The Swedish summer is short. But judging from Swedish Late-Romantic choral music, there is an eternal early summer with a heavy, intoxicating fragrance of lilacs, pale June nights and, in the worst case, a mild and caressing rain. Ebullience of life and melancholy, rejoicing and gloom are combined in ardent depictions of nature. Perhaps it is true that both the poet and the composer have found in this fleeting, quickly passing time of the year the essence of everything valuable in the Swedish temperament and Swedish nature. And, as is well known, essences seldom come in large quantities.
