Image Promessa: Arias from Italian & French Operas
For her second CD on OehmsClassics, Sophia Brommer walks onto the operatic stage, presenting with Dirk Kaftan and the Augsburg Philharmonic an intelligently conceived bouquet of arias ranging from Bellini and Verdi, Leoncavallo and Donizetti to “Glitter and Be Gay” from Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. Sophia Brommer’s voice seems virtually ideal for roles such as Nedda in Pagliacci; not only there, she gives proof of the extraordinary talent with which she has been blessed.

Today, 100 years after Reger’s death, his music-historical ranking is undisputed at least in the German-speaking world; however, his public presence is by no means as great as his amazingly rich oeuvre, comprising all gen-res except opera, would lead one to expect. Max Reger was granted hardly more than 20 productive years. He was no less intensively involved in the obsessive distribution of his works as his own agent and interpreter – this personal union, too, was unique to him around the turn of the twentieth century. Following the conclusion of the composer’s com-plete organ works with Bernhard Buttmann, Oehms-Classics now proudly presents yet another complete edition – this time Max Reger’s works for the clarinet.

William Youn, piano

Late last year, part of Mozart's manuscript of the Sonata, K. 331 was found in Budapest. The manuscript, with the exception of the last page of the last movement, Rondo alla turca, had so far been considered missing under mysterious circumstances. The new Urtext, according to the pianist's statement, not only contains alterations in the phrase markings, articulation, rhythm and dynamics, but there are some different notes as well. The opening of the second movement is particularly interesting for William Youn: "With the new phrase indication and new note (A instead of Csharp) in the third bar, I play the entire phrase with a completely different agogic quality, which lends it a different character as well. Bars 24-26 of the same movement have always been played in the minor key up until now - and they are now suddenly in major!"

Maximilian Schmitt discovered his love for music already during his youthful years with the Regensburg Boys' Choir. It was still during his period in Munich that Maximilian Schmitt made his debut at the Salzburg Provincial Theatre as Tamino in The Magic Flute before accepting a four-year engagement with the Mannheim National Theatre.

In the meantime, Maximilian Schmitt sings in all the major opera houses.

The present recording is already his third CD for OehmsClassics.

Following Heine Lieder and Die Schöne Müllerin, Maximilian Schmitt proves with this recording that he hardly needs fear any competition in the area of romantic arias by composers ranging from Flotow and Weber to Wagner. He is sensitively supported by the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne under the direction of Patrick Lange.

This makes one want to hear more.” This was the verdict of Fono-Forum in the 07/2014 issue on Volume 1 of the piano works of Evgenij Gunst recorded by Susanne Lang. Carl Orff Choir, Marktoberdorf / Stefan Wolitz

The production of this extraordinary CD is based on two main aspects.

Firstly, the re-creation of the celebration of a Mass with purely musical means whereby not only the Ordinarium (Kyrie, Gloria, etc.) but also the Proprium (e.g. The Lord’s Prayer, Alleluia, etc.) are sung and/or played by the organ.

The second aspect is the contrast of a Mass setting from the Renaissance (from which all parts of the Ordinarium are taken, except for the Credo) with choral works of the 21st century. The idea here is, on the one hand, to create an exciting contrast and, on the other hand, to interconnect these different parts to form an organic whole.

Image Serenata
The compositional production of Leopold Mozart (born in 1719) has only been handed down in fragments. In Salzburg, where he lived from 1738 until his death, only sacred compositions by him are preserved in the Cathedral library. His oeuvre is thus – seriously decimated – only preserved in “secondary sources” from South German-Austrian monastery and libraries of the nobility, although – since special research has been carried on in Augsburg – the repertoire of Sinfonias is now growing. It is meanwhile out of the question, however, that “a big fish will be caught” again like the Serenade discovered during the 1970s at Seitenstetten Monastery. In the recording presented here, one can gain an overall impression of the composer’s oeuvre. And better interpreters than the bayerische kammerphilharmonie under Reinhard Goebel can hardly be found.

Walter Braunfels achieved his breakthrough as a composer during the 1920s with the opera The Birds (based on Aristophanes). Shortly thereafter he was, alongside Richard Strauss, one of the outstanding and most frequently performed German opera composers. His extremely versatile compositional oeuvre includes numerous operas, orchestral works and choral works, as well as Lieder, chamber music and piano works. He was praised as a forward looking representative of the New Music. The most famous conductors of the era, such as Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Hans Knappertsbusch, Fritz Busch, Hermann Abendroth, Hans Pfitzner, Arthur Nikisch and Günter Wand, performed his compositions in the great German music centres, in Vienna, London and New York. Braunfels regarded himself as a traditional late-romantic composer, a successor to Berlioz,Wagner and Bruckner. During the period of the Third Reich, he was dismissed as a “half Jew” from all offices and performances of his works were banned. After the Second World War, representatives of the musical avantgarde found Braunfels’s style no longer contemporary, which is why he gradually became forgotten. Since the 1990s, however, his complete oeuvre has been undergoing a wonderful Renaissance and is being enthusiastically rediscovered by the international musical world.
