Akademia/ Françoise Lasserre
On this new CD, Françoise Lasserre, director of Akademia, wants to share with us her sense of wonder at the emotional power of Monteverdi's music. Monteverdi wrote in the preface to his eighth book of madrigals that on hearing the Combattimento, 'All the nobility were so deeply moved by compassion that they almost shed tears' - as were the audiences before whom Akadêmia performed the work in the little churches of the Champagne-Ardenne region four centuries later.
Following the trail of Monteverdi, Françoise Lasserre reads this 'combat' in the light of the ancients, the philosophers who had such influence on this key period of musical history by dictating the rules of the representation of the passions (Aristotle) and the imitation of nature (Plato).
Jan van Elsacker as Testo, a narrator who 'wants to enfold everyone within his heart', Hervé Lamy as a haughty Tancredi, and Guillemette Laurens as a warrior maiden transfigured by her final baptism.
The same interpretative approach is confirmed in the other pieces, the Nymph's lament, the 'songs of war or love' - all these compositions exude an emotional power that operates like the catharsis described by Aristotle.
