Beethoven for connoisseurs and musical spirits": This was Fono Forum's summary of Beethoven's Third Symphony with the RSO Vienna under Bertrand de Billy.

Now, OehmsClassics presents Beethoven's Second Symphony, likewise with de Billy and the RSO Vienna.

And for a luxurious encore, this recording includes a performance of Brahms' seldom-heard cantata Rinaldo, recorded live at the Salzburg Summer Riding School 2007. Johan Botha sings the tenor part - since then he has passionately promoted this work.

Bruckner's Symphony No. 0 was composed in the year 1869. !e composer himself later had a critical attitude towards it later on, even almost disowning it - probably due to negative criticisms. Symphony No. 0 is frequently claimed to have an unfinished appearance. !is is unjustified, for one should not underestimate the importance of this work for the later development of Bruckner as a symphonist.

The Study Symphony is a summing-up of the craftsmanship acquired by Anton Bruckner - it did not particularly serve the development of his own artistic profile. "It is", evaluates his biographer Matthias Hansen, "as if Bruckner - one last time - wanted to play through what he had learned, taking great trouble and care not to forget the slightest detail". Here, Bruckner tested the limits of the classical-romantic models, according to Hansen, "with a 'borrowed' looseness and flexibility, even with elegance" that he then dropped with the Symphony No.0.

The world premiere of the Eighth Symphony of Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) on 12 September 1910 in Munich under the composer's own direction was a triumph. As never before, the star conductor was also acknowledged by the public as a composer. The work had been composed four years prior to the premiere. "It is the largest that I have done so far. And so individual in content and form that one cannot write about it," the director of the Vienna Court Opera reported in August 1906. OehmsClassics presents the SACD as a live recording of the concerts performed at the Cologne Philharmonie in September 2011.

Tchaikovsky aff ectionately referred to his fi rst symphony as a "sin from his sweet youth". Th e work was only fi rst heard in its entirety on February 3, 1868 under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein. Praised by many reviewers for its wealth of melodies, the symphony unfairly stands in the shadows of the composer's "three great" symphonies, namely, the Fourth, the Fifth and above all, the Sixth. It can be heard in this recording from November 2009, which also includes several pieces from Tchakowsky's music to the play "Snowflakes".

The magic of genuine Russian folk music" - Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony bears the epithet "Little Russian" not due to its slight scale (although it is indeed the shortest of his six symphonies), but because many of its themes originate in "Little Russia". In the territory of the Tsar, this was the designation for a region known abroad as "Ruthenia": the present-day Ukraine. The recording is complemented by the famous Rococo Variations with the young cellist Leonard Elschenbroich.

OehmsClassics is proud to be able to continue this cycle - the recordings have received high praise and are already being considered reference recordings by some media representatives.

Following the publication of "Manfred" Symphony, which opened the Cologne Tchaikovsky cycle, the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne under Dmitri Kitajenko now presents the most popular of Tchaikovsky's Symphony, the image of his own soul drama: the "Pathetique". Kitajenkos Tchaikovsky competence is undisputed - the conductor, who was trained in his hometown of Leningrad and in Moscow at Leo Ginzburg and in Vienna with Hans Swarovsky is, since March 2009 as the orchestra's honorary conductor orchestra.

Image Joseph Kelemen plays Hans Leo Hassler
Both organs recorded on this CD resound optimally within their respecti-ve church interiors thanks to the outstanding acoustics there. The very different sizes of these interiors are ultimately responsible for the diverging interpretations on the two instruments. The recurring long note values of the Gregorian chant in the Mass awaken the feeling of timelessness – here, the tremendous monumentality of the performances can make a maximum effect within the large space of the Klosterneu-burg Monastery Church. The smaller Gabelbacher organ evokes a nimble, chamber-music orientated manner of playing which conveys to the listener a certain closeness to the events within the much smaller space. Hassler‘s keyboard music assumes that the player will use a single manual, and this consideration was observed on the present recording; solo registrations were as yet unknown in Hassler’s time. Of course, “sparing” registrations were occasionally used on the large organ of Klosterneuburg.

This June, OehmsClassics can boast of another fi nale: pianist Michael Korstick's cycle of Beethoven Sonatas will now be complete with the release of Volume 11. Th e works presented here have been available for a number of years, but were included in this cycle not only to make it "whole". All reviewers were of one mind that it is fully acceptable to include reference recordings in such a collection, even if they have been presented on the market before.

The present recording of works by Jerome and Jacob jun. Praetorius (father and son) takes the audience on the threshold of the Renaissance to the early Baroque, with the beginnings of the North German organ music. In true quality Joseph Kelemen plays the organ in Scherer Tangermiinde. This organ of the St. Stephen's Church of the Hanseatic city Tangermiinde was built by Hans Scherer d. J. together with his brother Fritz in the years 1623/24 as a gift from the city of Hamburg. Sieverfügt in three manuals and pedal, 32 registers; approximately 50% of the pipework (including all front pipes) as the carved housing are original.
