Image Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4
In his symphonic works Torbjörn Iwan Lundquist is using a special technique, in which large form is made from large musical blocks. The third symphony is written in one movement, but you can distinguish three blocks and a concluding part, 'the reminiscence '- in which the accumulated power reverts to the original nothingness in the end The third symphony was begun in 1971 in Jämtland and was completed in 1975 at Saltö in Bohuslän. As in most of Lundquist´s symphonies, this symphony begins with a primal cell, his association theme, a gust of wind, which unfolds into a grandiose sunrise. Nature means a lot for Lundquist. The idea for the Symphony No. 3 - which also had the title Sinfonia dolorosa and is dedicated to the composer’s deceased wife Maud — he got during a mountain hike, shortly after his wife’s death. The symphony was first performed in September 1976 in Malmö, by Malmö Symphony Orchestra conducted by Janos Fürst.

Image Gustaf Adolf och Ebba Brahe (2CD)
Recording from the performance of the first modern revival at Drottningholm Palace Theatre, Stockholm, June 7th, 1973. Dramatic opera in three acts composed in 1787 by Georg Joseph (Abbe) Vogler. The libretto was written by Johan Henric Kellgren after a play by King Gustaf III. The year 1613. The war between Sweden and Denmark is drawing to a crucial point. The young and rather new King Gustaf II Adolf is in the field while Ebba Brahe, whom he adored ever since he was a child, is a lady-in-waiting to the Dowager Queen Kristina. Ebba and Gustaf Adolf intend marrying as soon as he got home, but the Dowager Queen disapprove their plans, and instead wants the King to find a royal bride. To prevent the marriage, she tries to get Ebba to doubt his love and fidelity, and intrigues. Eventually she gets Ebba marrying Admiral Jacob De la Gardie instead, and when the King shortly after return from the decisive battle against Denmark, he stands before the fait accompli. In his despair, he is considering to seek death, but is persuaded by his people continuing to lead them as a fatherly, wise and diligent King. The King realizes that duty and people's love is greater and more important than his own personal happiness. Gustaf Adolf reconciled with Ebba and congratulate the bride and groom.

Image Songs for Voice and Piano
Albert Rubenson has been described variously as ‘a Swedish Grieg’ and as Sweden’s first national romanticist. With his few, but high quality works in the symphonic genre and his activity as a visionary music critic, he is one of the 19th century’s more interesting individuals in Swedish music life. This programme from soprano Caroline Gentele and Victoria Power showcases his songs for voice and piano. Caroline Gentele studied at Opera Studio 67 in Stockholm from 1993 to 1997. She made her stage debut during the summer of 1994 as Barbarina in Mozart’s ”Le Nozze di Figaro” at Confidencen, Ulriksdal Palace Theatre. Possibly her most critically acclaimed role is The Queen of the Night in Mozart’s ” Die Zauberflöte”. She has sung this role at the Ulriksdal Palace Theatre in 2000, Ystad’s Theatre, Drottningholms Slottsteater and at the Royal Opera. At Folkoperan she has sung the roles of Barbarina in Mozarts ”Le Nozze di Figaro”, Flora in Verdi's ”La Traviata” and Sivan in Sven David Sandströms opera ”Jeppe på Berget”. Caroline received very warm and favorable reviews for her role as Adèle the chambermaid in Strauss’ ”Die Fledermaus” both at the Kristina Theatre Sigtuna in and touring once again with the Riksteatern

Image Maria! Maria! 400 Years of Chant In The Brigittine
Welcome into the Birgittine sisters’ world of Gregorian chant! Also known as Frälsarorden, the Birgittine Order is the only one with Scandinavian origins. Saint Birgitta (ca 1303-1373) and her collaborator and confessor, Petrus Olavi of Skänninge, laid its foundations in Rome, in the 1350s. Birgitta had moved there in 1349, and remained in that city for the rest of her life. After the first Birgittine abbey opened in Vadstena in 1384, the order rapidly spread across Europe. The chants on this recording are from the Birgittine Abbey, Maria Refugie in Uden, The Netherlands and this is the first time that chants from the rich collection in Maria Refugie have been recorded. It is also the first recording of the Birgittine repertoire from sources dating after the Middle Ages. I have selected 37 chants that reflect the musical and textual richness of Cantus sororum. The material spans more than 400 years, yet forms a coherent repertoire that belongs to the Gregorian chant tradition in all important aspects, with a Birgittine twist.

Image Art of Singing: Tribute to David Björling, Vol. 2
"When my Father Jussi was chosen as the 20th century’s leading male opera singer by English music critics at the turn of the century, we felt great joy and pride in the family. From my very early age I experienced singing and music at home, but most of all, I remember visiting the Opera house when Father sang. A strong memory was La bohème. I tried to hide my tears trickling down the cheek in the last act. Usually it was very ex citing to sit in the orchestra seats and keep up with everything that happened on stage. Everyone wore make-up and strange costumes, but as soon as Father began to sing, I recognized him. It was easy. He sounded ‘different’ than the rest of the ensemble. My Father was in his early 30s and had then been singing for 25 years. Already at the age of four to five, my Father and his brothers began to learn the essentials of the art of singing under my grandfather David’s solid guidance." (Lars Björling)

Image Improvisations (3CD)
All music (except Bellman) on this double CD is either improvised or composed by me. Part in a freer form, others with a more solid structure. As a bonus, there is an arrangement of the first movement from Mozart's Symphony No. 40, which I did for choir and piano. My relationship to the art of improvisation has, over the years as a musician, followed me like a shadow. It has always been there, I used to say: I play from scores just for living, but as an improviser I work as an artist. I also have divided my musical life in two parts: as a soloist, (where I improvise a lot) and as an accompanist, when it is very practical to use scores, of course. But as mentioned, my real 'I' does not belong to the world of written music, unless I compose music myself. Then this will have another importance for me.' - Steffan Biorklund-Jullander

Image To Cecilia - Swedish Love Songs
Sankta Cecilia has since the middle ages been regarded as the patron saint of music, and above all the church music. She is portrayed with musical instruments on a variety of paintings and the organ has been her special attribute. Cecilia's name day on November 22, has over the centuries been celebrated with music festivals and many composers have written pieces in her honor. For this CD in honor of the patron saint of music, I have chosen love songs mainly by Swedish composers. Torsten Mossberg Torsten Mossberg, tenor Torsten is a physician, specialist in Anesthesiology and intensive care. He has studied singing with among others Ester Ruhrseitz, Eva Pilat and Björn Thulin. He has extensive experience as a choir singer, a tenor in the Oscar Chamber Choir in Stockholm and often engaged as a soloist. Torsten has a broad repertoire, from ballads to romances and cabaret songs, and has released several CDs of rarely recorded songs by Swedish composers.

Image Tragédie
Émile Jaques-Dalcroze composed in almost all genres except religious music. His style and aesthetic approach were characterized above all by his exceptional melodic gift and the originality of his feeling for rhythm. Though close to the French school, he also felt the influence of German post-romanticism. In this respect he was representative of the young French-speaking Swiss composers of the late nineteenth century, alternating between the Latin and Germanic extremes in their country and often receiving a double education in Berlin or Leipzig, and Vienna or Paris. Jaques-Dalcroze’s orchestral music languished in total oblivion until the beginning of the 21st century, but has since then been the subject of a significant rehabilitation attempt by means of the recordings made possible through the talent and musicological work of the conductor Adriano.

Image Erste Symphonie; Lieder
Martin Scherber was born in 1907 in Nuremberg. He was a confirmed loner and little is known about his career. At the age of just five he played the violin and started to imitate things he had heard on the piano. He showed great reluctance to learn to read music, but soon acquired remarkable skill at piano improvisation. At the age of thirteen he started to compose. He appeared in public for the first time as a pianist in Nuremberg in 1922, and first presented compositions of his own the following year. During the Second World War he served as a soldier, and following the war he devoted himself to teaching and composition. Martin Scherber’s oeuvre is modest in size. He worked for years on each of his symphonies. In addition, between 1930 and 1937 he composed several song cycles (including 27 children’s songs) and individual songs to texts by Goethe, Morgenstern, Novalis and himself. Observations by Scherber himself about his music are very rare, and no comments about the First Symphony have survived from the period during which it was being written. The only remarks that we have come from the time of the work’s revision after the first performance in March 1952. On 1 August 1953, for example, Scherber tells us: ‘The world of the First Symphony is close to my heart. In fact I am more at one with these worlds than with everything in this world. It was my wish that we should both hear it the way it was intended'.
