More Than a Pair
- do play! -
Jazz vocalist Pernilla Andersson and trumpet player Samuel Olsson met on a jam session in Gothenburg. Now, eight years later they have two kids, a townhouse and the jazz sextet More Than a Pair together. Their debut album - do play! - is best described as an entertaining hour of cozy, happy, sweet and swingin' vocal jazz.
- do play! - is an album with great variation as you will notice. The up-tempo version of Do-Re-Mi from Sound Of Music, where Pernilla like Maria, playfully takes care of the kids in the band, is followed by a slow and pleasant version of Secret Love in which Samuels arrangement somehow recalls it's first recording by Doris Day. In 1959 Siw Malmkvist had a big hit with Jazzbacillen, originally The Preacher written by Horace Silver. It's the albums only song in swedish and is here given a playful New Orleans beat. Two original compositions are also included on the album, Pernilla's Wander, co-written with Karin Rosenberg, a sensitive intimate ballad. The Too Late Bucket by Samuel is a fast blues in three keys describing the feeling of being late for work, (something that certainly never happened to him of course...) Loaded with some surprises, More Than a Pair does a version of Cole Porter's Anything Goes to round off do play!
