Giorgio Koukl, piano
Giorgio Koukl's survey of Alexander Tcherepnin's inventive piano music continues with two 1950s collections that reflect a synthesis of the composer's many earlier technical and expressive innovations - the virtuosic Eight Pieces, Op. 88 and the beguiling Expressions, Op. 81. These two cycles bracket a varied group of scores that ranges from the youthful Sturm und Drang of his Feuilles libres, Op. 10 through the more restrained lyricism of the Préludes, Opp. 23 and 24, and the quirky modernism of the Intermezzo, Op. 33a and Tanz, Op. 44a, to the relaxed songfulness and serene rhythmic play of the Etudes, Op. 56, written following a concert tour of the Far East.
Giorgio Koukl is a pianist/ harpsichordist and composer based in Lugano, Switzerland. Born in Prague, he studied at the State Music School and Conservatoire before moving to Switzerland and continuing his studies at the Conservatoires of Zürich and Milan. Koukl's complete recordings of Martinu's piano music for Naxos have been critically acclaimed as "a delight" (Gramophone) and "estimable and important" (MusicWeb International). Tcherepnin belonged to the same Parisian group of composers as Martinu, and Koukl's effortless technique and expertise with this fascinating repertoire make him a perfect advocate for this composer's remarkable music.
