Image Schlagt sie tot! (2CD)
Schlagt sie tot! is an opera about radical change and religious fanaticism. It paints a multifaceted portrait of a complex figure who transformed the world, namely the controversial catalyst of the Reformation, Martin Luther. He was a charismatic, uncompromising artistic personality, at times hateful and in constant struggle with his inner demons. Five hundred year old events, not unlike the politics of our own age, are brought to life in Bo Holten’s and Eva Sommestad Holten’s music drama, which reflects human emotion in a society set ablaze by the fire of change.

”En magisk drömvärld där soloinstrumentet är sagans hjälteväsen.” (Martin Nyström, Dagens Nyheter)

Bent Sørensen’s distinctive music thrives on the intangible, from atmospheres and feelings to memories and dreams. This recording assembles three recent concertos from the Grawemeyer Award-winning composer performed by distinguished Nordic soloists, beginning with a second piano concerto played by its dedicatee and inspiration, Leif Ove Andsnes. Sørensen’s clarinet concerto for Martin Fro¨st is inspired by the scents of Spanish poetry, while his trumpet concerto for Tine Thing Helseth feeds of his constant obsession with the beauty and vulnerability of Venice. Each is highly evocative and filled with Sørensen’s etched beauty.

Image The Four Seasons After Vivaldi
This is Vivaldi for the 21st century. At its heart, the album is a conversation between past and present, between classical composition and new discoveries, between composers over time spans. Danish composer Karl Aage Rasmussen (b. 1947) has always been keen on exploring our experience of time and movement. Building bridges between cultures and traditions, he here sheds new light on original compositions by Vivaldi and Respighi, written during his period as composer-in-residence for Danish National Baroque Orchestra Concerto Copenhagen.

• Carl Nielsen’s Woodwind Quintet from 1922 is a major work in the international chamber music literature. On this new release the Quintet is featured together with other chamber music works by the composer involving one or more wind players. The music selection ranges in time from Nielsen’s early youth to his mature mastery, and the selection also includes three small pieces from the music for The Mother, including the classic The Fog is Lifting.

• When Carl Nielsen composed his Woodwind Quintet, the genre was only then being rediscovered after hardly having been cultivated since classics like Reicha and Danzi. It may be that the Dane’s experiment with unaccustomed colourings and extended solo passages stemmed partly from a wish to write music that suited the individual temperaments of the five musicians who gave the work its first performance – indeed to some extent it portrayed them. This has at any rate not prevented wind quintets all over the world from playing and recording this modern masterpiece.

• The chamber music works on this CD have been recorded by the Danish Trio Ondine and the Diamond Ensemble.

Image The Emperor's New Clothes
Bo Holten has composed more than 100 works including symphonies, solo concertos, works for chorus and orchestra, operas, and musicals. He has also written works for chamber ensembles, song cycles, and pieces for percussion ensemble, as well as scores for films and television series. He is regarded as Denmark’s most prolific composer of lyric theatre and is an internationally renowned conductor. This newly-recorded retrospective includes three of his most cherished concert works: a charismatic concert opera based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, a touching song cycle to evocative poetry by Sophus Claussen and an oboe concerto inspired by the instrument’s unique lyrical capabilities. All three reveal Holten’s characteristic combination of wit and profundity, all the more so under his own musical direction.

Unlike many of his radical new music colleagues, Karl-Aage Rasmussen (b. 1947) has had a great affection for older music, especially that of the Italian Baroque era. In this new programme of solo concertos by Rasmussen, he extends his musical explorations of the solo concerto focusing on the relationship between the individual and the community – an archetypal disparity that for centuries has lent the genre a special fascination for composers and audiences alike. Karl Aage Rasmussen graduated from the Aarhus Academy of Music in 1971, where he was appointed Professor in Composition in 1988. Many of his works use pre-existing material woven into a dense musical montage. Words like ‘de-composing’ and ‘re-composing’ seem fit, and in later years, this interest has resulted in the arrangement and completion of music by Schumann and Schubert. While his early works focused on the individual detail of these montages, he later became increasingly concerned with a sense of momentum and in exploring our experience of time and movement.

Image Singing Secrets
A professor for many years, Per Nørgård has been loudly praised and awarded great prizes around the world. His music, though, can be relatively quiet in its exterior and searching by nature. Per Nørgård holds his senses open to signals from the planet and the cosmic miracle. This Danish Nestor works not so much for deafening fanfares or death by double bar lines — so, ‘when do you begin to get things finished?’, as his mother once sighed! For this reason his pieces may require a little extra attention. A work by Nørgård comes to life when its listeners attend to it with just the right amount of openness. Our receptiveness is rewarded tenfold as pleasure in responding to the works, and in the longer term by a generally enhanced attentiveness. Singing Secrets is a thoughtful and profoundly lyrical album which is both a strikingly original statement and a splendid addition to Dacapo Records’ extensive Norgard catalogue. The program demonstrates the range of Norgard’s compositions, with chamber and vocal pieces illustrating some of the distinctive steps of his musical journey.

Bent Sørensen’s music can feel like the product of a dream, at once vague and precise, present and intangible. With Rosenbad and Pantomime, the recording of Sørensen’s trilogy Papillons is complete. This is music filled with the ebb and flow of fear, hope and nostalgia and unified by common musical material through the same anchoring piano part across its movements. All works including the Fantasia Appassionata for solo piano are written for Katrine Gislinge, one of the most significant pianists in Scandinavia, here accompanied by Esbjerg Ensemble and the Stenhammar Quartet.

Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974) studied in Paris in the 1920s and became a pioneer of the Neo-Classicist style in Danish music. Lively and inventive, the music on this disc spans the years 1933-1940 and shows Riisager both as a composer inspired by the Neo-Baroque and as an exponent of a decidedly Danish sound. Previously released on CD, this acclaimed recording has now been given new life in outstanding SACD sound quality.

As a young man, Riisager studied political science, but at the same time took private lessons in music theory from Danish composers Otto Malling and Peder Gram. When he had completed his law studies he went to Paris for further studies in music theory with Albert Roussel and others. The years in Paris were crucial to his activities as a composer. He cultivated a French-inspired treatment of instrumentation and timbre, and remained a devotee of "Gallic" clarity in music. Lightness and gaiety are characteristic of his smallest works, but his elegance and masterly treatment of the instruments function brilliantly even in the largest works. Best known are his ballet works 'Etudes', 'Slaraffenland', 'Qarrtsiluni', which were created in collaboration with the great Danish choreographer Harald Lander, and the ballet 'Tolv med Posten' in collaboration with Børge Ralov. Many of his children's songs are still on the lips of Danes. Riisager was a cultured, intellectual figure and a lively debater. The fact that he drew inspiration from Central European Modernism was of great importance to Danish music. Along with other contemporary Danish composers who had studied abroad he definitively broke with Romanticism as well as the epigonism of Carl Nielsen's disciples.

Håkan Hardenberger is known as the greatest trumpet soloist today - and it is not only for his virtuosity that he is held in such high regard. Alongside the classical repertory, Hardenberger is the most noted pioneer of new trumpet works. Håkan Hardenberger performs with the world's leading orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Wiener Philharmoniker, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, London Symphony, The Philharmonia, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and NHK Symphony Orchestra. Conductors he regularly collaborates with include Pierre Boulez, Mikko Franck, Alan Gilbert, Daniel Harding, Paavo Järvi, Ingo Metzmacher, Andris Nelsons, Esa-Pekka Salonen, John Storgårds, Thomas Dausgaard and David Zinman. The works written for, and championed by Hardenberger, stand as key highlights in the repertory.

This recording offers an unusual selection of Dietrich Buxtehude's vocal music performed by the Grammy-winning ensemble Theatre of Voices conducted by Paul Hillier. Among these rarely heard works with texts in Swedish and Latin, we find cantatas in the form of virtuoso concertos, as well as arias and chorale settings and Buxtehude's only work in the stile antico, the Missa alla brevis.

Not known to many today, Svend Erik Tarp (1908-1994) was one of the most prominent Danish composers of his time, boasting a large and versatile body of work which more or less has survived in obscurity. This series now sheds new light on a selection of Tarp’s orchestral works, opening chronologically with some suites, overtures, and two small concertos. These are early and charming works that show a development from the elegant and easily accessible towards a more clarified neoclassicist style, which later became one of Tarp’s hallmarks. This is the first of three albums in the set which will focus on Tarp’s orchestral music. The succeeding volumes will contain Tarp’s Symphonies 1-3 and his Piano Concerto. The series is chronologically built, illustrating Tarp’s development as a composer, starting with his elegant music, inspired by French impressionism. The two soloists on this release are both concertmasters of Aarhus Symphony Orchestra.

• J.P.E. Hartmann was a central figure in the Danish music of the nineteenth century. He composed in all genres and his music spans three cultural epochs. It was in Danish National Romanticism that J.P.E. Hartman was to achieve his most striking compositional results and the choral work Vølvens Spådom (Prophecy of the Seeress) is one of Hartmann’s undisputed masterpieces.

• The work is based on a medieval poem about Nordic mythology and is typified by that special "Nordic sound” that Hartman made distinctive through the use of elements from folk music and has, until our own day, been part of the great legacy of Danish music. Vølvens Spådom marked the culmination of Hartmann’s ”Nordic style", and in the last thirty years of his long life it was to become his most frequent performed work. In 2006 Vølvens Spådom was chosen as one of the 12 works that represent the Danish Cultural Canon.

• On this new release you can experience an exciting recording with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra / DR and chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard performing J.P.E. Hartmann’s unforgettable masterpiece. A previous Dacapo release of Hartmann’s works performed by the same artists was well received: “Fans of Scandinavian music will find him interesting and appealing…[this] disc is delightfully repeatable.” Classics Today on 8.224207.

Common to all five cycles is the composer’s sincere and open approach to the textual expression; from the truly intimate and even erotic to the philosophical and the absurdly silly.

The conductor and composer Bo Holten has long been fascinated by Carlo Gesualdo – an Italian prince and one of the most extreme composers of the Late Renaissance, whose dramatic life and bitter fate make up the plot in Holten’s and librettist Eva Sommestad Holten’s ‘modern baroque opera’ Gesualdo – Shadows. Reflecting our own time, this is a drama of a great artist lost between outward duties and inner fragility: from a passionate youth to an old age of mysticism, violence and melancholy. Gesualdo’s own madrigals, fused into the score, contribute to a thrilling universe of pain and beauty.
