Image Symphony No. 1

Maestro Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig present the first fruit of their integral Brahms symphonies project with a recording of the composer’s First Symphony in C Minor, alongside his Tragic Overture. Once celebrated as “Beethoven’s Tenth”, Brahms’ first attempt at the symphonic genre was generally greeted as the most promising answer to Beethoven’s legendary legacy, and solidified his musical reputation. For Blomstedt, bringing these Brahms pieces into the world in the strange year of 2020 has a special significance, as Robert Schumann, Brahms’ close friend and mentor, once pointed out that it is the musician’s mission “to bring light into the depths of the human soul”. The euphoric finale of Brahms’ First Symphony, evidently inspired by Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, fully conveys this message of hope and Blomstedt’s unshakable belief in the imperishable power of the human spirit. Blomstedt’s work as a conductor is inseparably linked to his religious and human ethos, and his interpretations combine great faithfulness to the score and analytical precision with a soulfulness that awakens the music to pulsating life. In the more than sixty years of his career, he has acquired the unrestricted respect of the musical world. The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is the oldest civic orchestra in the world with a glorious history, and is still counted among the world’s leading ensembles. Both make their PENTATONE debut.

Track 4-7: Concerto No. 2 for piano and strings

Livgardets Dragonmusikkår • David Björkman
Track 8-10: Concerto No. 5 "Riddarkonserten" for piano and brass band

Niklas Sivelöv is never “just” composer or “just” pianist. His aim is the same in both fields – just as it is the same in music, and in conversation as well. We must experience the vault of the sky with the right sound and hopefully come together to experience the timeless feeling of spirit.

Image Die Schöpfung (2CD)
Giovanni Antonini has been recording the complete symphonies of Joseph Haydn with the Alpha label for more than five years. Now the series is enriched by another monument by the Austrian composer: Die Schöpfung (The Creation), recorded in 2019 with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and his own orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico. This great oratorio was inspired by those of Handel, which Haydn heard performed by very large forces during his visits to England. The Creation, composed between September 1796 and April 1798, demanded such a colossal effort of him that he even fell ill just after its first performance; but the work enjoyed immense success. The marriage between the Bavarian chorus, so familiar with this masterpiece, and the period-instrument musicians of Il Giardino Armonico works perfectly, with a vocal trio composed of leading soloists: Anna Lucia Richter, Maximilian Schmitt and Florian Boesch.

Two of the most important albums from the Scandinavian folk music scene on a compilation album: Ulf Gruvberg’s and Carin Kjellman’s album Folk och Rackare from 1976 and the album Rackarspel, which they released after forming the group Folk & Rackare together with Norwegians Jørn Jensen and Trond Villa in 1978. Carin Kjellman and Ulf Gruvberg – honorary prize recipients at the 2018 Folk and World Music Gala – are legends, both as folk musicians and for their doubly educational efforts as radio hosts and editors on the Swedish Radio. Their cooperation began in Gothenburg in 1970. Soon, they began botanizing and modernizing medieval ballads. Their music also struck a balance between conservation and breaking new ground.

Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan made their first recording of the St Matthew Passion in March 1999. Twenty years later, in April 2019, it was time once again, as the singers and players gathered in the Concert Hall of the Saitama Arts Theater in Japan. ‘A profound joy’ is how Masaaki Suzuki describes his emotion at the opportunity to record Bach’s great fresco of Christ’s Passion for a second time. And this time, he and his ensemble have brought with them into the concert hall a profound and collective familiarity with Bach’s choral music, after having recorded more or less all of it in the meantime, including the complete sacred cantatas. For his Evangelist, Suzuki has selected the young German tenor Benjamin Bruns, making his first appearance on BIS. Among the other soloists are familiar names including Carolyn Sampson, Damien Guillon, Makoto Sakurada and Christian Immler.

Was Weber born only to compose Der Freischütz? So, at least, many people have thought, forgetting the existence of a catalogue of more than 300 compositions in every genre. The Piano Quartet, the work of a 22-year-old, already displays the first signs in music of that fantastic Romanticism that E. T. A. Hoffmann was exploring at the same time. As for the delightful Sonatas for piano and violin of 1810, refused by the publisher for their blatant originality (!), they airily mix different styles in an exotic multinational rendezvous.

Image Kanon Pokajanen
The 'Kanon Pokajanen' (Canon of Repentance), premiered in March 1998, is Arvo Pärt’s most monumental composition.

Its prolonged genesis, a meticulous process of assimilation of the text in Church Slavonic, and the austerity and subtlety of its style embody the same sincerity, the same spiritual and contemplative radiance as an icon painting.

He was commissioned by KölnMusic GmbH to write a work commemorating the 750th anniversary of the building of Cologne Cathedral. He finished it in 1997 and it premiered at Cologne Cathedral on March 17, 1998.

'Kanon Pokajanen' exhibits characteristics of Pärt's tinntinabular style and the piece remains almost exclusively in D minor, deviating only in particularly expressive passages and sometimes final cadences. Overall, the melodies and harmonies remain fairly static throughout.

Amanda Ginsburg is a rising star in Swedish music, with a Swedish Grammy in the category Best jazz album 2018. She sings like an angel, with the tantalizing combination of innocence and wisdom that the word implies.

On September 11 she will release her second album I det lilla händer det mesta (essence of the title in English
would be: Every journey begins with a single step). During the spring Amanda released two singles and she and her quartet has performed live on the Swedish channel 4 morning show and in July they performed for a second time in one of Swedens most loved tv programs, the sing-a-long show called Allsång på Skansen. Now they are more than ready to start their release tour.

Since Amanda Ginsburg’s debut album was released in 2018 she has received several scholarships and prices. From SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) she recieved a jazz price with the motivation: There is an echo of our legendary jazz singers in her music. She has the ability to create particularly charming songs which are inspired by her heritage but speaks with a completely unique voice.

In February 2019 Amanda received a Swedish Grammy for Best Jazz
This is what Amanda says about the new recording: I see this second album as a continuation of my first. Here are the everyday and sometimes a bit banal stories
that make up such a large part of my life and often also yours. In the little everyday life I find endless
inspiration. When I start too big, I actually get nothing done.
