This is the third disc dedicated to the Icelandic composer Haukur Tómasson (b. 1960) released by BIS. Previous releases include the chamber opera Guðrún's 4th Song (BIS-CD-908), which was 'very strongly recommended' by Gramophone, and described by the reviewer in Fanfare as 'an extraordinary listening experience'. The work earned Tómasson the 2004 Nordic Council Music Prize. The present disc unites three instrumental works by the composer: his two Flute Concertos, and Skíma ('a faint gleam of light'), which is something as rare as a double concerto for two double basses. The recording of Flute Concerto No. 2 has previously been released on the disc Nordic Spell (BIS-CD-1499) and was greeted with much interest by the reviewers. 'Tómasson explores special effects on the flute, creating curious combinations of timbres, in virtuosic music with mercurial changes of mood, sometimes writing in a folkloric vein, sometimes utilizing percussion in a contagiously sprightly way, and sometimes displaying an almost mesmerizing intensity' was the verdict in Fanfare upon the disc's appearance in 2005. Sharon Bezaly], the dedicatee of that work, is also the soloist in Flute Concerto No.1, in which the flute can be said to travel in a soundscape of the orchestra, the music fluctuating between East and West, between contemplative, static sonorities and a bustling metropolitan chaos. Skíma is also here performed by the artists it was conceived for, double bass players Hávarður Tryggvason and Valur Pálsson. The composer himself has said about the work: 'Two double basses performing intervals and even full chords create a special kind of sound which I find exciting. I have also known the two soloists since we were teenagers, so it seemed obvious to write the concerto for both of them. Perhaps Music for two double basses and orchestra would have been a more appropriate title, since there is not much competition between the forces involved. There is more cooperation, less individualistic virtuosic display.' On all three works the orchestral backing is provided by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, whose previous recordings on BIS, of music by Jón Leifs and of Nikos Skalkottas, have been highly praised. On the present recording the orchestra is conducted by Bernharður Wilkinson.
