Joachim Stutschewsky (1891–1982) is one of a group of Russian-born composers now being recognised as the ‘New Jewish School’ – the previous Toccata Classics release in this series featured the music of Leo Zeitlin (TOCC0294).
Stutchewsky confronted his identity as a Jewish musician by melding the Mediterranean sounds of his adopted Israel with the early klezmer influences of his youth in Ukraine. He gave his own instrument, the cello, rhapsodic treatment in the explicitly cantorial and folk-infused short pieces on this disc, with the piano providing enough harmonic surprises to elevate these simple melodies to sophisticated concert works. The two trios, The Klezmer’s Wedding and Hassidic Fantasy, are expertly arranged suites of nigunim – Jewish tunes.
The musicians of the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival are the highest-calibre local professionals (members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestras, and faculty members from Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne Universities). The Festival was founded in 2004 by the cellist Aron Zelkowicz. In its eleven seasons, it has programmed over 130 pieces of classical chamber and orchestral music inspired by Jewish traditions. The recordings on this CD series represent a six-year project devoted to the St Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music and its affiliated Russian composers.
