Image Late String Quartets
The Brentano Quartet delivers the third volume of Beethovens Late Quartets for æon, this disc featuring Opp. 130 and 133. The relation between form and language seems to haunt all the writing of his Quartet in B flat major. Indeed, the composer struggles with the enigmatic question of our intimate experience in relation to music and the sense of musical composition. On the other hand, in the Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, Beethoven the visionary proclaims his unshakeable faith in a world like a will facing menace and chaos. The pertinence of the struggle marks the structure and character of every page of the quartet, one of the composers most inspired. Impossible not to be impressed by the sharpness of the stroke, the clarity of the discourse and the intensity of the affects. Brilliant virtuosos, the superb mastery of the Brentanos has made them famous and displays its full power in the release of this final volume.

Image Sei Suonate à Cembalo certato è Violino Solo, BWV
The violinist Chiara Zanisi works with the finest early music ensembles, notably the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman, with whom she has just finished a long tour performing the Six Brandenburg Concertos. She now devotes her first solo recording to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Sonatas for Harpsichord and Violin. Alongside her is Giulia Nuti, among the most brilliant harpsichordists and scholars in Italy, whose solo CD Les Sauvages: Harpsichords in pre-Revolutionary Paris (DHM) won a Diapason d’Or, among other awards. The kernel from which this project grew is their strongly shared idea that, in addition to great stylistic richness and invention, Bach’s music possesses an aura of magic and an almost divine form. Thus, in this valuable and elegant reading, it is clearly their intention to underline in the simplest way the grandeur of the writing. Even the choice of sound aesthetic, beautifully realised under the supervision of Fabio Framba, opts for the ‘real’ with a ‘pure’, ‘speaking’ sound, warm and full of harmonics. The attractions of this precious version of the Six Sonatas, played on a G. Gagliano violin of 1761 and a harpsichord by K. Hill, are enhanced by a bonus track: the Cantabile, un poco Adagio from the early version of Sonata VI in G major.

Image A Century Of Russian Colours
This recording is the result of the passion the young musicians Camille Thomas (cello) and Beatrice Berrut (piano) have always felt for Russian music. Whatever its period of composition, they find in this repertoire the profundity and complexity of the Slavic soul, taking to extremes the expression of human torments. Camille Thomas: 'For this recording we immediately thought of playing Russian music. In A Century of Russian Colours, we start with a very Romantic composition, Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata op.19. The programme continues with a very rarely recorded work, bearing the marks of Soviet communism, showing fear and anguish, but also the rigour and conformism of Dmitry Kabalevsky. We end with a young composer who is very highly thought of n the musical world: Lera Auerbach, one of the last artists to be stripped of Russian nationality, who now lives in the United States and Germany.'

Débora Russ Ensemble

With this album, Aeon pursues the adventure initiated two years ago with singer Débora Russ, who interprets some of her own songs for the occasion, set to music and arranged by Mauricio Angarita, as well as songs by Piazzolla and Leonardo Sánchez. When she revisits the works of the famous Argentine composer with passion and emotion, Débora Russ convinces us of their importance and of the profound resonance they find with us more than ten years after his demise. Moments of passionate lyricism alternate with romantic episodes and rhythmic effects brimming with energy, without individual and collective expression ever betraying the spirit of tango nuevo. An artist with a quite unique style.

Michael Jarrell claims for himself the status of a craftsman. Well aware that mastery of his art is acquired in the long term, he has often felt the need to return to the same object, considered from a different angle, when he judges that he now possesses more ef cient tools and can express his musical ideas with greater precision. Although he says he is fascinated by artists who constantly work at the same idea, he does not seek a reduction of this kind for himself, but rather moves from one work to another through a process of reactions. That attitude is illustrated by this new album in which works and performers intersect; and the artists here are the composer’s most loyal supporters.
The arborescences and ruptures, the profundity of the multiple levels of interpretation we can perceive in the pieces on the programme of this disc, make us conscious of the multiplicity of the levels of meaning present in his music. Michael Jarrell’s training as a visual artist has probably honed his sensitivity to forms still further. The impact on him of Paul Klee’s ideas, notably concerning the relationships between forms and movements, is doubtless not foreign to the way he animates the materials with which he composes.

Over and above his legendary career as leader of the Arditti Quartet, Irvine Arditti has worked on many solo projects and is still today one of the foremost interpreters of the music of our time. Over the past decade he has given the world premieres of a whole host of large-scale works written especially for him. His approach to the contemporary violin is fascinating. The works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Elliott Carter, Emmanuel Nunes and Pierre Boulez assembled in this album are among the most widely known in the recent repertory for violin, both on account of the transcendental character of the pieces themselves and the impetus they have given the instrument’s technique, but also and above all because of the accomplishment manifest in the variety of their modes of expression. Irvine Arditti’s performance of them on this disc is masterly and already sets a benchmark.

Olivier Cavé, piano

After the success of his two previous discs, devoted to Scarlatti and Clementi, pianist Olivier Cavé pursues his companionship with a Bach project. Throughout his extraordinary career, Bach never tired of copying by hand the music of others, and the sense of eclecticism that would drive him to reproduce and adapt works, namely Italian music, was his way of achieving a very personal synthesis and creation, where abstract speculation and poetry would find their place. These beautiful transcriptions were precisely at the origin of one of his master pieces, the Italian Concerto.

Céladon Ensemble underlines the obvious artistic connections between the music of English Renaissance and contemporary music.

This release is a clever mix of genres that points out to surprising similarities between these works: we could easily believe that Tye’s Sit Fast was composed very recently.

This parentage, harmonic, rhythmic and poetic logic, opens a whole field of exploration into sound identity and tradition.

Both composers, belonging to remote eras, dealt with timbre fusion in a similar way to create a full-bodied sound, both powerful and soothing.

The intensity of a violas consort that carries a certain magic, the paradoxical expression of a voice which is solitary but also becomes a sixth instrument, one of the violas.

An original programme with which the Swiss pianist Olivier Cavé succeeds in summarizing two universes that might, however, a priori appear remote: Domenico Scarlatti vs. Joseph Haydn. In the same album, Olivier Cavé confronts two complementary visions of the keyboard. 'With this project, I wanted to connect these two composers,' he tells us, 'for, when playing Haydn, I always had the feeling that he was familiar with Scarlatti's music.' For these two composers, the keyboard is the alphabet of a distinctive language; in a style both playful and mischievous, they composed with a bantering humour, unlimited amusement, unfailing virtuosity and a perfect sense of description.Paradoxically, the two composers meet in their slow movements, of unparalleled simplicity and amazing naturalness that give this music, generations apart, very great lyrical depth. This recording shows to what degree the impact of Scarlatti's music on Haydn's keyboard compositions is undeniable. For this project, Olivier Cavé has relied on the learned advice of the American musicologist Elaine Sisman.

Discantus . Brigitte Lesne

On Easter Day in the year 1043, King Edward the Confessor was crowned in Winchester Cathedral. Nearly 10 centuries later, the six women's voices of Discantus bring back to life the nascent polyphonies that were being written at the time in England: between Gregorian chant and organized two-part pieces, here we are at the beginnings of counterpoint and the practice of discantus (descant). These compositions are drawn from the Winchester Tropary, one of the most fabulous musical testimonies of the era, with most of the pieces selected centred on the Paschal period.

In mirror are inserted, like two shimmering stained-glass windows framed in the Romanesque stone, two compositions from today, commissioned by the ensemble on texts excerpted from Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy (c.524). These works, by two young composers - a Frenchman (Pierre Chépélov, born 1979) and a Briton (Joel Rust, born 1989) -, extend the musical exchanges that existed between the great island and the continent throughout the Middle Ages.

Eddy Vanoosthuyse, clarinet
Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra / Paul Meyer

A tribute to American music! An opportunity to sample some of the most up-to-date American music, with two masterpieces in the concertante genre: the clarinet concertos of Elliott Carter and John Corigliano.

Presented here by leading interpreters of this music, these two pieces are emblematic of the rich stylistic diversity of the American continent.

John Corigliano's Clarinet Concerto of 1977 showcases the soloist's virtuosity. It is a highly sensitive work in which the clarinettist plays the role of a valiant hero weathering the storm, the tumultuous, tempestuous material of the orchestra, glinting like a flash of lightning among the discordant detonations of the horns and the thunderclaps of the percussion. But the tumult soon makes way for dreams, the purely melancholy power of the music of this American master, sometimes recalling the most moving moments of his Violin Concerto, which served as material for François Girard's film The Red Violin (Oscar for Best Film Score 1999).

A different style and a different way of introducing the narrative is found in Elliott Carter's Clarinet Concerto, composed twenty years later, in 1997. This piece gives the impression of a veritable musical

dramaturgy, in which each instrument is treated individually. The composer also treats the concerto itself in a new way, since he sets up an alternating dialogue between the soloist and each of the instrumental groups, which are independent of each other and laid out in a semicircle. The style of the work is characterised by both virtuosity and precision in the articulations and the accents. Elliott Carter, whose 104th birthday is celebrated this year, is unquestionably one of the most inventive composers of his time.

Two worlds, two visions, given a magnificent performance by the clarinet of Eddy Vanoosthuyse under the baton of Paul Meyer.

There are certain types of music that affirm and triumph. Others suggest a distance, a gentle journey towards far-off lands. Jérôme Combier is of this race of vagabonds. His music plunges the listener into a deep, rarefied atmosphere, dense with multiple, ghostly apparitions that set the imagination free. Here and there, a line of shadows interferes between the real voices, as if coming out of nowhere. Straight away, Combier’s music does away with the references of pitches, the distinction between sounds, breaths and friction, gone into more deeply with the electronics and closely connected to rainfalls of sand, murmurs of the wind… The electronics have this function, eroding the sonority borne by the instruments, diluting harmonies and scales in gentle saturations, sounds loaded with grain. The works brought together in this album, performed by the nec plus ultra of the music of our time, immerse us in a diaphanous glow. This is a rare recording of the highest quality!

Mentioned by Dante amongst 'the most illustrious poets of his time, Thibaut de Champagne (1201-1253), also called 'Thibaut the Songwriter', was one of France's greatest trouvères (or 'musician-poet' in langue d'oïl).

He left us some sixty songs, cultivating highly varied musical genres: songs of love and of the crusades, pastourelles, hymns to the Virgin, jeux-partis... Count of Champagne and King of Navarre, grandson of Marie de France and great-grandson of Eleanor of Aquitaine, he was chosen by the Holy See and numerous barons to lead a new crusade in 1239. A seal from 1226 portrays him on horseback, brandishing his sword.

This disc proposes an anthology of his compositions, all coming from the very famous songbook copied at the end of the 13th century: the 'King's manuscript'. As a counterpoint to the songs and in harmony with them, it also presents motets and instrumental dances representative of the musical repertoires of the period.

This is music in tune with our own culture and, at times, would transmit its evidences. The vocal issue remains central, even in Brice Pauset’s catalogue: “The voice as an instrument,” he writes, “the voice as identity (and it then literally becomes human), and finally, the voice as an instrument of identity. Formed in l984 while its members were still students at the Paris Conservatoire, the Ysaÿe Quartet is named after the violinist and composer Eugene Ysaÿe (1858-1931), who was a powerful influence on the musical world of his day. The Ysaÿe captured international attention when it became the first French quartet ever to win the Grand Prize at the Evian (now Bordeaux) International String Quartet Competition in 1988. An extraordinary 1989 debut at the Salzburg Festival resulted in immediate re-engagement for the following summer and in January l992, the ensemble established itself as one of Europe's pre-eminent ensembles with highly acclaimed cycles of the six Mozart quartets dedicated to Haydn in both Salzburg and Vienna. Since then, the Quartet has been invited to play throughout the world and has made recordings for the harmonia mundi, Philips and Decca labels. The members of the Quartet are on the faculty of the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where they have established a special class for string quartets. Their repertoire is strongly based in the first Viennese School and this is the first CD of Joseph Haydn in what is to be a complete cycle of the 68 quartets for Aeon. To those who want to listen to him, Thierry Pécou relates the world, its expanse, beauty, and chaos, too, with the suffering of men and their mutilated memories. The trance of the Bahian candomblé, the Mozartian melodic sweetness, the virtuosic orchestration, the pre-Columbian musical archaeology: all these differences intermingle without getting lost in the Tout-monde that Thierry Pécou shares with us.

With the virtuosos of his Ensemble Variances, he takes us off into his Tout-monde (to borrow the lovely expression by the Martiniquais writer Edouard Glissant), cultivating his relations with the Other or the Elsewhere without diluting himself. Zefiro / Alfredo Bernardini

Harmonie & Turcherie: around the year 1800, Western music was experiencing a merging of two phenomena. On one hand was the success of a particular ensemble of wind instruments, boosted by the foundation of the royal and imperial Harmonie by Emperor Joseph himself in Vienna in 1782, the core of its repertoire being arrangements of famous opera arias; on the other, the fashion for orientalism, reflected in different expressions of the arts: painting, sculpture, architecture and music.

The typical octet of the Harmonie, consisting of pairs of oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons, was therefore reinforced by louder wind instruments such as trumpets, trombones, a contrabassoon or a cimbasso, as well as an array of percussion instruments - together, they could evoke the military bands of the highly feared Janissaries.

That sound fascinated the most eminent composers of the time, including Haydn (Joseph and his younger brother Michael), Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti (Gaetano and his elder brother Giuseppe, active at the Ottoman court), Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Spohr, all of whom wrote small, little-known masterpieces for this particular band. Zefiro presents us with a varied programme by these composers, alternating Turkish marches with chamber music works in a more operatic and deeper vein, thus revealing the versatility and colours of period wind instruments.

One of the most productive and versatile of Italian composers, Marco Marazzoli is remembered today principally for his part in the development of Roman opera. Or maybe not even that, seeing that his output is represented in current record catalogues by only a few scattered entries, amongst which the recording of La Fiera di Farfa by Vincent Dumestre (Alpha 172) is the most significant. And yet Marazzoli, who lived in the shadow of three great popes, is one of the most significant Roman composers of the mid-seventeenth century.

Besides which, his compositional skill, the originality of his style and the freshness of his melodies put him on a par with the greatest names of the Baroque era. For his debut album on the Arcana label - after three successful recordings issued on Ricercar and Alpha - Andrea De Carlo and his Ensemble Mare Nostrum explore one of the most noteworthy areas of his output: the secular cantata.

The scale of his production (379 items!) places Marazzoli among the big names in the history of the genre. The characteristics that distinguish these works are the stunning originality of the melodic lines that anticipate the great arias that will appear years later, and a great variety of form, style and subject. A good singer himself, he probed the vocal skills of his performers, which is why his music requires a sophisticated vocal technique for works where legato, coloratura, and extreme vocal ranges combine to delight the listener.

It is an important moment in the life of a singer when she is able to confront the standard repertory. After years spent studying theatre and music in Shakespeare's England under the guidance of musicologist Philip Brett, Jill Feldman recorded two programmes of Henry Purcell's music in 1992, reissued here as a double CD. Many of the ‘Ayres and Songs’ from Orpheus Britannicus are connected to the English theatrical tradition. In the earliest piece on this CD, ‘From Silent Shades’, and the latest, ‘From Rosy Bow'rs’, we hear one theatrical tradition – placing the voice of truth in the mouth of a madman. In the same way, we hear the wisdom of Touchstone in As You Like It, of Feste in Twelfth Night, and of King Lear's Fool. This programme, superbly accompanied by lutenist Nigel North, searches for that wisdom throughout. In the Harmonia Sacra recording, Purcell’s sacred hymns are interspersed with his complete organ works played by Davitt Moroney, with whom Jill Feldman had collaborated ever since their meeting in 1975 as part of Philip Brett’s ensemble at Berkeley in California.
