(Musikrevyn i P2)

Despite her tragically early death at the age of 25, Vítezslava Kaprálová left a portfolio of more than 50 works of the highest craftsmanship and inspiration. this selection of her orchestral music, recorded at the Kaprálová Festival in Michigan, includes the work that won her international esteem in 1938, the Military Sinfonietta. abounding in youthful energy and brilliant colors, the Piano Concerto marries virtuosity with lyricism, while the orchestral songs are both atmospheric and striking.

(Musikrevyn i P2)

Göteborg Baroque is pleased to announce the release of Johan Helmich Roman’s Then Svenska Messan, one of the most significant and beloved works in Swedish music history.

(Johanna Paulsson, Opus)

The latest release from Footprint Records – Wooden Bodies – is a snapshot of a decade of contemporary creativity within the string quartet genre and celebrates the Malva String Quartet’s appetite for the new and unusual – for novel ways in which the ‘wooden bodies’ of the ensemble, both human and instrumental, might converse, argue, interact and celebrate. The Malva Quartet is definitely one the most exciting string quartets in Sweden and their driving force is curiosity. ‘We play music that we are passionate about and we want to provide high quality and intensely communicative musical experiences. When we set our programs we try to push the boundaries, experimenting with sounds and expectations. We love to collaborate with other artists and we have a playful approach to music making and concert creation.’ Karin Rehnqvist’s The Riddle is a single-movement work that threads a typically simple, folk-like melody on a journey through the quartet’s varied expressive capabilities. ‘I try to find ideas that are simple but have complexity inside, so that you can make more out of it,’ the composer has said. Tebogo Monnakgotla was nominated for the 2018 Nordic Council Music Prize. Her score Wooden Bodies from 2018 was commissioned by the Malva Quartet. It is a piece both elusive and tangible, presenting a theatrical interplay between the four ‘wooden bodies’ of the string quartet which appear to long for unification. My Desert, My Rose by Aleksandra Vrebalov is based on the idea of individuality in a string quartet: ‘what one brings to the group, what one gives to the others and what one gets from them.’ Lo Kristenson has focused on music in circular, twisting forms that explore the minute details of resistance, energy, pressure and slow growth. Her score vridna, vågsång explores the idea of resistance in the instruments, adding vocal sounds too.

”Makalös musik! Det finns inga stumma stunder. Man bara fylls av detta musikuniversum. Både sinnligt och intelligent. Och enormt väl inspelat.” (Musikrevyn)

During the 2010s, Sebastian Fagerlund focused on a series of orchestral compositions and concertos, making one single excursion into vocal music: the opera Höstsonaten (Autumn Sonata, 2017). One of his most important works, the opera has influenced his subsequent music, with an increase of long melodic lines alongside his signature rhythmic drive and energy. Dedicated to Nicolas Altstaedt, Fagerlund’s cello concerto Nomade consists of six movements played without a break – a journey by the cellist-wanderer through various landscapes, moods and events depicted by the orchestra. Fagerlund has enjoyed a close relationship with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Hannu Lintu, who has premiered several of his works, including Nomade. Among the fruits of this collaboration is Water Atlas, the third part of a trilogy for orchestra, also comprising Stonework and Drifts, which the same team recorded for BIS in 2017. As a whole, the trilogy deals with basic elements, albeit in an abstract manner: stone, wind (or currents) and water. In Water Atlas Fagerlund was interested in the ever-continuous water cycle: the evaporation of water into the atmosphere and its return to the earth as rain – a cycle that is currently under threat from pollution and climate change.

Image The Romantic Leygraf

“The Romantic Leygraf”- This headline might raise a few eyebrows. This is the second volume in the archive series with legendary Swedish pianist Hans Leygraf (1920-2011). Leygraf was known worldwide for his meticulous work with classics such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, and his reputation was reinforced by his dedicated work as a pedagogue, not least at the Mozarteum University Salzburg during the last decades of his life. On this album he shows a less known side in previously never released radio recordings of mazurkas by Frédéric Chopin (1969), fantasy pieces by Robert Schumann (1993), and intermezzi by Johannes Brahms (1971). A must for all Leygraf fans!

Born into a working-class family, Anders Eliasson’s earliest musical experiences originated from within himself: ‘they were my own singing, and tunes I heard on the radio’. At the age of nine he began to play the trumpet, and soon after he became the leader of a jazz band for which he wrote arrangements. Aged 14, he found a local organist to teach him harmony and counterpoint, and at 16 he left his hometown for Stockholm to study privately. In 1966 Eliasson enrolled at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, studying the various techniques and trends of modernism, from dodecaphony to musique concrete. But in the end he found it impossible to ‘break away from more than a thousand years of tradition’, as he put it: ‘Music is like H2O: melody, harmony and rhythm are a single entity. And it has to flow.’ The three works recorded here – all for the first time – are examples of the highly personal idiom he developed as a consequence.

”Parets spel är ingenting annat än offensivt förälskat.” (Martin Nyström, DN)

”Vilken underbara skiva! Vilka fantastiska verk! Vilka superba musiker! (Stig Jacobsson, Hifi & Musik)

After the award-winning album "Fanny & Felix" (dBCD191), Malin Broman and Simon Crawford-Phillips now invite you to a nostalgic journey 100 years back in time: music that was written for violin/viola and piano in 1918-1921, with one foot in late romanticism and impressionism, and the other in more modernistic forms of expression. Broman and Crawford-Phillips prove once again that they are one of the tightest chamber music constellations in Sweden. Malin Broman and Simon Crawford-Philips regularly perform as a duo. Both are extremely devoted to chamber music, and their individual musicalities blend together seamlessly, as is evidenced in this recording.

Image Sei Solo

“…The result is a beauty of sound that is as compelling as Bergström’s natural, unaffected yet deeply expressive playing. Bergström’s Chaconne is especially impressive…”

Gramophone

“…The sound is lovely: consistent tone, glossy and smooth like liquid chrome, with some discrete ambience for the performance feel, rich in colour and space. Bergström’s playing is impeccable but never pedantic, sometimes intimate, sometimes imperious, and light on ornamentation. It’s consummate playing that pays total, well-informed respect to the composer…

…Does the world need yet another batch of Bach? When the performances are this good, yes.”

BBC Music Magazine

Vardagsmusik. Eller ännu hellre: Var dags musik. Sådan som varar ända in i evigheten.”

Opus

“…First time through, I listened to each disc without interruption, and it was heavenly!...

…Highly recommended!”

Classical Guitar

Sei Solo is Italian for “Six Solos” but also for “You Are Alone”.
The dual meaning may indeed have been intentional. When
fair-copying his manuscript to the three sonatas and three
partitas for solo violin in 1720, Bach had become a widower.
The work, with a duration of well over two hours, has a total
of 32 movements. The 21st of these is the iconic Ciaccona in
D minor with its 32 variations on a chord sequence.

The Swedish guitarist Mats Bergström made his debut as a
recording artist in 1986 with the Lp “English Guitar Music”
for the Polar Music label. Three decades and numerous
albums later he felt ready to record his own guitar version
of Sei Solo.

(Lennart Bromander, Tidskriften Opera)

Sofie Asplund
Lunds Kammarsolister (LuKaS)

The coloratura soprano Sofie Asplund, has since she graduated from University College of Opera in Stockholm 2013, excelled in her major role debuts at the Gothenburg Opera, the Royal Opera in Stockholm, Finnish National Opera and The Norwegian National Opera and Malmö Opera. She has been rewarded with scholarships such as Birgit Nilsson, Anders Wall, Stena A Olsson, Royal Music Academy and Drottningholm Court Theatre grant. 2018, she became the first artist to win the newly established singing competition Shymberg Award.

Bringing together Benjamin Britten’s Les Illiuminations and Claude Debussy’s Ariettes Oubliées is like peeking behind the door to one of the most mythical bedrooms in literary history. There sit the poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, working frantically away. They write on loose sheets of paper, promissory notes and receipts. The ink drips, the papers are full of wine stains and food scraps. They are unwashedand unshaven. They drink, quarrel and sleep with each other. Verlaine writes texts that will be included in the collection of poems Romances sans paroles, taken by Debussy as a starting point for Ariettes Oubliées. The poems that Rimbaud is working on will much later be published as Les Illuminations.

Image Plaisirs illumines
Högsta betyg, 5 radioapparater (av 5) i Musikrevyn: ”Så genomarbetat. Ett ovanligt meningsfullt album. Spelet övertygar verkligen. Fem lyckliga och upplevelserika radioapparater!”

This recording presents the double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra of the Spanish composer Francisco Coll, born in 1985. Les Plaisirs Illuminés, a title inspired by Dalí’s painting of the same name, is rooted in Spanish traditions, including flamenco, yet is resolutely modern: ‘Its music is very lively rhythmically, it dances and sings- but at the same time it is very abrupt, always in search of extremes,’ says Patricia Kopatchinskaja. For this world premiere conducted by the composer, she is reunited with a longstanding partner who pursues an equally brilliant international career, the cellist Sol Gabetta. The program also features Stravinsky’s Concerto in D for string orchestra, composed in 1946 at the request of Paul Sacher for the twentieth anniversary of the Basler Kammerorchester and the Musica concertante for twelve strings by the Hungarian-born Swiss composer Sandor Veress, premiered by the Camerata Bern in 1966. A year earlier, the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera wrote his fascinating Concerto for Strings. A kaleidoscope of colors and sounds from all over the world…
