4 AV 5 MÖJLIGA I BETYG I UPSALA NYA TIDNING

VECKANS CD I KLINGAN

(Klingan)

- First ECM leader date for widely-admired Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen.

- "Cartography" surrounds his uniquely lyrical trumpet with shifting cast of characters whose experience spans jazz, classical music, ambient music, remix culture and more.

- "Cartography": the art of drawing maps. The album can be considered a map of moods, a range of changing landscapes for Henriksen to explore.

- Changing landscapes and also changing locations - album was recorded both live and in the studio in Norway and adds material from Germany and UK.

- Very "visual" music - like soundtracks for unmade films - with emphasis on melody and atmosphere.

- Produced by Jan Bang and Erik Honoré, the album features guests including David Sylvian, Eivind Aarset and Audun Kleive.

Artist background
Arve Henriksen studied at the Trondheim Conservatory from 1987-1991, and has worked as a freelance musician since 1989.
For ECM he has recorded with Christian Wallumrød, Trygve Seim, Arild Andersen, Jon Balke, Frode Haltli and Sinikka Langeland. He has also been for ten years a member of the band Supersilent and has worked with, amongst others Anders Jormin, Edward Vesala, Jon Christensen, Marilyn Mazur, Audun Kleive, Nils Petter Molvær, Misha Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper, Arild Andersen, Stian Carstensen, the Cikada String Quartet, Motorpsycho, Iain Ballamy etc.

In all of these contexts, Henriksen has applied his uniquely lyrical/liquid trumpet tone which often sounds as much like a reed instrument or a voice as a brass instrument. "An interest in sound-making was there from the beginning of my work with the trumpet. I have spent many hours on developing a warm sound. The trumpet has vast potential for tone and sound variations that we still have not heard."

Alongside the history of the jazz trumpet, Henriksen has been influenced by the colours of Far Eastern music, especially the sound of the Japanese shakuhachi. "I let the music 'ring' and develop in my head. I was astonished by the sound of this flute..." The shakuhachi's roots in the tradition of Zen Buddhism fascinated the trumpeter, as did its "meditative and minimalistic" expressive quality: "This has made me work with tone and sound making in a new direction." Inspired by all sorts of roots music, including Norwegian folk, he is now interested in working with more contemporary and composed music. He has also spent time on electronics and different treatments of the trumpet.

"Cartography" is produced by Jan Bang and Erik Honoré, co-founders of the Punkt Festival in Kristiansand, location for several of these recordings. Bang and Honorè have collaborated for many years on many levels - they work as a duo - also called Punkt - and as travelling remix unit. As shapers of soundscapes they are in search of a relaxed yet intense openness - a description that can be applied to the music here.
Much of the music is freely created but its particular freedoms are applied to horizontal movement: Heniksen's trumpet glides over the changing terrain created by his associates.

Amongst the guests - (pop) singer/composer David Sylvian, making his ECM debut. Henriksen has played on several of Sylvian's recordings. Here Sylvian returns the favour, reading two of his poems.

The voices of Trio Mediaeval are sampled on the track "Recording Angel", and Trio singer Ana Maria Friman sings on "Famine's Ghost".
