The casting in this recording from 1956 of Richard Strauss' „Electra"could hardly have been more ideal. Astrid Varnay sang the leading role in what was the climax of her long career. Indeed, in the 50s and 60s Astrid Varnay came to be regarded as „the" Electra. Later she also sung the part of Clytemnestra, Electra's mother. In this recording, Clytemnestra is sung by Res Fischer. Leonie Rysanek sings Chrysothemis, Electra's sister. This Viennese singer became identified with the character in the eyes of a generation of opera lovers. Richard Kraus conducted what has become a unique document.
