Beethoven's incidental music to "Egmont" formally follow the stage directions of Goethe, including how they are written by him in the dramatic texts. On 15 June 1810, the version of Beethoven's musical premiered at the Vienna Burgtheater. It is reported that Beethoven's composition in honor of the poet, "just out of love for the poet" and wrote, "to show this, no evidence taken from the theater management" has. Although Beethoven's music was regarded initially as less compulsory for performances of Egmont, but gradually disappeared from the theatre performance. In the concert hall only the Egmont Overture survived as frequently played orchestral work.

In the summer of 2007 ORF Studio, the present version was recorded, had worked for Tobias Moretti own version of the text of the play. The aim was to transfer in dramatic form-fit the piece together music from the theater to the concert stage. The host went ahead of performances at the Salzburg Festival and at the Carinthian Summer.
