In flutist Maria Bania's own words, Johann Helmich Roman's flute sonatas are distinguished by a great wealth of ideas, exciting rhythms and a very personal expression!
Johan Helmich Roman, "the Father of our nation's music", had a great capacity to imitate different national styles. In the twelve flute sonatas we can hear influences from Handel, Lully, Telemann and folk music.
The sonatas, which in the eighteenth century could be played by different combinations of instruments, were often marketed with the violin as the solo instrument; possibly in order to increase the number of potential buyers. In this recording, however, the flute is the solo instrument throughout, but to vary the timbre and further reinforce the character of the sonatas both the cello and the bassoon are used as bass instruments.
Maria Bania holds a Ph.D. in musical performance and interpretation, a research she made at the university in Gothenburg, studying the playing techniques of the flute during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. For this double album she has written the liner notes on the works herself. Maria Bania is also active as a teacher of the transverse flute at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and since 1991 she has been a member of Concerto Copenhagen, with which group she has appeared as a soloist throughout Europe and in Japan.
Performing the sonatas, besides Maria Bania on transverse flute, is Lars Ulrik Mortensen on harpsichord, Jane Gower on bassoon and Thomas Pitt on cello.
