Peter Mattei sings Schubert’s Winterreise
Peter Mattei has won great acclaim as a singer with unusual dramatic gifts, appearing on the world’s leading stages in complex operatic roles such as Don Giovanni, Billy Budd and Eugene Onegin. On the present disc he takes on a no less complex character in the Lieder canon: the traveller in Schubert’s Winterreise. In this cycle, Schubert returned to the poet Wilhelm Müller, whose poems he had set some years earlier, in his other great song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin. Müller’s texts revolve around a young man who after being rejected leaves his village and heads into the desolate, snowy countryside. In the course of the cycle he experiences loss and an aching loneliness interrupted by fleeting glimpses of hope, but ultimately the landscape through which he is moving is coloured by alienation and despair. Müller died thirty-two years old in 1827, the very year in which Winterreise was composed – and Schubert himself died the following year, still making revisions to the last of the songs while on his deathbed. When Schubert invited his closest friends to a gathering in order to listen to the cycle he called the songs ‘gruesome’, and according to one witness the audience was shocked by their sombre mood. In this recording, Mattei brings all his interpretive skills to bear. He is supported by the piano of Lars David Nilsson, which reinforces the different moods and characters of the twenty-four songs and often assumes the role of a narrator, alongside the singer.

Christ on the Mount of Olives (Christus Am Ölberge
Composed in 1803, while Beethoven was also writing the ‘Eroica’ Symphony, Christ on the Mount of Olives (Christus am Ölberge) is the composer's only oratorio, and combines the emotive force of his later Missa Solemnis with the theatre of a Bach Passion. With orchestra, chorus and soloists, it tells the story of Jesus’ prayer and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and reflects the emotional pressure Beethoven was under at the time. This recording by Sir Simon Rattle, with acclaimed singers Elsa Dreisig, Pavol Breslik and David Soar was made during the London Symphony Orchestra's celebration of Beethoven's 250th anniversary.'When I came to the Mount of Olives, I immediately was simply puzzled. Why isn't this piece played? Of course, it's a mixed piece and there are weird flaws and edges but so there are in the Ninth Symphony, they're part of the personality. He'd written the Heiligenstadt Testament, where he really confessed to his suicidal thoughts on losing the single-most important ability a musician could have. Eleonor är uppvuxen i en musikerfamilj i Morgongåva och fann tidigt sin plats i studion och på scenen. Vi har tidigare sett Eleonor som Rå ”De två systrarna” (2003) som specialskrevs för henne av Mats Wester & Py Bäckman. Eleonor är en erfaren sångerska som också varit med i vokaljazzgruppen Vocation samt som en del av tjejgruppen The
Vocalettes som bl a hyllats för sitt album ”In the spirit of Andrew Sisters” 2009.
Eleonor har turnérat i Europa med bl a Duke Ellingtons ”The Sacred Concert” och samarbetat på inspelningar med bl a Tommy Körberg, Björn & Benny och Kalle Moraeus. & JOEL LYSSARIDES
Med sig har hon den hyllade pianisten Joel Lyssarides (född 1992). Joel har befunnit sig i den musikaliska hetluften under de senaste tio åren och har samarbetat med bl a artister som Silvana Imam, Anne Sofie von Otter, Dirty Loops, Benny Andersson, Nils Landgren, Kristin Amparo och Blacknuss för att nämna några. Symphony No. 1
Maestro Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig present the first fruit of their integral Brahms symphonies project with a recording of the composer’s First Symphony in C Minor, alongside his Tragic Overture. Once celebrated as “Beethoven’s Tenth”, Brahms’ first attempt at the symphonic genre was generally greeted as the most promising answer to Beethoven’s legendary legacy, and solidified his musical reputation. The Art of Classical Guitar Transcription
Christophe Dejour’s arrangements of music by Albeniz and Granados performed by Trio Campanella have won much acclaim. For this recording he has made three pioneering arrangements that further expand the instrument’s repertoire and compass. Dejour’s arrangement of Gesualdo’s Canzon Francese del Principe is both expressive and idiomatic, and he explores two great 20th-century works in Berg’s milestone Piano Sonata, Op.1and Bartók’s profound and complex Sonata for Solo Violin which was inspired by Bach.

Under Göteborgsoperans gångna kvartssekel har operagenren nästan kommit att anses som omistlig för göteborgarna. Att detta inte alltid varit fallet önskar texthäftet till volym 17 — Operans motiga väg till Storan — påminna om genom att de tillhörande tre cd-skivorna är en dokumentation av Göteborgsoperans föregångare, den i höst hundraåriga Lyriska Teatern och dess verksamhet under sina första tre decennier t.o.m. 1952.
AB Göteborgs Lyriska Teater i Göteborg var namnet på Stora Teaterns radikala omstart efter att under mer än sex decennier ha varit gästspelsscen för diverse kringresande operett- och operasällskap. Efter en grundlig modernisering kunde den från och med 2 september 1920 erbjuda inte bara göteborgarna utan även kultursverige kompletta operauppsättningar med allt vad ett operahus kräver av solister, kör, balett, orkester, scenarbetare, verkstäder och annat.
During the last 25 years at the Gothenburg Opera, the opera genre has almost become indispensable for the people of Gothenburg. However, this has not always been the case, as this documentation of its predecessor, the centenary AB Göteborgs Lyriska Teater, wants to remind us of, as well as its oldest history as a guest performance stage for more than six decades. About fifty once great, but today forgotten stage artists, who were born between 1860-1924 and who have all stood on the grand theatre's stage, show us in gramophone recordings and in Swedish Radio's live glimpses how to squeeze the essence of a Swedish text and make it carry over the edge without the support of microphones.
