For his grand romantic opera The Fairies, Wagner reflected not only on Marschner, Weber, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Gluck - the influences of whom can be heard - but also on older predecessors than these. Contrary to the actual tradition of Romanticism, he did not search the Middle Ages for his subject, but went back to antiquity. The debutant wished to write an opera about none other than Orpheus, the most famous singer in Greek mythology and the son of Apollo, the leader of the muses. OehmsClassics now presents a live recording of the two concertante performances at the Alte Oper Frankfurt given in May 2011. The series will be continued with Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love) and Rienzi - also from Frankfurt.
