Daphnis et Chloé, generally regarded as Ravel’s masterpiece, is one of the numerous important scores that owe their existence to the famous ballet impresario Sergey Dyagilev, who commissioned new works for his Paris-based troupe, Ballet Russe. Almost an hour long, Daphnis et Chloé is Ravel’s longest work, and much more commonly produced as a ballet than other Ravel dance works such as Bolero and Ma Mere L‘Oye.
The music, some of the composer’s most passionate, has extraordinarily lush harmonies typical of the musical impressionist movement. Its ethereal and intricate orchestration serves to tell the tale of the two lovers in what the composer describes as a “vast musical fresco … faithful to the Greece of my dreams”.
In this, the complete ballet, telling the ancient Greek story of the foundling shepherd and shepherdess who fall in love, the Bordeaux Opera Chorus and Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine are conducted by virtuoso conductor and composer Laurent Petitgirard.
