"I haven't done an honest day's work my entire life. All I've done is played." These were the words of pianist, organist and orchestra leader Kjell Öhman in response to receiving the newly created award "Studioräven" (Studio fox) in early spring 2013. He certainly is a studio fox, participating in over 8000 recordings in different constellations, and with this trio record, the sequel to his first of a year ago, that total continues to grow. The trio, consisting of Kjell Öhman, basist Hans Backenroth and drummer Joakim Ekberg, has played together the last eight years or so as featured group and as accompaniment in various situations. Kjell Öhman was recognized at an early age as a musical prodigy, and had already his first jingle on the board at the age of nine. Since then things have just continued rolling on, and today he is perhaps best known as orchestra leader on "Allsång på Skansen," a duty he has carried out for 17 years. He has among others accompanied vocalist´s as Alice Babs, Meta Roos & Claes Janson, He has played with all our jazz greats from stars like Arne Domnérus and Putte Wickman to many internationally known jazz greats. The key to having become so well liked over the years is probably due to Kjell Öhman's sense of humbleness. "It is important to hear the other musicians," he says, and that means not the least, vocalists. One becomes a kind of servant in a musical context. Even if Kjell Öhman plays first fiddle on this trio recording, he leaves both Hans Backenroth and Joakim Ekberg lots of room. This is how Kjell Öhman works, with a modest approach to the task at hand. He who has never done an honest day's work in his life other than play piano and organ. But oh! how he plays, for which we are ever grateful.

En pärla här, liksom Willow weep for me.

Bara "Willow weep for me" har fått ett annorlunda arr, i bluesfunkig stil.

(Jönköpings-Posten)

Lars Jansson, piano; Thomas Fonnesbaek, bass; Paul Svanberg, drums.

Whats new about playing old standards? Firstly. It is probably up to you listener to judge. For me personally, I have reached a point in my career where it feels natural and challenging to play this great tunes that we played and recorded by some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. Perhaps I have too much respect for them throughout the years. Mostly, though, I have been focusing on playing and recording my own music intil now. If I can express myself in the same way playing standards as I play my own music, then I an happy. I like to keep on learning from the great tradition and develop my own way of expression through that knowledge. I have know Thomas Fonnesbaek since he was a student, but we only started to playing together half a year ago. He is warm, positive person, and a creative musician to work with. He really adds great spirit in the studio and in our live performance. I gave my sun Paul Svanberg his first drum set when he was four years old. He play some other instruments as well, but the drums has always been his instrument and his way of expression. This is he first recording we worked on together. It was great fun and very special the both of us. I hope you enjoy the music as much as we had fun playing it in studio.

Samarbete ledde även fram till den egna kompositionen "When We Say Goodbye".

"Asplund, a gifted post-bop Swedish trumpeter and flügelhornist, shines in this lyrical, sensitive, yet robust and classy Leonard Berstein tribute."
(The Irish Times)

Leonard Bernstein inspirerar mig.

Image What a Joy
Men samtidigt delades fosterlandet i två läger.

/Kjell Stockhaus

Image Hit It!
Teemu Viinikainen Trio's second album Hit It! will be released on the jazz label Prophone. The trio's members include the superb guitarist and leader of the group Teemu Viinikainen, bass player Ville Herrala and drummer Mika Kallio. This entertaining album is a follow-up to the group's debut album Nyt! (Now!), released on the Prophone label in 2011. The official album release concert will take place on the Flame Jazz Cruise on February 1-2, 2014.

The trio's second album began to take shape during a tour in early 2013. All except two of the pieces on the album have been composed by Viinikainen himself. "I had written new material for the trio. At our performances I was able to try out these new pieces in front of a live audience," says Viinikainen about the process that led to the new album. By October 2013, there was a lot of material, some of which ended up on the new album when the trio began the recording process at Varistoteles Studio, owned by Markku Veijonsuo. "In addition to the compositions we had ready, we had improvisation sessions where we came up with many more good ideas for the album," Viinikainen adds.

This second album has a more energetic quality to it than the group's debut album. "I see the new album as another step forward for the trio," Viinikainen contemplates. The title track of the album, "Hit It!," is an up-tempo blues piece, composed by Viinikainen. The fun spirit of the piece is also illustrated by its working title "Häh, täh, hä?" ("What? Huh?"). The fourth track on the album "Kiitti J" ("Thanks, J") is a piece inspired by the legendary pianist Keith Jarrett, which, along with a few other compositions, took on a completely different form during the recording process. Joe Zawinul's classic piece "Directions" and Duke Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" can also be heard on the album.

The critically acclaimed guitarist Teemu Viinikainen has performed with numerous international jazz musicians, such as Joe Lovano, Vince Mendoza, Randy Brecker and Tim Hagans. The well-known jazz critic and author Stuart Nicholson places Viinikainen among "the top 20 jazz guitarists in the world." "Although the guitarist Teemu Viinikainen's spirit, virtuosity and powerful interpretive skills are undeniable, more than anything the listener is struck by his strong presence and sensitivity," describes a long-standing colleague, saxophonist Jukka Perko.

After playing together for nearly two decades, they thought (Luciano Mosetti & Anders Färdal) it was about time to finally release their first joint album - ELA. The two have invited their favorite musicians to experiment with various constellations; the trio, quartet, quintet and, perhaps their favorite, the intimate duo. Brazilian rhythms and jazz, American evergreens, a Swedish melody and ballads, as well as an original composition, make for a rich repertoire with a sophisticated feel-good flow.

Gone are the days when musicians would come into a recording studio with just an idea or a few notes written down on a napkin. This was true for many organ combos recording in the sixties. Today, an organ group that is truly ready to record comes well-rehearsed and as tight as possible. This is the case with Pierre Sward's Organ Jazz'n Soul Group with their deep-in-the-pocket grooves and funkified rhythms. These tracks are all solid contenders with terrific arrangements and exquisite soloing. Here are three musicians who represent the modern-day organ trio. It is the same instrumentation as the original organ trio of yesteryear but Pierre's group is much more diversified and schooled in multiple styles. They are playing the 'people's music' of today!
Without a doubt, this is one of the most enjoyable CDs I´ve heard in a long time - it´s the Organ Jazz´n Soul Group at its best!

Trio X
Lennart Simonsson, piano
Per V Johansson, double bass, electric bass
Joakim Ekberg, drums

Trio X is one of Sweden's foremost improvisational groups. The trio's distinctive feature is exploratory and boundarycrossing music, and the experienced musicians find inspiration in many genres. Lennart Simonsson, Per V Johansson, and Joakim Ekberg started collaborating in 2002, and since then they have made several recordings, worked with numerous well-known artists, and toured in Sweden and abroad.

"In our efforts to find repertoire, we noticed that the principle for selection is rather similar regardless of genre. You play the music you like; playing without pleasure seldom leads to good music. It's sometimes said that jazz musicians use a composition merely as an excuse to improvise. There's a good deal of truth to that statement, but the improvisation is nevertheless greatly influenced by the basic material. In some cases we also allow ourselves considerable artistic license, but we usually try to harmonize with and sometimes even augment the composer's original idea."

Koan - Lars Jansson Trio

Lars Jansson, piano
Thomas Fonnesbæk, bass

"Most of the music on this album are new compositions. All the songs are dedicated in some way or another to family members, friends, and musicians, but most of all to the Japanese people. Koan, used in the Zen Rinzai sect of Buddhism, is a method of questions and answers to evaluate a monk's state of spirituality, such as "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" For me, music is a kind of Koan. You can of course analyse music in terms of form, tonality, rhythm, and chords, but the experience of it and how music affects people is beyond our rational understanding. Shikantaza is the highest, purest form of zazen, which is to rest in a state of brightly alert attention that is free of thoughts and objects. I have always loved and respected the Japanese people and their culture. I would like to honour the victims of the 2011 tsunami with this music."

Alpo Heinonen, piano

Veikki Virkajärvi, electric guitar

Tomi Saikkonen, drums

Teija Sotikoff, vocals
Lotta Pitkänen, violin

This album is the quintet's second album after their debut album A Daydream Between Nightmares, released in 2010. According to the group's leader, Heinonen, this new album differs from the first album both musically and in the group members' division of labor. "My role in the making of this album was that of a composer and group leader more than that of a solo pianist. This time the soloists are the saxophonist Ville Vannemaa and guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi", says Heinonen. "A wonderful addition to the album is also the gently flowing vocals of Teija Sotikoff, not to mention the violin playing of Lotta Pitkänen", he continues.
According to Heinonen, the music on the album is closer to modern big band music played with a small ensemble than it is to traditional Finnish jazz. Although the Alpo Heinonen Quintet's music is influenced by different styles of music, it resists categorization. The compositions on the album vary in mood while still forming a coherent whole. "We are first and foremost a positive group, full of life. The catchy melodies are joyful without engulfing the listener in sugary sweetness. They are easily approachable already on the first listening", Heinonen contemplates. "On the quintet's live performances we will stay true to our style, but also venture out a bit further!" he promises.
The quintet's young musicians are multi-faceted, award-winning virtuosos in the Finnish jazz arena, currently performing both in Finland and abroad. Aapo Heinonen received the Pori Jazz Stipend in 2002 and won third place in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets competition in 2008. He works in the popular music as a musician, composer and arranger. The talented saxophonist Ville Vannemaa, presently attending the jazz program at the Sibelius Academy, has also received accolades, among which are the Finnish Saxophone Society's Josef Kaartinen Award in 2009 and the Erik Lindström Jazz Award in 2010. At the moment he plays among others in the ensembles Nina Mya and Fifth Avenue.

The guitarist Veikki Virkajärvi is also studying in the Sibelius Academy's jazz program. He also performs with his own Veikki Trio and the groups Polarcluster and Puf. The Quintet's bass player Pasi Toivanen performs with the Kadi Quartet and the group Linda. The drummer Tomi Saikkonen can be heard at the performances of for example the groups Soul Valpio and Bel Vel.

The music on this cd is an artistic statement of Thomas Fonnesbæk's bass playing and composing. Even though the members are the same as in Lars Jansson Trio this is Thomas' work of art. Paul Svanberg and myself have been "sidemen". Of course we have been part of the creative process in making this cd and it has been a lot of fun. Thomas Fonnesbæk's music has a lot of strong grooves, exciting compositions, nice chords to "blow" on and some beautiful melodies. Christina Gustafsson releases her third album, The Law of the Lady. She has followed her vision from the beginning to the end and the result is striking. After the critically acclaimed My Move and Moments Free she takes her artistic expression to a new level. In this project Christina works together with Calle Rasmusson, who's a member of Christina's band and who also works as an arranger with European orchestras and artists. Christina and Calle have arranged this album together in a very personal way.

Christina Gustafsson was born in Värmskog, Sweden, in 1970. She studied in 1994 - 96 at New York School of Music and 1996 - 99 at Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm. Christina is well-established on the Swedish jazz scene and is one of Sweden's most celebrated jazz singers. As a composer she has gained a lot of attention during the years and in 2007 she was awarded the SKAP scholarship. Together with Rigmor Gustafsson, Christina was also awarded the Anita O'Day price in 2012 with the motivation: "Rigmor and Christina Gustafsson belong to the elite among European female jazz singers."

"Two years ago when I started to write the music to The Law of the Lady I had an intention to say yes to all my ideas and not let practical details rule the artistic work. I followed my vision and when I was ready with my sketches and showed them for Calle Rasmusson, who's a drummer, arranger and co-producer on this album. He gave his point of view what directions the songs had. When all the songs were edited and arranged it was clear what kind of sound I wanted. Some of the lyrics were written before the music and in some cases I wrote the music first. A close collaboration with the text writers has been present all the time, and their flexibility, musicality and talent has made it possible to have the same starting point for music and lyrics. When all the musicians are in the studio and the rehearsal starts I feel so happy to be in a creative environment with all these wonderful musicians, with their personal ideas and fantastic playing, which make my ideas and vision to fly. The Law of the Lady is the result of my music experiences so far..."

(Svenska Dagbladet)

Peter Johannesson, drums; Max Schultz, guitar; Dan Berglund, bass; Jacob Karlzon, piano

Peter Johannesson and Max Schultz first met in 1977 and have since worked together in numerous musical situations. Peter's first CD "Sixtus" featuring Herbie Hancock was recorded in 1995. Max was also there and contributed several compositions. Peter's collaboration with Herbie Hancock has continued through the years with concerts, tours and television appearances. Peter's second CD "New Life" was made in 2005 with his band "Sixtus," which featured long time friends Peter Asplund, Håkan Broström, Magnus Lindgren, Karin Hammar, Daniel Tilling, and of course Max, among others. Everyone in the band contributed works on that recording. This eight-man band was and is still used often by their friend Svante Thuresson. Max was part of Svantes legendary "Jag är hip" recording from 1995, which featured texts of Beppe Wolgers. In 2008 "Johannesson & Schultz" was recorded together with Martin Sjöstedt on bass and their childhood idol Bobo Stenson on piano.

Now, years later Peter and Max's collaboration with bassist Dan Berglund has grown. Dan's energetic bass has been heard the world over with Esbjörn Svensson trio. Dan performs today with multiple grammy award winners Tonbruket. Peter, Max and Dan have played together extensively the past few years and accomplished something rather uncommon in jazz circles; composing music together. Peter often had a progression, a bassline or a "groove" which Dan built upon further which led Max into an idea, or vice versa. A comfortable creative atmosphere formed between these experienced musicians. Peter, Max and Dan's musical tastes are very broad, as witnessed by the choice of works on this recording. Björk, Coltrane, Stravinskij and even Max's childhood idol Jimi Hendrix are represented. Max took up the guitar after seeing Hendrix perform at Gröna Lund in Stockholm, 1970. Six years later, also at Gröna Lund Peter saw his own childhood idol Herbie Hancock play and shortly thereafter found himself in a lifelong friendship with this jazz giant. Pianist Jacob Karlzon is ever present in Peter, Max and Dan's compositions. On only one occasion have the four performed together on stage; at Bomans first Jazz Festival in Trosa 2011, and they connected from the very first tones. Peter felt a great desire to have Karlzon's fabulous tonal concept and driving piano style pervade this record. On May 30 Jacob arrived by plane from Germany after performing a series of concerts throughout Europe and went directly into the studio for the recording, where he sat down and played this incomparable piano performance. Just before Jacob was rushing away to the next flight that evening Max realized they had forgotten the beautiful new ballad, "The Letter." Jacob glanced through the sheet music for a few seconds and when Peter asked for a piano intro... Jacob played the enchanting introduction which proceeds "The Letter." For your enjoyment, here is Cause and Effect.

Image Finding The Way
This album by the younger generation jazz band, the Maratone Quintet, represents the present sound of Scandinavian jazz at its best. The members of the band include trumpeter, Martti Vesala, guitarist, Markus Tiiro, pianist, Petri Rahikkala, bassist, Mikko Pellinen, and drummer, Juho Peltoniemi.

The long-time simmering album, comprising the sole compositions of the musicians in the Maratone Quintet, was recorded at the Kallio-Kuninkala studio in Järvenpää in June 2011. The disc was mixed by Hannu Lamminmäki during March 2012 and further mastered by Svante Forsbäck at Chartmakers at the end of spring 2012. The group are highly satisfied with the final results, the characteristic energy and voltage of their live performances has also been transferred successfully onto the recording.

Influences for the recording have been sought from a number of artists who are greatly appreciated by the quintet, including among others, Dave Douglas and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio. A special feature of the Maratone Quintet, comprising a frontline formed out of the trumpet and guitar, also creates a unique and personal touch for the band. A large number of different techniques have been used in the instrumentation of the diverse album. An example of these techniques are different mutes for the trumpet, arco and pizzicato techniques for the bass, various percussion instruments, as well as the prepared piano that is used on the album's final track, Sleepless.

Both the band's tones and the musicians' unique solo power of expression have developed further from the previous released album, as a result of gigging events. All of the group members have also matured as composers, whilst additional nuances have been brought to the jamming. ´The listening to inspirational music and its further analysis functions as a spark for our compositions. I try to mirror my own sound over an inspirational model', says trumpeter, Martti Vesala, explaining the composition of the tracks to be found on the album.

In addition to domestic festivals, the Maratone Quintet has appeared at, among others, the Dølajazz -festival, organised in Lillehammer, Norway. In 2010, the group represented Finland at the Getxo International Jazz Competition, in the final of the jazz group competition.

The band's trumpeter, Martti Vesala (b. 1981), graduated from the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty, and has actively performed with, among others, the Martti Vesala Quintet. Bassist, Mikko Pellinen (b. 1983), is also a graduate of the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty and has performed in the Mikko Pellinen Mini Big Band and the HERD-trio. Petri Rahikkala (b. 1982) is also a student in the Sibelius Academy Jazz Faculty and has performed in such groups as, Heads and Tales and the Aleksi Ranta Group. Guitarist, Markus Tiiro (b. 1982), graduated from Helsinki Polytechnic and performs, among others, with the Markus Tiiro Quartet, as well as working as a teacher of guitar playing. Drummer, Juho Peltoniemi (b. 1982), is also a graduate of Helsinki Polytechnic. In addition to the Maratone Quintet, he has performed with Susanna Wahl and the Heads and Tales quartets, as well as performing teaching work.

Image You and the Night and the Music
The jazz singer, Ira Kaspi, releases an album of classics, accompanied by a symphony orchestra

The new album by the Finnish jazz singer, Ira Kaspi (b. 1964), who has enjoyed a long career, is a collection of delicate tones and strong interpretations. Ira, who graduated from the world famous Berkley College of Music in 1990, is accompanied on the album by the Jazz Diva Band and a symphony orchestra. The title of the album of jazz classics is "You and the Night and the Music" and will be released internationally through the Swedish label, Prophone Records, on the 26th April.

You and the Night and the Music contains tunes that are beloved by Ira, such as Call Me Irresponsible and The Gentle Rain. The songs are also sufficiently different from each other, so that she has been able to create a personal emotion around each one. The opening track of the album is Don't Go to Strangers, the success of which, in Ira's opinion, has surpassed all expectations, "The orchestration, especially in this track, is staggeringly beautiful - at least for me, the first notes grabbed me tightly."

Some of the songs were merely awaiting the right moment in time to be recorded, of which In the Wee Small Hours Of The Morning receives special mention. "The song inspires me. I sometimes just want to listen to it 20 times in a row, I just can't get enough of it." The album also contains two songs that are written by Ira and by her husband, the poppy bossa How Do You Keep Up the Light and the jazz blues The Best Is Yet To Be Coming.

The role played in the album project by Ira's husband, Ape Anttila, has been significant. He is not only the artistic producer and editor of the album, but also carries out tasks as the double bassist for the Jazz Diva Band, the composer and the song arranger, along with Mikko Hassinen. The other members of the jazz band are pianist Mikael Jakobsson, saxophonist Jussi Kannaste and drummer Markku Ounaskari. In addition to the quartet, the album also contains the music of the Lohja City Orchestra, led by conductor Esa Heikkilä. "The collaboration turned out to be very easy and the experience was unique. The orchestra played magnificently and the conductor Esa Heikkilä totally stole my heart," says Ira, describing the cooperation with the orchestra.

The album was recorded by Yle's studio engineer Speedy Saarinen and mastered and mixed by English Grammy award -winner Andrew Hallifax. "Andrew is bold and intuitive and in my opinion, the final result is very impressive. It's great when the album sounds dynamic -it's not all been compressed evenly, but the music really lives, as if it is been brought to life."

You and the Night and the Music, is the seventh album by Ira. The earlier albums have contained jazz classics, but the recording with the symphony orchestra has made the new album different. "I feel that I have also matured and developed over the years. In part, I believe that it is simply an age thing. Jazz music, unlike many other genres, thankfully appreciates life experiences."

SE-Quartet consists of David Ehrlin (saxophone and bass clarinet), Rasmus H Thomsen (piano), Antti Ojala (drums) and Patrik Hanson (upright bass). The group is a Nordic collaboration with Rasmus H Thomsen from Denmark and the other three band members from Eskilstuna, Arvika and Stockholm in Sweden.

The quartet met for the first time in Örebro in 2007 when Rasmus H Thomsen recorded his highly praised album SE. The four musicians instantly found each other from the first note and then the group SE-Quartet was born. They've have now played on 20 concerts on jazz clubs etc in Sweden and are established as a Nordic jazz quartet with a lyrical expression and a living interplay. It's a natural step for the group to release their music on a CD.

The music has a very lyrical and contemplative touch and in the CD booklet you can read about the thought the group have had regarding the different tunes. For example the piece Evening Rain is about rowing in the pouring rain and Safe in your Hands illustrates life in all its ups and downs. Rasmus and David has included a string quartet in four of the ten pieces which emphasizes the lyrical expression even more.
