Helt underbart!"

Camerata Roman is part of the county music ensemble of Kalmar, Sweden. Since its establishment in the seventies, under the name Oskarshamns ensemble, it has developed into one of the leading string orchestras of Sweden. As "Camerata" in the name of the orchestra indicates, they often play "camerata" i.e. with no conductor. This places high demands on the musicians to be sensitive ensemble players. "Roman" is a reference to the "father of Swedish music", Johan Helmich Roman (1694-1758), who lived the last 13 years of his life on the Haraldsmåla estate north of Kalmar ...

"These sonatas belong to the lesser known and less often performed violin sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. All of these, with the exception of the F major 1022 were composed for solo violin with continued bass, giving the accompanist a great amount of freedom to embellish and improvise their part. The bass parts are written out, as well as the chord structure. Certain performance rules and stylistic approach are followed so that the music is realized as intended. It is not taken for granted, although it was certainly most common, that these works were to be performed on harpsichord or harpsichord and viola da gamba. Because we wished to come as near the listener as possible we chose to record the works complete, live in the studio. There are occasional clips here and there but we wanted to convey the overall feeling that we are sitting with you, here and now, playing. Since both Nisse and I improvise freely when we play, placing or removing ornaments as the moment dictates and in accordance with each other, this way of recording felt even more relevant. For us, for what we wanted to say and for the flow of the music. We hope you enjoy this different approach."

Elfrida Andrée (1841-1929) is without question one of the most important figures in Swedish music during the second half of the 19th century and at the turn of the century, not only as long-time organist of Göteborg (Gothenburg) Cathedral and a composer of vocal, symphonic, chamber and organ music, but also as a well-known, indefatigable champion of women's professional standing. She was a true pioneer of the still-ongoing campaign for gender equality in music.

Image Symfoni nr 7 Leningrad
I Leningrad spelades symfonin först i Augusti. Radioutsändningen kunde hörasi högtalare utplacerade i staden.

Image The Strenuous Life

Då spelade man bl a Wilhelm Stenhammars g-moll symfoni och uruppförde Estländaren Tõnu Kõrvits "Passacaglia".

Leif Henrikson (viola da gamba) & Lars-Erik Larsson (teorb)

In 2014 Sebastian Caldas Zeballos was awarded a scholarship to collaborate with percussionists from candombe tradition in Montevideo. This all resulted in a series of of Concerts in cooperation with the percussionist Ismail Bertola with candombes, tangos and popular pieces.

Laura Netzel and Valborg Aulin are among the group of swedish female composers who began to be talked about on the public music scene towards the end of the 19th century. Both Laura Netzel and Valborg Aulin were accomplished pianists, who showed extraordinary musical talent from an early age. But they followed substantially different paths to their début as composer. Laura Netzel was 35 when a couple of her pieces for ladies’ chorus appeared in a programme for the New Harmonic Society at a concert in Stockholm in 1874. Valborg Aulin, on the other hand, was only 19 when several songs of hers were performed at one of the student concerts at the academy of music in 1879.
With her experienced technique and artistic and accurate interpretation, Lucia Negro has long been considered one of Sweden’s foremost pianists

Ashildur Haraldsdottir - Flute
Love Derwinger - Piano

Ashildur Haraldsdottir was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1965. She started to playing the flute at the age of nine and graduated from the Reykjavik Conservatorie when she was seventeen. She continuied her musical training in the USA, first at the New England Conservatorie and finally at internationally renowned Juilliard School of Music from where she graduated in 1988. Her teacher was Samuel Baron. She then continued her studies with Thomas Nyfenegger and Alain Marion. A Promoter of new Music, Ashildur has premiered many new works written specially for her, itroducing new Iceland music in Sweden and in the USA. Ashildur is the first prize winner of various competitions, has toured extensively as a soloist in America, Mexico, England, Iceland and Sweden, and has frequently appeared on radio and television.

Love Derwinger was born in Nörrköping, Sweden, in August 1966. His musical abilities were discovered early. At 9 years of age, the extraordinary facility with which he played the piano, set the context of his future career. At 17, Derwinger played Listz's second piano concerto with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. In 1987, performed his final student concert: Brahm's first piano concerto with the Swedish Radio Symphonics. Since then, Derwinger has given concerts as a soloist as well as performed chamber music together with musicians such as Nicolai Gedda, Christian Lindberg, Manuela Wisler and Roland Pöntinen.

During the 1920's ROUSSEL developed a unique, personal type of neo-classicism - like a dry, white wine compared, for example, with the bouquet and irony of Stravinsky. In each of the four movements of "Joueurs de flûte", Roussel depicts an illustrious mythological flautist.

FAURE was a subtle precursor of impressionism, with musical echoes reaching back to antiquity. No one would call this little competition piece more than a bagatelle, a country-like idyllic scene followed by a mercurial fast movement.

SANCAN guested Scandinavia in the post-war years. His list of compositions is not extensive. Most of his compositions are pieces for the piano.

DUTILLEUX found his own style in technical virtuosity, melodic sensuality and terse concentration. His ideal was "music which lives a life of its own, with its own development". The "Sonatine" may not be thrilling, but like every piece Dutilleux wrote, it pushes forward its performers' potential in terms of technical skill and musicality.

GAUBERT wrote one of the leading flute schools, "Méthode complète de flûte". He also composed prolifically, including music for the stage. "Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando" consists of delicate melodic idyll followed by a whirling, spinning scherzo-like movement.

The spirit of the sonata from POULENC takes shape in the first movement, as a sort of meditation on Robert Desnos's "final poem", which Poulenc had set to music earlier that year. The dense, lyrical Cantilina is followed by a movement which continues to reflect the emotional atmosphere of that first movement, in the form of brief reminiscences, like shadows cast over hard-won "joie de vivre".

During the Vienna classical period, innumerable quartets, but very few quintets were written. Haydn did not produce a single quintet, nor does Beethoven appear to have been particularly amused by composing a cinque. Although he did write a couple of string quintets, they belong amongst his "juvenilia", and are seldom performed today. He also composed one piece for piano and four wind instruments, largely plagiarised from Mozart.

Wolfgang Mozart, however, appears to have taken a different stand on five-part music and its tonal potential. Gourmets of chamber music set even greater store by his string quintets than by his string quartets. His clarinet quintet in A major K 581 is generally considered one of his loveliest pieces. In April 1784 Mozart wrote to his father in Salzburg of the quintet K 452 in E flat major for piano and wind instruments that it was his best composition. To date.

After studying musicology at Stockholm University, he was accepted as a flute student in the performance program at the School of Music of the University of Göteborg. He completed his studies with a Masters degree, followed by a soloist's diploma in 1992. He has won a number of prizes in international musich competitions, which have provided him with the opportunity to concertize internationally. On these occasions, he almost always has Swedish music on his programs.

Two Romantic composers hold a special place in the hearts of the Swedish people: HUGO ALFVEN and Wilhelm Peterson-Berger. Alfven is most appreciated for his pictorial orchestral work Midsummer Vigil, as well as Spring in Roslag, a polka, and Sweden's Flag, which has become almost a second Swedish national anthem.

WILHELM PETERSON-BERGER was virtually Alfven`s contemporary, his music has practically never made an impact outside Sweden. His romances and choir songs are, however, often performed in Sweden, and Frösö flowers is frequently performed, not least by amateurs.

KURT ATTERBERG may be the Swedish composer whose work has been most performed abroad. Conductors including Richard Strauss, Bruno Walter, Megelberg, Toscanini, Furtwängler, Beecham and Stokowski have conducted his orchestral pieces. At home, he made important contributions to Swedish music and musicians in central respects over the course of several decades.

At the age of twenty and with a letter of recommendation from Carl Nielsen addressed to Artur Honegger in his hand, GUNNAR DE FRUMERIE arrived in Paris. He studied the piano there under Alfred Cortot, and came into close contact with the stylistic manner known as neo-baroque, characterized by a return to the forms that were particularly popular during the baroque era, the rhythmic patterns of the suite and dances like the gavotte, the saraband, the siciliano.

Camerata Roman - Chamber orchestra
(Known internationally as : Camerata Sweden)

The Baltic Sea is an intracontinental sea. The countries surrounding it form a rich, multifacetted, and yet closed related cultural area. The music on this CD features some of the most wellknown "Baltic" composers from the 20th century.

"Roman" is a reference to the "father of Swedish music", Johan Helmich Roman (1694-1758), who lived the last 13 years of his life on the Haraldsmåla estate north of Kalmar.

Jan Stigmer - Violin

This is the second disc in the series in which Camerata Roman performs music from the countries bordering on the Baltic Sea. We begin in Estonia, with Rudolf Tobias and Eduard Tubin. Tubin later took up residence in Sweden, the country of origin of both Hilding Rosenberg and Kurt Atterberg. From there, it may seem a long leap to Poland, and the music of Krzysztof Penderecki, but in this particular piece he alludes to the neo.baroque style that also characterises the work of the Swedish composers. The neo-baroque style of Max Reger bears far more of the distinguishing marks of the romantic period, despite the fact that he is literally looking back at the greatest master of the Baroque, his countryman Johann Sebastian Bach.

Few composers in Sweden have gained such deep-rooted popularity as Lars-Erik Larsson. With warmth and melodius compositions like the Pastoral Suite and God in Disguise he reached into the hearts of the Swedish people. He was laso a learned and serious man, who in his role as Professor of composition fostered and educated several generations of young Swedish composers. In 1945 he was appointed as an inspector of those amateur orchestras which were entitled to state contribution. He immediately noticed their need for modern repertoire with string parts that were technically feasible for the musicians. This resulted in Larsson composing a valuable and unique series of concertinos between 1955 and 1957. They all contained comparatively simple stringparts and an advanced solo part.

Märta Schéle - Soprano
Olof Höjer - Piano

It all began with Gabriel Fauré and la Bonne Chanson - an affection which later extended itself to a deep love of all French art. Then one day, I came across songs by the Swedish composer Helena Munktell, active for many years in Paris. As I was also drawn towards France, I felt a sense of sisterhood with her work, across linguistic, temporal and national boundaries. M. Schéle

Märta Schéle is open to a wide variety of musical contexts, appearing in theatrically staged concerts, composer presentations, large and small chamber recitals, symphonic works, improvisations and churches. Her repertoire is extensive ranging from the Baroque to the avant-garde. She also sings with jazz ensembles. Märta Schéle has toured at home and abroad, has performed on radio and televison and has made many recordings. Her disc "Life and Death" on the Proprius Label was awarded "best vocal recording of the year" by the Swedish daily Gothenburg Post. In 1983, she was appointed member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. 1990, she recieived Litteris et Artibus and the Gothenburg City gold medal, and in 1994 the Pro Arte et Scientia by Gothenburg University. She has a teaching position at the School of Music, Gothenburg University and also gives classes elsewhere.

Olof Höjer "...has long been considered to be a particularly discerning interpreter, especially of unusual works for the piano. His interpretations are of rarely heard pieces and composers, and are often performed in unusual concert settings."
He "...is without doubt one of Swedens foremost accompanists. His fingers are quick and his wrist limber; he is never domineering, but at the same time his playing is always meaningful because of the clarity and elegance of his musical intentions; moreover, he is unique in his sensuous feel for sound."

LilleBror Söderlundh 1912-1957
By his brother, P O Söderlund

Many people regarded LilleBror Söderlundh as simply a nebulous, romantic folk singer, but his personality was actually a multifaceted one. As early as in his adolscence, he proved to be a strong-willed and stubborn when he insisted on becoming a musician, against his father's will. LilleBror was a charming, social man, who made friends with all kind of people. He was enchantingly charismatic as he sang, irrespective of whether he was performing for friends or from the stage. In many ways he had a bohemian personality, but he was nonetheless pedantic in his work.

The Sundsvall Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1990 as a part of the county music organization "Musik i Västernorrland", which serves the central area of Sweden with Sundsvall as its largest town. The orchestra is classical in size, consisting of strings, double woodwind, brass and timpani, making a total of 35 musicians. The orchestral work is successfully combined with chamber music plaing - the Nordia Ensemble and the Sundsvall Wind Quintet are very popular ensembles working all over Sweden. The Sundsvall musicians have attracted considerable attention through their special interest in new music. This has resulted in fifteen first performances in less than three years - something that is unique in Sweden.

Niklas Willén was born in Stockholm in 1961. From 1984 until 1990 he studied conducting and composition at the Roayl College of Music in Stockholm. Since his début in 1988 he has made regular appearances with virtually all of the major Swedish orchestras. In 1990 he conducted at the Royal Opera in Stockholm for the first time and he has been invited back on several occasions to conduct both opera and ballet.

The fact that Lena Willemark comes from Älvdalen in Dalarna is something that has been an important factor in her artistic career. As a singer she performs jazz, classical and folk music with an individuality that is given to few artists. She has studied at the College of Music in Stockholm, and as a member of Gals and Pals and the ensemble of Elise Einarsdottir, her voice has pleased many audiences. Lena Willemark has also collaborated with Karin Rehnquist on a number of previous occasions.

The Umeå Symphony Orchestra is a young symphony, having only played under its current name since the 1991-2 season. It's history, however, extends much farther back in time.
For many years, the orchestra was an independent orchestra which also played for the Norrland Opera Company under the name of Umeå Sinfonietta. Actually, however, the orchestra was founded as a military band, established in 1841. In 1974, when the Norrland Opera Company came into being, that band had become a regional woodwind and percussion ensemble, supplemented by a string section borrowed from Stockholm when necessary. In 1976 the orchestra began hiring its own string players, and in 1978 the Sinfonietta made its debut performance.

The Cambridge Baroque Camerata
Jonathan Hellyer Jones, harpsichord and direction

The Six Concertos Johann Sebastian Bach bestowed the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721 are a comon delight to most music music lovers. The 'Seventh'' featured in this set is a realisation of the G minor sonata for viola da gamba and obligato harpsichord (BWV 1029). As comon parctice in Bachs' time often had it, most music had no rigorous instrumentation - if it was to your liking You played it with the instruments that was at hand. The arrengment heard on on this recording is by Duncan Druce and takes the 6th Brandenburg Concerto as a model for its instrumentation.

THE CAMBRIDGE BAROQUE CAMERATA was founded in 1984 by its director, the British harpsichordist Jonathan Hellyer Jones, to perform the music of the 17th and 18th centuries on period instruments. Since its foundation the group has toured throughout England and Scotland as well as giving regular concerts in Cambridge and London in programmes using from two to thirty players. More recently the Camerata has toured in France where it has begun to establish itself as an ensemble with style and sensivity. Both in the U.K. and France the camerata collaborated with choirs in oratorio performances, providing a firm but transparent support.

JONATHAN HELLYER JONES has spent much of his life in cambridge where he read music at St. John's Collage. Ha was awarded a John Stewart of rannoch Scholarship and in 1972 recived the first Brian Runnett Memorial Price for organ playing. He now lives in Cambridge where he teaches at both universities, specialising in baroque performance practice, and is a senior member of Hughes Hall, a graduate collage.

After finishing his studies Mårten worked with Gävleborg Symphony Orchestra and after that with the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He has held the postion as principal Oboe in the Gothenburg Symphony since 1989.

Mårten Larsson, is a frequent soloist both with orchestras in Sweden and Europe. He is aso a member of Stockholm Sinfonietta.

Thord Svedlund, CONDUCTOR

Thord Svedlund has, for the past 10 years, worked as a violinst with the Gothenburg Symphony. He was educated n Gothenburg with further studies in USA and Holland. He has studied conducting for Lars Bemstorp and at a summercourse for Jorma Panula He made his conducting debut with musicians from Gothenburg Symphony in a serenade for 13 Wind nstruments by W. A. Mozart. Both musicians and critics were in complete agreement as to the success of the performance and the promise of the conductor

A young symphony orchestra with nineteenth century roots:

The Umeå Symphony Orchestra is a young symphony, having only played under its current name since the 1991-2 season. It's history however, extends much farther back in time. For many years, the orchestra was an independant orchestra which also played for the Norrland Opera Company under the name of Umeå Sinfonietta. Actually, the orchestra was founded as a military band, established in Umeå in 1841.

In 1974, when the Norrand Opera Company came into being, that band had become regional woodwind and percussion ensemble, suppemented by a strng section borrowed from Stockholm when necessary. In 1976 the orchestra began hiring its own string players, and in 1978 the sinfonietta made its debut perfommance.

In rescent years the number of musicians has gradually increased and today the orchestra has over fifty full time musicians, and hopes to expand to sixty. Thus the Umeå Symphony Orchestra is both an independant part of the Västerbotten Music foundation, with its own arrangements, concerts and tours, and also as the orchestra of the Norrland Opera Company. They serve many purposes in the community, and their geographical coverage is also very diverse: they play symphony concerts and play for opera performances as well as having programs for children, old age pensioner and families, all over central and northern Sweden. Another unique aspect of their works is that the musicians also perfom in chamber music ensembles as part of their jobs.

"Roman" is a reference to the "father of Swedish music", Johan Helmich Roman (1694-1758), who lived the last 13 years of his life on the Haraldsmåla estate north of Kalmar.

Edvard Grieg
Shortly after coming home from Italy in 1884, Grieg composed this work in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Holberg's death - an inspired and intense piece conceived in his "composer's den" in Lofthus as he kept a watchful eye on the progress of construction work on Troldhaugen.

His two elegiac melodies, Heart Wounds and Spring, were originally written for voice and piano (lyrics: A.O. Vinje) in 1888, and arranged for strings immediately afterwards. In May the same year, Grieg conducted the string versions in London with the Royal Philharmonic Society. It was an enormous success and the leading orchestras immediately added the pieces to their repertoire.

He is active as a concert musician both in solo organ recitals and as the artistic director of "Göteborg Baroque Soloists".

From the booklet,
an introduction by Kerala Snyder:
Dieterich Buxtehude's concert series, called Abendmusiken, achieved fame far beyond the walls of Lübeck, such that Johann Sebastian Bach timed his famous trip in the fall of 1705 to coincide with this yearly event, which took place from four to five o'clock on the last two Sundays of Trinity and the second, third, and fourth Sundays of Advent. Buxtehude's presentations normally consisted of five-part oratorios, and with one possible exception they are all lost. In the year 1700, however, he departed from his normal practice and instead presented five programs of unrelated works for voices with instruments. Whatever the reason may have been that he did not compose an oratorio that year, we can speculate that for these concerts he used music that already lay at hand. We know in fact that this was the case for the fourth Sunday of Advent: ³Upon the wish of high patrons, the Jubilaeum or Hundred-year Poem which was presented at the beginning of this year 1700 will be repeated.² The other four concerts each consisted of three works, at least one of them a chorale setting. Every one of these compositions is lost.

an introduction by Frederik K. Gable:
On Thursday morning, April 16, 1607, many professional musicians of Hamburg participated in a festival service dedicating for the third time the newly re-furnished St. Gertrude¹s Chapel. The music was so splendid that Lucas van Cöllen, the Chief Pastor of the nearby St. James¹s Church (Jacobikirche), described its performance in the published version of his sermon (reproduced following this commentary). This detailed account, supplemented by information from musical, pictorial, liturgical, and theological sources, makes possible a reconstruction of the full liturgical context. The service includes impressive double-choir works by Bonhomme and Lassus, a triple-choir motet by Jacob Handl, and the magnificent German Te Deum setting for four choirs of instruments and voices by Hieronymus Praetorius.

VÄSTERåS SINFONIETTA - GLENN MOSSOP, conductor

The composers:

Daniel Nelson was born on 1 May 1965 in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. His family moved to Sweden in 1970. His first studies in composition were with Lars-Erik Rosell prior to returning to the United States in 1985. There, he studied composition with Jean Eichelberger-Ivey at the Peabody Conservatory. Having received his Bachelor of Music degree, he went on to study for a Master of Arts with Ralph Shapey at University of Chicago. Since 1992, he has been working in Sweden as a composer. Nelson's music is pulse-oriented. It has also been described as minimalistic in character (more post-minimalistic, actually, not to be confused with early minimalism), and as containing a slightly neo-Romantic vein as well. (translation by Linda Schenck)

Svante Henryson, a musician whose solo album debut "enkidu" evokes worlds as disparate as those of Charlie Haden, the Indian classical masters Massive Attack, Arvo Pärt and Jimmy Page. Born in Stockholm and raised in Northern Sweden, Henryson claims amongst his earliest influences Elton John, Bo Hansson's "The Lord of the Rings", and the young female double bass player of a local folk group. The latter's influence on the young Henryson was clearly profound as his early studies led to a year's study at the Academy of Music in Prague and a role as Principal Bass player with the Oslo Philharmonic. That he should trace a parallel musical path as an electric bass player from political rock to jazz fusion and ultimately to three years in America as sideman to the Paganini of heavy metal guitar, Yngwie Malmsteen, is a testament to both Henryson's individual talent and his instinctive eclectisism. Fredrik Högberg (b. 1971) grew up in Svedala, near Malmö, Sweden. He studied composition with Per Grundberg at Framnäs Folk High School from 1987 to 1991, and with Professor Jan Sandström at the Piteå College of Music from 1990 to 1997. One of Högberg's most outstanding works is "Subadobe" (1993), for solo trombone. It is frequently performed, not least by trombonist Christian Lindberg. Högberg is also interested in the pedagogical potential of composition, and has developed methods and material, in collaboration with Jan Sandström, for the first community music school composition classes for children, known as the "Luleå model". Hans Davidsson
Hans Davidsson is Associate Professor of Organ and Performance Practice at Göteborg University. In 1991 he received Sweden's first Ph.D. to include music performance with a thesis entitled "Matthias Weckman: the Interpretation of his Organ Music" (dissertation, music edition, and recording). He is the founder of the Göteborg Organ Art Center (GOArt) and was its director from 1995-2000. In 2001 he was appointed Associate Professor of Organ at Eastman School of Music in Rochester (USA), and continues to serve as the General Artistic and Research Director of GOArt.

From the booklet,
an introduction by Hans Davidsson:
The Morlanda organ is a one-manual instrument based on a Principal 4-foot with a variety of flutes and principal stops, but no reeds. It has a four-octave compass with a short octave in the bass (CDEFGA-c3), and its original tuning has been restored: quarter comma meantone, the typical organ temperament of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries with pure major thirds in all playable keys... Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was the foremost organ and keyboard performer and teacher in northern Europe at the beginning of the seventeenth century, synthesizing English, Spanish and Italian keyboard traits. In the great musical architecture of the Fantasia-style, the composer was, according to Athanasius Kircher, supposed to "display ingenious in hidden design of harmonyŠand fugues." Common material for a fantasia was an abstract theme, for example a hexachord (the six-note scale cdefga). In Sweelinck's Hexachord Fantasia this theme appears throughout the whole piece surrounded by all kinds of imitations in different voices, with faster note values and an increasingly complex structure. Froberger's Ricercar is based on the same concept, although more severe and archaic in its slow and motet-like appearance and, typical for this genre, explores a partly chromatic subject. Johann Jakob Froberger and his friend Matthias Weckman, two of the most famous organists of the middle seventeenth century, both helped to bring the new, Italian, expressive and rhetorical style to the North. Froberger studied in Italy with Girolamo Frescobaldi and Weckman served as court organist for several years among the finest Italian instrumentalists at the court in Dresden. In 1655, he became organist in Hamburg, St. Jacobi. The toccata, canzon and capriccio are examples of the new, multi-sectional forms, in which contrasts between improvisatory sections based on harmony are followed by strict imitation in various meters. Weckman most likely played one of Brebos's organs around Copenhagen during the mid-1640s, when he served as court-organist and Capellmeister to Christian V in Denmark. The passacaglia, originated in chord-strumming patterns for the five-course Spanish guitar, and the variations played above this ground-bass pattern became a favorite baroque variation form. Johann Kaspar Kerll's Passacaglia is one of the finest examples of the South German version of this style. Kerll, like Froberger, had studied for Frescobaldi in Rome; he served as court organist in MÜnchen and later moved to Vienna.
The chorale variations on "Allein Gott in der Höh sei Her" by Sweelinck treat the well-known orthodox Lutheran hymn of praise and glory strictly with early seventeenth-century figuration and the cantus firmus appears in the treble (v. 1, 2 and 4) and the tenor (v. 3) respectively. The variations on the Italian tune "More Palatino" display a quite different character: vivid, more elegant and dance-like figuration. The chorale partita by Georg Böhm on "Ach wie nichtig, ach wie flÜchtig," represents the late seventeenth-century style with more expressive and varied figuration. Böhm was the master of this art and in this partita he treats a hymn whose text was strongly influenced by pietism, addressing one of the favorite subjects of late seventeenth-century philosophy and theology in Sweden: the shortness of life and its vanity. This was the time when French opera came into style, when the form of the aria in secular as well as in sacred repertory became the norm, and when text painting was common practice in chorale variations.
All these elements can be traced in the Böhm variations. Böhm's music exemplifies a trend around the year 1700 toward the synthesis of all of the various styles from the seventeenth century: Italian, Spanish, English and the new French influences. The growing importance of national rather than feudal political boundaries and the dawn of the new "Enlightenment" gallant style, from France fostered this synthesizing trend. The Morlanda organ, with its integration of elements of Brebos into the concept of Wittig, embodies at the same time this almost cosmopolitan North European baroque style and a Danish-Swedish regional idiom of organ building with roots in central Europe. It is a sounding artifact and witness to the truly European traits of our common historical organ heritage. After almost 400 years, it now sounds again and serves the congregation in Morlanda according to the inscription painted on the organ case in Marstrand, "Gloria in exelcis Deo."

From the Booklet:
...In 1705, Johann Sebastian Bach walked to Lübeck in order to learn from Buxtehude and to hear the magnificent organs of the city. Buxtehude must have given him a comprehensive introduction to the craft and art of organ playing of his time and must have demonstrated the brand new Schnitger organ in the Lübeck Dom. The program of this CD represents music of a kind that perhaps Bach experienced in Lübeck Dom. Let us imagine that Buxtehude together with Bach, close to Christmas of 1705, walked up the stairs to the west balcony in the Dom, played the full organ, and all kinds of variations using a favorite Christmas melody, played a prelude in the style of one of Buxtehude's foremost students, and ended their session with a grand Toccata...

Moments Musicaux by Rakhmaninov and Schubert

From the booklet: Comments by the pianist

Dear Listener,

You may wonder why Rakhmaninov's "Moments" come before Schubert's in this recording. I recorded them originally in fact in chronological order, with Schubert's coming before Rakhmaninov's, but then a Swedish friend said: 'You know, if one listens to them in the opposite order they sound even more impressive. Then rather than ending triumphantly - fortissimo and with an exclamation mark (Rakhmaninov's sixth Moment) - the CD would end pianissimo, as if you were saying " . . . . "!' This made sense to me.

Victor Ryabchikov, Russian and now a resident of Moscow, was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He studied in the Tashkent Conservatory under Angelina Danilova and subsequently at the Moscow Conservatory under Tatiana Nikolayeva. Music for Piano Solo

From the booklet:

This is an anthology with selected piano music by the Swedish composer Hilding Hallnäs, celebrating the centenary of his birth. It is also a tribute to the career of Jörgen Amsö as a pianist for more than sixty years.

Hilding Hallnäs (1903 - 1984)
Hilding Hallnäs was born in Halmstad, on the west coast of Sweden, where he took his upper secondary school certificate in 1923. The following year he started studying at the College of Music in Stockholm, with Gustav Hägg and Otto Olsson as teachers. At the College of Music he graduated as an organist and Master of Music. Hallnäs then went abroad to study the organ for A. Cellier in Paris and composition for H. Grabner in Leipzig. In 1933 he took office as organist in the Parish of Johanneberg in Göteborg, a post he held until his retirement in 1968. Hallnäs also taught theory of music at the Göteborg Orchestra School until 1951. From 1957 to 1972 he was Programme Director and Vice-Chairman of "Levande musik" (Living Music), a musical society in Göteborg, and at the same time Chairman of the Göteborg Composers' Society. Hallnäs was a member of the Musical Academy from 1952. A few years after retirement, Hilding Hallnäs and his wife, Gun, the well known actress, settled in Stockholm.

Hallnäs started composing early, at first in a general Nordic tradition. His time at the College of Music served primarily as a platform for new musical investigation, via French impressionism (such as Divertimento, opus 9) to German expressionism (Vier Goethe-Lieder, 1934), where much of his work shows kinship with his contemporaries, Dag WirÈn and Lars-Erik Larsson. The war years were musically unproductive and it was not until the end of the forties that a newly-fledged composer was heard again. Hallnäs' musical base had by then become more radical and in the fifties he incorporated dodecophany (e.g. Metamorfosi Sinfoniche, 1953/55) and point fracture. In his musical work - Rapsodia, 1963 (dedicated to Nelson Mandela) his early commitment to global issues started, a commitment that reached a peak with the orchestral work "En grekisk saga", 1967 (A Greek Tale) - a tribute to the resistance movement of the Greek revolution. Hallnäs was also instrumental in the modernisation of the guitar as a classical instrument in Sweden. From the fifties and onwards he wrote over twenty solo and chamber works for the guitar. For his own instrument, the organ, he wrote several important works, such as Musica Dolorosa. Hallnäs' opus list contains several symphonies and orchestral concerto works, a large number of chamber music compositions and vocal music in various settings.

Gérard Schaub, flute

This is an anthology with selected perfomances from Gèrard Schaub's career

From the booklet :

Gèrard Schaub was born in Winterthur in Switzerland. As a boy, he played flute and various other instruments, including the xylophone, in the wind band of his home town. Eventually his interest in the flute came to dominate, and at the age of seventeen he became a student of the renowned flutist Aurële Nicolet in Winterthur. A couple of years later he moved on to study with Andrè Jaunet in Zûrich. At the same time he was studying to be a lithographer, a profession he pursued briefly. His employer was a great music lover, and allowed young Gèrard time off to go to his flute lessons. In 1951 he was accepted to study at the Music Conservatory in Paris under Gaston Crunelle. When he won his degree in 1953, it was with a first prize from the Conservatory.

Gèrard Schaub was subsequently principal flutist in several European orchestras including the Dresden Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhausorkestern, and the Salzburg Mozarteum. In 1957 he moved to Göteborg, Sweden to be principal flutist with the Göteborg Symphony orchestra, a position he held until he retired in 1996. In addition to the everyday rountine of rehearsals and concerts with the Göteborg Symphony at the Göteborg concert hall, Gèrard Schaub accompanied the orchestra on tours all over the world, and contributed to a large number of recordings. As a soloist, Gèrard Schaub has performed at concerts and on the radio in Sweden and elsewhere, including Berlin, Leipzig, Prague, Frankfurt, Madrid, Salzburg and, of course, in Switzerland.

Gèrard Schaub has taught at the School of Music, Göteborg University since 1959, and in 1983 the government bestowed upon him the title of Professor. Many of his students have gone on to become successful flutists themselves in Swedish orchestras and elsewhere. Gérard Schaub has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 1995.

Gèrard Schaub has always been a great lover of chamber music (the local phone book, incidentally, lists "chamber musician" as his profession), which has been a great advantage to his students at the College. His lessons in chamber music have always been marked by their outstanding musical quality and his enthusiasm, in equal measure. "Oh, this music is wonderful!" is an expression his students and colleagues will always associate with him. He was active in a number of chamber ensembles, most notably Ars Intima, and he has also performed a large number of works for solo flute, often by contemporary composers. Gèrard Schaub has always been interested in the lastest music. He has cooperated with many Swedish and Nordic composers, some of whom have written pieces especially for him, many of which he has also premiered. This CD contains pieces for solo flute written by composers from the Swedish west coast, plus a number of radio recordings. Gèrard Schaub performs here with other well-known western Swedish musicians.

It is our hope that this CD reflects both a number of sides of the talent of Gèrard Schaub and a number of aspects of the western Swedish cultural heritage.

Image Six Sonatas for Solo Violin OP 27
Arisa Fujita, violin

From the booklet :

The six Sonatas for solo violin Op.27 were composed in 1923 and published the following year. Inspired by a moving performance of a Bach unaccompanied Sonata by Joseph Szigeti, all six of Ysae s Sonatas were sketched in twenty-four hours and within a few days were ready for publication. Each of the Sonatas was dedicated to a different violinist all of whom were his close friends or colleagues, including Szigeti to whom Ysae dedicated the first sonata. He also paid tribute to Bach in the way his work resembles the form of the Six Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin and by characterizing some of his own movements with titles from the Partitas.

Ysae was a passionate man giving fully of himself both in his playing and teaching. On the other hand he was also deeply sensitive and inward-looking, even melancholy at times, and these aspects of his personality were plainly expressed in his compositions.

At first glance one is struck by the technical demands and violinistic innovations of the Sonatas but close familiarization reveals a deeply-felt creativity, with the personalities of each of his dedicatees and his own life experiences spontaneously woven into a work of great imagination all this through the medium of a single violin.

Cecilia Zilliacus

From the booklet presentation:

Cecilia Zilliacus studied at the Stockholm Royal College of Music, where she was awarded a soloist diploma. 1997 was an important career year for her, when she won both the Trondheim Soloist Award and the Stockholm Royal Academy of Music Biennial Soloist Competition, and was the Swedish Radio Artist in residence. Since then she has become firmly established as one of the front runners among the exciting, new soloists. During the 2001/02 season, she participated in the international collaboration known as Rising Stars, which gave her the opportunity to play in major music metropolises all over the world, including Amsterdam with the Concertgebouw and New York, at Carnegie Hall. She performs regularly with all the major symphony orchestras in Sweden, and more and more frequently as a guest artist elsewhere. When she performed with the BBC National Orchestra in Wales in 2001, she was reviewed as a ìmajor discoveryî. Cecilia Zilliacus is also an active chamber musician.

She has formed an internationally recognized string trio with Johanna Persson, viola, and Kati Raitinen, cello. Since 2001 she has also been teaching at the Stockholm Royal College of Music. She has recorded a number of CDs, not least one with Swedish violin sonatas, which won a Grammy in 2000, and one with the Bartok sonata no. 2 for violin and piano. The pianist on both these recordings is Bengt-åke Lundin.

This is Cecilia Zilliacusí first CD with orchestra.

Västerås Sinfonietta

The Västerås Sinfonietta is one of the oldest orchestras in Sweden, with its origins in a music society established in 1883. Throughout its 125 year history, the ensemble has remained a cornerstone of the Västerås music scene, with a devoted, enthusiastic home audience. The Västerås Sinfonietta has cooperated with many well-known Swedish and foreign conductors and soloists. Since 2001, Hannu Koivula has been both their principal conductor and artistic director.

The Västerås Sinfonietta, as its name implies, is a small symphony orchestra. The individual competences of its thirty members is the foundation of the orchestraís artistic profile. One of the key aspects of the orchestraís artistic objective is the use of a chamber music approach based on listening and communication. They give high priority to contemporary music in their choice of repertoire, and every season they debut at least one commissioned composition. Autumn 2002, for example, saw the first performance of Daniel Nelsonís The Ninth Wave, and spring 2003 saw the debut performance of Catharina Backmanís Madrigal, with a text by Tomas Tranströmer. This piece was also recorded for Swedish television. The Sinfonietta has made several CD recordings, most recently one with three new compositions by Swedish composers, in January 2001. The Sinfonietta has also toured in Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe.

In Finland, his country of origin, Hannu Koivula holds the position of principal conductor and artistic director of the Joensuu City Orchestra. He previously served as principal conductor of the Björneborg Sinfonietta and was principal guest conductor of the Uleåborg City Orchestra. Elsewhere in Scandinavia, the Gävle Symphony Orchestra in Sweden and the Danish Radio Symphonietta have worked under Koivula as their main conductor. He is regularly engaged by the major orchestras in both Finland and Norway, as well as in Sweden, by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and both the Göteborg and Malmö symphonies. Koivula is sought after and appreciated by orchestras all over in Europe.

Presenting the Nordic romance

Karin Ingebäck, soprano
Anders Larsson, baritone
Matti Hirvonen, piano

From the booklet :

Artists Karin Ingebäck and Anders Larsson are established Nordic romance singers and are frequently giving concerts, accompanied by Matti Hirvonen on occasions. This recording is a collection of their favourite writers from the 1800-1900 golden era of romantic music, with works by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, Wilhelm Stenhammar, Jean Sibelius and Edvard Grieg, and some of the younger colleagues: Gunnar de Frumerie and Ture Rangstr-m, with specially chosen poems by Erik Axel Karlfeldt, Bo Bergman, Johan Ludvig Runeberg and Henrik Ibsen. Even though nature is the ongoing theme of this CD, it's mainly about life's greatest subject : love.

It also has a pedagogic undertone: During their classical music studies, Karin and Anders were forced to listen to old and worn out LP's because they couldn't find any suitable repertoire of recorded romantic songs. The situation isn't so different now, although the LP's have been completely replaced by a few and far-between CD's on romantic classics. They feel that this melodic CD will right the balance and be a perfect foil to the recent anthology of musical publications.

Karin and Anders hope this CD will capture the atmosphere of attending a live concert directly into your home. To further help in making this possible, Erik Sikkema's Ultra Linear Stereo Image (ULSI) is used in this recording.

"Folk music in Tails 2"

Junekvintetten and Friends

From the booklet :

Ten years ago we, the June Quartet, Junekvartetten, released a CD entitled "Folkmusik i Frack" "Folk music in Tails". To our delight, it sold very well. Since then we have grown to include a double bass, and our name has thus been changed to the June Quintet, Junekvintetten. This is our latest recording, for which we have explored new material, primarily in Sweden but also to some extent in Norway. The arrangements on this recording were made by friends of ours, most of whom come from the part of Sweden from which we hail:. The towns of Jönköping and Huskvarna in the province of Småland.

We approach folk melodies with deference and respect, in an effort to access the soul of folk music using many different voices. It is our aspiration to demonstrate the wealth of variation with which folk music can be played and sung.

This disc contains both music dressed in evening garb, and melodies where we have rolled up our shirtsleeves and loosened our bow ties. Sometimes you can even hear the influence of rock. Our playing is based on our own feelings, so the melodies may sound both faster and slower than the listener is accustomed to hearing them. We hope that you will enjoy the music, and should you feel the urge to dance to the sounds of the June Quintet, come on up and join us!

Mart Hallek is the driving force behind "Folk music Tails". He was born and bred in the town of Rättvik in the province of Dalacarlia, and professionally he has one foot in the world of classical music and the other in the world of folk. Mart has been working with groups including the regional music and drama ensemble "Smålands Musik och Teater" since 1982, always contributing his love of folk music to his efforts. Thus we have Mart to thank for making folk music a natural part of the artistic programme of "Smålands Musik och Teater".

The June Quintet: Mart Hallek, violin, Jacob de Verdier, violin, Nils Sjöberg, viola, Håkan Molander, cello, Anders Gerhardsson, double bass. The members of the June Quintet are all employed by "Smålands Musik och Teater" as well as being members of the Jönköping Sinfonietta.

Erland von Koch

From the booklet :

Erland von Koch (born in 1910), alderman of Swedish music, is one the few Swedish composers who has remained faithful, throughout his career, to his own personal musical heritage. He grew up in a somewhat bohemian family, one parent a musician the other an artist. Sigurd von Koch (1879 - 1919), his father, was a major early twentieth century Swedish song composer. Kaju von Koch, his mother, was an artist and book illustrator. In his memoirs (Musik & minnen, in Swedish only, English equivalent title "Music & Memories", Författarförlaget 1989), Erland von Koch describes her as a warm and creative woman. In the same book, he goes on to describe the difficulties involved in choosing a career in music. The family was divided regarding the question of becoming a musician. Choosing to be a composer then, became an appropriate route for him to follow. Erland von Koch often describes himself as a stubborn soul, and as a result of his persistence, his studies at the Stockholm Music Conservatory (1931-35) were the beginning of a long ecclesiastical career. His degree was in organ performance and church music. Then he went on to study abroad (1936 - 38): composition with Paul Höffer, conducting under Clemens Krauss and piano with Claudio Arrau. Upon his return to Sweden in 1939, he obtained a teaching position at K. Wohlfart's music school. During World War II, he worked as conductor and balance engineer for the Swedish broadcasting company. From 1953 through to 1975 when he retired, Erland von Koch taught theory and harmony at the Stockholm Music Conservatory, where he received the title of Professor in 1968. He was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1957.

The list of compositions by Erland von Koch is extensive, including six symphonies (notably number 6, "Salvare la terra" 1991-92), 12 Scandinavian Dances, Impulsi and the Oxberg trilogies for orchestra, as well as a dozen concerti for solo instruments, a children's opera ("Pelle Svanslös"), music for ballet and film, seven string quartets, additional chamber music works and songs. No matter what von Koch's musical material is based on, be it folk music or twelve tone technique, it is always infused with a personal and consonant sound, embodied in anything from light dialogue to full-bodied harmonic structures. In his compositions, he often strives to achieve a transparent simplicity, with a vigorous rhythmic character and simple harmonisations.

He once said: "the older you get, the more clearly you realize the importance of melody". von Koch's neo-classical simplicity is his mark. He adds nuance to it with both modern and traditional compositional techniques in a manner that has remained consistent throughout his career. History may very well come to regard Erland von Koch as the most significant Swedish postmodernist. The Eighteen Monologues were written both as instructive and recital pieces. They may be seen as a sort of pendant to Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra", in which each instrument has the opportunity to introduce itself independent of the orchestra. Each individual monologue focuses on investigating the potential of the instrument in question in terms of both timbre and expression. The monologues all open with a melodious movement and conclude with a fast one. As ever, the composer has not only woven in subtle references to folk music, but has also used a myriad of clever compositional techniques, which both challenge and reward the performer.

Image Selected Piano Music
Played by Olof Höjer

Olof Gullberg was born in Varberg in 1931. He studied Counterpoint and Composition with Hilding Rosenberg and Karl-Birger Blomdahl, piano with Herbert Westrell, instrumentation with Witold Lutoslawski in Poland and musicology at the University of Gothenburg. In 1976 he received the City of Gothenburg Cultural Award. Gullbergs music has been published by Nordisk Musikförlaget, Carl Gehrmans musikförlag, Eriksförlaget and Mills Music inc., New York.

Today Olof Gullberg is one of, presumably, few Swedish composers adhering to twelve-tone technique, but his is a highly personal variant, influenced by and sometimes also combined with French impressionism (Debussy, Ravel etc.). Arnold Schönberg and, above all perhaps, Anton Webern and Luigi Dallapiccola were important ideals of his. Another part of the same picture is his need for concentration, avoiding protracted time flows and imparting meaning and substance to every note. If the nowadays rather hackneyed phrase can be resorted to, Olof Gullberg's music is a striking instance of "less is more".

Olof Höjer, Malmö 2006

Olof Höjer was born in 1937 and grew up in Stockholm, where he studied at the Richard Andersson School of Music, under pianist Herbert Westrell and, between 1958 and 1970, with Gottfrid Boon, himself a pupil of Schnabel's. He made his début at the Stockholm Concert Hall in 1967 and the following year in Berlin and Vienna, but it was an all-Debussy recital in 1970 that attracted serious attention to his piano playing. A distinct breakthrough then followed with the series of four recitals, presenting the whole of Debussy's piano output, which he gave in connection with "French Music Spring" in Stockholm in 1985.

His recording début came in 1973 with music by 20th century Swedish composers (Alfvén, Mankell, Hallnäs, Karkoff and Mellnäs). Among his recordings the complete piano works by Erik Satie and Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, have both received critical acclaim. It's not without pleasure that I now place my compositions in the hands of someone who knows the way I like to have my music interpreted.

Herman Berens (1826-1880)

Maurice Karkoff - Pianomusik i urval

(Thomas Anderberg, Dagens Nyheter)

...Jennefelt's skill and sympathy are never in doubt and must surely be attributed to the years he spent as a singer in Eric Ericsson's chamber choir. He knows his creative craft as an insider...

..Another triumphant choral CD from Sweden...

(Rob Barnett, MusicWeb)

Works by Britten, Bruckner, Duruflé, Poulenc and others.

"There is something special about Virgin Mary songs. Perhaps the composers have imbued extra tenderness in honour of the pure Virgin, the Mother of God. One might of course think that merely Mary songs would be somewhat monotonous. But the music spans over a vast range of various modes and emotions. All the songs chosen we love to sing; each of them has a particular beauty of its own. This is for instance noticeable in the seven quite different settings of Ave Maria. The lyrics of the songs contain everything from quotations from the Bible to samples from contemporary poets. The music is mainly
composed in the last two centuries.
(Eva Svanholm Bohlin, conductor)

Korallerna was founded in 1978 by its conductor Eva Svanholm Bohlin. First the choir resided at the Lund Municipal School of Music. 1992-2001 it was associated with the Lund Cathedral School but today it is independent. The members consist of 23 young women aged 16-24. In Sweden Korallerna is best remembered for its televised morning concerts on Sancta Lucia Day in 1982, 1988, 2000 and 2001 and also for winning the first prize in the Swedish contest "Toner för Miljoner" in 2002 in which around 500 choirs participated.

Cantores Cathedrales is a choir of 12 young men around the age of 20. It grew out of the Lund Cathedral
Boys' Choir in the early 90s, and got its current name in 1993. In 2005 it developed into a smaller vocal
ensemble, performing a more advanced repertoire. The choir has had great success in Sweden and abroad, having won first prize at choir competitions in Limburg, Zwickau, Rhodes and Helsingborg and gold medals in Riva del Garda and Malta and the prize for best performed compulsory work in Montreux. The choir's founder and conductor is Eva Svanholm Bohlin.

Lund Cathedral Boys' Choir was founded by Eva Svanholm Bohlin in 1976 at the Lund Municipal Music
School under the name of Cantarellerna. Having appeared for some years as a descant choir, they started to
perform mixed choir repertoire in 1979. In 1987 the choir moved to Lund Cathedral and took its present name.
From the boys' choir two male choir groups have emanated, Domherrarna and Cantores Cathedrales.

"En mycket fin skiva"
(Nerikes Allehanda)

I Sverige kallat hackbräde. På cd:n "Episodes on a Journey" möter han svenska gitarristen Celia Linde.

Celia Linde, guitar; George Mihalache, cimbalom.

This electrifying duo employs a unique, world first combination of instruments, classical guitar and cimbalom. The dazzling passion of the classical guitar intermingling with the mystic cimbalom results in a heated and amorous dance over 137 strings. The music draws inspiration from cultures around the world.

Celia Linde is one of Scandinavia´s most prominent guitarists. She is internationally recognized and acclaimed by the guitar master Andres Segovia. She won the first Prize in International Segovia Fellowship Competition in New York, 1986. Andrés Segovia wrote:.."Her technique is exellent and her musicality exact, noble and expressive." Her guitar playing has attracted a large number of audiences around the world and her compositions have been compared to Jorge Morel.

George Mihalache is a gypsy and a native of Bucharest, Romania. He grew up in a family of folk musicians, so-called (lautari]. George started learning music from his grandfather who played the violin. Instead of violin he decided to play the cimbalom, a stringed percussion instrument related to the hammered dulcimer with roots in ancient Persia. The so-called "tambal" in Romania is used extensively in gypsy music and is a fully chromatic instrument with a range of four full octaves.

Skivans styrka sitter i närvaron, äktheten, tilltron. Musiken berör."
(Hallands Nyheter)

Image Memento mei
Easter in the Valley of Grace

We recorded this Cd in october 2010 in naantali's bridgettine church, which was built in the Middle ages as part of the valley of Grace convent. outside a storm was raging which, variously, sighed, blustered, howled, wailed and clattered. We could not do anything about it, so we accepted it as part of the recording process. our recording engineer Mika Koivusalo had four things to record: two singers, naantali church and the autumn wind of southwestern Finland.

Inside, the church was warm and bright. as the recording progressed, the profundity and darkness of lent gave way to the happiness of easter. For both of us, as singers, the pieces on this disc represent a personal journey from darkness into light. The songs depict the extremes of emotion: despair as well as incredulous exaltation. during rehearsals we discussed the songs' texts and moods in great depth. now we are happy that listeners to this recording can accompany us on our journey.

The majority of the chants are from a mediæval liturgy of the bridgettine sisters, Cantus sororum, material of which we are extremely fond. The sisters' songs are 2, 5, 6, 7, 13 and 16. The source of chants nos 1, 8, 9, 10 and 14 is Antifonarium Tammelense, a songbook that was probably used by the birgittine brothers in naantali. Chant no. 3 is from the Graduale Ilmolense whilst nos 4 and 17 are from the Graduale Aboense. no. 15 is one of today's songs of the bridgettine sisters. nos 11 and 12 are traditional mediæval songs, and both come from the same source, the Graduale Triplex. song no. 18 is from the book Liber hymnarius. The transcriptions of the songs from the manuscripts were prepared by one of the singers in vox silentii, hilkka-liisa vuori (M. Mus.). some of the songs come from published books.

A whisper goes through the entire record: Remember Me, Memento mei. in our everyday lives, a longing for heaven is never far away. With these songs we wish to convey the joy and solace of easter, the promise of resurrection every single day.
Lumen verum represents the beautiful bridgettine prayer poems. Agnus Dei, or 'the lamb of God', a eucharistic prayer, is a specific type of text associated with Maundy Thursday. in Deus meus both the shape of the melody and Jesus' words are anguished. in the song In manus tuas Domine, after the pain, the moment of death is calm. Jesu benigne is a song of yearning beside the cross of Jesus. In pace Patris is a surprising prayer: its melodic shape is very close to the world of lullabies.

Jesus' resurrection is depicted in the tiny song Alleluia. in our view, it is like a sunrise and the dawn of the day. This is followed by the large-scale responsory Dum transisset, in which the mood is of confusion: Christ is risen, but the women do not know it. after this, the music changes dramatically: the women's wistful song in the d mode yields to a powerful antiphon in the G mode: Angelus autem Domini.

The songs Pascha nostrum, Surrexit Christus and Regina celi express the joy of easter. in the brief responsory Exsultabo et laetabor we find gentle joy as well as profound longing. in Spiritus Domini the music is like a stealthy wind and mist. Benedicamus devotis is one of the most delicate songs on the disc. Surrexit pastor bonus is in the Phrygian mode. it depicts in music the Mystery: Christ is risen. in the last song, Dulcis Jesu memoria, the mediæval hymn and the modern lutheran hymn book converge. We sing an old version of the hymn and also a more modern one, sometimes overlapping and sometimes superimposed on each other. This is no. 300 in the hymn book, Jeesuksen muisto ihana (Jesus' Sweet Memory). We continue to await new heavens and a new earth. We should like to thank teivas oksala, alf härdelin, the parish of Käpylä, tuomo Pulkkinen and the Finnish Performing Music Promotion Centre (eseK). We should also like to express our gratitude to those admirers of mediæval prayer songs for their concert feedback, on the basis of which we chose the songs to be included on this recording.

The Copenhagen Girls' Choir
Claus Vestergaard Jensen, conductor

The Copenhagen Girls' Choir rates among the best of its kind in Denmark and has its home at the Sankt Annæ Gymnasium, the Copenhagen Municipal Choir School. The Copenhagen Girls' Choir was founded in 1973 and is under the patronage of HRH Princess Benedikte, and is resident choir at Helligaandskirken in Copenhagen (Church of the Holy Spirit). The Choir aims to balance between the more challeging and the more uncomplicated music in its programs. In this way the concerts appeal to both regular and new audiences. The repertoire is broad with special focus on new music and popular music. Many composers of stature have felt persuaded to write for the choir, among them Knut Nystedt, Ib Nørholm, Leif Kayser, Maj-Britt Kramer, Bo Holten and Michael Bojesen. The choir also performs music by classic composers such as Fauré, Poulenc, Brahms, Schubert and Rheinberger. The Copenhagen Girls' Choir is characterized by its homogenous sound, partly resulting from the fact that the girls are of the same age, partly a result of the careful voice-training that all the pupils of the Sankt Annæ Gymnasium go through. Image Meditations
Suoni Ensemble / Gerard Presencer

Meditations is an evocative and explorative mix of different and distinctive sounds written to four poems around the themes of Love, Loss, Hope and Peace. Siobhan wrote this piece in 2007 inspired by the desire to draw an improvised sound into a classical setting. Siobhan Lamb creates the musical dialogue by weaving together the lines of a string quartet, a vocal group specialising in medieval chant, a harpist, a percussionist from the world music tradition, as well as for one section the pure sound of a children's choir. This comes to life with the interaction over the top of Gerard Presencer's improvising mastery, as he responds with his world class trumpet playing. Siobhan wanted to infuse the classical tradition with the jazz world in an acoustic setting to allow the sounds their fullest expression. Siobhan also embraces silence within her piece to add further dimension to the landscape and to open up the space to everyone within in, Meditations has received glowing reviews following its London premiere at the London Jazz Festival in November 2007, described as 'unmissable', 'tantalising' and 'expansively beautiful'. (Guardian newspaper) Meditations was recorded at the Royal Academy of Music and was produced by Jeremy Summerly the award winning producer of many Early Music releases.

Image Nightingale and the Rose (The)
Compositions for big bands and classical choirs are seldom seen. The Nightingale and the Rose was originally commissioned by the WDR Big Band and Symphonic Choir in Germany. The piece celebrates the different approaches of the Big Band and Choir in order to share the Oscar Wilde story. The piece was performed by the Danish Radio Big Band and Choir in January 2011 in the beautiful Christians Kirke and it has recently been recorded there for release on Proprius Naxos. Siobhan Lamb is a classical musician with a jazz music background, and having a degree in English and Theatre Arts as well it all gives her a unique set of skills as a story telling composer.

Image Solaris
Piia Komsi's (b. 1967) new album 'Solaris' includes a collection of modern prayers, sung in six languages. The album contains works by some of Finland's leading composers, among others, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Tapio Tuomela, Aija Puurtinen, Heinz-Juhani Hofmann, as well as Mauno Järvelä. In addition to this, the selected collection of tracks for the album has been complemented with older church music, J.S. Bach's 'Aus Liebe' from St Matthew's passion, as well as French music and Russian vocal music. The album presents soprano Piia Komsi and the Zagros-string quartet, Anna Aminoff, flute and Pertti Eerola, organ.

The creation of Solaris came about as a result of Komsi's wish to commission some new work. The wish was also for various composers, representing different generations, to write different styles of spiritual music. 'The album project began at the Time of Music Festival at Viitasaari in 2003. At that time, I presented the works of Aleksander Raskatov and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsk with Zagros. The music of these two artists had a great influence on our concert audience. From this experience, I got the idea to commission new compositions, with a theme connected to ecumenical spirituality', says Komsi on the beginning stages of the album.

The tracks on the album are of different musical styles and, thus, challenging for the singer. A soprano is required in the works to have an expansive register, as well as a diverse vocal range. In addition to Finnish, the album has singing in, among others, Latin, German, Swedish, as well as Northern Sami and Aramaic. Despite the challenging repertoire, as much authentic live material as possible was desired for the album, so the final result would be, in most part, a concert style album. The album was recorded in 2011 during the Kaustinen Chamber Music Week, with Markku Veijonsuo in charge of the recordings. The album will be released on the Proprius record label.

Komsi is one of the most prominent Finnish sopranos. She is a requested soloist both in Finland and abroad with a varied repertoire from baroque music to contemporary works. Piia Komsi is satisfied with the material on the album. 'I am extraordinarily lucky to have been able to work personally with all of these vivacious composers. It is a joy to perform these compositions each time!' she delights.

"Performing the music of Mozart is like trying to tell a story everyone knows and has heard many times as if it were the very first time it has been told. It is a combination of musical pleasure and a wealth of variation in its execution. The Concerto for violin nr.3 in G major was composed in Salzburg in 1775, when Mozart was 19 years of age.We know from his letters that Mozart dreaded the first performance of the work by Concert Master Antonio Brunetti, who, according to Mozart was a blunt, reeking, mediocre violinist. He was however, greatly relieved when Frans Xaver Kolb performed the premiere instead. Kolb was a considerably more accomplished (and probably less offensive-smelling) violinist. The G major Concerto has always been a personal favorite of mine, and together with Rebaroque, I consider it a privelege to make it "ours," To tell, with our own eyes, ears and Jonas Dominique's fantastic wind arrangements, such a beautiful and moving story as this."
(Maria Lindal)

"Imagine if an amateur bassoonist in Austria around 1778 could have had the slightest idea what an impact his commissioning of a concerto for bassoon from an 18 year old composer would make 200 years later. I am thinking of Mozart's Concert for Bassoon, K.191b, commissioned by Freeman Thaddäus von Durnitz. Despite its wonderful music, it can arouse feelings of anxiety in bassoonists, even others, as it is used in auditions, competitions and such for many decades. The concert for bassoon was Mozart's first solo concert for a wind instrument. It is believed he wrote at least three concerts for bassoon, but only this one survives. Mozart's affection for wind instruments is reflected in his fantastic compositions for winds: Grand Partita for 13 winds, serenades, divertimento and such, all. As late as 1784 wrote Mozart in a letter that his quintet for winds and piano was his finest work to date! As a bassoonist I find nothing more pleasurable that performing his operas, with all their fantastic solos and colorings. Another reason for the amount of wind music from this time period is that it became "hip" for the upper class to learn a wind instrument in order to be seen, and they commissioned works from both known and unknown composers. This is in contrast to attitudes toward wind instruments during the 1800's, when they came to be considered "only" orchestral instruments. That was a time when piano, violin and cello dominated almost totally the fields of solo and chamber music. As a thought: How many "great" solo concerts after the year ca. 1811, when Weber wrote his concert, are written for bassoon? The quartet presented here should be seen as a showcase, exploiting the possibilities of all the instruments. As a bassoonist, playing a bassoon quartet of Mozart is fantastic fun. The original key was F major, it has been transposed here to B major in order to better fit the bassoon's register. And please excuse me all oboists, I think it works just as well on bassoon! And there IS a concert for oboe...?!! One interesting detail, the instrument I perform on is a copy of an instrument whose original was discovered on the wall of a widow living in Stockholm in the 1980's. The instrument's maker was Grenser, a famous reputational instrument-making family who supplied Europe with first class wind instruments for almost a hundred years."

This recording features French trombonist François Lemonnier and Swedish organist Karin Nelson performing music from a variety of periods and styles. They have chosen contrasting thematic material as a medium to reveal the adaptability of improvisational performance and to explore the netherworld that lurks in the margins of musical classification. These inventions originate from notated music from the Western tradition, including themes from Gregorian chant, folk music and jazz.

'Wickman’s death in 2006 left a huge, gaping hole in the Swedish musical scene. While he flirted with other genres (classical concerts in churches and glitzy showbiz extravaganzas on primetime TV), in the right company, this man would push jazz, his true art, to almost stratospheric levels of excellence. This album is a fitting and long overdue memorial to that side of his musical personality.'

"This beautifully recorded and compellingly played concert brings the sunshine of Spain into one's listening room and is strongly
recommended. Keep an eye (and both ears) on Gulyás; I hope that he and Proprius will bring us many more guitar discs."
(SA-CD.net)

"Yet the most incredible of all has to be Georg Gulyás' guitar recital [Proprius PRSACD 2030]. Don't think for a minute that it's just one guitarist, hence who needs five loudspeakers. The holographic presence of the guitar and the guitarist is so real that I could sit anywhere and both were still there in the same spot. As for skeptics, nothing is more convincing."

- "Cantus Sororum" (PRCD 2010)

- "Videte Miraculum" (PRCD 2021)

HÖGSTA BETYG I SVENSKA DAGBLADET

HÖGSTA BETYG I UPSALA NYA TIDNING

4 AV 5 MÖJLIGA I BETYG I SYDSVENSKAN

"It brings to a close a recording which I rate highly, even though one can't overlook that the performers are not Italian and that some of the pieces could have been performed with a little more drama. That said, the overall achievement of these Scandinavian musicians is impressive. The brilliance and emotional character of this repertoire is well communicated by this fine ensemble."
(musicweb-international.com)

'A sparkling diamond and definately one of my records of the year. I always find it difficult to write about older music because often I find that it sounds merely nice or not. But this SACD is so much more and it goes way beyond nice or not. It is a spiritual experience of vast proportions. Monteverdi, who wrote half of the music on this SACD, is the star composer here. His music is so original and emphatic, with his usual twists and turns. Zefiro torna is a pastoral for two tenors and continuo and in a typical Monteverdi fashion we move from a scenic painting to a personal feeling of loss and longing. The two tenors, Leif Aruhn-Solén and Johan Linderoth are esqusite in their handling of Monteverdi´s dissonances and in conveying the feeling of...so much to lose and long for. The highlight on this disc is the gorgeous Non havea Febo ancora where a young(?) lady is so incredibly sad and lonely after being left alone by a betrayer. I don´t know if Monteverdi had a sense of humour, but the comments made by the three men are hilarious. The lament by the nymph is heartfelt and the three men can only sigh and back her up. Poor lady in distress. This is sung by the superb contralto Lena Susanne Norin to perfection and she will make your heart melt, I promise. The rest of the programme consists of music by Carissimi and Castello and everything is performed with utmost taste and expertise and I guarantee that you will love this record! The sound in 5.0 is absolutely splendid. A generous acoustic and still lots of detail coming through. It is recorded by Torbjörn Samuelsson and his ears are among the most sensitive in the business.'
(Thomas Roth, SA-CD.net)

(Hallandsposten)

HARMONY OF VOICES was formed in the autumn of 2003 and rapidly established itself as one of the most exciting vocal ensembles in Sweden. The ensemble is made up of singers who also maintain solo singing careers in Sweden or
abroad. The starting point for the ensemble lies in the tradition of chamber music with the solo voice in harmony with other voices and with instruments. The repertoire is concentrated on Early Music and the ensemble's capacity to combine historical authenticity with creative interpretation has won it
considerable renown. The ensemble collaborates regularly with the leading authentic instrument early music bands in Sweden, notably the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble and the Stockholm Baroque Orchestra. Harmony of Voices also performs contemporary music and this has led to the ensemble premièring
a number of works specially composed for the group. Harmony of Voices was the Swedish Radio's "artist in residence" in 2004-2005. During this residency the ensemble undertook a number of highly regarded performances of music by composers such as Schütz, Buxtehude, Monteverdi, Desfontaine. Many
of the concerts were recorded by the Swedish Radio and have been broadcast internationally. Harmony of Voices' first CD, devoted to music by Charpentier, was warmly received both in Sweden and abroad and was nominated for a Swedish "Grammis" in 2004.
