim Ekberg lots of room. This is how Kjell Öhman works, with a modest approach to the task at hand. He who has never done an honest day's work in his life other than play piano and organ. But oh! how he plays, for which we are ever grateful.

Isabella Lundgren - Vocals
Claes Janson - Vocals
Magnus Lindgren - Alto Flute
Carl Orrje - Grand Piano
Bengt Lindkvist - Keyboards
Anders Johnsson - Double Bass
Magnus Persson - Percussion

After playing together for nearly two decades, they thought (Luciano Mosetti & Anders Färdal) it was about time to finally release their first joint album - ELA. The two have invited their favorite musicians to experiment with various constellations; the trio, quartet, quintet and, perhaps their favorite, the intimate duo. Brazilian rhythms and jazz, American evergreens, a Swedish melody and ballads, as well as an original composition, make for a rich repertoire with a sophisticated feel-good flow.

Gone are the days when musicians would come into a recording studio with just an idea or a few notes written down on a napkin. This was true for many organ combos recording in the sixties. Today, an organ group that is truly ready to record comes well-rehearsed and as tight as possible. This is the case with Pierre Sward's Organ Jazz'n Soul Group with their deep-in-the-pocket grooves and funkified rhythms. These tracks are all solid contenders with terrific arrangements and exquisite soloing. Here are three musicians who represent the modern-day organ trio. It is the same instrumentation as the original organ trio of yesteryear but Pierre's group is much more diversified and schooled in multiple styles. They are playing the 'people's music' of today!
Without a doubt, this is one of the most enjoyable CDs I´ve heard in a long time - it´s the Organ Jazz´n Soul Group at its best!

"Most of the music on this album are new compositions. All the songs are dedicated in some way or another to family members, friends, and musicians, but most of all to the Japanese people. Koan, used in the Zen Rinzai sect of Buddhism, is a method of questions and answers to evaluate a monk's state of spirituality, such as "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" For me, music is a kind of Koan. You can of course analyse music in terms of form, tonality, rhythm, and chords, but the experience of it and how music affects people is beyond our rational understanding. Shikantaza is the highest, purest form of zazen, which is to rest in a state of brightly alert attention that is free of thoughts and objects. I have always loved and respected the Japanese people and their culture. I would like to honour the victims of the 2011 tsunami with this music."

Alpo Heinonen, piano
Ville Vannemaa, saxophones
Veikki Virkajärvi, electric guitar
Pasi Toivanen, bass guitar
Tomi Saikkonen, drums

Teija Sotikoff, vocals
Lotta Pitkänen, violin

This album is the quintet's second album after their debut album A Daydream Between Nightmares, released in 2010. According to the group's leader, Heinonen, this new album differs from the first album both musically and in the group members' division of labor. "My role in the making of this album was that of a composer and group leader more than that of a solo pianist. This time the soloists are the saxophonist Ville Vannemaa and guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi", says Heinonen. "A wonderful addition to the album is also the gently flowing vocals of Teija Sotikoff, not to mention the violin playing of Lotta Pitkänen", he continues.
According to Heinonen, the music on the album is closer to modern big band music played with a small ensemble than it is to traditional Finnish jazz. Although the Alpo Heinonen Quintet's music is influenced by different styles of music, it resists categorization. The compositions on the album vary in mood while still forming a coherent whole. "We are first and foremost a positive group, full of life. The catchy melodies are joyful without engulfing the listener in sugary sweetness. They are easily approachable already on the first listening", Heinonen contemplates. "On the quintet's live performances we will stay true to our style, but also venture out a bit further!" he promises.
The quintet's young musicians are multi-faceted, award-winning virtuosos in the Finnish jazz arena, currently performing both in Finland and abroad. Aapo Heinonen received the Pori Jazz Stipend in 2002 and won third place in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets competition in 2008. He works in the popular music as a musician, composer and arranger. The talented saxophonist Ville Vannemaa, presently attending the jazz program at the Sibelius Academy, has also received accolades, among which are the Finnish Saxophone Society's Josef Kaartinen Award in 2009 and the Erik Lindström Jazz Award in 2010. At the moment he plays among others in the ensembles Nina Mya and Fifth Avenue.

The guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi is also studying in the Sibelius Academy's jazz program. He also performs with his own Veikki Trio and the groups Polarcluster and Puf. The Quintet's bass player Pasi Toivanen performs with the Kadi Quartet and the group Linda. The drummer Tomi Saikkonen can be heard at the performances of for example the groups Soul Valpio and Bel Vel.

The music on this cd is an artistic statement of Thomas Fonnesbæk's bass playing and composing. Even though the members are the same as in Lars Jansson Trio this is Thomas' work of art. Paul Svanberg and myself have been "sidemen". Of course we have been part of the creative process in making this cd and it has been a lot of fun. Thomas Fonnesbæk's music has a lot of strong grooves, exciting compositions, nice chords to "blow" on and some beautiful melodies. Thomas Fonnesbæk is a warm, beautiful person and a great musician/composer. Hope you will enjoy the music on this cd. I do and I love it!

Electric bass: Fredrik Jonsson

Guitar: Max Schultz, Erik Söderlind
Drums and vibes: Calle Rasmusson
Percussion: Sebastian Notini.

Christina Gustafsson releases her third album, The Law of the Lady. She has followed her vision from the beginning to the end and the result is striking. After the critically acclaimed My Move and Moments Free she takes her artistic expression to a new level. In this project Christina works together with Calle Rasmusson, who's a member of Christina's band and who also works as an arranger with European orchestras and artists. Christina and Calle have arranged this album together in a very personal way.

Christina Gustafsson was born in Värmskog, Sweden, in 1970. She studied in 1994 - 96 at New York School of Music and 1996 - 99 at Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm. Christina is well-established on the Swedish jazz scene and is one of Sweden's most celebrated jazz singers. As a composer she has gained a lot of attention during the years and in 2007 she was awarded the SKAP scholarship. Together with Rigmor Gustafsson, Christina was also awarded the Anita O'Day price in 2012 with the motivation: "Rigmor and Christina Gustafsson belong to the elite among European female jazz singers."

"Two years ago when I started to write the music to The Law of the Lady I had an intention to say yes to all my ideas and not let practical details rule the artistic work. I followed my vision and when I was ready with my sketches and showed them for Calle Rasmusson, who's a drummer, arranger and co-producer on this album. He gave his point of view what directions the songs had. When all the songs were edited and arranged it was clear what kind of sound I wanted. Some of the lyrics were written before the music and in some cases I wrote the music first. A close collaboration with the text writers has been present all the time, and their flexibility, musicality and talent has made it possible to have the same starting point for music and lyrics. When all the musicians are in the studio and the rehearsal starts I feel so happy to be in a creative environment with all these wonderful musicians, with their personal ideas and fantastic playing, which make my ideas and vision to fly. The Law of the Lady is the result of my music experiences so far..."

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Peter Johannesson, drums; Max Schultz, guitar; Dan Berglund, bass; Jacob Karlzon, piano

Peter Johannesson and Max Schultz first met in 1977 and have since worked together in numerous musical situations. Peter's first CD "Sixtus" featuring Herbie Hancock was recorded in 1995. Max was also there and contributed several compositions. Peter's collaboration with Herbie Hancock has continued through the years with concerts, tours and television appearances. Peter's second CD "New Life" was made in 2005 with his band "Sixtus," which featured long time friends Peter Asplund, Håkan Broström, Magnus Lindgren, Karin Hammar, Daniel Tilling, and of course Max, among others. Everyone in the band contributed works on that recording. This eight-man band was and is still used often by their friend Svante Thuresson. Max was part of Svantes legendary "Jag är hip" recording from 1995, which featured texts of Beppe Wolgers. In 2008 "Johannesson & Schultz" was recorded together with Martin Sjöstedt on bass and their childhood idol Bobo Stenson on piano.

Now, years later Peter and Max's collaboration with bassist Dan Berglund has grown. Dan's energetic bass has been heard the world over with Esbjörn Svensson trio. Dan performs today with multiple grammy award winners Tonbruket. Peter, Max and Dan have played together extensively the past few years and accomplished something rather uncommon in jazz circles; composing music together. Peter often had a progression, a bassline or a "groove" which Dan built upon further which led Max into an idea, or vice versa. A comfortable creative atmosphere formed between these experienced musicians. Peter, Max and Dan's musical tastes are very broad, as witnessed by the choice of works on this recording. Björk, Coltrane, Stravinskij and even Max's childhood idol Jimi Hendrix are represented. Max took up the guitar after seeing Hendrix perform at Gröna Lund in Stockholm, 1970. Six years later, also at Gröna Lund Peter saw his own childhood idol Herbie Hancock play and shortly thereafter found himself in a lifelong friendship with this jazz giant. Pianist Jacob Karlzon is ever present in Peter, Max and Dan's compositions. On only one occasion have the four performed together on stage; at Bomans first Jazz Festival in Trosa 2011, and they connected from the very first tones. Peter felt a great desire to have Karlzon's fabulous tonal concept and driving piano style pervade this record. On May 30 Jacob arrived by plane from Germany after performing a series of concerts throughout Europe and went directly into the studio for the recording, where he sat down and played this incomparable piano performance. Just before Jacob was rushing away to the next flight that evening Max realized they had forgotten the beautiful new ballad, "The Letter." Jacob glanced through the sheet music for a few seconds and when Peter asked for a piano intro... Jacob played the enchanting introduction which proceeds "The Letter." For your enjoyment, here is Cause and Effect.

This album by the younger generation jazz band, the Maratone Quintet, represents the present sound of Scandinavian jazz at its best. The members of the band include trumpeter, Martti Vesala, guitarist, Markus Tiiro, pianist, Petri Rahikkala, bassist, Mikko Pellinen, and drummer, Juho Peltoniemi.

The long-time simmering album, comprising the sole compositions of the musicians in the Maratone Quintet, was recorded at the Kallio-Kuninkala studio in Järvenpää in June 2011. The disc was mixed by Hannu Lamminmäki during March 2012 and further mastered by Svante Forsbäck at Chartmakers at the end of spring 2012. The group are highly satisfied with the final results, the characteristic energy and voltage of their live performances has also been transferred successfully onto the recording.

Influences for the recording have been sought from a number of artists who are greatly appreciated by the quintet, including among others, Dave Douglas and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. A special feature of the Maratone Quintet, comprising a frontline formed out of the trumpet and guitar, also creates a unique and personal touch for the band. A large number of different techniques have been used in the instrumentation of the diverse album. An example of these techniques are different mutes for the trumpet, arco and pizzicato techniques for the bass, various percussion instruments, as well as the prepared piano that is used on the album's final track, Sleepless.

Both the band's tones and the musicians' unique solo power of expression have developed further from the previous released album, as a result of gigging events. All of the group members have also matured as composers, whilst additional nuances have been brought to the jamming. ´The listening to inspirational music and its further analysis functions as a spark for our compositions. I try to mirror my own sound over an inspirational model', says trumpeter, Martti Vesala, explaining the composition of the tracks to be found on the album.

In addition to domestic festivals, the Maratone Quintet has appeared at, among others, the Dølajazz -festival, organised in Lillehammer, Norway. In 2010, the group represented Finland at the Getxo International Jazz Competition, in the final of the jazz group competition.

The band's trumpeter, Martti Vesala (b. 1981), graduated from the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty, and has actively performed with, among others, the Martti Vesala Quintet. Bassist, Mikko Pellinen (b. 1983), is also a graduate of the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty and has performed in the Mikko Pellinen Mini Big Band and the HERD-trio. Petri Rahikkala (b. 1982) is also a student in the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty and has performed in such groups as, Heads and Tales and the Aleksi Ranta Group. Guitarist, Markus Tiiro (b. 1982), graduated from Helsinki Polytechnic and performs, among others, with the Markus Tiiro Quartet, as well as working as a teacher of guitar playing. Drummer, Juho Peltoniemi (b. 1982), is also a graduate of Helsinki Polytechnic. In addition to the Maratone Quintet, he has performed with Susanna Wahl and the Heads and Tales quartets, as well as performing teaching work.

LaGaylia Frazier, sång

Gästartister:
Hal Frazier, sång
Andy Pfeiler, gitarr
Jonas Johansen, trummor

Samarbete ledde även fram till den egna kompositionen "When We Say Goodbye".

Image You and the Night and the Music
The jazz singer, Ira Kaspi, releases an album of classics, accompanied by a symphony orchestra

The new album by the Finnish jazz singer, Ira Kaspi (b. 1964), who has enjoyed a long career, is a collection of delicate tones and strong interpretations. Ira, who graduated from the world famous Berkley College of Music in 1990, is accompanied on the album by the Jazz Diva Band and a symphony orchestra. The title of the album of jazz classics is "You and the Night and the Music" and will be released internationally through the Swedish label, Prophone Records, on the 26th April.

You and the Night and the Music contains tunes that are beloved by Ira, such as Call Me Irresponsible and The Gentle Rain. The songs are also sufficiently different from each other, so that she has been able to create a personal emotion around each one. The opening track of the album is Don't Go to Strangers, the success of which, in Ira's opinion, has surpassed all expectations, "The orchestration, especially in this track, is staggeringly beautiful - at least for me, the first notes grabbed me tightly."

Some of the songs were merely awaiting the right moment in time to be recorded, of which In the Wee Small Hours Of The Morning receives special mention. "The song inspires me. I sometimes just want to listen to it 20 times in a row, I just can't get enough of it." The album also contains two songs that are written by Ira and by her husband, the poppy bossa How Do You Keep Up the Light and the jazz blues The Best Is Yet To Be Coming.

The role played in the album project by Ira's husband, Ape Anttila, has been significant. He is not only the artistic producer and editor of the album, but also carries out tasks as the double bassist for the Jazz Diva Band, the composer and the song arranger, along with Mikko Hassinen. The other members of the jazz band are pianist Mikael Jakobsson, saxophonist Jussi Kannaste and drummer Markku Ounaskari. In addition to the quartet, the album also contains the music of the Lohja City Orchestra, led by conductor Esa Heikkilä. "The collaboration turned out to be very easy and the experience was unique. The orchestra played magnificently and the conductor Esa Heikkilä totally stole my heart," says Ira, describing the cooperation with the orchestra.

The album was recorded by Yle's studio engineer Speedy Saarinen and mastered and mixed by English Grammy award -winner Andrew Hallifax. "Andrew is bold and intuitive and in my opinion, the final result is very impressive. It's great when the album sounds dynamic -it's not all been compressed evenly, but the music really lives, as if it is been brought to life."

You and the Night and the Music, is the seventh album by Ira. The earlier albums have contained jazz classics, but the recording with the symphony orchestra has made the new album different. "I feel that I have also matured and developed over the years. In part, I believe that it is simply an age thing. Jazz music, unlike many other genres, thankfully appreciates life experiences."

SE-Quartet consists of David Ehrlin (saxophone and bass clarinet), Rasmus H Thomsen (piano), Antti Ojala (drums) and Patrik Hanson (upright bass). The group is a Nordic collaboration with Rasmus H Thomsen from Denmark and the other three band members from Eskilstuna, Arvika and Stockholm in Sweden.

The quartet met for the first time in Örebro in 2007 when Rasmus H Thomsen recorded his highly praised album SE. The four musicians instantly found each other from the first note and then the group SE-Quartet was born. They've have now played on 20 concerts on jazz clubs etc in Sweden and are established as a Nordic jazz quartet with a lyrical expression and a living interplay. It's a natural step for the group to release their music on a CD.

The music has a very lyrical and contemplative touch and in the CD booklet you can read about the thought the group have had regarding the different tunes. For example the piece Evening Rain is about rowing in the pouring rain and Safe in your Hands illustrates life in all its ups and downs. Rasmus and David has included a string quartet in four of the ten pieces which emphasizes the lyrical expression even more.

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Kjell Öhman, piano; Hans Backenroth, bass; Joakim Ekberg, drums.

This Swedish, splendid jazz trio here plays jazz classics such as Kelly's Blues (Oscar Peterson), The Duke (Dave Brubeck), My foolish heart (Victor Young/Ned Washington). Also included is the tune Shanna by the Swedish bass player and composer Georg Riedel.

Pianist, organist, composer, arranger and bandleader - Kjell Öhman may well be Sweden's most versatile musical personality. For the better part of fifty years his wide-ranging musicality has adapted itself to the most varying contexts. It seems that there is no genre with which he is not familiar, though he is happiest when he is seated at the piano, exploring traditional Oscar Peterson territory. But the fact that he has been inspired and influenced by Oscar Peterson certainly does not mean that he has slavishly followed the master. Kjell Öhman has gone his own way and has developed a highly personal style in which technical and harmonic aspects go hand in hand. He is one of that exclusive band of musicians who can exploit their instrument to the full.

Behind the double bass is the virtuoso Hans Backenroth whose style is a mix of Ray Brown, Oscar Pettifordand Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen. There is a wonderful vitality and swing in his bass lines and the fl ow ofnotes in his intricate solos is as pure as a mountain stream. Backenroth is one of the leading bass players in Sweden and his playing has been praised by colleagues like Jesper Lundgaard and George Mraz, musicians who really know what they are talking about.

Behind the drums is one of Sweden's best "time-keepers" in the person of "Jocke" Ekberg. Like Kjell Öhman, he has performed in all sorts of contexts including TV, radio, studio, recording, musicals, theatre and so on. He is, thus, a hugely competent drummer who brings rhythmic stability to the performance and who can add his emphases in the most elegant manner. He is a listening musician who can subtly adapt to what is going on around him. This eminent trio offers us jazz for the discerning palate. And fi ne jazz, as we know, has curative properties.

"Ack Värmeland Du Sköna" in the classic recording with Stan Getz and Bengt Hallberg was an early, and decisive jazz impulse for Bertil "Jonas" Jonasson. He naturally chose the tenor sax as his instrument and his choice was confirmed when, towards the end of the 1950s, he moved from Dals-Ed where he grew up to the much larger town of Borås. There he found musicians that he could perform with, like pianist Åke Johansson and drummer Pelle Hultén; but, above all, he made friends with fellow tenor-sax player Erik Norström who continues to be a major source of inspiration.

Despite a promising start Jonas had relatively few opportunities to perform jazz. Interest in jazz was on the decline and Jonas had to earn a living as a busy dance-band musician, touring throughout Sweden.

By the beginning of the 1990s he had tired of life as a touring musician and in his hometown of Västerås - where he had been living since 1974 - he took every possible opportunity to play jazz. His beautiful and melodic performances on the tenor sax soon won him a reputation elsewhere in Sweden and he was increasingly in demand to play at clubs, concert halls and in churches.

During his many years as a dance-band musician Jonas had also performed on the baritone sax, but today it might well be regarded as his principal instrument. The reason for this was Lars Gullin whom he had, of course, always admired and listened to but whose unique baritone performances and compositions had now acquired a much greater importance in his musical life.

Jonas' first solo recording was "Turn Around", released in 2000 and this was followed, in 2002, by "It's True". The title melody was a composition by Lars Gullin whose song, "I Hope It's Spring For You" was included in his 2006 album.

Over the years Jonas has spiced his concerts with more and more compositions by Lars Gullin and his dream has been to record an album featuring Gullin exclusively. Now the dream has been realized. In "Jonas plays Lars Gullin" he is joined by his favourite musicians; Krister Palmquist [guitar], Kjell Öhman [piano], Hans Backenroth [bass] and Joakim Ekberg [drums]. Another much-admired colleague is trumpeter Jan Allan who lends an extra savour of Lars Gullin in two of the disc's twelve compositions.

"Ale Möller is a veritable musical explorer and globetrotter. He plays an incredible number of instruments, most of which were built especially for him.Out of all his many barrier-breaking projects he has now chosen to realize his dream of collaborating with Bohuslän Big Band and of plumbing the depths with Ale's music arranged for jazz orchestra. No stone remains unturned and not a single idea has been left unexplored as Ale Möller and the band work together in seeking out the ultimate musical expression. And how they have succeeded! This disc contains everything any music lover could wish, from the sounds of a ballad played on the mediaeval crumhorn, through bagpipe sounding saxophones reminiscent of the Celtic tradition, to blues-like shuffle beats performed on an overtone drone-flute. The arrangements are tailor made and so are the choices of inspired soloists; everything fits together perfectly. Ale Möller and Bohuslän Big Band take us in their time machine on a musical journey over a large part of the globe, painting fantastic pictures of music as a border- crossing, peace-making and healing force."

"Per, myself and Henrik are the core of the original version of Funk Unit (with Nils Landgren) where we together created a raw, wild and unpredictable framework to our a little bit different view of the genre funk/jazz. Albums such as Redhorn and Live In Stockholm with Maceo Parker are examples of some of our influences that we have "marinated" in our long-standing collaboration with Michael Ruff, Randy Brecker, Brenda Russel etc. StudioTan have emerged out of our desire to continue building on our common experiences and create a collective musical frame. The project has been a room where you can improve as a musician and it all started when I played in a masterclass in Copenhagen. Per and Daniel played together there for the first time and it worked out fine. Shortly after that we went into the studio where we worked with several musical ideas and I wrote many tunes at this occasion. We toured in Denmark and Sweden 2006 under the name Rigskompet. After that we toured again in 2008 and was joined by Ida Sand, Anton Heger and Marius Neset from Jazzkamikaze. On this tour we played tunes by Henrik och Daniel and we continued to write more material for our first record. We decided to change the group's name to StudioTan. Our vision with StudioTan is to be a platform where we can meet and create great musical moments for ourself and the audience"

Teemu Viinikainen Trio

Teemu Viinikainen (b. 1975) is one of the most respected and successful guitarists in the Finnish jazz scene. In addition to Viinikainen, the album, which is titled "Now!" will include bassist, Ville Herrala, and drummer, Mika Kallio. With the exception of one track, all the compositions on the album are written by Viinikainen. "Nyt!" is the debut album of the trio.

According to Viinikainen, the recording, which took place at the Helsinki Varistoteles studio in May 2011, was unusually successful. The slow ripening album has been the contribution of two years of material and ideas on their part. Theinput also shows that Viinikainen, who had been searching for a new playingdirection, had all of the trio's rehearsals and gigs recorded over a period of two years, whereupon the results were examined in peace, seeking the right kind of composition and sound of the band.

The album was recorded over a period of two days, with the generation of a vast amount of material. "We played a lot of free improvisations, through which, we were able to look for and find ideas for the actual tracks that were composed", Viinikainen says.

The very large and rich drum set of Kallio, has, according to Viinikainen, had a great role in construction the assemblage. "The way and style in which Mika plays is exceptionally original and it is difficult to imagine anyone else could equal the contribution that he has made. Ville also immediately felt like the correct choice for this trio straight from his first tryout. His playing style is a wonderful blend of traditional jazz and modern, free improvisation."

Nyt! is the second album to be released by Viinikainen released under his own name. "The making of the album has been a large leap forward in my career and, at the same time, a jump into uncharted territory. It has, in part, also been, in many ways, a type of spiritual growth and, therefore, the tasks that were involved have been so significant.

Teemu Viinikainen has received a great deal of commendable praise in the past and has performed with a number of international jazz artists, such as Joe Lovano, Vince Mendoza, Randy Brecker and Tim Hagans. Viinikainen received the prestigious Finnish Jazz Federation Yrjö- jazz award 2010 and the Sony JazzAward 2004. He has also twice been nominated for the Teosto- award as part of the Perko-Pyysalo-Viinikainen trio. According to the well-known jazz critic and author Stuart Nicholson, Viinikainen is one of the 20 best jazz guitarists in the world.

Teemu Viinikainen Trio's "Nyt!" is the fifth release of the Prophone Finnish Jazz series that was launched in 2010. Prophone is a Swedish record label that began operations in 1990, the heart of which lies in Nordic jazz.

Image Groovy Moments & Melodies
Link to e-card

Groovy moments and Melodies is a recording project of Finnish jazz guitarist Tuomo J. Autio and Antti Rissanen, leader of The Great Helsinki Swing Big Band. It has its beginning as response to suggestion made by Pentti Lasanen, composer of jazz and entertainment music. The purpose was to make jazz spirited interpretations of popular compositions by composer/musician Rauno Lehtinen (1932-2006). The result is a unique compilation that includes arrangements for jazz guitar and big band.

The core of Groovy Moments and Melodies is formed by melodies composed by Rauno Lehtinen and arranged by Pentti Lasanen: Muistan kesän, Toiset meistä, and On hetki. Also included are classics, such as Bumbin and Boss City by Wes Montgomery, Besame Mucho by Consuelo Velazques, and Eleanor Rigby by John Lennon & Paul McCartney. New arrangements to these melodies have been made by Mika Mylläri, Heikki Koskinen, and Tuomo J. Autio.

Autio found it easy to get inspired from Lasanen's original idea to record Rauno Lehtinen's music, through personal experience: "Some years ago Rauno Lehtinen came unexpectedly to listen to my performance at a jazz club in Helsinki and requested to hear his composition On hetki. He had heard that this particular tune usually finished our encore repertoire with quite free interpretation. He listened very intently and came to thank me afterwards. When leaving he smiled and gestured approvingly. This encounter in mind, I felt that I had the right to interpret his melodies through my own jazz-like personality."

Autio continues on the planning stage of the recording: "As we built Groovy Moments and Melodies compilation I told that I would like to follow old time classic music concerto tradition where the soloist plays in cadences improvising freely on parts of melody themes. I also mentioned that I would like to play melodies through my inner musical memory in order to add more jazz-like rhythmics and melody variations."

Groovy Moments and Melodies was recorded at two concerts and one studio live session, and contains improvisation and creative interpretation. The momentary inspiration is audible in the studio session, too.

T H-Trio was founded in spring 2002 by pianist Daniel Fredar and double bass player Mattias Grönroos. They are both young, talented musicians on the Swedish jazz scene and they´ve graduated from A cademy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Sweden. The third member in TH-Trio is the drummer, Tommy Holmgren, who plays very picturesque and sensitive. TH-Trio is one of those new exciting Swedish groups. The trio does 70- 80 live concerts each year, mostly in Swedish churches, concert halls, chamber music society events and jazz clubs. The trio's music consists of tunes by Daniel and Swedish psalm in personal arrangements. Their music can be described as poetic chamber jazz where the unity, interplay and sound is important and improvisation is a vital part.

Dayna Stephens, one of the most interesting and musical saxophonists of his generation, stars in "A Week Ago Today", the second release of record label Prophone Finnish Jazz, seeing its international debut on February 23rd, 2011. André Sumelius, George Kontrafouris and Teemu Viinikainen round out the cast on this brilliant new release.

A Week Ago Today came about as visioned by drummer and producer, André Sumelius, who befriended Dayna Stephens while doing concerts and recordings together, and while working as musicians together in San Francisco, California and later on, in New York City. "I always thought it would be great to be able to bring Dayna to Finland someday to perform, he just simply lives and breathes music, whether playing the saxophone or bass; really just an amazing musician. When I finally got him to Helsinki, it was absolutely imperative to make a recording!", André recalls.

Sumelius also wanted guitarist Teemu Viinikainen on the recording, a musician André has worked with since he appeared on Sumelius' first recording. "I value Teemu's musically creative instincts, sense of swing and his fearlessness as a musician". Sumelius paired him up with the renowned Greek organist, George Kontrafouris, with whom Sumelius had performed with, even as far from home as Tokyo. "Kontrafouris was a great choice, bringing swing, soulfulness and even more momentum to the music. To quote him: 'The organ is not an instrument, it's a groove machine!'". One of Finland's more internationally known musicians, Mikko Innanen also makes a guest appearance on one track on the album.

Dayna Stephens' melodic compositions make up the majority of the music on "A Week Ago Today", but a few of Sumelius' compositions and one from Kontrafouris round out the production. Sumelius feels that all composers share the goal of composing songs that can be told as stories, retaining cohesion, and grab the interest of the listener.

Prophone, founded in 1990, is a Swedish record label with its heart in Scandinavian mainstream jazz.

4 AV 5 MÖJLIGA I BETYG I JÖNKÖPINGS-POSTEN

"Johannesson & Schultz is an album that triggers memories of those heady days in the late 1960s when fusion was all the rage. One that evokes distant echoes of Miles Davis' In A Silent Way (Columbia, 1969) and the work of guitarist Larry Coryell."..."Max Schultz...has emerged to become one of the most distinctive and original guitarists on the Swedish scene."..."...superb contribution (Bobo Stenson)"..."Johannesson & Schultz evokes nostalgia, but also takes the music further."

(Jönköpings-Posten)

It was in 1988 that Peter Johannesson invited his friend and mentor Herbie Hancock to join him on a tour of Sweden and Norway. Max Schultz naturally joined them on the tour. Peter and Max had been playing together for almost ten years at this time, initially at sporadic gigs but, from the mid 1980s, on a more regular basis. They are both self-taught musicians, something that is becoming much less usual among established musicians today.

The collaboration with Herbie Hancock continued with concerts between 1990 and 1995 and they recorded an album entitled Sixtus which was released as a CD in 2001 under Peter Johannesson's name, Max Schultz contributed with four of the compositions on this CD. Peter Johannesson's next CD, New Life, appeared in 2005, also with Max Schultz collaborating.

At this time Peter and Max performed a succession of concerts with another pianist, Bobo Stenson, who had been an idol of their youth. As they performed together the idea of recording an album with this constellation began to take form: Johannesson & Schultz together with Bobo Stenson. Over the course of a couple of years they produced a series of new compositions from which they made a careful selection for the album. This was recorded in 2008 and has resulted in the present CD. Also performing is bass-player Martin Sjöstedt who was the natural choice for this role. Martin's musicality and authority is much in demand today both in Swedish and international contexts, as will be evident from his performances on this disc.

Peter and Max, who have both performed on innumerable occasions with a diversity of different musicians often return to Bobo Stenson during their conversation; an important source of inspiration to them both as well as of vast importance to them and to musical life in Sweden. Johannesson & Schultz perform with invigorating simplicity and a beautifully down-to-earth presentation that one can listen to again and again - both in the form of this album and in concert.

(Nya Wermlands-Tidningen)

(Sofia Pettersson)

Berklee College of Music och Manhattan School of Music har lärt henne jazzen ordentligt.
