One of the most prominent bassists of his generation, Or Bareket has been in constant demand since moving to NYC nearly a decade ago. His rhythmic dexterity, fluent lyricism, propulsive beat, and compelling sound have made him a sought-after collaborator on the NY and global jazz scenes. Developing as a composer and leading his own bands was a natural evolution. Over the past few years Bareket has been carefully forging a cohesive, personal aesthetic that draws from his ancestral folklores (Bareket’s grandparents hail from Tangier, Baghdad, Buenos-Aires, and Eastern Europe) his lifelong study of Jazz and western classical music, and the influences of his peers, mentors, and collaborators. “33” is the sequel to “ob1”, Bareket’s well-received 2017 debut as a leader, and it goes farther and deeper than its predecessor in multiple directions. Nate Chinen of WBGO jazz referred to the previous album as" of rhythmic sophistication and lyrical depth...brimming with springy energies and smart details" “33” continues on the same artistic path with elaborate, detailed, and intricate compositions, but adds more layers of nuance and a wider emotional spectrum. The richness and complexity of tracks like “Still searching” or “Vienna” is contrasted by the intimacy and patience of “Zamba De Argamonte” - a duo interpretation for an Argentinian classic with Camila Meza on vocals. Various analog synthesizers like the Optigan “invade” the album at different moments, creating new soundscapes and dimensions on tracks like “Feb 1st” and the title track “Thirty Three”. “This album is a meditation on life-cycles, transformations, the death and (re)birth of ideas, relationships, and people.. These melodies and rhythms were born as chants, as medicines, a compass, an anchor during a time of dramatic shifts in my life: endings and beginnings, grief and ecstasy, communion and isolation, wanderlust and homesickness.” Bareket spent most of his 33rd year living nomadically, playing countless concerts around the world, and processing the passing of his father and the end of his first marriage. During that period in his life, music and the act of composition in particular took on a new significance. Contemplating the process of coming of age as an artist and a man , Bareket started seeing his journey as part of a longer continuum: “As months went by I contemplated the history of wanderlust and immigration in my own family. from my great-grandparents down to me, everybody was always on the move. Being nomadic is in my DNA, but so is a constant homesickness, a longing for a place that doesn’t actually exist. This imagined home lives in art - Making music is how I turn anywhere into home..” Composition became a tool of self-reflection, processing, and possibly a way to find healing and purpose: “I only took a few things on the road with me : My bass, a bag with some clothes and essentials, and a few tunes I was working on, the first of which was titled 33. Full of cyclical 3-and-6-bar phrases obscuring the starting/ending point of the song, This was the sound of my life at that moment - perpetual motion with no clear resolution. …Each one of the songs that followed served a specific purpose when it was conceived: A dance, a lullaby, a lament, a prayer, or a battle hymn” When the time came to document this music, the natural choices for the band were Bareket’s close friends and musical peers who have all been part of Bareket’s touring band at one point or another: Nitai Hershkovits played piano and keyboards, co-produced the album and co-wrote “33” and “Vienna”. Nitai and Or first met at the Tel Aviv conservatory as teenagers about 15 years ago and have played together on and off ever since. “Nitai is one of the most unique and gifted pianists and musical thinkers out there” says Bareket “he has incredible facility on the instrument, but what’s really unique about him in my opinion is his ability to always think like a producer and see the bigger picture. He had a huge role in bringing this music to life” Nitai leads his own trio has worked with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Avishai Cohen, and Ari Hoenig’s bands among many others. Shachar Elnatan on guitar is the youngest member of the band “in an age where so many young guitarists all buy the same pedals and sound like copies of each other, it’s unique to find a guitarist with such a combination of humanity, vulnerability, rhythmic sophistication, and chops (when you need them).. I love Shachar’s soulfulness and what he brings to this music” Daniel Dor on drums completes the core quartet on this album - a real scientist of rhythm and close friend of Bareket’s since they were roommates in college, this is a first documentation of a Drums and Bass “hookup “ that they both consider personally meaningful - “we used to practice rhythm together for hours and days... the concepts we developed together and this flexible yet rigorous way of approaching rhythm still inform my playing in any situation as well as my compositions on this album specifically” Two special guests on the album are guitarist/ vocalist Camila Meza and Baritone saxophone virtuoso (and Or’s brother) Eden Bareket.
