Niklas Sivelöv, piano

Malmö Symphony Orchestra • Victor Aviat
Track 1-3: Concerto Classico for piano and orchestra
Track 4-7: Concerto No. 2 for piano and strings

Livgardets Dragonmusikkår • David Björkman
Track 8-10: Concerto No. 5 "Riddarkonserten" for piano and brass band

Niklas Sivelöv is never “just” composer or “just” pianist. His aim is the same in both fields – just as it is the same in music, and in conversation as well. We must experience the vault of the sky with the right sound and hopefully come together to experience the timeless feeling of spirit.

Image Symphony No. 1
Maestro Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig present the first fruit of their integral Brahms symphonies project with a recording of the composer’s First Symphony in C Minor, alongside his Tragic Overture. Once celebrated as “Beethoven’s Tenth”, Brahms’ first attempt at the symphonic genre was generally greeted as the most promising answer to Beethoven’s legendary legacy, and solidified his musical reputation. For Blomstedt, bringing these Brahms pieces into the world in the strange year of 2020 has a special significance, as Robert Schumann, Brahms’ close friend and mentor, once pointed out that it is the musician’s mission “to bring light into the depths of the human soul”. The euphoric finale of Brahms’ First Symphony, evidently inspired by Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, fully conveys this message of hope and Blomstedt’s unshakable belief in the imperishable power of the human spirit. Blomstedt’s work as a conductor is inseparably linked to his religious and human ethos, and his interpretations combine great faithfulness to the score and analytical precision with a soulfulness that awakens the music to pulsating life. In the more than sixty years of his career, he has acquired the unrestricted respect of the musical world. The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is the oldest civic orchestra in the world with a glorious history, and is still counted among the world’s leading ensembles. Both make their PENTATONE debut.

Image Peter Grimes (2 SACD)
‘The burly Aussie tenor is now even more identified with this ill-fated protagonist than Peter Pears, the first Grimes. And everywhere Skelton has sung the part, whether at English National Opera, the Proms, the Edinburgh festival or now on this international tour of a concert staging mounted by the Bergen Philharmonic, the conductor has been Edward Gardner. Theirs is one of the great musical partnerships, and they continue to find compelling new depths in this tragic masterpiece.’ – Richard Morrison – The Times. This studio recording was made following the acclaimed production at Grieghallen, in Bergen, in 2019 (repeated in Oslo and London and reviewed above). Luxuriant playing from the Bergen Philharmonic and a stellar cast under the assured direction of Edward Gardner make this a recording to treasure.

Image Die Schöpfung (2CD)
Giovanni Antonini has been recording the complete symphonies of Joseph Haydn with the Alpha label for more than five years. Now the series is enriched by another monument by the Austrian composer: Die Schöpfung (The Creation), recorded in 2019 with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and his own orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico. This great oratorio was inspired by those of Handel, which Haydn heard performed by very large forces during his visits to England. The Creation, composed between September 1796 and April 1798, demanded such a colossal effort of him that he even fell ill just after its first performance; but the work enjoyed immense success. The marriage between the Bavarian chorus, so familiar with this masterpiece, and the period-instrument musicians of Il Giardino Armonico works perfectly, with a vocal trio composed of leading soloists: Anna Lucia Richter, Maximilian Schmitt and Florian Boesch.

No fewer than three important ?rst recordings of works by Duarte Lobo feature on an album which is set to enhance Cupertinos’ burgeoning reputation. This is music with which they feel a natural kinship, as these intense, idiomatic performances attest.

Amanda Ginsburg is a rising star in Swedish music, with a Swedish Grammy in the category Best jazz album 2018. She sings like an angel, with the tantalizing combination of innocence and wisdom that the word implies.

On September 11 she will release her second album I det lilla händer det mesta (essence of the title in English
would be: Every journey begins with a single step). During the spring Amanda released two singles and she and her quartet has performed live on the Swedish channel 4 morning show and in July they performed for a second time in one of Swedens most loved tv programs, the sing-a-long show called Allsång på Skansen. Now they are more than ready to start their release tour.

Since Amanda Ginsburg’s debut album was released in 2018 she has received several scholarships and prices. From SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) she recieved a jazz price with the motivation: There is an echo of our legendary jazz singers in her music. She has the ability to create particularly charming songs which are inspired by her heritage but speaks with a completely unique voice.

In February 2019 Amanda received a Swedish Grammy for Best Jazz
This is what Amanda says about the new recording: I see this second album as a continuation of my first. Here are the everyday and sometimes a bit banal stories
that make up such a large part of my life and often also yours. In the little everyday life I find endless
inspiration. When I start too big, I actually get nothing done.

Image Il Tamerlano - Vivaldi Edition Vol. 65 (3CD)
Thanks to this tenth recording by Accademia Bizantina in the central core of the Vivaldi Edition, Il Tamerlano can now take its justly earned place in the Vivaldi catalogue, helping to renew the name and reputation of Timur, the Tartar emperor whose memory was later overshadowed by the Ottoman sultan. Vivaldi's opera was first performed during the Venice Carnival of 1735, and resurrected in 2005 under the title Bajazet. Here, under the musical direction of Ottavio Dantone, we have a sextet of dramatically engaged virtuoso soloists, and an orchestra that is perfectly aware of Vivaldi's musical dialectic. All the soloists are superbly well equipped to deal with the Red Priest's acrobatic and inventive writing – here seen in the context of several of his contemporaries. To meet the wishes of the Accademia Filarmonica that gave him the commission, Vivaldi chose to set a libretto by Agostino Piovene, who was famed throughout Italy, and the composer decided on the form of the pasticcio, enabling him to profile his principal singers by bringing in arias from his own works, also from operas by other composers such as Giacomelli, Farinelli's brother Broschi, and Hasse. Bernardo Ticci's edition used in this recording also inserts five further insertion arias that were definitely sung at the 1735 performance, but are absent from the score. In spite of the composite nature of the work, Il Tamerlano is an accomplished musical drama presenting a wide palette of emotions and colours inspired by elements of love and war. Particularly moving is Irene's famous aria of despair 'Sposa son disprezzata' from Act II of Giacomelli's opera, sung here by Sophie Rennert, also Timur's impassioned 'Dov’è la figlia?', and 'Barbaro traditor', Bajazet's Act III aria by Broschi, sung here by Filippo Mineccia in the role of Bajazet.
