The latest release from Footprint Records – Wooden Bodies – is a snapshot of a decade of contemporary creativity within the string quartet genre and celebrates the Malva String Quartet’s appetite for the new and unusual – for novel ways in which the ‘wooden bodies’ of the ensemble, both human and instrumental, might converse, argue, interact and celebrate. The Malva Quartet is definitely one the most exciting string quartets in Sweden and their driving force is curiosity. ‘We play music that we are passionate about and we want to provide high quality and intensely communicative musical experiences. When we set our programs we try to push the boundaries, experimenting with sounds and expectations. We love to collaborate with other artists and we have a playful approach to music making and concert creation.’ Karin Rehnqvist’s The Riddle is a single-movement work that threads a typically simple, folk-like melody on a journey through the quartet’s varied expressive capabilities. ‘I try to find ideas that are simple but have complexity inside, so that you can make more out of it,’ the composer has said. Tebogo Monnakgotla was nominated for the 2018 Nordic Council Music Prize. Her score Wooden Bodies from 2018 was commissioned by the Malva Quartet. It is a piece both elusive and tangible, presenting a theatrical interplay between the four ‘wooden bodies’ of the string quartet which appear to long for unification. My Desert, My Rose by Aleksandra Vrebalov is based on the idea of individuality in a string quartet: ‘what one brings to the group, what one gives to the others and what one gets from them.’ Lo Kristenson has focused on music in circular, twisting forms that explore the minute details of resistance, energy, pressure and slow growth. Her score vridna, vågsång explores the idea of resistance in the instruments, adding vocal sounds too.

The coloratura soprano Sofie Asplund, has since she graduated from University College of Opera in Stockholm 2013, excelled in her major role debuts at the Gothenburg Opera, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, Finnish National Opera and The Norwegian National Opera and Malmö Opera. She has been rewarded with scholarships such as Birgit Nilsson, Anders Wall, Stena A Olsson, Royal Music Academy and Drottningholm Court Theatre grant. 2018, she became the first artist to win the newly established singing competition Shymberg Award.

Bringing together Benjamin Britten’s Les Illiuminations and Claude Debussy’s Ariettes Oubliées is like peeking behind the door to one of the most mythical bedrooms in literary history. There sit the poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, working frantically away. They write on loose sheets of paper, promissory notes and receipts. The ink drips, the papers are full of wine stains and food scraps. They are unwashedand unshaven. They drink, quarrel and sleep with each other. Verlaine writes texts that will be included in the collection of poems Romances sans paroles, taken by Debussy as a starting point for Ariettes Oubliées. The poems that Rimbaud is working on will much later be published as Les Illuminations.

Sei Solo är italienska och kan översättas med ”Sex solon”

fullt avsiktlig. När Bach renskrev manuskriptet till de tre
sonatorna och tre partitorna för soloviolin 1720 var han
nybliven änkling. Verket, med en speltid på över två timmar,
har sammanlagt 32 satser. Den 21:a av dessa är den ikoniska
ciacconan med sina 32 variationer över en ackordföljd.

Gitarristen Mats Bergström debuterade som skivartist 1986
med albumet "English Guitar Music" på skivmärket Polar. Tre
decennier och ett stort antal album senare kände han sig
redo att spela in sin egen gitarrversion av Sei Solo.

Sei Solo is Italian for “Six Solos” but also for “You Are Alone”.
The dual meaning may indeed have been intentional. When
fair-copying his manuscript to the three sonatas and three
partitas for solo violin in 1720, Bach had become a widower.
The work, with a duration of well over two hours, has a total
of 32 movements. The 21st of these is the iconic Ciaccona in
D minor with its 32 variations on a chord sequence.

The Swedish guitarist Mats Bergström made his debut as a
recording artist in 1986 with the Lp “English Guitar Music”
for the Polar Music label. Three decades and numerous
albums later he felt ready to record his own guitar version
of Sei Solo.

This ninth volume of the Haydn2032 series focuses on the composer’s psychological subtlety in its focus on a central work: his Symphony no.45, known as the ‘Abschieds-Symphonie’ (‘Farewell’ Symphony), composed in 1772. It is said to have got its nickname from a symbolic message Haydn conveyed to Prince Esterházy when he and his orchestra were required to stay longer than planned in the Prince’s summer residence. On the occasion of the symphony’s first performance, Haydn had arranged for the musicians to leave their places one by one during the final Adagio. The day after the concert, all the musicians were able to return to their families and bid farewell to the Prince, who had obviously taken the point of this poetic request for ‘liberation’ expressed in music. The programme is completed by Symphonies nos. 15 and 35 and a cantata sung by Sandrine Piau, the heart-rending ‘Berenice, che fai?’ on a text by Metastasio that was a real ‘hit’ of the eighteenth century, set by some forty composers.

It was when Delphine Constantin-Reznik took up the post as harpist in the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra that she first came across the name Anton Pratté, well-known in his lifetime as a harpist and composer. Her research into the music and activities of this forgotten master has now resulted in the very first recording of any of his numerous compositions for the harp. Anton Edvard Pratté was born in Bohemia into a family that ran a touring puppet theatre. He came to Sweden as an adolescent, and soon made a name for himself, performing music of his own as well as by others. Pratté gave concerts across Sweden, as well as in Norway and Finland, and in the 1840s even went on an extensive tour of Europe, performing in Berlin (where members of the Prussian royal family were in the audience), Vienna and Prague. But much of his life was spent in the area around Norrköping where he taught the daughters of wealthy landowners and for a while conducted the local orchestra society – the forerunner of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra heard in the Grand Concert which opens the present disc. This is followed by two works for solo harp, both making use of traditional tunes from Sweden and Norway respectively.

Giovanni Antonini has been recording the complete symphonies of Joseph Haydn with the Alpha label for more than five years. Now the series is enriched by another monument by the Austrian composer: Die Schöpfung (The Creation), recorded in 2019 with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and his own orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico. This great oratorio was inspired by those of Handel, which Haydn heard performed by very large forces during his visits to England. The Creation, composed between September 1796 and April 1798, demanded such a colossal effort of him that he even fell ill just after its first performance; but the work enjoyed immense success. The marriage between the Bavarian chorus, so familiar with this masterpiece, and the period-instrument musicians of Il Giardino Armonico works perfectly, with a vocal trio composed of leading soloists: Anna Lucia Richter, Maximilian Schmitt and Florian Boesch.

discovering new worlds. The Guitar is probably the world’s most nomadic instrument with branchings in every culture and genre of the world. "Nomad" is a 58-minute long, unbroken musical journey through inner and outer landscapes:
constantly shifting through memories, dreams, yearning and restlessness.
The musical inspiration comes from the extensive touring The Gothenburg Combo has done for more than
20 years. (hundreds of concerts on all continents, except Antarctica). Influences from Gamelan, South American, West African and Chinese music are mixed with the duo’s roots in Minimalism, Spanish Guitar and
Contemporary Classical Music.
Åke Linton, the ”fourth member” of the legendary Swedish jazz trio EST, has produced the album.
