The latest release in the Milken Archive’s series of American Jewish Music is a disc featuring four liturgical and concert works by German-born American composer, conductor and organist Herman Berlinski, a major advocate of artistic innovation in American synagogue music.
Berlinski’s mature musical style represented on this disc highlights his fruitful synthesis of both Jewish and international elements: his Eastern European roots; the musical affinities of German Jewry; 20th-century French musical influences absorbed during studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger; the encouragement of composer Olivier Messiaen to draw upon the musical language of his own Jewish heritage, and finally, the vitality of his adopted country, the United States.
The Washington Post praised Berlinski’s earlier disc Avodat Shabbat as being “texturally luxuriant and exotic.”
