"Han är en mästare i att kombinera jazzmusik och folkmusik till en tonbild som är helt hans egen"
(Ljusnan)

"Lindberg is a true Renaissance man. From his home in Gagnef, a small village deep in the forests of the Swedish province of Dalecarlia, he emerges every now and again to dazzle us ordinary mortals with his many talents. Best known as a composer and arranger, he refuses to accept categorization and works with choirs, jazz bands, and symphony orchestras at will."
"His music is both experimental and intensely melodic, angularly lyrical-if there is such a thing. It refuses politely but very firmly to sit comfortably in the background. In this day and age we need more of that sort of thing."

(NWT)

"Margaretas insatser här är magnifika"
(Dagens Arbete)

"Vår främste kompositör/arrangör i begreppet jazz i folklore..."

"Här möts folkmusik och jazz på ett naturligt sätt"
(Dagen)

BRIEF NOTES ON THE MUSIC BY NILS LINDBERG
REMEMBER is my setting of a poem by the English writer Christina Rosetti (1830-1894). Joakim Milder is the soloist (tenor sax).

BLUES FOR BILL I wrote this piece for my first LP "Sax Appeal" (1960). It was used as the signature for the first Swedish television series devoted to jazz ("Jazz i Studio A"). Blues for Bill is dedicated to trombonist Bill Harris.

AS YOU ARE In 1964 I wrote the music for a TV series entitled "Farlig kurs" [Dangerous option]. The score contained a theme that I later developed into a ballad. In 1977 the American bass player Red Mitchell, who performed with almost all of my various ensembles at that time, provided lyrics for the piece.

SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO A SUMMER'S DAY is included in my Elizabethan suite "O Mistress Mine" based on Shakespeare's sonnet of that name. I composed it in 1986 for a US tour. I completed and recorded the entire suite on a CD in 1988.

SPRINGTIME Hans Åkesson plays the first alto-sax solo and Håkan Broström the second. Tenor-sax soloist is Joakim Milder.

DRY MARTINI Alto-sax soloist is Håkan Broström.

BB BLUES Baritone-sax soloist is Alberto Pinton.

All the soprano-saxophone solos on the disc are performed by Anders Paulsson.

When the time is ripe and the circumstances are right, things are bound to happen. Nils Lindberg and Jan Öhman met while working on the famous Swedish play "Himlaspelet" (The Road to Heaven). Nils composed the music while the part of the Angel was played by Jan. A few years later Nils created a piano arrangement for Jan's "Dry Martini". When Jan suggested that Nils might record a Jazz CD including "Dry Martini", Nils bought the idea. After all, how could he say "no" to an Angel? Nils Lindberg had long envisaged putting together a CD with singer Margareta Bengtson, with whom he had been collaborating since the original production of his "Requiem for Big Band, Chorus and Soloists" in 1993 with her as soprano soloist. "Requiem" has been performed in both the USA and Europe and Margareta sang soprano at a number of these concerts. She was also the soloist on Nils' "A Christmas Cantata" in 2002. Both "Requiem" (Phono Suecia PSCD 78) and "A Christmas Canata" (Proprius PRCD 2027) are available on CD. Nils Lindberg has gathered some of the musicians from these recordings for this new CD-project: Jan Allan on trumpet; Anders Paulsson on soprano saxophone; Jan Adefelt on double bass and Bengt Stark on drums. They are joined by Nils' group of saxophonists "Saxes Galore". The saxophone has always been one of Nils Lindberg´s favourite instruments ever since "Sax Appeal", his debut LP in 1960 that also launched the career of baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin. The saxophonists on the present recording of "Saxes Galore" are Hans Åkesson and Håkan Broström on alto sax; Anders Paulsson on soprano and tenor sax, Joakim Milder on tenor sax and Alberto Pintón on baritone sax. "Saxes Galore" have recorded several CDs, most recently "Third Saxes Galore" (Prophone PCD 052) and "Don´t be blue" (Prophone PCD 062) with Alice Babs. When listening to Nils Lindberg´s compositions and arrangements it is evident that his 5 musical roots are in his native Dalecarlia - the traditional home of Swedish folk music. It is this background that has been the major influence and inspiration for his highly personal interpretation of this great musical heritage. Yet, in spite of his strong links to this heritage his works have a distinctly international feel about them. For several years he worked together with one of Sweden's legendary vocalists Alice Babs, as composer, arranger, pianist and conductor. Nils has also written arrangements for Duke Ellington, and composed a number of works for the Hanover Symphony Orchestra. He also cooperated with internationally renowned artists like Josephine Baker, Thad Jones, Mel Tormé and Judy Garland. In 1986 Nils Lindberg performed his own music at the funeral of the former Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, and in 1989 he wrote the sacral music for the service by the Pope at Uppsala Cathedral. Several of Nils Lindberg's finest orchestral works have been released on record, among them "7 Dalecarlian Paintings", recorded on the CD "Timeless" (Prophone PCD 081). His recording "Saxes Galore" received the "Golden Record" award in 1979 from the magazine Orkesterjournalen, for the best record of the year. In 1998 "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer´s Day" from the suite "O Mistress Mine", sold more copies than any other choral piece in Sweden. In June 2006 Nils Lindberg was awarded His Majesty the King's Medal, "Litteris et Artibus", for his contributions to the arts as a composer and pianist. To try to categorise the music of Nils Lindberg is virtually impossible. A well-known Swedish music critic once described him as a kind of musical knight, riding on the frontiers of music. He sees Nils as though, on his coat-of-arms, he bears a triangle. One corner represents jazz, one symphonic works and the third folk music.
