I have long enjoyed performing and recording a wonderful variety of contemporary music by some of our most exciting and innovative composers. Most of this repertoire has been for voice and piano, or chamber ensemble, affording me the joy and privilege of working with numerous fine and distinguished musicians. This CD is however my first recording of contemporary music for solo piano, and has been a revelatory and inspiring experience. Introducing music written in our own time is at once a joy and a responsibility. Often, and despite our best efforts , some very good scores are heard on only a handful of occasions. For many listeners it will be their first encounter with a new composer. Thus a clear belief in the sound world of every composer one premieres is vital not just to the success of a new piece by to winning or losing potential admirers for living composers. The composers on this disc dwell in very different yet equally marvellous sound worlds. [Andrew Matthews-Owen] Andrew Matthews-Owen described recently as a ‘splendid keyboard artist’ (Fanfare Magazine USA), ‘an immaculate accompanist… dashing virtuosity’ (BBC Music Magazine) and ‘a superlative pianist’ (MusicWeb International), Andrew Matthews-Owen enjoys a busy career as a pianist and performance coach. He has partnered numerous leading contemporary singers and musicians and future engagements include recitals with Susan Bickley and Claire Booth featuring premieres of new works by Jonathan Dove and Augusta Read Thomas.

This delightful program of Japanese song is presented by renowned soprano Charlotte de Rothschild, joined by the City of London Sinfonia. Charlotte was first introduced to the beauty of Japanese music during her first visit to Japan in 1991. She learned Karatachi no hana (Quince flower) by Kohsaku Yamada for use as an encore piece, and the reaction she received from the audience led her to take on further Japanese repertoire exploration. “…I discovered the joys of kakyoku- their version of art song and of dou-you- a kind of traditional song. I know that the wonderful orchestration created for these songs, which were original written with piano accompaniment, lifts them to a whole new level…” (Charlotte de Rothschild)

From the beginning of the century the flute was chief among the instruments preferred by enthusiasts, as well as the highly educated non-professional connoisseurs. The flute, in its late 17th century form, being a relatively ‘modern’ instrument – and a fashionable one - joined with the keyboards in a pivotalrole. The previously dominant violin drifted more and more into the domain of professional musicians and virtuosos. And perhaps the sound of a flute, idiomatic of the human voice, was a more natural partner for the expression of bourgeois sensitivity than that of a violin.

Émile Jaques-Dalcroze composed in almost all genres except religious music. His style and aesthetic approach were characterized above all by his exceptional melodic gift and the originality of his feeling for rhythm. Though close to the French school, he also felt the influence of German post-romanticism. In this respect he was representative of the young French-speaking Swiss composers of the late nineteenth century, alternating between the Latin and Germanic extremes in their country and often receiving a double education in Berlin or Leipzig, and Vienna or Paris. Jaques-Dalcroze’s orchestral music languished in total oblivion until the beginning of the 21st century, but has since then been the subject of a significant rehabilitation attempt by means of the recordings made possible through the talent and musicological work of the conductor Adriano.
