Here is a project that elicits only superlatives: the first complete, uncut performance of Goethe’s life’s work, Faust I and II, in a production by Peter Stein. Narrated with affectionate and insistent precision, this is the tale of a man determined the explore the boundaries of his knowledge and of his talents – and who strives to go beyond those boundaries. It is also a feast of language. Here on DVD is a filmed version of Peter Stein’s outstanding stage production. Goethe’s Faust in the production by Peter Stein! Narrated with affectionate and insistent precision, this is the tale of a man determined to explore the boundaries of his knowledge and of his talents – and who strives to go beyond those boundaries. His repeated failures and the resultant sense of devastation, his tireless attempts to make a fresh start and, finally, his death and the way in which that death is embedded within a framework that invests it with an overarching meaning – all of this forms the play’s dramatic trajectory. This all-embracing work had never previously been performed in its entirety by a professional theatre company and presented as a single entity in terms of both time and place. As part of EXPO 2000’s cultural programme in Hanover and later in Berlin, Peter Stein was able to realize this dream of his. Beneath the astonished and at times sceptical gaze of audiences and critics alike, Stein took a risk by staging what was effectively the world premiere of Faust. With the inspired Bruno Ganz in the title role the entire ensemble played the unplayable in a truly unique stage marathon. A feast of language! Casting the character of Mephistopheles with four different performers and the constantly shifting locations around which the audience had to move during these two days of theatrical drama were additional hallmarks of this production. There were two television directors, Peter Schönhofer for Faust I and Thomas Grimm for Faust II. Together, they adapted the stage production for a television audience using a combination of documentary and cinematic film techniques and no fewer than twelve different cameras. The filming took place over a period of two and a half weeks, during which time the cast spent the day working on the production without an audience before continuing filming in the evening, when an audience was present. The editing took three months, resulting in a concentrated version for television that is now being reissued for the first time following its initial release on DVD in 2005. A ninety-minute film of the rehearsals additionally documents the evolution of this grandiose project from the first casting sessions to the first night.
