In founding the Paradizo label, Skip Sempé adds the role of impresario to his growing list of distinctions as harpsichordist, musical director of Capriccio Stravagante, guest musical director, coach, teacher and lecturer. The new label will present Skip Sempé and Capriccio Stravagante in a wide variety of Renaissance and Baroque music, continuing their tradition of presenting important new instrumental and vocal soloists in programmes that expand the repertoire. The first release of the new label is, not by chance, entitled "Paradizo". Concert audiences have already shared the power and beauty of sonority unique to this programme. For the musicians of Capriccio Stravagante, this programme represents nothing short of their conception of the musical dimension of Paradise. "Prima la musica, poi le parole..." Non-verbal communication is the very craft on which much music is founded, and Skip Sempe's dedication to this music beyond words is appropriately illustrated in this CD release of instrumental music of John Dowland, Anthony Holborne, Samuel Scheidt, Henry Purcell and their contemporaries. These composers were key figures in the development of the instrumental writing for Renaissance consorts. Capriccio Stravagante performs irresistible suites of Airs, Pavans, Galliards and music from Masques, featuring Julien Martin, one of the most impressive recorder players of the new generation. From the bewitching melancholy of the recorder in Samuel Scheidt's Courant Dolorosa or Purcell's Air for the Flute to the Italianate virtuosity of the violins and viols heard in a Pavan of Dowland, the recording is exquisitely programmed, in order to ensure the perfect match of artists and repertoire for which Skip Sempé and Capriccio Stravagante has been rewarded with all the major prizes of the recording world. The sound of these instruments, played together on a communicative level of absolute perfection creates an extraordinary experience. The art of non-verbal communication in music, almost lost, but here mastered by the instrumental equipe of Capriccio Stravagante, is every bit as alive as it is sensual, to the point of breathtaking. To put it simply, the musicians are not only connected to the music: they are connected to each other, and will surely connect the listener with Paradise as well.
